Perhaps we need to take stock of where we are now to be able to envisage where we’re going.

In the world of tech, 2023 was all about Artificial Intelligence as we debated whether the rise of AI was good (a more accurate and quicker performance from our digital cameras) or bad (the sneaky use of AI to create ‘false’ images – one of which somehow snuck to the top of the scoreboard for the Sony World Photography Awards) and eventually, what? The Terminator and the end of human civilisation as we know it?

Even those who had a hand in the development of AI were advising caution.

Elsewhere Twitter, arguably the largest platform for the sharing of thoughts and images became ‘X’ under controversial new ownership, the war in Ukraine raged on – one of BPI News’ most memorable articles this year focused on Ukrainian

On the home front the cost of living crisis, felt by us all due to rising fuel and energy prices, not to mention interest on our debts and mortgages, continued to bite and make our existence challenging. The increase in empty shop fronts on most of our high streets told this story very visibly and viscerally.

But when we’re at our most challenged we’re also at our most innovative, necessity being the mother of invention, as some old duffer once said. The primary driving force for most new inventions is a need, which brings us back around to AI again, but also to an increasing number of products that reflect the recent rise in podcasts and content creation of all sorts – namely audio and video devices, alongside purely photographic ones. If manufacturers could provide a product that was good for the delivery of all three, as well as a convenient way to share such output, they found themselves onto a winner in 2023.

Talking of winners… innovation and invention is also a cornerstone of our annual BPI News Trade Awards, for which, after several months of canvassing your votes, we reveal your garlanded winners on page 12 to 14 of this issue.

SONY’S AI EQUIPPED ALPHA ‘FASTER THAN THE HUMAN EYE’ Arriving January 2024 from the electronics leviathan is an updated pro-grade camera body in the Sony Alpha 9 III, which its maker is calling a ‘landmark’ product, plus a premium G Master telephoto lens to go with it in the FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS. Headline features of the Mark III camera, which Sony says indicates it’s listening to the wishes of professional photographers, include what’s claimed to be the world’s first global shutter full frame stacked CMOS image sensor. Try saying that with a mouth full of grapes.

The promise is that users will be able to shoot at up to 120fps without camera blackout – and so capture moments that even the naked eye can’t register. In fact, freed from the limitations of conventional mechanical shutter image sensors, this speed demon has a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 sec, or 1/16000 sec during continuous shooting.

The 24.6 effective megapixel sensor is combined with its manufacturer’s most advanced AF system so far, utilising AI to carry out 120 AF/AE focus calculations per second, as well as the ability to sync flash at all shooting speeds, when using the likes of Sony’s separately available HVL-F60RM2 or HVL-F46RM flashes.

Additionally, when capturing stills or video under LED lighting, a Hi Frequency Flicker function can significantly reduce potential problems by allowing shutter speed to be finely adjusted to match the flicker frequency while viewing the monitor.

Unsurprisingly a latest generation BIONZ XR processor is on board the Alpha 9 III, while we’re told the camera’s AI processing unit uses real-time recognition AF to register and track a wide variety of subjects with high precision, whether shooting stills or video. Support for those shooting handheld includes five-axis in-body image stabilisation, here the equivalent of 8 stops.

Pro-level feedback is also said to have influenced button layout, menu functions and the design of the grip on this model, tweaks all made with the unifying purpose of allowing photographers and videographers to capture things they’ve never been able

to capture before. When it comes to video, this is the first model in the Alpha series to be able to record 4K, 120P frame rate video without cropping, while there is also the ability to record 4K 60P videos with 6K oversampling. An S-Cinetone mode, said to help human skin and subjects stand out beautifully, also features.

When it comes to workflow, the Mark III model is said to transfer data twice as fast as the previous generation – valuable for news gatherers and sports photographers seeking to deliver material to news desks immediately via FTP. Two media slots are provided, supporting CFexpress Type A cards as well as UHS-I and UHS-II SD cards.

Very much a professional’s tool, the Sony Alpha 9 III comes with a price tag to match, at a suggested £6,100.

