One of the most important functions of the Chamber is advocating on behalf of our members – the over 1400 businesses that employ over 150,000 people in Queens County. It is important that our elected officials hear about the challenges businesses face, and what they can do to help.
Earlier this month, we set off to the State Capitol with hundreds of business leaders from throughout the borough for our annual Queens Day in Albany. The day gives our members an opportunity to meet with our legislators, express their concerns.
I want to thank everyone who came up with us, especially the 40 Queens-based restaurants who fed us at our Taste of Queens reception. Thanks to you, the strength and diversity of Queens’ business community was on full display.
‘Queens Day’ Made Albany Jealous Loving This Weather
It’s hard to believe summer is almost here, but it will soon be time for barbecues and days at the beach. We’ve had a busy spring here at the Queens Chamber, and will continue through the summer with tons of great networking events throughout the borough and opportunities to learn from experts about how to grow your business.
And coming up on June 4, we have our annual Business Expo at Citi Field! We hope you’ll join us for an exciting day, featuring over 140 exhibitors, multiple panel discussions and some very exciting announcements.
On behalf of the Board of Directors at the Queens Chamber, I want to thank you for all you do for our borough’s business community. I hope you and your families have a great summer.

QUEENS NEWS Preparing Your Business For Growth
By: Anastasia N. MalagisiI’m often asked, “Who uses self-sto rage?” As self-storage operators, we categorize our customers, or demand drivers, into three categories:
- People in transition – those displa ced due to an unforeseen circumstance orplanned event (i.e.: moving, home purchase, job change, etc.).
- Lifestyle choices – those that need to declutter for various reasons.
- Business – commercial customers who often need flexible terms and more affordable solutions for their business.
Each of these demand drivers has allowed us to customize and
adapt our business for the everyday needs of our cus tomers to ensure that we have what they need when they’re ready to use self-storage. It’s typical that someone is not looking for self-storage until it is needed. However, someone may not necessarily realize it is a good option for them as they start to weigh the pros and cons of the scena rio they’re in.
In general, business customers often use self-storage close to where they operate their business for convenience purposes. This can include professio nals such as landscapers, contractors, pharmaceutical reps, and those that need to keep their inventory out of a basement… if they have a basement!
Of course, there’s other needs too. Whe ther you’re expanding the office, opening a new storefront, or launching a startup, you need affordable and flexible space options to grow. Traditional flex, office, or retail spaces may require longer and more expensive lease terms, and they often charge you a price per square foot. This includes utilities and taxes. There are al ternative
spaces though to help cultivate your commercial growth in so many smart ways. Here’s how self-storage can help with your business’ growth.
You Have Room to Move Furniture Don’t pass up a great deal on new office furniture. When it’s time to expand operations and you’re ready to furnish ex tra office space, you can store the desks and chairs you bought on a month-to-mon th basis until needed.
Bulk Supplies Hold Down
Costs Every penny counts when you’re growing your business. Bulk buying strategies can help you hold down the bottom line. Everything from inventory and printing paper to cleaning supplies costs less in bulk, and you now have space to keep it all handy nearby and secured. Buying bulk saves money and time that you can reinvest in growing your business.
Inventory Forecasts Stay Manageable It’s easier to increase upscale retail sa les when you have plenty of available inventory. Quick access lets you stock according to your schedule, and you do it from a unit that
costs a fraction of what you pay for showroom square footage.
Office Floor Space Stays Flexible While building your business means adding new employees, business self-storage gives you flexible floor space. Rearrange the workplace with those discounted desks and chairs stored off-site. Expand room for a growing staff without knocking down walls to expand existing office space.
You Always Have Options With climate-controlled storage, you lease as little or as much square foo tage as you need. Drive-up units make heavy on- and off-loading easy, and our seven locations in Queens handle customer package acceptance and de liveries. You can manage your account online so that it always fits your plans for growth. Whether you’re staking out new territory or branching out, modern business storage expands your options for success.
The Heart Of Broadway Beats In Queens
By: Michael PresserYes, Queens has its own Broadway, and its own BroadwayFlushing neighborhood. But that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about Broadway with the bright lights and the musicals and the orchestra pits and the dancers. The one you might think is in Manhattan, but which is, truly, all around us.
Queens is multi-cultural, rich with sto ries, and, for the most part, middle and working class. Just like Broadway. Musicals were never meant to be hoi tytoity affairs for the mega-wealthy. They were written for hardworking moms and dads who needed a night out. Many of them came to our city from distant countries. And who to day has
more hard-working moms and dads who were born in distant countries than the glorious borough of Queens?
For 40 years, I’ve been bringing Broadway shows to New York City public school kids and New York City school kids to Broadway shows. Today my nonprofit is called “Inside Broadway.” Every year when
we visit schools in Queens, or bring kids from Queens to see a show on the Great White Way, the connection is palpa ble. The chords always strike a chord.

