Note from the guest editor - Adrian Conington It’s been a year now since we first launched The GOOD Times. A year since we launched GOOD, even. And this time last year we were celebrating 2016 and everything we’d achieved, talking about everything we hoped to achieve in 2017 and imagining what GOOD could become. THERE’S A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO, BUT WE SHOULDN’T LET SLIP ALL THE MILESTONES WE’VE HIT, THE BOUNDARIES WE’VE EXCEEDED AND THE GREAT HEIGHTS WE’VE REACHED.

Well, I think it’s safe to say that 2017 has been immense. We opened 2 new offices, made 25 internal hires and reduced the number of Liverpool supporters in the UK – missing you greatly Liam. There’s a lot to look forward to, but we shouldn’t let slip all the milestones we’ve hit, the boundaries we’ve exceeded and the great heights we’ve reached. BPS incorporated on the 22nd November 2004, Simon was just 35 – to put it into perspective, Sean was just 5. Our first real RPO was signed on 20th April 2006 with RWE Nukem (Nuvia) and this turned into a client partnership that lasted 10 years.

During this period, we went on to win agreements with several organisations, our reputation for sorting out problems growing. Probably to our detriment as we have clients subsequently believing what we do is easy, because we make it look easy by knowing our business well. During our journey we never stopped believing, never stopped growing and above all, never stopped dreaming. As we prepare to leave 2017 and think about starting 2018, take a minute to process all we have achieved in our 13 years of operation. What can you achieve in the next year? As we move towards company day where everyone in the business will be grouped for the first time, remember what’s been achieved in believing in our values - Excellence, Delivery, Commitment & Passion. Use this to drive you into making this quarter, the company day and 2018 a success for you, your colleagues, your company, your world.

Congratulations to you all – give yourselves a big round of applause!

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY GOOD EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT RACHAEL EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT WAS SELECTED AS A KEY BUSINESS OBJECTIVE FOR 2017 AS ENGAGED EMPLOYEES “ARE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER AND MORE FULFILLED, ARE MORE MOTIVATED AND DELIVER IMPROVED BUSINESS PERFORMANCE” (CIPD 2017). Employee engagement can be defined as the “extent to which employees feel passionate about their jobs, are committed to the organisation, and put discretionary effort into their work”. Our internal message relating to employee engagement is ‘We want you to be proud to be a BPS World team member and contribute to delivering GOOD Recruitment.

WHERE ARE WE TODAY? 2017 has been the start-up and implementation phase, researching what measures and metrics are important in relation to employee engagement. The charts below give a summary of our engagement from March 2017 to date.

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY WHERE NEXT? Moving into 2018 we will continue to track our metrics and measures, however the data will become more powerful as we’ll have comparisons from 2017. It will be at this stage that we’ll be able to start looking for key trends in employee engagement and business performance. We’ll also be able to look at our data sets from different locations, enabling us to work on appropriate regional initiatives. From a global People & Culture perspective we’ll be focusing on ‘Employee Experience’. This moves away from the individual aspects of HR (e.g. recruitment, employee relations, learning and development, culture, engagement, compensation and benefits etc.) and focuses on continually improving the entire employee journey as this is how you, our employees, experience it. This approach looks at everything that happens at work as an ‘integrated experience that impacts daily life in and outside of the workplace, including overall physical, emotional, professional, and financial well-being’ (Deloitte 2017).

The model below brings this to life and shows our focus for 2018.

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY GOOD SNBD - SIMON INCREASING OUR SUSTAINABLE NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT (SNBD) CAPABILITY WAS ALSO ONE OF THE KEY BUSINESS OBJECTIVES OF 2017. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, WE FOCUSSED ON PR, BRAND, DIGITAL, SALES, BID AND ACCOUNT DEVELOPMENT. THESE COMPONENTS ARE VITAL FOR A MATURE SALES CAPABILITY, AND OUR MISSION HAS BEEN TO BRING THIS ALL TOGETHER SO THAT WE CAN ACCURATELY FORECAST OUR GROWTH.