On top of laying claim as the world’s lightest large aperture telephoto lens at approximately 1470g, the new G Master FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens (right) is claimed to be capable of resolving a high level of detail, delivering beautiful

‘bokeh’ thanks to an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism, plus high performance auto focus. Professionals shooting with it in the field – and attached to the new Alpha 9 III – will also appreciate what’s said to be exceptional mobility and comfortable operability, its manageable weight partly down to the durable magnesium alloy used for its internal lens barrel. Lens construction comprises three Super ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element to suppress chromatic aberration and deliver high resolution and contrast across the frame. Which in turn also allows for more flexible cropping and image editing by photographers and news desks.

High speed, high precision and low vibration AF performance comes courtesy of a combination of two latest generation XD (eXtreme Dynamic) linear motors and control algorithms, especially when combined with the new camera body.

Also arriving January, the lens has a suggested ticket price of £5,800.

FUJIFILM KIOSKS INCREASE IN-STORE PRINTING BY 85% Fuji’s House of Photography retail store in Covent Garden is reporting an 85% increase in in-store printing sales since the launch of its ‘PHOTO

by Fujifilm’ kiosk, four of which are installed in its flagship location, which is approaching its fourth birthday at the time of writing. In fact the brand claims to have printed more than 35,000 photos at the London premises in the past year. It puts this down to the kiosks being repositioned to become the first point-of-contact customers experience when visiting, plus simply an increased desire, it believes, to print memories, whether for personal use or gifting.

“The latest data from our House of Photography store proves the value of printed photos and their recent renaissance as customers look to print more photos, offering significant opportunities for retailers to enhance their customer offering,” suggests Fujifilm General Manager for Imaging Solutions, Theo Georghiades.

Fuji tells BPI News that its kiosks are just the latest part of its continued investment in the UK high street. Last issue we reported on its roll out of new ‘PHOTO by Fujifilm’ branding for its independent retail partner stores, and, previously, we told you about the availability of Scribbler Lite kiosks,

enabling those who wish to participate to have, in effect, a mini Scribbler greetings card outlet within their own shop.

Theo continues: “We are proud of our history on the UK’s high streets and are committed to ensuring customers have the best possible experiences using our products and visiting Fujifilm retailers. It is clear more people are looking to print photos, so it’s vital that we ensure these services are accessible on the high streets.

As we move into 2024, we will continue to invest in the consumer’s experience by encouraging other retailers to consider offering photo services in-store.”

Nothing stays the same for long in the photography industry, especially not in recent years. The spate of acquisitions, mergers and consolidations continues with Helen Atkinson, Director of Snapperstuff Ltd, getting in touch to inform us that the UK and Ireland distribution of her former brands Think Tank Photo and MindShift Gear has transferred to Transcontinenta UK. The change of distributor became effective as of November 1st.

Last month official reseller the DPS Group gave the trade the opportunity to do just that when it staged a takeover of Epson UK’s well-equipped Hemel Hempstead HQ. It brought with it a host of complementary products and brands to make the day even more essential and valuable. BPI News was one of the attendees, enabling us to enjoy first-hand demos of the wide format paper and garment printers we’ve been discussing for months, as well as third party media and complementary devices for those involved in professional printing.

In fact, attendees were promised the largest selection of Epson’s award-winning photo and graphics inkjet printers on display, from A3+ to 64-inches wide, as well as the latest T-shirt and dye sub personalisation printers in Epson’s Textile Solutions Suite.

Having sung their praises in previous editions of BPI News, we were able to take a look at Epson’s latest large format ‘P’ and ‘T’ series printers, pitched as being capable of delivering big profits for your business – and witness how, despite their chunky dimensions, the printers’ flat sided design means they can be installed against walls, cabinets or in spaces with a shallow depth.

upgrade or who were just about to explore large format scanning,” he enthuses. “They really appreciated seeing the range in person and being able to talk about their requirements with experts.

We also had a chat with Fiery Software Products and a demo of its application specific products including Digital Factory and FilmMaker, designed to help both workflow and the effectiveness of your printers.

Epson UK’s Gary Kingsley, Business Development Manager for Commercial & Industrial Large Format Print, concludes: “The tradeshow’s collaboration between Epson and DPSB was a tremendous success, demonstrating the commitment of both companies to provide an informative and engaging event. Our Epson pre-sales technical specialist was on-hand to demonstrate the full range of Epson photo, proofing, technical, dyesublimation and DTG printers, offering advice and answering questions. Visitors also had the opportunity to speak with other third-party vendors within the printing industry, and network with like-minded companies, so it proved a good use of their time to attend.”

