A Top Private High School is a Crucial Family Investment Its that time of year for high school open houses in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. They are happening over the next few weeks, so clear your schedules to visit your top schools. You will not be disappointed at the warm feeling of friendship, mentorship and passion you will witness when taking a tour and talking to teachers and current students. Even if your child is lucky

after-school programs. We found the standards and organization in these schools to be significantly better than those in nearly any public high school we’ve seen. Take a look at any school’s websites, and you will see that there might be as many as eight sports teams in action on a given day, and there seems to be something for the student body to do every weekend. From Buddy Days to walk-athons, from the first week of school there are ample activities for students. For example, St. Edmunds in Brooklyn hosted a College Fair this week. Some schools are incorporation niche programs that are consistent with their neighborhood’s brand. In Astoria, which is rife with television, theatre and music, St. John’s Prep offers a Black Box Theatre program. Simona Rodano, who runs the theatre arts program, bragged to us just last week about students she was proud to have worked with to get into FIT in Manhattan. There is no shortage of high school teachers and program coordinators at these schools who passionately work to help get their students involved with activities, and then help them get to their college of choice. The culture of these private schools makes the student interested enough to get involved in activities inside and outside the classroom. Year after year over the past decade, we find that more schools are offering amazing inschool courses and after-school activities geared toward the arts and sciences. Archbishop Molloy in Briarwood offers a video broadcast club. Last year we noted that Msgr. McClancy in East Elmhurst began offering music and performing arts scholarships, and this year Bishop Kearney in Brooklyn has been focusing on its state-of-theart STEAM wing, which includes a Virtual Reality Center. In Manhattan, Girls Who Code and Mock Trial continue to be top activities at Dominican Academy for Girls. St. Edmunds Prep in the heart of Sheepshead Bay has a location that affords them to offer Crew as an activity. They also offer Robotics and a Savings & Invest-

In fact, one Queens public high school was recently caught discriminating against certain students by not allowing some into the schools admission lottery. We are seeing a trend in a higher number of high-schoolers transferring from public schools to the schools we profile here in our annual issue. A parent of a senior student enrolling in Martin Luther School told us she couldn’t wait to move her son out of one Elmhurst public high school last year. In this special section of our century-old community newspaper group, we suggest you think about a better, more personalized education at one of the these private high schools based on the extensive information we’ve compiled over a decade of coverage, questioning and investigation. Learn from this guide and explore what these high schools have to offer in terms of helping their students get into top colleges across the nation. Advanced placement classes, after-school clubs and truly organized athletics are just part of the equation. Mentoring, college coordinators and peerto-peer counselors are part of the life of every student. We use the phrase “truly organized” because we have witnessed countless team practices in sports, club meetings, study groups and
ment Club, as well. St. Jean Baptiste in Manhattan offers a three-year program called Civic Spirit, which includes professional development on civic education and American political tradition. We have found that there is no shortage of thinking “outside of the box” at these schools.
How We Chose The Top Schools We sent questionnaires to dozens of private high schools in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan for our 2018 issue, just in time for October open houses. In order to make the cut, we need to see at least 90 percent of the student body going to college, answer 90 percent of our probing questions, and have a full roster of extracurricular activities. We speak to parents, students, alumni, teachers and administrators. We are able to obtain interesting information that might not typically be shared with the outside world. The questions we ask are intended to compare the academic, spiritual and social environment of each school. We found that each school has its strengths, challenges and distinct culture. Schools are not shy about sharing scholarship opportunities for eighth graders (see our story about scholarships), as well as money their seniors were offered in scholarships to colleges. However, some schools wouldn’t share enough information for us to make a determination
your child a shot at making it out of there in one piece. They have been getting good marks from parents, but they don’t give us credible information so we can not include them on this list. From where we sit, we have determined that it’s hit or miss with these schools. There is very little consistency with knowing outcome. Among our top schools, a large percentage of students who score in the middle of the class academically tend to get accepted and receive scholarship money for a college of choice. Last year, top graduates from Xavier in Manhattan attended West Point, Annapolis, Yale, Cornell, UPenn Notre Dame, Carnegie Melon and Fordham. That’s a graduating list any school would be quite proud of. The real trend in education is that high-achieving eighth-graders who might have attended a specialized city high school in the past are now opting for a top private high school while receiving some kind of academic scholarship. The reason is obvious when you see what these private schools are doing to compete for the top-notch students. They each have their own way motivating their students for four years, but they have a few things in common we should point out. They work hard at getting all their students into top colleges, and they treat every student like they are important. St. John’s Prep, a co-ed school with 800 students in Astoria, has a Baccalaureate Program in partnership with St. John’s University on the STJ campus.

