uly’s record-breaking heatwave has further highlighted climate change and the need for sustainability. Fast fashion’s environmental impact is well documented and there’s been a real sea change in opinion among shoppers about its real cost to the planet. Many indies and brands are now making extra efforts to offer their customers a greener alternative, promoting made-to-last products produced ethically using eco-friendly fabrics. If you’re hoping to increase your offer of conscious products and brands for AW22, we pick out some stylish options in this issue on page 64. Buying season is back in full swing with numerous trade shows taking place across the country. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing – despite the absence of covid restrictions. With Pure London (and Scoop) taking place during the hottest day on record, the blistering heat and advice against travel threatened to derail the show’s return to Olympia. However, according to organisers and many exhibitors, orders were strong. INDX Womenswear and Harrogate Fashion Week, meanwhile, took place amid the latest train strike. But attendees were undeterred by any changes to travel plans and both events saw a strong turnout. Turn to our news pages on page 15 to read more. If you haven’t managed to source all the products and new brands you were hoping for, next month’s Moda at Autumn Fair looks to be well worth

a visit. Turn to page 29 for our pick of must-see exhibitors. Elsewhere in this issue we speak to Sassy and Boo founder Alison Townshend about her inspiring 17year journey from property developer to international brand and indie retail group owner. Read our exclusive interview with the savvy business owner on page 81. Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who has submitted a Boutique Star Awards entry. We’ve been blown away by the standard of entries for this year’s competition and we’ll be announcing the shortlist on our website and social channels soon. ESSENTIAL NEWS FOR FASHION INDIES

LYNSEY MCGARRIGLE, SARAH SCOTT AND RICHIE CRAWFORD FROM MCELHINNEYS IN IRELAND

Attendee numbers surge by 75 per cent at “record-breaking” Harrogate Fashion Week

his month’s Harrogate Fashion Week attracted a significantly higher number of attendees than its previous editions, with 50 per cent more visitors on Sunday and 75 per cent more on Monday compared to the same days in July 2021. Now in its seventh season, the two-day event increased its floor space for SS23, showcasing the latest womenswear, footwear and accessories across three halls inside Harrogate Convention Centre. Retailers reportedly travelled from across the country this season, with buyers arriving from as far afield as Ireland, Inverness and Bournemouth. According to organisers, Harrogate Fashion Week is “no longer a regional event” and has earned a place on the fashion trade calendar as one of the UK’s largest womenswear exhibitions. Co-founders Wendy Adams and

Sarah Moody say they are thrilled with the response to the show’s latest instalment and are currently forging plans to increase its duration from two to three days for the spring/ summer seasons: “Buyers can do a complete buy at Harrogate Fashion Week as it offers great daywear, eveningwear, shoes and accessories all in an easy-to-navigate layout,” says Sarah. “There’s really no need to go anywhere else.” She adds that its spa town location is also appealing among attendees: “Many have commented that the show was like the ‘good old days’ when fashion took over Harrogate,” she says. “They love its great mix of business and pleasure.” Buyers visiting this season’s show were able to peruse the latest collections from regular exhibitors Isabella, Orientique, Marble, Pomodoro, Veromia, Rino

and Pelle, Dolcezza, Lily and Me, John Charles, Bariloche, Tilley and Grace, NYDJ and Kevan Jon. Meanwhile, various newcomers were also present including Taifun, 5 Hearts from Eugen Klein, Bianca, Troy London, Paramour, Henrietta Steffenson and Luella. Many exhibitors reported a positive experience following the show. “We opened lots of new accounts and had a great reaction to our range,” says Louise Collins from British womenswear brand Alice Collins, which returned this season. Meanwhile, Ian Campbell Smith from Rino and Pelle adds: “We’re really happy with the growth of the show, our location in the new hall is great. Fantastic lunch, too.” The eighth edition of Harrogate Fashion Week will take place on 5-6 February 2023; visit harrogatefashionweek.com for updates. AUGUST 2022 | boutique. | 15