DINE AND DISCOVER QUEENS
La Cevicheria By De Mole Is In The Spotlight
It’s “Dine and Discover Queens’’ time! “Dine and Discover Queens” is a spotlight on some of the best restaurants around the borough! In this issue, we are featuring La Cevicheria by De Mole located at 42-20 30th Avenue in Astoria. Ramiro Mendez is the head chef and co-
founder of the establishment. To learn more, go to https:// demoleatastoria.com/.
What inspired the creation of your restaurant and how did you get your start?
The inspiration behind this location stems from the memorable trip my wife and I took to the beautiful coasts of Oaxaca. We wanted to bring my version of this side of Mexico to New York City. I started with my first restaurant in Sunnyside, Queens, where I prepared my mother’s Mole Poblano recipe using my family’s cooking techniques. Having worked as a chef in renowned establishments
such as El Teddy’s and The Park, both unfortunately no longer in operation, I had the opportunity to explore, and try and taste different ingredients and now use them here.
Can you share a bit about your restaurant journey in Queens?
The journey has been tough with COVID-19. Business has been slow, and city residents have been moving out, but we have hope and faith in this location with the new concept and a lot of love for Astoria. We know that the residents from the area, as well as from all over New York City, will love this restaurant.
Are there dishes or drinks that have become beloved by the Queens community, or anything on your menu you would like to highlight?
We serve all our dishes with our signature sauce, Mole Poblano. We have an assortment of ceviches that we do that people enjoy, and the house margarita is also a win. Our flavors and taste are unique. Most importantly, we keep consistency in our recipes and dishes.

Jake Shild, Founder And CEO Of LandSkyAI
This month’s featured tech entrepreneur is Jake Shild, the Founder and CEO of LandSkyAI, a provider that has reimagined the robotics industry by using innovative solutions that proactively and effectively optimize safety, security and inspection processes. To learn more, go to https://www.landsky. ai/.
Can you tell us a little more about your company and how you got your start?
LandSkyAI is a turnkey provider of automated robotics for logistic and safety purposes. Our goal is to make the adoption of robotics simple and we do that through an innovative package based on autonomous aerial and ground robotics. We work with best-in-class manufacturers of robotic technology and combine it with on-site integrations, video
analytics, and human-backed services such as maintenance and remote operators to control the systems. What we offer is a fully automated solution requiring little work for customers.
What connection do you and your team have to Queens?
I was originally born in Queens before moving Upstate, or to “the Sticks” as my brother-in-law from Queens calls it. My family has always had an integration business based in College Point where I’ve spent plenty of time. When starting LandSkyAI, it only made sense to come to Queens to take advantage of the diverse and skilled workforce along with the many amenities of being in a place like Long Island City.
What is your latest project, and why are you excited about it?
Our latest project is seeing us do remote drone security for a manufacturing site just outside the tri-state area. In this project, we are leveraging a fully automated drone-in-a-box system which means the drone takes off from

