TOP HIGH SCHOOLS

These High Schools are on Top of Education Trends

The schools we profile here have been on the ball with strategy and innovation for years. These schools have a graduation rate of nearly 100%, and while most public high schools we looked at are still trying to figure out how to handle a fire drill, our schools focus on getting their students to top colleges, and build on a myriad of ways to keep students motivated and engaged. Keeping teens focused and engaged enough to look for a passion ….. for anything, is a top priority. While interests and passions change, motivation and curiosity shouldn’t. We have visited the schools we profile and we see that most students participate at least two extracurricular activities. Students appear to be excited about going to school every day. One fact of note from our top high schools this year; their top students are not necessarily going the route of Ivy League Colleges. In years past they would

‘Top Students Not Opting for Ivy’

boast about their top students going to Columbia or Harvard. We see a trend towards attending a college which gives them the best scholarship dollars. More students are going to colleges like McGill - in Montreal, Fordham, St Johns, Villanova and still some are going to St Andrews in Scotland. “It makes you think,” said one high school administrator who asked not to be identified, “… why would a top student want to be caught up in all the distracting protests at some of these schools on a daily basis. They want to concentrate on school. So the best students are opting for other schools.

Open House Tours This Month

We seemed to have just started the academic school year, but it’s already time for open houses for next year’s student. This year is actually quite encouraging for students looking to enter 9th grade for the 2025/2026 term. Openhouse programs are happening this month and some new initiatives have come out, some of which are innovations coming from having to deal with new learning programs. Enrollment is up at St. Francis Prep in Fresh

Meadows, Queens who tells us they had to close admissions because they were full. Kew Forest School, in Forest Hills, says they have students representing 70 nationalities. Their advance placement offerings are ‘off-thecharts.’ Their on-campus open house is November 16th. They tell us their kindergarten class is the biggest they’ve had in years, having to hire an extra teacher. The teacher – student ratio at Kew Forest is the lowest of the schools in this issue.

If you have been reading our weekly newspapers and following our 17-year tradition of the Top High Schools Issue, it makes sense that the high-quality education, core of extra-curricular activities and ability to be nimble, have led to increases in enrollment at these schools over the last few years. Visit the open houses at these schools, even if just to compare. It’s a fun field trip nevertheless. If you are sending your student to high school for the next four years, it’s imperative you get a feel for what is going on at high schools. It won’t disappoint.

How We Chose the Schools

We sent questionnaires to dozens of private high schools in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan for our 2024 issue. In order to make the cut, 90 percent of the graduates must go on to college. Admissions directors need to answer 90 percent of our probing questions and they have to boast a full roster of extracurricular activities. We speak to parents, students, alumni, teachers and administrators. We are actually able to obtain interesting information that might not typically be shared with the outside world. The questions we ask are intended to compare the academic, spiritual and social environment of each school.

Schools shared scholarship opportunities for eighth graders, and we suggest parents speak to admissions directors about those programs. Some schools told us that they have 50% of their students receive some kind of financial aid or reward. Have your student prepared for an interview, as scholarships are not given haphazardly. Scholarship money that graduating seniors were offered by colleges is crucial

in our evaluations. Most bragged about their average SAT scores. Some schools wouldn’t share enough information for us to make a determination on quality of curriculum, program and student body, so they were not included on our list. But we’ve been on this beat for a decade-and-a-half now, and administration doesn’t change very much, so the schools know why we are calling each fall.

Public high schools do not share information with us. Many of the newer public high schools are now small, and that gives a child a shot at making it out in one piece. Themed public high schools have been getting good marks but they say they can’t give us the information we need, so we can’t evaluate them. Maspeth High Schoolwas bragging about getting blue ribbons for academics a few years ago, until it was found out that some were ghost classes and kids were being passed while not even showing up.

From where we sit, we have determined that it’s hit or miss with

most of the public high schools. There is very little consistency. Renaissance School in Jackson Heights is a charter school that we have visited. Without looking at grade statistics, it seems the school is doing a nice job. At our top schools a larger percentage of students who score in the middle of the class in academics tend to get accepted and get plenty of scholarship money when it’s time for college.