In conclusion, this was an enjoyable day that allowed the photo trade to chat informally with the experts at the DPS Group and Epson along with invited third party vendors and get all of our questions answered at once.

Two experts in print combine their sizeable knowledge to offer innovative lay flat photobooks to new and existing customers, with Digitalab in North Shields welcoming one of the first machines

It’s an afiliated business of Imaging Solutions, the originator of the lay flat machine market, whose products can be found in all the major labs and commercial printers, setting the benchmark in industrial automated standards.

LayFlat products have been developed to fulfil shorter print runs while offering the same high quality technology to the print market. Choices include traditional single sided print solutions usually found in the wedding

SIGMA ZOOMS AHEAD IN 2024 The optical specialist eyes L-Mount and Sony E-mount owning enthusiasts and professionals for its thrilling new full frame telephoto zoom

ast, accurate and near silent AF, a compact weather resistant body plus a professional feature set – what more could anyone want from the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS lens. Designed exclusively for full frame mirrorless cameras and billed as the definitive fast aperture zoom for enthusiasts and professionals like, the latest addition to Sigma’s ‘Sports’ category is ideal for a wide range of subjects including portraits, wildlife, weddings and live events.

THIS ONE WILL FLOAT YOUR BOAT As well as being razor sharp, this lens can very much keep up with the action, thanks in part to its unique floating focus system. We’re told two focusing groups, each using an HLA (Highresponse Linear Actuator) motor, move in opposite directions when focusing.

Sigma suggests this reduces internal movements by half, thus providing fast AF for shooting fast moving subjects. Sticking

with the dual theme, this lens also features two optical stabilisation modes. Mode 1 can be used for all types of photography, while Mode 2 employs Sigma’s Intelligent OS2 algorithm to enable smoother panning shots. Regardless of the lens’ orientation, stabilisation is effective for both vertical and diagonal movement.

Overall dimensions are 90.6mm x 205mm, with a weight of 1345g. The lens and hood are constructed using a multi material structure, comprising carbon fibre reinforced plastic and Thermally Stable Composite materials. The former provides a strong yet lightweight construction suited to withstanding the possible rigours of professional usage, while the latter enables a consistent lens performance whether operating in very hot or very cold temperatures.

Optional accessories to bundle with a sale of the new lens include the Sigma USB Dock UD-11 for L-Mount, various protective and creative filters, plus Sigma TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2.0x) tele converters to extend the reach still further; up to 400mm equivalent in terms of the latter. ith stock shortages and stretched supply lines largely alleviated in 2023, it would perhaps have been business as usual this year without the cost of living crisis, high inflation and falling living standards continuing to challenge all of us. That said, there continued to be great and ambitious products announced that reflected the shifting landscape and evolving consumer and professional

demands. At the same time retailers, distributors, suppliers and manufacturers alike did their utmost to maintain excellent levels of service and support.

So for our annual BPI News Trade Awards we asked you to nominate and vote for those that stood out, proffering some suggestions of our own to provide ideas and steer if needed. As the photo industry’s journal of record, it’s important we

reflect the real feeling in the trade.

TIPA EXTENDS COMPETITION ENTRY TO JANUARY 15TH The BPI News affiliated Technical Image Press Association (www.tipa.com) has extended the cut off date for photographers of all skillsets to submit images for its inaugural ‘Picture This’ competition. As we mentioned back in October, the photo competition is a little different in that it’s looking for submitted images that best show an engagement with photography and photo gear. This fresh angle is highlighted by categories including ‘My Camera and I’, ‘My Camera in Action’ and ‘What’s in My Camera Bag’.

So for ‘My Camera and I’, consider a selfie with camera in hand. Use reflective surfaces, or set another camera on a tripod and use a self-timer with just you and your camera as the subjects.

The ‘My Camera in Action’ category is looking for photos showing photographers and their camera at work. Consider a context such as a sports event, nature walk or studio set up with accessories like a tripod and flash, and what interesting positioning

might create a great angle of view.