SO HOW DOES IT WORK? We need to contact the right person, with the right problem at the right time. A traditional approach is to cold call a lot of prospective contacts and know that through volume we will eventually hit the jackpot. The smart way of doing it is to let businesses know our value and attract them to us.

PUBLIC RELATIONS (PR) Through PR we are informing the business community about BPS and positioning ourselves as experts in all matters associated with Total Talent Management. An editorial or quote from BPS has more impact than advertising because people trust the source more.

Throughout 2017 we have continued to grow and now have weekly mentions in trade press, monthly mentions in national press, an increasing number of radio interviews, a series of company awards and we have just had a number one bestselling book on Amazon with “The Agile Revolution”. In short, the BPS name is becoming even more known.

BRAND Our brand remains strong and we have recently been informed that we have moved up the LinkedIn brand indexing league. In 2017 we evolved from “Rethinking Resourcing” to “GOOD”. There is lot that goes into this which includes campaigns, tone of voice, messaging and internal communication. Change is always a challenge but the results we have achieved are now becoming more noticeable as we bring “GOOD” to life. CRM AND DIGITAL Digital is a developmental area for BPS and has largely been considered the missing piece of the puzzle. This function allows us to effectively communicate and capture the interests of our growing customer communities, followers and prospects. Our desired outcome is to present the sales team with warm leads. This year we introduced Hubspot as our web platform and CRM. Having successfully populated it with all our prospect customer data, we are now beginning to communicate more effectively and identify potential customers quickly. This creates a smarter way of working and is also a key area of expertise of Richard Williams, our new Head of Marketing.

05

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY SALES 2017 saw the introduction of Mike and Matt (Business Development UK), Ana (Business Development Belgrade), David (Business Development Americas) and Tristan (Business Development Search). The sales pipeline is continuously growing, from introduction through to meetings and presentations. You will have already heard new customer names being mentioned and I can assure you there are many more to come. BID Our opportunities are getting bigger and bolder and as a result we need to understand how we will deliver on our

promises as well as convincing our customers of the same. In this endeavour, you will increasingly see meeting rooms being commandeered by bid teams creating detailed propositions. In 2017 our proposals have been very well received and our credibility is growing. ACCOUNT DEVELOPMENT Ensuring that our current customers benefit from the full value we can bring creates ongoing and regular conversations. Our ability to provide global solutions is being well received and developments this year have led to mutually beneficial expansions at Santa Fe, M+W, Bullitt and Infosys.

A SHARED FOCUS

IN 2017

One of the key business objectives of 2017 was to increase our profitability. We had a goal to support this which was to increase our revenue per billing consultant to an average £9,000 per month over the year. For those in the business at the beginning of the year you recall this goal was communicated clearly and consistently as we wanted it to become a shared focus.

HOW DID WE PLAN TO ACHIEVE THIS?

Utilising our Business Intelligence data, key metrics were identified that support this goal and greater focus and where required changes were implemented aimed at increasing our efficiency in each area. This would allow us to compare where we had improved and where we needed to improve further.

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY WHERE ARE WE AT YTD ON THE TARGET? Firstly, it’s worth stating our business has grown in all areas over the last 12 months. ADRIAN

An additional target of the UK business during 2017 was to maintain an operational overhead of £5,100 per employee, per month. We have achieved an average of £5,200 per head YTD. This is a significant achievement when considering all we have accomplished in such a short period of time.

Our growth has introduced both new operating overheads and increases to existing. This was expected and planned for. Existing costs increases have come from new hires, promotions/salary increases (18%), software licences, international job boards, travel costs and increased commissions. These increases were in part offset by renegotiation of telecommunication contracts and f Overhead premises leases achieving an approximate rget of the UK business during 2017 was to maintain an operational overhead of reduction ofachieved 48%anand loyee, per month. The split of vacancy type further contributed to the positive management of overhead. We significantly increased the quantity of contractor vacancies with the average time to hire being 26.7 days in comparison to 75 days for permanent placements. This allowed us to work on increased volume of vacancies and deliver to client need, again without requiring additional resource to fulfil requirements.