Take a Further Step If price is keeping you from thinking about one of these schools, rest assured these schools typically want your child if your child wants them. Contacting the financial aid department at one of the schools does not send up a red flag about you child. In fact, it helps. These schools love kids who show a passion for their school, and they will make an effort to figure out how to get you financial aid. You will have to pay something (showing your family tax return is typical), but if your student is well behaved, shows that he or she is willing to work and has some talent that can add to the school community, they will get you in. “If you feel your child is a good fit for us we want to talk to you,” said Nick Melito, director of Admissions at Msgr. McClancy. This is quite typical among leaders of the schools we profile in this edition. Melito graduated from McClancy, and as well as being a top-notch varsity baseball coach in the city, represents everything about McClancy’s rich culture and tradition. Someone who lives deep
Talk to a student who goes there now. He or she might give you some insight into the experience you might want your child to have. next level. In the case of Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica, students in a PreMed track take part in a summer internship at area hospitals, including Lenox Hill and New York Presbyterian. Most of the schools on this list have dynamic programs like this, and in most cases, graduates from these high schools have a real legup because they are entering college with a semester or more of college credit, bringing the cost of college down considerably. Call a school on our list and ask about college interaction programs. Ask to talk to one of the seniors involved. Another common theme is that they provide moral and spiritual compass. Faith is an important part of the fabric or these top schools, and faculty are encouraged to think and work outside traditional educational curriculum. A growing trend is offering professional disciplines. At Bishop Kearney, an all-girls school with 400 students in Brooklyn, has offers WBKS, a working television studio. St. Agnes in College Point has most of its girls competing on a sports team. We have that fact quite high on our criteria in grading a high school. We have found girls who play on sports teams are more likely to have a confident ap-

After exploring the options in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan in this special issue, attend the open houses during the next few weeks and talk to an admissions director. If they find your child is likely to succeed, you might qualify for scholarships or aid. Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and Xavier in Manhattan spotlight their summer programs. Seventh graders who want that high school experience can apply for an enrichment program where the more passionate teachers and student leaders meet for a month in July. They run a leadership program for interested students four days a week. The enrichment program is a proven pipeline to the school. Applicants are encouraged to apply in February. and they need a recommendation from the grade school principal.
Technology, Scholarships, College Credit Courses & Internships The schools we cover in this issue have invested heavily in technology in their classrooms and libraries. Over the last ten years, they have been much more willing
to experiment with savvy tech options to stay ahead of the curve. They all offer state-of-the-art computers, libraries, smartboards and websites to assign and submit homework. St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset has always maintained an exceptional digital university electives program, which helps their students learn the newest study skills and use technology over a broad range of disciplines. The list of college credit courses at St. Mary’s is one of the most robust we have seen, and their attention to having their students remaining digitally relevant in higher order learning skills is exceptional. Almost all of the schools in this issue offer college credit courses, which helps with some college expenses. Nearly every student at Dominican Academy for girls in Manhattan takes at least one college-credit course, and almost twothirds enroll in an honors course. Dominican Academy went through an extensive renovation project over the past two summers. While adding a few classrooms in their 68th Street townhouse, they added to the size of the cafeteria, made the school more wi-fi friendly and added a performing arts space. St. Francis Prep offers 30 or CONTINUED ON PAGE S20
WBKS, Bishop Kearney's student-run television station launched during the 1993- 1994 school year, has made Bishop Kearney a leading school for teaching communication, broadcast journalism, media, and marketing. Either as anchors, technical directors, audio, or floor managers, each student works collaboratively to present a high quality news show. The students have been able to visit Fox studios and see Good Day New York first hand and meet Rosanna Scotto, Greg Kelly, and their special guests Bernadette Peters and Omi.

