Bolingbrook Park District Uses Perry Weather Technology for Lightning Detection at Pelican Harbor
LLet’s face it, predicting the weather in the Chicagoland area can be a little tricky. Sometimes Romeoville will have a down pour, but Bolingbrook will be bright and sunny. It can be a challenge knowing how the weather is in one side of town compared to the other. It’s even more frustrating to pack up the entire family, head over to Pelican Harbor and discover that it’s raining. That’s why Bolingbrook Park District is introducing the use of Perry Weather technology.
To help patrons know what the weather is like at Pelican Harbor, the system provides visitors the opportunity to view the temperature, “feels like” reading and forecasted rain. Scan the QR code or visit bolingbrookparks.org/facilities/ pelican-harbor-weather/ to view the latest weather at Pelican Harbor.
A special added feature is the lightning closure countdown. For safety purposes, all Pelican Harbor patrons must evacuate all pools for 30 minutes when lighting is detected 10 miles from the facility. When the Perry Weather system detects lightning, a countdown will show detailing how much time is left on the “30 minutes” lightning clearing clock. This will allow patrons to see how much time is left before they can enter the pools again. With each new lightning strike, the clock will reset. Once the 30 minutes has subsided without additional lightning, all patrons are able to enter the pools again.
If you visit the Pelican Harbor weather page on the website and you see “Clear”, that means there is no lightning detected in the area.
“We are excited for this new feature,” said Mike Selep, Executive Director. “It will help our staff ensure the safety of our patrons and give patrons the ability to check the weather before they come.”

The Benefits of Natural Landscapes are Endless
NNatural landscapes, or native landscapes, are making a comeback within many communities and it is easy to see why. There are endless benefits that natural landscapes bring.
Environmental Benefits
The most commonly known benefit is native plants’ ability to hold soil and reduce erosion when appropriately used on sloped sites, stream banks, drainage ways and shorelines. Bolingbrook Park District has been strategically adding native plants throughout the community to better manage our water ways and reduce erosion.
Another key environmental benefit to native plants is their ability to store large amounts of carbon. Why is this a benefit for us? This carbon would otherwise exist in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and contribute to global warming, which has significant impacts on our climate.
If you love butterflies, natural landscapes are a perfect way to attract them to your yard. The introduction of native plants can enhance the populations of birds, insects and animals which are essential components of healthy ecosystems. Stop by one of Bolingbrook Park District’s natural landscape areas during the summer and check out all the butterflies that flourish there.
Economic Benefits
It is easy to understand the environmental benefits of natural landscapes and native plants. It is much harder to comprehend the economic benefits. One of the most significant economic benefits is the reduction of the amount storm water runoff, which does has an overall impact in the reduction of infrastructure costs. Storm water conveyance and detention facilities that replicate natural systems are less expensive to build and maintain. Also, cleaner water is always better for everyone.
For those that are looking for some economic benefits for their home, the addition of natural landscapes provides opportunities to save money and time because they do not require irrigation and they need no or infrequent mowing.
Whether you are looking to add native landscapes to your home or you are noticing Bolingbrook Park District’s natural areas on your journey through Bolingbrook, it is important to understand the many benefits that they bring. This is a very small snapshot of the impact they can have on a community. For tips on native gardening, scan the QR code below.

Summer Heat and Hydration During Pregnancy
James Kim, MD — Obstetrics & Gynecology , UChicago Medicine AdventHealth
PPregnant women are one of the vulnerable groups that need to take extra precautions on the warmer days of summer. But that doesn’t mean you need to avoid the outdoors entirely. Outdoor activities are not only healthy, but they also provide fresh air and Vitamin D.
Your Body During Pregnancy
Feeling the heat? When you’re pregnant, the amount of blood in your body increases by as much as 50%, which can make you feel warmer than usual. Particularly during your third trimester, you may notice yourself a little extra sweaty as your metabolic rate increases. Combine these changes your body is going through with the summer heat, and you’ll probably find some days to be uncomfortable.
How Hot is Too Hot?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the symptoms of overheating include warm skin, headache, dizziness, muscle cramps and nausea. Pregnant women who have a body temperature of 102.2° F for more than about 10 minutes may start to feel these symptoms, which can lead to trouble for you and your unborn baby, including cramping or contractions.
Just because you’re pregnant, it doesn’t mean you need to stay indoors all summer and miss out on fun opportunities with your family. It does mean that you should follow a few tips to better protect yourself and your baby, such as:
• Use Sunscreen – SPF 30 or higher when outdoors
• Carrying a Mister Bottle – a couple of sprays can be refreshing
• Exercising/Doing Outdoor Activities at Cooler Times of Day – try to fit in early or after the sun has gone down
• Swimming - swimming decreases pressure on your back, hips and joints and also gives your body much-needed buoyancy during those later months in pregnancy
• Wearing Breathable Fabrics, Including a Hat - breathable fabrics will help you sweat less and prevent heat rash, and of course a hat will protect your face from too much sun
Importance of Hydration
Especially during your outdoor activities this summer, aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water. For example: 150lbs = 75oz. And it’s best to drink more before, during and after exercises such as walking or swimming. You should also make it a point to choose fresh fruit and vegetables as snacks — such as watermelon, celery and pineapple — that contain lots of water.
Extra water intake helps in producing a large increase in blood volume, build new tissue, distribute nutrients, regulate your body temperature, ease constipation, decrease urinary tract infections, and flush out toxins and waste. It is also important in the formation of amniotic fluid, supporting your baby's circulatory system, and may help in decreasing preterm labor.
Recognize the Signs of Dehydration
Mild dehydration can cause irritability, headache and fatigue, all of which can cause discomfort and possibly concern for you and your baby. If you start to feel you’re overheating, move to a cooler place, drink water, and apply a cool compress to your face as quickly as possible. However, if you’re symptoms are worse, severe dehydration can be a medical emergency. Learning to recognize the signs of severe dehydration can be lifesaving. They are:
• Dark urine
• Disorientation
• Dizziness
• Dry lips and mouth
• Irritability
• Nausea
• Headache
• Slow reaction time
If you have extreme thirst, your urine is dark, you feel “overheated,” have dizziness, headache, cramping or uterine contractions, it’s recommended to visit the emergency room (less than 20 weeks gestation) or the OB triage (20 weeks gestation or more) for intravenous fluids (an IV).

Meet James J
James Rodriguez joined the Bolingbrook Park District in December, 2010 as a parttime graphic designer before moving on to a full-time position in 2011. Prior to his job in the District, he worked as a freelance graphic designer and also had a brief stint in the medical field.
In his role, James is responsible for developing and implementing effective promotion and publicity for the District. This entails the production of graphic design materials and other visual media to create a visual identity for use across various platforms such as the web, print, social, email and other signage. He also produces promotional videos, which includes directing, filming and editing. James maintains Bolingbrook Park District’s website, social media networks, e-newsletters and online videos. He is also responsible for the production of our four seasonal program guides and our six newsletters. Pretty much any digital or

print media that we have out there, James has had his hands on. You may have seen him out and about toting his trusty camera. James is also responsible for supervising the District's Graphic Designer / Marketing Assistant, Parkie the Pelican Mascot and Marketing Intern. James is a recipient of our Quality Service Award.
James says that the most rewarding aspect of his job is the variety of different duties. “I have to wear a lot of hats in this job, so each day is a little different than the previous. I get to use my creativity in many different ways,” said Rodriguez.
When James is not at work, he enjoys traveling, performing music, and learning new skills. He is also an avid golfer and is always searching for a way to drop a few strokes.
James can be reached at jrodriguez@ bolingbrookparks.org or (630) 783-6543.