Help to Grow: Digital now open to smaller businesses The government’s Help to Grow: Digital scheme is now available to businesses with fewer than five employees. The incentive cuts the price of 30 approved digital business solutions, with discounts on e-commerce, accounting and CRM software worth up to £5,000. It is also introducing support and advice for SMEs on adopting digital technology. Applications for advice platforms to partner with the scheme are now open, with the service expected to go live later this year. Martin McTaguesaid, chair at the Federation of Small

Businesses (FSB), comments: “The government has rightly listened to our call to expand digital support to all small employers. Reducing the threshold to one employee really makes a difference in this space. Together with the addition of e-commerce software and one-to-one advice for SMEs on technology adoption, this will enable more small businesses to fulfil their growth ambitions.”

Small business owners plan to increase prices to offset rising costs Almost half of all small business owners in the UK (49 per cent) are set to increase their prices this year as they battle rising costs. One in five SMEs intend to raise prices by 6-10 per cent while 7 per cent are considering an increase of as much as 20 per cent. The findings are from The SME Insights Report, released by insurance provider Simply Business, which polled 1,000 small business owners around the UK on their response to the current economic crisis. Elsewhere, it finds that expansion plans are also on hold for many 16 | boutique. | AUGUST 2022

SMEs. Almost half (48 per cent) say they’re unlikely to hire any additional employees while two in five (40 per cent) are delaying opening new or additional premises. Three in five (62 per cent) believe that the economy is set to worsen over the next six months but remain confident in their business’ ability to weather the storm. The majority of those polled (71 per cent) say they feel optimistic about their prospects over the next six months. Commenting on the new research, Jonathan Portes, professor of economics

Indie group Sassy and Boo opens eighth boutique

Sassy and Boo is set to open its eighth bricks-and-mortar store in the picturesque town of Marlborough this month. The new boutique, which joins the indie group’s other stores located around the Cotswolds, will stock its own Luella label alongside a curated line-up of brands from the UK and Europe. Founder Alison Townshend says she chose the location because of its well-heeled visitors and inspiring line-up of independents: “We’re so excited to bring Sassy and Boo to Marlborough. It really feels like a successful town story among the current doom and gloom and we’re delighted to be part of it. We believe we’ll compliment the other shops there to offer a truly great shopping and leisure experience.” Turn to page 81 to read our exclusive interview with Alison Townshend. and public policy at King's College London, says: “Small businesses in the UK have had to cope with overlapping economic shocks over the past three years – the pandemic, Brexit and now the cost-of-living crisis. “What this study shows is that despite the general economic pessimism, most businesses remain resilient. Like consumers, they expect the UK economy to worsen significantly over the next year, but they remain reasonably confident about their own prospects in the face of rising cost pressures.”

-19.72% Pure London returns to Olympia amid unprecedented UK heatwave Buyers battled soaring temperatures in the capital last month to attend the latest edition of Pure London. Returning to Olympia for the first time in over two years, the three-day event offered a unique mix of new and established global brands, inspirational educational content, catwalk shows and trend presentations. Visitors were also able to attend Scoop, which took place for the first time in the newly refurbished Olympia West. Following the success of its new section Pure Jewel, event director Gloria Sandrucci says there are many new developments in the pipeline for Pure London: “We offer the most comprehensive

global fashion offering for retailers – the show’s future is global, educative and inspiring. This is just the beginning.” Pure London will increase in size for its February 2023 edition, introducing eco-led fashion section Purely Sustainable. Meanwhile, it will also work with London Edge founder Carole Hunter to develop new alternative brands area, Pure Edge. Organisers say there are further developments planned within the subsectors of its Womenswear destination to include Premium, Gen Z and Pure Body. The next edition of Pure London will take place at Olympia on 12 -14 February 2023.