Finally, for ‘What’s in My Camera Bag’ the judges are looking for clever and artistic arrangements of cameras, lenses, accessories, filters and even film. Think about what you might carry into the field for nature, sports or even astrophotography. Kit can be shown inside the bag or even

TRANSCONTINENTA UK ACQUIRES THINK TANK DISTRO Nothing stays the same forever in the photo trade and distribution of Think Tank and MindShift Gear has transferred over from Snapperstuff. So, which key new products should retailers be stocking?

ranscontinenta UK has snapped up responsibility for the Think Tank and MindShift Gear brands for the UK and Ireland from former distributor Snapperstuff. The change of distribution came into effect at the start of last month.

As well as key existing Think Tank products including Airport International v3.0, Mirrorless Mover, SpeedTop and Digital Holster, Transcontinenta UK will be handling its most recent Q4 releases in the PressPass and BackLight Sprint ranges. The former comprises the PressPass 10, PressPass 20 and PressPass Sling, while the latter involves the BackLight Sprint Green and BackLight Sprint Grey.

EASY ACCESS WITH A PRESSPASS As its name suggests, the Think Tank PressPass range (above) has been devised with input from professional photojournalists. Available bag options include a crossbody bag, a shoulder bag, a waist bag and a sling bag. A key feature common to all is a wide aperture opening for quick and easy access to photo kit, whether using it for carrying a camera, lenses, or both. A padded insert is removable to increase interior space and create a softer, more pliable bag.

The crossbody/sling style PressPass 10 (left) is primarily designed for changing lenses, with room for between three and six optics, but smaller style cameras with a 24-70mm f/2.8 or f/4 lens attached will also fit. As well as the padded insert, the bottom of the bag is foam lined, while we also get an extra-long padded nonslip shoulder strap, a tuck away waist belt, a rear zippered pocket and inside pocket, a rear top grab handle and a removable rain cover. With external dimensions of 30.5x10.5x16.5cm and internal dimensions of 29.25x9.75x15.5cm, weight is 1lb, 8 oz.

The step-up option in the PressPass 20 can be worn cross body or used as a shoulder bag. It’s primarily designed for lenses but again can fit a smaller camera body with a lens attached, here a 70-200mm f/2.8. We get all the features mentioned above but slightly larger external dimensions of 32.75x11.75x21.5cm, internal dimensions of 31.5x11x20.5cm, and a weight of 1lb, 11 oz.

Alternatively there’s the PressPass Sling (below), which, when slung to the front, provides easy access to all stored gear.

As well as various dividers and pockets common to each bag in the range, we also get an optional tuck away stabiliser belt and the bag can be stood upright on a table for free access to gear. Again it will accommodate a camera

with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens attached, or four to six lenses, up to a 150-600mm f/5.6-6.3 unattached. External dimensions are 38.75x18.75x11.5cm, internal dimensions are 36.5x18.5x10.75cm, while it weighs 1lb, 7 oz.

MAKE LIGHT OF IT WITH BACKLIGHT Again, Think Tank has aptly named this option, as it’s designed for photographers who have lighter kit and want a less bulky bag. In fact the BackLight Sprint (above) is a slim and lightweight backpack ideal for both hiking and getting about town, that can hold a standard sized camera body and a trifecta of zoom lenses, while of a size that means it will meet most airline carry-on requirements. It also features the popular rear opening access, combined with a front pocket for personal items.

A harness system provides comfortable all-day carrying while there are two side pockets that can fit a water bottle or tripod. Padded belts, adjustable dividers and a seam sealed rain cover are included.

Maximum transportable lens size when attached to a body is 300mm f/2.8 or 150600mm f/5-6.3. With a 15 litre bag volume and choice of grey or green colours, external dimensions are 44.5x23x17cm, internal dimensions are 42x21x14cm, and the backpack weighs 2lbs, 5 oz.

It’s been a year in which Tetenal UK changed name to Dupli to reflect independence from its former parent company, and made significant investment into digital transformation. Chief Marketing Officer Louise Wilce recaps on a busy 2023

s well as building an identity distinct from the branding of old, while maintaining existing clients, the first year of Dupli Ltd has seen lots of updates to the product portfolio, working with prestige brands and creating the foundations for growth, with a view to new partnerships in early 2024.