A significant contribution to tracking our £5,100 goal were the efficiencies gained by the Client Services team continuing to be more effective as the skills base has grown through ongoing development and tenure. This is evident in the 62% increase in offers and reduced the need to hire additional headcount above our resourcing plan and budget.

Shared Services also made a weighty contribution to overhead management in the UK with the addition of just one apprentice and the creation of the Platform Management role. Proportionate to the increase in vacancies, contractor volumes and growth of the business, Shared Services has actually shrunk. This is testament to work rate of the whole team and the efficiencies made through ongoing automation of a tech platform.

Andy Hurley and myself complete our Level 3 Certificate in Recruit Practise Exams and the wonderful Sadie Malkin complete her Level 2 Certificate in Recruitment Resourcing Exam earlier this year, quoting that she feels “it will make [her] look more credible in front of candidates and clients as they can see [she has] taken the time to do an apprenticeship and gain a qualification in recruitment.”

SO, IT’S TIME TO LEARN ABOUT THE WHO’S, THE WHAT’S AND A FEW OF THE WHY’S AS WE LOOK AT BPS’S 2017 GOOD LEARNING JOURNEY.

Jo Rapley, People & Culture Manager, has been a instrumental part of progress made by the team in BPS World “there have been so many developments this year from the introduction of the GOOD Learning & Development catalogue to the launch of LinkedIn Learning licences, and one of the biggest steps forward was the re-development of the Shining Stars Programme for employee’s grade 3 to 5”.

Now many of you will know that BPS World offers support for those who are looking to take their learning to the next level through a recognised qualification, but what are the qualifications available?

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY DAVID SHUTTLEWORTH

In Q3 we opened our new BPS office in Miami, grew our Serbian team, and pushed on with our planned growth in Asia.

2017 has been a hugely exciting and successful year of international growth, transition and development. Our year started by setting out our plans for change in our leadership roles; Liam to be our US President, myself to be Client Services Director and Adrian to assume Commercial and Operations Director. We had a really successful Q1 but narrowly missed out on our target trip to Berlin. The target rolled over to Q2 which was a record breaking quarter; it also saw the birth of BPS Serbia, a new client, Bullitt added to our portfolio, Santa Fe’s significant growth in global recruitment and a new longer-term relationship with 4Finance.

The summer wasn’t without its challenges though; we’ve learned to expect at least one bumpy quarter! But we headed into Q4 with a clear goal and a One Team approach. Lai is readily establishing our BPS footprint and DNA in Asia and Nick is pushing forward with new clients in the APAC region. We are a truly global business! We have GOOD people. We have the ambition. We have the opportunity ‘to be more’. And, yes, we will continue to grow and create opportunity. The stage is now set for an amazing 2018… where will the journey take us… and take you? “In today’s ever-changing world of recruitment, it is very exciting to be a part of an organization that believes in its people by willing to expand to other foreign countries. By entering and disrupting the global RPO space, BPS World will be branded as a true leader within the industry. As our client’s expand their organizations globally, BPS World will be recognized as their true international partner and rely on us for all of their TTM solutions. Having been a member of some of the largest firms within the industry, I was proud to announce my new role at BPS World.” – David Welch, Director of Business Development, USA

17

BUSINESS / FINANCE / ECONOMY MATT GRADY IT’S BEEN AN EXCITING YEAR OF CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TEAM

MIKE SMITH JOINED THE BUSINESS IN JUNE AND HAS BEEN UTILISING HIS BACKGROUND AND KNOWLEDGE WITHIN THE TECHNOLOGY MARKETS. MIKE HAS BEEN ABLE TO DEVELOP EXCELLENT RELATIONSHIPS WITH CEO’S AND THEIR BOARD OF DIRECTORS. WITH A NUMBER OF HIGH PROFILE MEETINGS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE IN Q3 AND A STRONG NUMBER IN THE DIARY FOR Q4 AND EARLY 2018.