TOP HIGH SCHOOLS 2018
Scholarships to one of our Top High Schools is achievable
Here’s what you need to know about your school choice Research into the scholarships available at our Top High Schools reveals that scholarship money varies little from year to year. But while the type of student a school tends to attract doesn’t typically change, they do alter their approach to offering money. If parents stay informed, they might just catch a school at the right time for their child. The best advice we received from admissions directors was for parents to “simply ask.” The bottom line is if your child likes the atmosphere and the academic culture at a school, be aggressive in asking for money. Msgr. McClancy continues a relatively new initiative of giving scholarships for music and performing arts, which are based on auditions. This award is indicative of how McClancy is looking to attract a diverse and talented group of students, according to director of Admissions Nick Melito. Xaverian in Bay Ridge offers music-based scholarships as well. Scholarships are different than financial aid. Most of the information below is gathered to help parents determine how to apply for academic-based scholarships, although many of these schools also offer need-based financial aid. Contact the school early for your best shot. For college admission, students send out dozens of applications and colleges send back a letter stating acceptance and scholarships and financial aid that is available. For a student applying to a Top High School, a choice of schools in order of preference must be included on the TACHS exam. This numbered preference is very important to the schools. Top High Schools generally don’t offer scholarships to a student who puts their school as third choice, but there are exceptions, as indicated below. A few schools give their own scholarship tests for eighth graders, and if your child scores high enough you will be offered all kinds of financial incentives to attend. For colleges, if a qualified student desperately wants to attend a particular school, there are usually ways to squeeze money from the institution. Fortunately, the
schools we profiled in this issue feel the same way. Additionally, if a family member attended the same school, you are more likely to get a scholarship dollars. In all cases check a school’s website for the most up-to-date information, but here’s a quick rundown. The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates says first choice is imperative. There is a scholarship, titled CSJ, with the application typically due by mid-December. St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point offers a competitive scholarship exam, and full and partial scholarships are based on that test and the TACHS. A sibling scholarship is also available. Archbishop Molloy awards scholarships based on marks in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. They also offer scholarships named for alumni who are or have been heavily involved in the culture of the school, including the Columbus Citizens Foundation scholarship. Holy Cross in Flushing relies on recommendations and TACHS scores, as well as prior academic success. If you rank Msgr. McClancy as your top choice on your TACHS, you are automatically eligible for a scholarship. Based on TACHS and report cards, full, half and partial scholarships are given. The second child from the same family at the school gets half off tuition while they are both at school. There is also a Brother Vincent Cincotta Scholarship, and the Music and Performing Arts Scholarships require a good TACHS score, first choice, and an auditions for choral and band. So if a child is musically inclined, they may get a couple of thousands of dollars a year. Xaverian in Brooklyn awards more than $1 million in scholarships yearly. An exam is given, typically early in December. The school also offers music scholarships. Call the music director at (718) 836-7100 ext. 177 for more information. They also offer scholarships to the sons of daughters of FDNY and NYPD members, as well as active military. St. Jean Baptiste offers scholarships to talented and gifted students
Graduates at St. Jean Baptiste's 2018 Commencement exercises.
based on TACHS scores and report cards. From Girls Who Code program to cooking to its Global Concern Club, this school continues to be a good choice for young ladies throughout the five boroughs. Martin Luther School in Maspeth offers scholarships based on scores from an exam in November. Typically, the top 20 scorers will be offered scholarships. Dominican Academy for girls is located in a townhouse on East 68th Street in Manhattan. Students who score well on the TACHS and indicate keen interest in the school will be considered for scholarships. According to admissions director Madeleine Metzler, about onethird of students receive some sort of assistance. They will be hosting two open houses in October. Reserve a spot or get there early. Bishop Kearney offers a scholarship exam in December. Over $300,000 is offered each year. Notre Dame in Greenwich Village uses TACHS or COOP-HBST scores, as well as grade school marks, for its scholarships. Students who put Notre Dame first or second get preference over thirdchoice selections. St. John’s Prep in Astoria awards numerous academic scholarships, most of which come from the school’s Board of Directors. A small fee is charged for the test, which is named after Peter Vallone. Check their website for test-
ing dates. The top 30 scorers receive scholarship offers. Only students who have an overall average of 85 or above are encouraged to take the exam. St. Edmunds in Brooklyn offers a number of scholarships for students who list the school as first or second choice. Grades must be 90 percent or higher for math, science, language and social studies in 7th and 8th grades. St. Vincent Ferrer typically gives scholarships based on TACHS scores and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade marks. TACHS scores must be 90 or better to qualify. They offer a legacy scholarship for students who have had family members attend the school. At Xavier High School, if your son is an “A” student he should register for the scholarship exam given in November. Xavier also hosts a summer program called Higher Achievement for boys during the summer between 7th and 8th grades. If interested, get a letter of reference from your grade-school principal by January of the school year. Boys who attend the summer program have a better chance of achieving an academic scholarship. St. Mary’s in Manhasset offers full and half-tuition scholarships to incoming freshmen based on high school entrance exams.

