CORE VALUE OF THE MONTH
WE PLEDGE TO FOSTER INCLUSION & BELONGING
We value the work of being anti-racist and truly accessible to our diverse population of learners, faculty, and staff, where every voice is encouraged, heard, and respected, and authentic selves are valued. In doing so, we strive to create an environment of not just mere inclusion but also true belonging.
For the month of June, we are placing a special emphasis on the Core Value, "We Pledge to Foster Inclusion and Belonging." Below you will find examples provided from the Community Week session and from other community conversations of how your colleagues are intentionally incorporating the Core Values into their work.
Here are some of the ways YOU are committing to this Core Value in your work:
Be mindful that students have different personalities, some are introverted, and some are extroverted. Be sure that those who want to speak feel free to do so as they desire. Others show participation and engagement in a different way and should not feel pressured to speak or have a grade depend on their verbal contributions.
Create multilingual welcome signs throughout campus on the digital board in admissions, Blake, Ryan Center, etc.
Be better at the incorporation of information about accommodations for students with learning and accessibility needs to prospective students through the admissions process. Make a point to get to know each student and ask them to educate us. We want to learn from them and build self-awareness.
Encourage students to join groups, mentor/help with different cohorts (Ex. 2nd years helping 1st years), and share resources.
Be more accessible to co-workers in different departments. Invite all opinions and ideas, and invite outside members to meetings when it makes sense. Encourage and promote study sessions and study groups. Make sure students feel included in the process and take a genuine interest in them and their lives. Value others' opinions and and ask for their input when needed. Build a rapport with students.
