You send your child to one of our top high schools because you believe education is an investment. That has not changed for us. An investment in education pays off for their future. They have more choices, they are motivated in ways other schools don’t even think, and they have an easier path to finding a passion. At these schools more resources are spent on giving individual attention to the student hence there is a tuition. These schools give the bulk of their attention to creating an atmosphere where their students will thrive at ‘the next level.’ Our schools have a graduation rate of nearly 100%, and while most public schools in NYC are still trying to figure out how to bring their students up to the proper reading level, our schools focus on getting their students to top colleges, while building on a myriad of ways to keep students motivated and engaged. While we visited a number of the schools we profile here, our research found that most students participate at least two extracurricular activities at our schools. This keeps them excited to get up every morning and go. Based on the extensive information we have compiled over a decade of coverage, questioning and investigation, this guide lays out the specific information for each of these schools. Learn from this guide and explore what these high schools have to offer in the way of helping their students get into top colleges across the nation. Advanced placement classes, after-school clubs and organized athletics are just part of everyday life in these schools.
How We Choose the Schools
typically be shared with the outside world. The questions we ask are intended to compare the academic, spiritual and social environment of each school. Some schools shared scholarship opportunities for eighth graders, and we suggest parents speak to admissions directors about those programs. Have your student prepared for an interview, as scholarships to our schools are not given haphazardly. Our schools work on getting their students prepared academically in order to be offered scholarship money to colleges. Most bragged about the average SAT scores of their students, some didn’t answer, but at the open house you should ask.. Some schools wouldn’t share enough information for us to make a determination on the quality of curriculum, program and student body, so they were not included on our list. But we’ve been on this beat for a decade-and-a-half now, so the schools know why we are calling each fall. Public high schools do not share information with us. Many have turned their large schools into two or three schools run by separate administrations, and that gives your child a shot at making it out of there in one piece but we find most public high schools in NYC will not prepare your students as well as our schools will. Themed public high schools have been getting good marks from parents. From where we sit, we have determined that it’s hit or miss with those schools. There is very little consistency. At our top schools, a larger percentage of students who score in the middle of the class in academics tend to get accepted and get scholarship money when it’s time for college. The trend in education is that high-achieving eighth-graders who might have attended one of the city’s specialized high schools in the past are now opting for a top private high school, often receiving some kind of academic scholarship. The reason is obvious when you see what these private schools are doing to compete for the top-notch students. They each have their own way of thinking outside the box to motivate their students for four years, but

105 Years of Tradition and Recent Innovations at the Kew-Forest School

Among Queens’ longest-running independent schools, The KewForest School recently celebrated its 105th anniversary. Known for its small class sizes, international enrollment, top college placements and elite alumni, the Kew-Forest of today is embracing evolving educational strategies while still holding on to core traditions, according to Head of School Tiffany D. Trotter. “It’s a school that’s big on tradition in some ways, and on innovation in others. And I would say there’s been a shift in the last five or 10 years thinking about different approaches that are more innovative — looking at an international approach, thinking about projectbased learning,” Trotter said. “Moving away from the kids in rows dutifully taking notes towards an approach where students are the center of learning and they have an active role and voice.” A crucial piece of evolving as a school, she said, is being open to collaborating with and learning
from other institutions. “It feels like the school is much more interested in having faculty engage with colleagues and professional development outside of the school,” Trotter said. “There was a time when lots of schools did all of that internally. The school is really opening up now and exploring what’s out beyond Forest Hills and beyond New York City that we can bring back to support the teaching and learning that’s happening here.” Part of this push towards collaborating with other schools is KewForest’s work with One Schoolhouse, a consortium that allows students to take online courses with teachers and students from other independent schools across the country, according to Trotter. Individual teachers at Kew-Forest have also embraced this philosophy of learning outside the walls of the school, including a pen pal relationship with a school in Korea and an educational trip to Costa Rica planned for the spring for science and language classes. As the 10th head of school since
1918, Trotter is the second woman and first person of color in the role, according to Jade Wiederholt, director of marketing & communications. “A lot of our changes have been in parallel to the changes that have happened in Queens,” Trotter said. “Demographically, Queens has shifted a lot in the last 100 years. It’s always been a place where you get a ton of immigrants landing, and this school has been a place that allows people to get access to independent education and go on from there to find their footing, in a place that might be new to them or to their parents.”
Trotter emphasized Kew-Forest’s small class sizes as a defining element of the education students receive there. “Building relationships is critically important, and not just with your peers or people who are the same age,” Trotter said. “When I listen to university admissions folks talk about students now, as a result of the pandemic, they don’t connect with one another in the same ways. That’s something I think we’ve managed to preserve, their understanding that human relationships are at the core of everything they’re going to be able to do moving forward.”