Demand for loungewear remains high as shoppers prioritise comfort If you thought the appetite for stretchy waistbands disappeared with covid restrictions, you are very much mistaken. According to research by Parisian trend forecaster Promostyl, loungewear is still very much in demand. Its data shows loungewearinspired pieces were up by 12 per cent in fashion collections for AW22 while 61 per cent of female shoppers are allocating more budget to such garments. However, there is a move away from the type of loungewear consumers were wearing in 18 | boutique. | AUGUST 2022

Help to grow

A

s inflation rises and consumer confidence dips, indies will need to work hard to win over shoppers in the coming months. Here Jamie Saucedo at e-commerce fulfilment provider PFS reveals how retailers can retain loyalty while times are tough and reap the rewards later… AUGUST 2022 | boutique. | 73

DOWN TO BUSINESS

Feeling the squeeze?

INDIES MUST BALANCE COST PRESSURES WITH CUSTOMER SATISFACTION TO SURVIVE THE COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS, SAYS PFS’S JAMIE SAUCEDO

P

rices have risen at their fastest rate for 40 years, with UK inflation hitting 9 per cent in May. As the cost of living continues to skyrocket, consumers are starting to cut back on their spending - and it is predicted that hospitality and retail will feel the brunt. According to recent reports, consumers are most likely to cut back on eating out and fashion as they adjust their spending to cope with rising costs. With price hikes showing no sign of slowing down, consumer confidence in the UK has fallen to its lowest level since 1974. Despite a slight rise in overall retail sales in April (1.4 per cent) as the UK continues to bounce back from Covid, this could be short-lived amid further economic uncertainty. The competition between retailers is now tougher than ever before as consumers have less in the way of disposable income to spend on items deemed non-essential. Now, more than ever, indies must work hard to maintain customer loyalty in order to secure their hard-earned cash, while also being cost-conscious when it comes to their own operations.

The other side of the coin

Of course, consumers are not the only ones feeling the squeeze right now. Retailers are also facing spiralling costs on everything from energy and transport to staff and products. According to a survey by Logistics UK, almost three-quarters (71 per 74 | boutique. | AUGUST 2022

cent) of logistics firms are reporting an increase in shipping costs that “many businesses will not be able to absorb.” With no option but to pass these costs onto consumers, retailers and brands are expected to enter a vicious cycle that could see sales and profits continue to drop. For many retailers, this comes at a time where finances are already strained as a result of the lingering impacts of post-pandemic recovery. In fact, earlier this year, while vowing to keep prices static for at least a year on its own-brand essential items, health and beauty giant Superdrug admitted it was facing increased pressure to raise prices. However, with the cost-of-living crisis adding strain to consumer spending, this doesn’t come without substantial risk.

Striking a balance

As online marketplaces become increasingly saturated, the face of brand loyalty has altered significantly and consumers are considering cost as a key factor to the optimal shopping experience. In fact, our own research found that when asked about the most important factors influencing their decision to make multiple purchases from the same retailer, consumers were mostly driven by free delivery (37 per cent) and competitive/attractive prices (33 per cent). In the UK especially, shoppers are more driven by cost than brand loyalty, with 31 per cent of respondents agreeing to this statement.

Retailers therefore must balance their own cost pressures with the satisfaction of their customers to retain their custom and avoid them turning elsewhere to find a better deal. That said, this doesn’t mean automatically cutting prices or devaluing products. Balance means finding ways to boost efficiency where possible – and in doing so minimising the impact of inflation on customers.

Optimising resources

The first option when faced with rising costs is to look for alternative fulfilment solutions. Existing infrastructures that require significant investment, for example, can be repurposed, ensuring space is being fully maximised. Retailers can look to a BPO to help offset inflation and could look beyond a centralised warehouse model and consider optimising existing physical store space to work harder and smarter. With the right order management system and picking technology, brands can transform their brickand-mortar sites into multi-node distribution facilities – making the space work twice as hard by fulfilling the needs of both in-store shoppers, while also being able to support online demand. This can also be effective in reducing the distance between product and customer, therefore cutting back on the mileage and costs associated with delivery.