The trend in education is that high-achieving eighth-graders who might have attended one of the city’s specialized high schools in the past are now opting for a top private high school, often receiving some kind of academic scholarship. These private schools compete for top-notch students. They each have their own way of thinking to motivate their students for four years, but they have a few things in common. They work fairly hard at getting all their students into top colleges, and

Innovative Programming at Schools: A Key to Student Success

As educators and administrators strive to empower students for future success, special and unique programming has become increasingly vital in schools. Tailored academic offerings not only ignite student interest but also prepare them for future challenges in a rapidly evolving world. Two institutions making significant strides in this area are St. John’s Preparatory School in Astoria and St. Vincent Ferrer High School on the Upper East Side.

Founded in 1870 by the Vincentian Brothers, St. John’s Prep is a private, fully accredited Catholic college preparatory school committed to fostering a rigorous and engaging curriculum. With a mission to nurture young men and women intellectually, artistically, physically, and spiritually, the school has recently enhanced its science offerings, creating a dynamic learning environment for its students.

Central to this initiative is the introduction of advanced laboratory facilities, including a cutting-edge Anatomage table. This 3D anatomical visualization tool allows students to explore the human body in a hands-on manner, providing a level of engagement that traditional textbooks cannot match.

“We have recently updated our labs, and one of the big areas we’re looking at is STEM,” Maria Johnson, Principal at St. John’s Prep said.

The anatomage table, installed nine months ago, has helped advance the anatomy and physiology curriculum at St. John’s Prep. Students can perform virtual dissections, gaining insights into both the external and internal structures of the human body. This innovative approach not only excites students but also aligns with the school’s goal of preparing them for future studies in science and medicine.

“The anatomage table is sort of a 3D rendering of the human body,” Johnson said. “It’s not just, you know, the textbook, it’s not just a slide from a PowerPoint presentation. It’s all hands-on. Students want to go to the lab all the time, and the idea is that they are able to work the machine.”

In addition to the anatomage table, St. John’s Prep has revamped its chemistry and engineering labs, offering new courses that reflect the interests and aspirations of its students. The school now provides an engineering class for juniors and seniors, complemented by state-ofthe-art facilities and technology.

“We are constantly looking at what the newest programs are at the collegiate level.”,” Johnson said, emphasizing the school’s commitment to staying at the forefront of educational innovation.

Furthermore, the school offers a forensic science program in

partnership with the New York Hall of Science, allowing students to delve into criminology through hands-on experiments that mirror real-world investigative practices. This program is particularly popular among upperclassmen, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications in a way that resonates with students.

St. John’s Prep also embraces innovative approaches in the humanities, with its English department engaging students through podcasting. This initiative encourages students to analyze literature and share their insights with a broader audience, reinforcing their communication skills and creativity.

In addition to its innovative science programs, St. John’s Prep offers a unique baccalaureate program in partnership with St. John’s University, allowing seniors to attend the university during their fourth year of high school.

Unlike traditional AP or college extension courses, this program enables students to experience college-level classes firsthand, and many participants consistently achieve high academic performance, often landing on the Dean’s list. This initiative not only prepares students for higher education but also provides significant financial benefits, as the first year of college is effectively covered, representing substantial savings for families given the $45,000 annual tuition at St. John’s University.

St. Vincent Ferrer High School, an independent college-preparatory Roman Catholic institution for girls located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is dedicated to empowering young women in their academic and professional pursuits. Among its standout initiatives is the Ferrer Pre-Med Advantage Program, a two-year program designed for motivated and disciplined juniors and seniors who aspire to careers in medicine or science. This program offers a robust curriculum that includes advanced courses such as biochemistry, organic chemistry, physiology, and anatomy, alongside a host of handson opportunities that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Courtesy St. John’s Preparatory School The Anatomage Table at St. John’s Prep provides an immersive, hands-on experience that enhances students’ understanding of human anatomy through virtual dissections.

TOP HIGH SCHOOLS

Our Top High Schools Are Thriving

Continued from S3

they treat every student like they are important. At The Mary Louis Academy, an all-girls school in Jamaica Estates, the conversation about college begins in the ninth grade. Their College Placement Program works on matching students to colleges that match their passions and interests.

Martin Luther School in Maspeth is having a few students interested in journalism do an internship with us at the Queens Ledger.

- St. John’s Prep’s Baccalaureate Program, in partnership with St. John’s University, enables students to get college credit early on.