The return of the Jedi – Tristan Chinn, BPS World’s 1st ever employee (contractually) returns to Head Search for BPS World. Tristan has already chalked up many victories and Searches within Q3 and Q4 and continues to develop his pipeline further into the new year.

Developing a niche in various UK and International markets, Tristan’s impact has been felt across the wider business, bringing business in during Q3 that has resulted in placements across BPS-World. Long may it continue.

Matt Grady joined the team as New Business Development Manager in July. Utilising a great network in Retail and Consumer markets, Matt has already held many high profile meetings with CEO’s and their boards and has a strong pipeline of new client meetings going into 2018. Taking advantage of Digitization globally, Matt’s key focus has been working on developing a footprint for BPS World with global Retail and Consumer CEOs who are on a digital journey. Major transformation and modernisation of their organisation leads to many opportunities for BPS - World to support their growth plans through TTM.

PROBLEM PAGE ASK ANDY

A RECRUITER WRITES: Dear Andy, I’ve been a recruiter for coming up to two years and I feel that I know a lot about the business. Recently I have been asked to work on some really challenging roles and it is making me question everything I have learned. My manager is supportive but is putting lots of pressure on me to produce results and I worry about letting the team down. Please can you help me

ANSWER: This is an issue that I have faced

many times in my career! Motivational speakers often tell their audiences to “be positive” in all aspects of their life. It’s easy to have a sunny disposition when everything is going your way, but it’s a totally different prospect when things don’t go according to plan. We all have what psychologists call a ‘negativity bias’ and this causes us to look for problems, even when the situation doesn’t warrant such negative responses. Our brain automatically goes into a negative mode when we sense a threat, and we’re often not even aware of it.

There are three major behaviours that affect your reaction to negative situations: how you filter information and interpret your environment, how you handle the challenges, and how you communicate and connect with others. Start by being optimistic, your optimism, sense of personal responsibility and personal beliefs shape the way you view the world. If you believe the future will be good, but understand that challenges may arise and things may not go as expected, you will feel less stressed by things. Secondly, believe in yourself. You are a capable and talented individual, you wouldn’t be here otherwise. Self-belief will give you the confidence to work with a clear head and react to the challenges you face. Finally, be positive! Positivity is infectious, it will help you and those around you to address any challenges you face. We work as one team and as part of that team you can influence not only yourself but those around you.

WORKING AS ONE TEAM ARE YOU STUCK IN YOUR “JOB-BOX”? FIND IT HARD TO THINK OUTSIDE OF IT AND CONSIDER WHAT OTHERS DO AND NEED?

1 TEAM We stopped sharing market knowledge, candidates, vacancies and as collective the accountability, which turned into a blame-game. Work can get so compartmentalised we don’t even talk to each other, even if the quality of the final product or service depends on it.

The key to our new approach lies in challenging the excesses of the ‘divide it up’ mentality - to break down artificial barriers between work areas and perforate those previously impenetrable brick-walls. Q4 now brings a big change to our working ways. When you’re ‘Working as One Team’ you can’t afford to operate in isolation if you want your whole organisation to succeed. Everyone in every team or work area needs to:

That was then, and this is now…

• Remain focused on the big picture and do what’s needed • Know and value each other’s roles, contributions, strengths and skills • Be willing to switch roles, help others and cultivate cross-boundary cooperation

Introducing the all new

‘Working as One Team’ approach!

SPORTS MATT SMYTH AS WE ALL KNOW, FITNESS IS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR IN MY PERSONAL LIFE. YES, MOST OF US ENJOY THE OCCASIONAL TIPPLE FROM TIME TO TIME BUT BEING GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE THE TOUGH MUDDER WITH BPS WORLD WAS ONE THAT I COULDN’T TURN DOWN!

Tough Mudder is set to test yourself mentally and physically, while requiring you to work as a team to complete the course. Our team set out a plan to conquer the course and do it in style! I had a great experience working with the team and watching us come together to help one another in our time of need. My favourite part of the course besides the Funky Monkey obstacle, was seeing certain individuals conquer their physical fitness challenges and persevere through pain. No PAIN, NO GAIN! Overall, completing the Tough Mudder with the team was amazing. There is nothing like putting you through hell and coming out the other side as one team. This course tested us in so many ways just like our day to day work but working together and pushing each other to exceed our expectations is what made our one team approach successful! I am looking forward to completing the next Tough Mudder event with BPS World! Are you?