Cloud-based order fulfilment picking solutions will also prove valuable here. These flexible order picking solutions can be easily integrated within existing systems and can help increase distribution efficiency, by not only speeding up the picking process but increasing picking accuracy. Improved accuracy in these areas can ensure money isn’t wasted from returning incorrect products, while also ensuring greater productivity per man-hour.

Renewing confidence

While there are steps retailers can take to optimise resources, cost rises are inevitable and businesses will need to consider other methods for retaining customer loyalty during this period of flux. To do so, indies must become more strategic, leveraging other elements high up on the priority list for consumers – including convenience and consciousness. According to our research, over half (54 per 76 | boutique. | AUGUST 2022

cent) of consumers prefer to have the convenience of multiple return options to keep up with their busy lifestyles. Meanwhile, 35 per cent named sustainable packaging, delivery and returns options at the checkout as key parts of the ideal shopping experience. Retailers may not be able to gain complete control over costs in the current climate, but they can ensure they keep up with these other expectations to maintain loyalty and trust. Leveraging the start-up mentality around personalisation and value-added services can also be a great way of standing out from the crowd and remaining competitive during this time. From engraving to embroidery, even adding a personalised label to packaging, which doesn’t come at a huge expense for the business, can go a long way in providing value to the customer. Customer experience should also be a key consideration. When cost

pressure rises and consumers are shopping with an every-pennycounts mentality, tolerance around the service they receive will be at an all-time low. Higher levels of frustration may be felt if an order is running late, for example, or a mistake is made and the wrong product arrives. Customer service teams must therefore be equipped to deal with enquiries quickly and seamlessly – and from a range of channels. While there may not be internal resources available to do so, outsourcing customer care teams can be a cost-effective solution to this problem. Consumer confidence may be low currently, but this will not always be the case. Retailers that can appeal to and retain loyalty while times are tough will continue to reap rewards in the future. SHOP TALK ALISON TOWNSHEND

Colourful Living SASSY AND BOO HAS GROWN FROM ONE SINGLE STORE TO A GROUP OF EIGHT BOUTIQUES – WITH ITS OWN WHOLESALE LABEL TO BOOT

W

ith a penchant for colour and passion for customer service, Alison Townshend has spent the last 17 years building an indie retail group and womenswear brand. Her mini chain Sassy and Boo has grown from one single store in Bath into a cluster of shops dotted around the Cotswolds. Meanwhile, since launching in 2013, her brand Luella now boasts over 400 stockists across the UK and overseas.

But despite its impressive growth, a large business wasn’t always part of the plan for its owner.

Worthy investment

A former property developer with an eye for fashion, Alison opened the first Sassy and Boo boutique in 2005. “I suppose it all started by chance,” she says. “A boutique I used to like shopping in went up for sale near Bath’s Royal Crescent and my husband offered to help me invest. I loved the idea but I was quite nervous

– while I’m a natural sales person and was used to selling properties, I had no experience in retail.” As it turned out, there was no cause for concern. With the aid of a mentor who was experienced in working for high street retailers and indies, the concept for the first Sassy and Boo store began to take shape. Alison was set on creating a boutique that offered a completely different experience from high street multiples. From products to service, she wanted to provide a unique way for Bath’s well-heeled shoppers to browse and buy fashion. “The idea was to offer an outstanding service encompassing help with styling, colour coordination and creating a functional wardrobe,” she says. “Colour is our ‘thing’ and it plays a huge part in all our collections across the shops and brand.” Sassy and Boo’s location was also vital for its success. Bath is a tourist hotspot for affluent shoppers visiting for day trips and weekends away. And as more stores followed over the years as it expanded into towns including Tetbury, Cirencester and Woodstock, destination is now an integral part of the Sassy and Boo formula: “We do spend a lot of time on choosing the ideal locations for our stores,” says Alison. “We usually go for small market towns that get lots of visitors; shoppers who are often on a pilgrimage from London for the weekend. Our offer appeals to that type of customer.” AUGUST 2022 | boutique. | 83