- Our Top High Schools have the flexibility to reach out to institutions of higher education and learning facilities to develop partnerships. They include college credit courses and the opportunity for seniors to visit the college campus for classes to

get a feel for the next level. Call a school on our list and ask about college interaction programs. Ask to talk to one of the seniors involved. A critically important aspect of choosing the right school includes your thoughts on the steps following the high school years. Many of our schools have ‘recommending’ relationships with colleges.

If watching the news about the drama in getting an education in the public school system is a maze that’s just too much to navigate, let us give you the lowdown on our schools. Catholic Schools and private schools are doing quite well with blended learning and in-classroom work.

“Enrollment is up and we have a full schedule of academic, clubs and athletics,” said Nick Melito, president of Monsignor McClancy High School in East Elmhurst. McClancy wants you to reserve a time for the open-house tour again this year. “We just have so many people who want to see the school that day it makes it better

for the families and us as well,” said a spokesperson at the school.

Being nimble and attentive sets our schools apart from other choices in education. Through a set of standards and criteria each school was willing to share, we have chosen those top high schools for you to explore. After a series of discussions with teachers, administrators, parents and students, we have assembled the information you need to focus on the right type of education for your student.

Incidentally, cell phones are not banned, but we see these schools have cubbyholes in a spot in the classroom for students to put them during class. We find that refreshing.

Holy Cross High School, which boasts an average SAT score of above 1250, and St. Vincent Ferrer, where the student-tofaculty ratio is lower than most, are examples of how private, faith-based schools differ from public high schools. Dominican

Academy, an all-girls school in Manhattan, offers AP Italian Language and has a ‘maker space’ with 3D printing, and during the open house at Msgr. McClancy, in East Elmhurst, you will hear about their GOOGLE classroom and a future engineers partnership with Amazon. St. John’s Prep in Astoria, runs a ‘Campus Life Retreat Program.” Be sure to ask about it when visiting. High achievement, innovative programs and challenging curriculum is normal for these schools. They are also seeing interest in a forensic science, so they started a course of study in forensics as a course in their science program.

Project based learning has become a staple that faculty is seeing as highly effective, because it puts students in the driver’s seat and encourages discovery rather than memorization at Kew Forest School. In project-based learning, which is not new, but is being used as a core curriculum.

the students put on an International Night with foods, songs and dances.

Model U.N. and Speech and Debate teams compete in various tournaments.

The school newspaper, The Seraph, and the Yearbook are great publications and often win awards for excellence. The Little Portion is the school literary arts magazine. It features the writing and art work of our students.

Our intramural program allows students who do not compete on interscholastic teams to play sports and compete with classmates. Our outstanding Athletic program offers 40, 9th through 12th grade team opportunities for student-athletes in the highly competitive Catholic High School Athletic Association.

Unique Academic Programs

The desired learning objectives dictate the products and artifacts within the project. Students plan a garden, and then decide which learning objectives and academic standards fit that idea, planning backward. They look first at the learning objectives and academic standards are the core of the lessons. After which they brainstorm project ideas and components of that project as the standard. The objective of the lesson would be to feed a few families for a month and a number of projects would be undertaken as the lesson, one being to build a garden while another might be to design packaging for the food, then a logistical system for distribution.

We continue to see a trend in a high-school students transferring from public schools to the top schools we profile here. We suggest you think about a progressive, more personalized education at one of the private high schools based on the extensive information we have compiled over a decade of coverage, questioning and investigation. Learn from this guide and explore what these high

schools have to offer in the way of helping their students get into top colleges across the nation. Advanced placement classes, after-school clubs and organized athletics are just part of everyday life in these schools.

Mentoring, college coordinators and peer-to-peer counselors are routine. Faith and moral character are in the DNA of the experience at most of these schools, so if that’s not for you then just stop here and go to the entertainment section of our newspaper. But we find the schools are culturally and religiously diverse.

After doing the research, we can assure parents that our Top High Schools are worth the investment in your child. Visit a school’s website, and you will see that there might be as many as five sports teams in action on a given day, and there seems to be something for the student body to do every weekend.

Some schools offer niche programs which are consistent with their brand. There is no shortage of high school teachers and program coordinators at these schools, who passionately work

to get their students involved with fun activities and then walk them through getting to their college of choice.