GOOD INSIGHT ANDY GUNBY

017 HAS BEEN A YEAR OF SIGNIFICANT 2 GROWTH FOR BPS WORLD, WE’VE DEVELOPED OUR INFRASTRUCTURE, WE’VE DEVELOPED OUR GLOBAL FOOTPRINT AND WE’VE SIGNIFICANTLY DEVELOPED THE SERVICES WE OFFER TO OUR CLIENTS. WE SPOKE TO THE ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT TEAM TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO KEY ACHIEVEMENTS INTO OUR RPO CLIENTS. THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID…

HOW HAVE WE GROWN? • For the first time the M+W Group UK Contractor base tops 200 hundred contract workers, a 75% increase on 2016 continuing the year-on-year growth since the initial client agreement in 2013. This development saw record breaking revenue growth for this client. • There have been record breaking revenue months for M+W Group UK and Santa Fe with growth across the board for both accounts. • In partnership with 4Finance our people are growing, Andy Cruickshank has travelled and recruited across most of Europe. You’ve come a long way from Liverpool Andy! WHAT MAKES US (BUSINESS) INTELLIGENT?

WHAT MAKES US GLOBAL? • For Santa Fe BPS world delivered our first global graduate program. 18 placements across 3 regions, with a fee value of nearly £50,000. This project also saw the first paid for work provided by the superb BPS World L&D department. • For M+W Group UK Francine Stewart has travelled and travelled and travelled by plane train and automobile clocking up over 50,000 miles in 2017… whilst this travel has seen the account have a record number of recruits (222 and counting… ) it’s just a shame she’s not got to see anything outside of the British Isles. • BPS World signed a Global RPO agreement with Bullitt that has seen placements in the UK, Europe, N America, S America, and Asia.

• With strong Business Intelligence support the Santa Fe team delivered the First fully online recruitment schedule to a client, the Business Intelligence team have developed a schedule drawn directly from En-guage to provide up to date information to our clients • Fully automated contractor reporting through Power BI platform, giving M+W Group UK what they asked for… live access to data on their contractor workforce. How are we demonstrating that we are one team? • Developments in BPS World’s structure put us in a strong position to tender for an EMEA wide contractor management solution into M+W Group. This innovative proposal ties together services from the Business Intelligence, Recruitment Delivery, World solutions and BI teams to offer an integrated project solution.

SOCIETY / PEOPLE JO LEA

SOCIAL Social media plays an important role in showcasing our BPS World brand and ultimately attracting the best talent and new business to our organisation. From sharing our expert knowledge through blogging, statements in trade publications or showing our fundraising and social activities, we use social media to give people an insight to our organisational culture, who we are and what do we do. Developing content specific to our customer’ interests or discussing issues within their industry and providing solutions to these will only strengthen their attraction to us. a good example of this is the series of total talent management blogs we have written, addressing the growing concern of talent shortage post brexit and discussing the ways in which bps can solve this problem through our ttm approach.

AWARDS Since Company Day 2016 we saw Bradley Carton walk away with the IRP Apprentice of The Year Award, a great accolade for Bradley and for our Rising Stars programme. Bradley’s award has increased the credibility of the Stars programme and it is encouraging for new apprentices joining the business to see where the Rising Stars programme can take them.

“Please like and share our blogs” - a plea often posted on clubhouse! the reason: every time a blog or post is liked or shared on social media is enhances our social media presence and drives more traffic to our website!

The ‘cherry on top’ for the Rising Stars programme comes in the form of ranking in RateMyApprenticeship’s Top 100 Employers Table!