and lands in a “box” or “hangar” where it charges on its own. No on the ground involvement is needed, and our team has the processes to completely remotely manage this project. This is the future of security. all.
In a recent success story, Yesodot worked in collaboration with the District Attorney’s office to provide crucial support for a domestic violence case involving a vulnerable individual. Through
their partnership, the individual received the care and protection they deserved, highlighting the impact of Yesodot’s commitment to serving those inneed.
Another inspiring success story from Yesodot involves their waiver program for children with developmental disabilities, mental health needs, and me dical fragility. Emily, a 10-year-old girl with autism and severe medical fragility, was struggling to access the specialized care she required.
Through Yesodot’s waiver program, Emily was able to receive personali zed support, including medical services, therapy, and educational resources. Today, Emily is thriving, thanks to the dedicated
support and advocacy provided by Yesodot.
As we look to the future, organizations like Yesodot continue to play a vital role in empowering communities and creating positive change. QUEENS NEWS Spices
By: Shirley Agnela Menezes SharmaI could not live without them. They envelop all the cooking I do. If my kids do not have spices in their food they do not find the food tasty enough. Spices make for varie ty in dishes. A vegetable, fish, meat or a bird can be cooked in a myriad of ways with spices.
I also use spices and herbs to treat common ailments. For a toothache a clove works wonders. Put one clove on the tooth that is aching and bite down on it – the toothache will shortly disappear (cloves have numbing pro perties). Ginger helps relieve
cold symptoms and is great on the stomach. My kids eat raw ginger to stop bilious attacks. Sushi ginger is not a substitute for raw ginger to stop vomiting. My twoyear old son would yell “picy” “picy” but he ate the crushed raw gin ger and trusted it to help.
Curcumin, which is the active ingre dient in turmeric, “has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibac terial, antifungal, and anticancer acti vities and thus has a potential against various malignant diseases, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and other chronic illnesses,” according to a review in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology. A glass of milk with a half a teaspoon of turmeric stirred in it, helps build immunity. Sound sleep comes my way after drin king a tall glass of milk with unswee tened cocoa powder. I have recom mended this sleep remedy to my kids who are now grown men.
I have recommended this sleep remedy to my kids who are now grown men. My kids follow my footsteps with re gard to this piece of advice – as soon as you wake up drink a warm glass of water
with some lime or lemon juice in it. If you can tolerate more water in your system, have two more similar drinks. That’s a cleanse. Onions are great remedies for many ailments. A few raw onion slices with a squirt of lime or lemon does wonders for the throat. When we had fever and chills, my mother would smash raw onions and rub it all over our bodies. We hated that because of the stink but had no choice but to tolerate it and sleep with onion juice rubbed on us. Another remedy for a wound that is bleeding that my mom used was raw cane sugar.
When we had a wound that bled, in addition to a tourniquet (tying a piece of cloth below the wound to stop the blood flow), she saturated the wound with raw cane sugar and held it tightly and that caused the bleeding to stop.
The staples in my daily kitchen are cayenne (red chilies), turmeric, mustard seeds, coriander, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, onions, ginger and garlic. I also use poppy seeds, Bishop’s weed (ajwain), fenu greek, bay leaves, star anise, mace, as afetida, nutmeg, nigella
seeds, fennel seeds, tamarind, and kokum. You just need a spice or two to change the tex ture and taste of a dish. I hope you will experiment with spices through the re cipes on this blog and our new book has been released. Most spices are natural immunity builders.
Natural honey works wonders. It brought a bee back to life in my home. A bee had entered my kit chen and was lying limp on the floor. I put a teaspoon of natural honey in a small bowl and put the lifeless bee in it. The bowl was left out in the porch as it was summer time. The next morning the bee started moving and in front of my eyes got up and buzzed away. My yard got pollinated very well that summer and the bee buzzed around me whenever it saw me. Go figure. I have included at least one teas poon of honey in my daily food intake.