We continually tell you about Astoria’s St. John’s Prep, where they build on their Black Box Theatre program, which, through our reporting over the years, have inspired dozens of students to go into the arts as a lifestyle. A visit to this school on off hours often sees a handful of inspired staffers working with students on perfecting their art. Archbishop Molloy continues to offer a video broadcast club. Msgr. McClancy offers scholarship to students with a talent and interest in the performing arts. They say performing arts, theatre and music is a big part of student life at their school – and they want to reward students who come in with the interest and talent to keep that high level of achievement on campus. Martin Luther Schoolin Maspeth is increasingly emphasizing digital literacy, partnering with Apple to put their students ahead of the curve. In recent years each student received a new iPad and uses them in a broad range of classroom learning situations. Another overwhelming attraction

to an education at our top schools is the culture and connection that exists after graduation. The core beliefs are in their DNA. At St. Francis Prep it’s – to lead lives of justice, integrity and compassion.

Take the Extra Step

If price is keeping you from considering one of these schools, we find that these schools typically want your child if your child wants them. Contacting the financial aid department at one of the schools does not raise a red flag about your child. In fact it helps. These schools want students who have a passion for their school, so they make an effort to figure out how to get you financial aid. You will have to pay something, but if your student shows that he or she is willing to work and contribute something positive to the school community, they will get you in. It’s worth the investment.

After exploring the options in this special issue, attend open houses over the next few weeks and talk to an admissions director. If they find your child is likely to succeed, you should qualify for scholarships or aid.

The Ferrer Pre-Med Advantage Program is uniquely structured to provide students with valuable experiences that enhance their understanding of the medical field. Participants are not only required to engage in specialized science courses but also encouraged to pursue internships at local hospitals and research institutions. These summer research opportunities allow students to immerse themselves in various medical settings, giving them firsthand experience in fields like pediatric nursing and medical research.

Dr. Kumar, who oversees the program, notes that around 7080% of the program’s graduates go on to pursue careers in medicine, pharmacy, or related fields, illustrating the program’s success in guiding students toward their professional goals.

“About 80% of the kids somehow end up in some kind of medical area, lots of physicians, a lot of doctoral pharmacy and research in medical sciences.”

One of the program’s key advantages is its focus on female empowerment in STEM disciplines, addressing a crucial gap in many high schools. Dr. Kumar emphasizes the importance of encouraging young women to excel in advanced sciences and mathematics, aiming to dispel the fears often associated with these subjects.

“They have to take certain specific courses that are pertaining to medical sciences, like advanced biochemical, medical biochemistry, organic chemistry, physiology, anatomy,” Kumar said.

Despite our size, anyone who walks through our doors instantly senses what a close-knit community we are. In the tradition of St. Francis, all members of our community are welcomed, nurtured, and supported. We all work together to create a respectful and inclusive environment where students can succeed. Freshmen have the chance to become acclimated with the school at events like Orientation, Strategies for Success, and Freshmen Follies. Our annual Walk-a-Thon is a fun and spirited day where we all come together to fundraise and support future generations at SFP. Students at St. Francis form friendships and bonds that often endure after high school, and this incredible community is only one of many reasons that we say “High School is four years, St. Francis Prep is forever.”

the culture and do something for the planet.”

Before jet-setting, students go through a weekly science and cultural educational program to learn about Costa Rican culture and deforestation in the region. Some of the students cooked Costa Rican foods and brought them to class. Gambra-Sposato said one of the goals was to minimize culture shock. Students arrived in the country knowing some of the Costa Rican foods to expect.

Last trip, eighteen students planted mangrove trees. Mangrove trees, which mostly live in salt water, have been decimated by the shrimp farming industry and deforestation for palm oil, rice, and rubber tree farming. Costa Rica is one of the leading conservationist countries in the world. The country won the Champions of the Earth award from the United Nations Environment Program in 2019.

about conservation. Shaykat is interested in international relations and wants to pursue environmental engineering. However, he said seeing conservation efforts in action topped his classroom learning.

“But being in the classroom and learning all this data while being in an air-conditioned room is a lot different than actually helping out with it,” Shaykat said.

Ligaya Cullo, another junior, said that the mangrove planting was one of the best parts of the trip. This part also reminded her of helping on her family’s farm. She is interested in conservation biology as well.

Shaykat also said it was fun to see how fair-trade coffee and chocolate farms work, especially after learning about labor issues surrounding production. To be Fair Trade certified, companies have to prove that their production meets guidelines for working conditions and sustainability.

Students also visited beaches, ziplined the Cloud Forest, and kayaked near an active volcano. Shaykat and Cullo remarked how the trip was also a nice getaway