Label launch

Armed with seven years’ experience as an independent retailer, Alison began contemplating the idea of launching her own label. And using all the knowledge she’d gained as a buyer, Luella was born. The collection offers high quality knitwear and womenswear in vibrant colourways – crucially, with short lead times. “I was getting a little bit fed up with placing large minimum orders six to eight months in advance,” she says. “It was particularly problematic for the spring/summer seasons, as drops would start arriving in January when there was little chance of selling warm weather clothes until March. I felt there was a real need for quality pieces boutiques could buy as and when they needed to.” With a vision to break into the wholesale market from the get-go, Alison began producing knitwear in small quantities with a clothing manufacturer. The pieces were then shipped to warehouse to hold until buyers wanted new stock. To launch the range, she ran an advertising 84 | boutique. | AUGUST 2022

campaign with Boutique magazine and won some initial stockists. “I encouraged boutiques to order little and often and everyone was thrilled – it worked very well and growth from there was pretty much organic,” she says. But it wasn’t until Alison took Luella’s now-signature star jumper to Pure London that the brand really took off. “It was just my husband and I on the stand that season and we had a 30ft-long queue,” she says. “We were inundated with orders for the entire three days; it was incredible and to this day I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

Rapid growth

The rising success of Luella provided a catalyst for the growth of Sassy and Boo’s bricks-and-mortar stores. Since the label’s introduction nine years ago, Alison has opened five more boutiques, with another set to open in Marlborough later this month. Today the Luella range makes up around 70 per cent of Sassy and Boo’s edit and includes bright cashmere blend knitwear, dresses,

shirts and resortwear. Its most current AW22 collection is based on four colour stories to make merchandising easy for retailers. “The idea is to help buyers make a lovely edit for their individual store,” she explains. “So if they’re keen on the berry and teal story, for example, we can pull out various pieces that work very well aesthetically alongside each other. A buyer might not have bought into our shirts, but when they see everything together, they can visualise how well it works.” To complement Luella, Sassy and Boo also stocks a range of mid-price womenswear from brands including YAS, Part Two and Anna Montana. Alison chooses labels that sit well within the stores – both visually and when it comes to the price. “It’s really important that we don’t go too high with our price points and also offer value for money,” says Alison. “Our dresses and cashmere blend knitwear remain at the RRP £72 - £85 mark, which is fantastic for the quality. I want to make buying from us an easy decision for our customers.”

SHOP TALK Cost of living

Value for money is something the indie owner plans to focus on as she steers the business through the cost-of-living crisis. However, due to increasing wholesale and retail costs, she fears raising prices in the future could be unavoidable: “It’s unfortunately something we will be playing by ear and may have to consider,” she says. “I am slightly concerned about how much extra it’s going to cost to heat the shops this winter as energy prices continue to rise.” Perhaps inevitably, Alison is starting to shift her focus increasingly towards e-commerce. Like many indies, Sassy and Boo wasn’t selling online prior to the first lockdown and had to pivot quickly to generate income. However, despite normality resuming in retail, e-commerce has continued to command strong sales. “I never wanted to sell online because we want to offer a personal in-store service,” she says. “It’s been difficult to change that thought process, but now I can see that online provides an efficient way for customers to buy from us. In the end we sold quite a lot during the pandemic and it really helped us through that time.” For the coming months Alison’s strategy will be to invest in social media and online marketing to increase e-commerce sales. Luella is also poised for growth as the team sets its sights on further international export in USA territories, Canada and the Southern Hemisphere. “My immediate focus is launching Sassy and Boo in Marlborough,” says Alison. “There’s quite a lot of work there, particularly in ensuring we’re maintaining our high standards.” With soon-to-be eight stores in the group, does the owner think she will pursue opening more physical boutiques? “I’d never say never, but at this stage I can’t see us expanding the bricks-and-mortar business,” she concludes. “I think online growth will be our biggest focus for the years ahead. But you have to be adaptable as a retailer and open to considering every opportunity.” AUGUST 2022 | boutique. | 85