Did you know that companies who blog regularly get 5 times more traffic to their website than those who don’t? The top 3 social media sites are LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Until recently twitter was the only site to use hashtags but you may have noticed linkedin has adopted this style too. So, don’t forget to hashtag any key words in your job posts which will enable your post to show up in more searches. We always strive to increase our followers, we currently have over 47,000 followers on LinkedIn, over 600 on Twitter and 300 on Facebook. Our aim is to reach a wider audience so please keep sharing our GOOD content!

The IRP Awards shortlist was announced at the beginning of October and we were incredibly excited to have been nominated in all the four categories we had entered: Best Company to Work For (up to 150 people), Best Personal Development Business Award, Business Manager of The Year (Richard Jeffery) and Recruitment Apprentice of The Year (Natalie Winterton). The awards presentation is on 6th December so fingers crossed we will be returning to the office with some more trophies for our collection!

The success of our Rising Stars programme continued in February when we were awarded Gold by Apprenticeship4England for Best Apprenticeship programme and in June the Stars programme was shortlisted for Best Learning and Development Strategy at the HR Excellence Awards. We didn’t win, but it was very positive to see BPS World nominated along with large organisations including: Ranstaad, Santander and Transport for London.

Finally, we are also delighted to announce we have made LinkedIn’s Top 25 Most Socially Engaged list again. This year we have risen to #18 in the listings. There are over 60, 000 companies eligible for this award so to have made the Top 25 is an amazing achievement. Thanks to everyone for “likes” and “shares” of our company content on LinkedIn and for making us “Socially Engaged”.

CSR TEAM

WHATS’S NEW WITH YOU? As work load increased along with the size of the BPS World it was clear that a new member of the CSR team was needed. Hence the appointment of Joe Petty (JP) into the team. JP has hit the ground running and has taken over a lot of responsibilities of the CSC role including; CV Formatting, CV Importing, obtaining receipts/ contractor expenses, issuing PI/PLI assessments for Santa Fe, online ordering, and a lot more. Within this, frequent training sessions took place in order to get him up to speed with the above. JP has truly demonstrated GOOD in his first few months and has picked up the role very well.

2017 HAS SEEN THE CSR TEAM GO THOUGH MANY EXCITING CHANGES. As the CSE within the team, Gem has been massively busy spending her 3 days a week in the office as well as working from home on needed occasions managing 300 contractors and their contracts. She has taken full ownership of managing all the business contract extensions, as well as the HMRC quarterly reports. Processing of timesheets and supply chain. Gem is heavily involved in the day to day function of the CSR team and has taken the initiative to introduce a CSR Roadshow, which will educate the sales teams on contract procedures to ensure we continue to be a company of Excellence. Scott’s world in CSR this year has been a very busy but brilliant one. Early this year he completed his apprenticeship which was a wonderful way to start. By gaining additional CV’s from Warrington to import he was able to pass his full BPS apprenticeship in the same month (thanks Warrington!). This made him the fastest apprentice in BPS, until around 2 weeks later where Chris Casey decided to take that accolade for himself. The next challenge for Scott was entering the world of project management. This was a major step for him as he looked to complete the refurbishment of the upstairs office in Maidenhead. The refurb was successful, and he gained good feedback from both Client Services, Shared Services & Bizstrat members.

Finally, we have had the sad news of Jo Zebedee departing our shores. It’s the best thing for Jo and we all support her in her next move wherever it may take her. She was a massive part of our development and we are very appreciative that she was a member of our team.

A first for BPS World – we are a published author! Co-written with Onyx Communications “The Agile Revolution?” provides new and up to date information on agile working. Our research found that organisations that introduce agile working improve productivity, save on costs and find it easier to recruit. The book looks at how we no longer live in a “fixed “world – everything we do is mobile. The traditional workplace set up isn’t aligned to the way we live our lives and as we are used to living agile, why not work agile? The results of the book are based on research from company bosses and employees and show that attitudes towards “traditional” ways of working are shifting. For example, just over a third of British employees see the office as essential and just over a quarter of employers feel the same. The book gives a balanced view on the potential challenges of an agile workforce and the benefits it has for employers, including increased productivity and a reduced carbon footprint.