As part of the Cristo Rey Network of catholic preparatory schools, Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School offers a unique opportunity for students to develop four years of career-focused work experience alongside their studies with partners including American Express, Deloitte and Latham & Watkins. Cristo Rey also emphasizes a commitment to making preparatory catholic education more accessible to low income and first generation students, according to principal Deanna Phillippe. “Our mission has always been to serve students who otherwise might not have the opportunities,” Phillippe said. “Every Cristo Rey, whether they’re in New York or Chicago or LA, that’s our goal. And we want to be screaming from the mountain top that this option is available to families.” Through the Corporate Work Study program, students at Cristo Rey spend one day each week at their chosen partner office where
they work alongside lawyers, bankers, doctors and more to develop professional skills. “The Work Study program is really our secret sauce,” Phillippe said. “Our kids are getting professional work experience. That rigor and that balance of student life, athletics, academics and work is really what sets our kids apart to really crush college when they get to that next level. We’re seeing tremendous retention rates in college and I really think that is the difference.” In recent years, medical fields have become more accessible to Cristo Rey students through this program, according to Phillippe, through partnerships with hospitals such as NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital and Brooklyn Hospital after the pandemic. “The medical field has opened its doors to us more than we anticipated and we’re excited about that,” Phillippe said. “With such a high demand and a need for more hands and more support in the medical field, we now have more partnerships with hospitals than we ever have before and private practices.”
After the difficulties of the pandemic and navigating the return to in-person learning, Phillippe said the start to this school year has been encouraging as students’ spirits seem to finally be back in full swing, marked by the return of Cristo Rey’s seniors vs teachers vol-
leyball game for the first time since before the pandemic. “There’s been a lot of joy in the building,” Phillippe said. “We always psych ourselves up to be excited about the new year, us adults, but it actually feels that way this year. The energy is pretty palpable.”

Dominican Academy, in Manhattan, says more than 25% of its students live in Queens or Brooklyn. It’s just a short train ride away.

4 Queens Schools Receive Blue Ribbon Scholarships BY OONA MILLIKEN

Four new schools in the Queens district have been designated as recipients of the Blue Ribbon Scholarship Program. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the Blue Ribbon Program awards any school of academic excellence within a particular community or academic subgroup. Congresswoman Grace Meng made the announcement on Sept. 20. There were four schools that received awards in Congresswoman Meng’s district this year: P.S. 205, the Alexander Graham Bell School in Bayside; P.S. 242Q, the Leonard P. Stavisky Early Childhood School in Flushing; P.S. 244, the Active Learning Elementary School (TALES) in Flushing and P.S. 303, The Academy For Excellence Through The Arts in Forest Hills. Though P.S. 205, P.S. 242Q and P.S. 244 have all received Blue Ribbon Awards in the past, this is the first time that P.S. 303 has been nominated and awarded. In a statement, Meng said she
congratulated the schools for their hard work and dedication to achieving strong educational merit. “Being named a Blue Ribbon School is an outstanding achievement and I congratulate these local schools for attaining this prestigious recognition,” Meng said in a statement. “It underscores the hard work and dedication of the entire school team, and I am proud to have the schools in my congressional district and serving children in our communities. Our kids are our future, and their education must always be a top priority.” In the 40 years that the National Blue Ribbon Scholarship program has existed, only 353 schools across the nation have been awarded. Robert Groff, the principal for P.S. 244, the Active Learning Elementary School, said it was an honor to receive the award for a second time, and that it was gratifying to see all the hard work from faculty, staff, students and parents be recognized. “It’s wonderful for [the staff] to see that their work is recognized.
We feel that from the families, but it’s great to see it from the highest honor a school can get. It’s really about how we do it all together, the school and the communities,” Groff said. “Our staff worked very hard. And they want to work with families and be true partners in the kids’ education. It’s a testament to that partnership, and that we work together as a community.” Jill Pritchard, the principal for P.S. 242Q, the Leonard P. Stavisky Early Childhood School, said the award was important and that it symbolized the hard work the teachers, staff, parents and community put into creating an atmosphere of educational excellence.
“The recognition is wonderful, but it’s the process that got us there. That is what we celebrate. What we do on a daily basis from greeting each other with smiles to making sure that every member of our community feels welcome here and has input and drives the decisions of the school,” Pritchard said. “I would say that we are delighted to receive this honor as a school that prioritizes meeting the academic and social emotional needs of all children. The staff and the administration work together to make sure that students, and now I’m going from my mission, feel valued, supported and loved.”

Dominican Academy, an allgirls Catholic school located in the heart of the Upper East Side, is like a family, according to school President Dr. Alexandria Egler, who has been in her position since July 2022. Egler said the school is small and fluctuates between 240-250 students due to the size of their campus and a desire to maintain a small class size. “I think that’s an advantage because there’s individualized attention. If you’re looking for a school to get lost in the crowd, this is not the school,” Egler said. “Faculty and staff here at D.A., when those 240 students walk into our door every day, they become our daughters. That’s the kind of atmosphere we have here.”
Dominican Academy, which first opened in 1897, is the third highest-ranked Catholic girls’ high school in New York State, with a student ratio of 9:1. For languages, they offer Mandarin, Latin, Spanish and French, and the school is rigorously academic, with 100% of students going on to attend 4-year colleges and universities. The 2023 graduating class garnered close to $19 million in merit-based scholarships and grants for their future collegiate endeavors.