From Our Hearts To Yours
By: Long Island Jewish-Forest Hills Michael Goyfman MD, MPH, Chief of Car diology Susana Izrailova NP, Director of Cardiac Ser vices Victoria Stellas, RDN, Manager of Nutrition & DieteticsA person’s risk of atherosclerotic cardio vascular disease (ASCVD) refers to the risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Many factors play a role in a person’s risk for stroke or heart attack, including age, gender, smoking history, having high blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. You can even calculate your own risk by visi ting https://tools.acc.org/ascvdrisk-es timator-plus/#!/calculate/ estimate/. As Benjamin Franklin said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and prevention is a key tool when it comes to ASCVD. There are so many ways to redu ce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve cardiovascular health. Engaging in regular physical activity, practicing me ditation regularly and following a healthy diet are important steps toward good heart health.
Regular exercise strengthens the heart muscle, improves circulation, keeps your weight under control, reduces stress and protects arteries from damage from high cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure that can lead to strokes and heart attacks. Getting any amount of exercise is better than none. However, it is recommended to at least do 30-minutes of brisk
walking five days of the week and progressively increasing physical activity as tolerated. Individuals should personalize their exercise routine to their health status, their fitness level and preference level. It is crucial to consult with a heal thcare professional before a starting any exercise program especially for those who have existing health conditions.
Mindfulness can improve heart function, lower high blood pressure, and change how one copes with stress. Finding a practice that works best for you whether it is just being still with eyes closed while sitting or focusing on mental images. Or taking a few deep breaths and controlling the way you breathe can make a dramatic difference in reducing the risks of heart disease.
When planning meals, try to make heart healthy choices, like eating the Mediterra nean diet.
The Mediterranean diet is known for its emphasis on being minimally processed and plant based. This style of eating incorporates healthy fats, lean protein sources, and fiber. High intake of fiber. This includes having low glycemic fruits (including apples and berries), vegetables, whole grains,
and le gumes several times a day
- Incorporating a moderate intake of heal thy fats such as fish, nuts, seeds, and extra virgin olive oil several times a week.
- Lower consumption of red meats. - Very limited amounts of processed foods or added sugars.
The Mediterranean model of living is also important for health. Besides a diet that is minimally processed, and plant based, the Mediterra nean lifestyle habits include exercise and an eating style that involves social connection.

Introducing New Banking & Law Committee Co-Chair
By: Edwin WongContinued from Page 6
In the recent fiscal year, we served 29 schools in Queens. With 180-200 students per school, that’s a total of 5,600 students. These included elementary schools, middle schools and East West School of International Studies, a high school. We are grateful to city council members Joann Ariola, Tiffany Cabán, James F. Gennaro, Shekar Krish nan, Linda Lee and Vicki Paladino for always supporting us. So what do we do, and why is it good for the kids of Queens? First, we engage them with art and artistry and culture, which surely expands young minds.
But we provide more than entertain ment -- we alert striving kids that the re are many career
Edwin Wong, Vice President, Business Banker, Flushing Bank, was welcomed as Co-Chair alongside existing Chair, John Renda, Edward Jones, at the January 24, 2024, Banking & Law Committee panel, “Trade Secrets: Mastering Business Buy/Sell Dynamics with Queens Chamber Experts”. Edwin has been in the banking industry for 20+ years. With Citibank Commercial Bank, HSBC Commercial Bank, Bank of China and East West Bank.
What he enjoys about the Chamber are the various networking opportunities across various industries. “I get to meet family-owned busines ses and business brokers. Architects,
accountants and attorneys to insurance agents and title companies. As well as fellow bankers.” “The Chamber provides an opportunity to introduce member bu sinesses with Flushing Bank products and services as well as to support and refer fellow members to other members to support their businesses.”
As Co-Chair of the Banking and Law committee, he wants to complement the existing efforts of organizing panel and networking events and bring in more attorney and law firm members and continue to build awareness of the Flushing Bank brand, products and services
amongst members. The success of the chamber and benefits to its members depends on the in volvement of its members .
I am just doing my part. Bo rrowing from the Presidential inaugural address of the late John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your Chamber can do for you – ask what you can do for your Chamber”

opportunities on Broadway, even if you can’t sing and dance.
We have three basic approaches. We come to schools with teaching ar tists, who work with kids who get on stage.
We have tours that bring mini-musi cals to schools. Six theater professio nals travel from Manhattan to Queens and back again in a van. This year’s was a 45-minute show featuring the songs of Irving Berlin, all strung toge ther in a compact, compelling narrative, “Land that I love.”
This features several of Berlin’s fabled compositions, including “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” and “God Bless America.” And what a great choice for a community like Queens with so many immigrant families; Berlin
came from Russia when he was 10, and set out to make good. Boy did he. And he was forever grateful.
Finally, we have “Creating the Magic” in which we bring students to Broad way theaters to show them all the jobs they can do behind the scenes that are just as important as those in front of the audience. Stage hands, stage managers, lighting directors, customers – they all play a vital role. And, ge nerally speaking, they can be steadier career paths than acting.
So you see? The links between Broadway and Queens are stron ger than you might think, and we at “Inside Broadway” are doing everything to make them stronger.