Q: How has 2023 been for Dupli, following many years trading as Tetenal UK? A: This has obviously been a pivotal year for us. We started it as Tetenal, we’re now Dupli and are keen to talk publicly about all the investment we’ve made and what that means for our customers. The initial trigger for our rebrand was that pre Covid we’d completed a management buyout of the UK subsidiary of Tetenal and wanted a new identity. 2023 also saw growth of our leadership team, with new hires at a senior level including myself, a Digital Marketing Manager, a HR and People Manager to help us grow our head count and bring in the skills we need, and two new sales team members. It’s been about creating the foundations for growth. We also landed exclusive distribution of Noritsu for the UK and Iceland, plus new products from Epson and DNP, whilst working with Hahnemühle as a Prestige Partner.

Was there any trepidation around the new brand and name, moving from one so well established?

It was tricky, taking the best of our heritage and experience and pairing

work with them to help their budget go further and find cost effective solutions. For example, telling them that if they upgrade or tweak their kit slightly, they could save money on cost per print and make energy savings too.

Our marketing team can also create digital assets for our retailers. That’s a big part of what we mean by ‘Partners in Print.’ We have a good dialogue with them, and we’ve had several open days where they can experiment with the kit and find out more.

it with ambitious plans for the future, but I think we nailed it. It almost doesn’t matter what you call yourself, it’s about the service you give and the experience our customers have.

What’s been the reaction?

We wanted to create something that makes it easier for our customers to find and purchase products from us and is a useful resource for the industry. We’re building on it with a knowledge hub, videos about the products we sell – including turning our sales guys into budding YouTube stars – and there’s a library of thought leadership pieces planned. Feedback’s been positive. In fact, from our time trials and testing we know it takes customers 75% less time to find what they’re looking for on the new site.

Tell us about Dupli’s investment in new systems.

Digital transformation will be a key driver for our growth. We’ve put in a new ERP system to create operational efficiencies, plus a new CRM and marketing system – digital tools that allow us to create a seamless experience for our customers and communicate with them about the right things at the right time. We look at the challenges that our customers are having and

Personalisation, wall art and photo gifts continue to grow, so we are tailoring our equipment and software towards these growing markets. Has the rebrand ultimately brought in new clients?

The photographic print industry can sometimes ‘play it safe’ and do the same things because that’s what everyone does. Our rebrand and investments we’ve made in 2023 offer the opportunity to shake things up and do things differently, with the understanding that the next generation of the creative industry expects to be communicated with differently, without compromising customer experience. We like to think we’re different from the ‘old school.’

GETTING THE BEST OUT OF TAXING TIMES

With the Chancellor’s recent Autumn Statement having been trumpeted as the biggest business tax cut in history, we drill into the detail behind the hype to see if it’s all it’s cracked up to be – and, if so, how photo trade businesses could actually benefit as we head into 2024…

T

he Chancellor’s autumn statement at the end of last month promised various measures to help business, although, as ever, reactions were mixed, with small and medium sized businesses suggesting more could be done still.

Most notable was what the Chancellor claimed as the biggest tax cut for business

in modern history – making permanent the move that allows businesses to offset expenditure on business equipment and machinery incurred between April of this year and April 2026 against tax at a higher than usual rate. In fact companies can claim a 100% first year allowance for main rate expenditure, known as

full expensing, and 50% for special rate expenditure. Worth over £10 billion per year, full expensing is claimed to make the UK’s capital allowances regime one of the most generous in the world, with the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasting this will unlock an additional £14 billion of investment over the period.

MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS BACK FOR SECOND YEAR Love of music and visuals often goes hand in hand, at least at BPI News Towers, so we’re pleased to see the return of the So.Co Music Photographer of the Year Awards, although for the second year of the competition it is going by a new name: the So.co Image of Music Awards.

New Kenro partnership seeks to become illuminating

NIKON Z 8 PROVES BEAR NECESSITY No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you; that really is a giant teddy bear riding a horse disguised as a unicorn, in new PR for Nikon’s Z 8, coincidentally winner of the photo trade’s BPI News Product of the Year in this very issue. The imagery is the work of multidisciplinary artist Paul Robinson, aka ‘LUAP’, who recently put the camera to the test during a trip to Mongolia for his latest creation ‘Taming the Unicorn’. We believe the horse/unicorn represents bravery and the conquest of fear, evoking the mystical allure of unicorns found in fables and legends, while the pink bear, we’re told, is a metaphor for Paul’s distant childhood. More widely, the photographer’s work touches on the themes of mental health, the climate crisis and isolation, with the Nikon Z 8 used to enable him to effortlessly shoot on the move, using razor sharp tracking to focus on his subject.