Experts share how to prep for the open house By Benjamin Fang
bfang@queensledger.com
When considering which high school is the best fit for a student, it’s important to attend open houses early to narrow your choices. Parents are often encouraged to do their own research on schools, whether it’s reading brochures or perusing a website for information. But there is no substitute for going to the actual institution and interacting with the school community, according to Madeleine Metzler, director of admissions and marketing strategy at Dominican Academy. A school can look “absolutely perfect on paper” and appear to be the right fit, she said. But by attending an open house, students can find out whether the school environment is what they’re looking for. “It’s your experience visiting, talking to current students and teachers. It’s about if you can picture yourself there,” Metzler said. “You can’t get that even from meticulous research.” Metzler said by visiting a lot of different places, students and parents can eliminate what they don’t like, and shorten their list of possibilities. While at these open houses, prospective students should talk to current students and teachers. “You can learn a lot from the way students carry themselves,” Metzler said. “Do they look engaged and happy to be there, or are they checked out and not interested?” Sister Christine Cosgrove from Saint Vincent Ferrer High School said open houses also present a chance for parents to observe the administration. Cosgrove said parents should determine if it’s a safe school, and what kind of track record the school has. For Kathleen Gaughan, assistant principal at St. Agnes Academic High School, parents should ask what academic programs the school offers, what honors and advanced placement courses they have, and what kind of sports programs they provide. “When it comes to Catholic schools, ask about the school’s Catholic identity,” Gaughan said, “what their mission is.” These visits also give students a sense of what the schools are
looking for, which is different for each institution. Bradley Walters, admissions director for The KewForest School, said his institution, an independent school, looks for hardworking and committed students who are preparing for the college process. Sister Christine said Saint Vincent Ferrer likes to strike a balance between academic achievement and social growth among its students. “We want them to be comfortable with us and feel at home here,” she said. “In a comfortable atmosphere to take some risks academically.” Gaughan echoed that sentiment. She said St. Agnes is looking for an “overall picture of a student open to growth.” “We look for a student that is reaching their potential in an environment suited to their success,” she said. Many parents look for a high school that can prepare their student for college. All of the admissions experts agreed that parents should ask each school about their graduation rate, college acceptance rate and scholarship and grant opportunities. Gaughan said another important question is about the role of the guidance department to help walk students through the college process. Metzler recommended asking not just how many students got into college or the best colleges they were accepted to, but the “most represented” college accep-
tances. Most schools offer a “Buddy Day,” in which prospective students can shadow current students in their classes. “It gives them an opportunity to ask students real questions and have a real experience,” Gaughan said. Whereas the open house is crowded, stressful and only shows the best of a school, a Buddy Day can offer a more authentic experience. “That’s a fantastic way to see what a normal day is like,” Metzler said. “If a student is still on the fence, they should definitely consider a Buddy Day.” Walters said The Kew-Forest School only offers a shadow day for admitted students, so they have a second chance to visit the campus. Cosgrove, meanwhile, said Saint Vincent Ferrer only recently started hosting Buddy Days to keep up with the expectations from parents. However, their Buddy Day is shortened. Interested students sit in for just three to four classes. “The thing about Buddy Day is it’s really academic,” she said. “It can get kind of boring.” But Cosgrove also noted how students can see their schools in a different way than at an open house. “It’s like having your cousins and relatives over for Christmas, and then having them over a week later,” she said. As the open houses for each school draw near, Cosgrove said
students should start attending as early as the 7th grade, so they can get their choices down to five schools. “So when 8th grade comes, you can look at your top three,” she said. Gaughan said students and parents should attend as many as they can. She also urges to keep an open mind. “A lot of times, students tend to go where all their friends are going,” she said. “But it’s important to attend the open houses and ask as many questions as you can.” “Don’t just be passive and take in the information,” Walters added. “Talk to current students, parents and faculty to get a deeper understanding and to advocate for yourself.” Metzler said it’s important for students to give themselves options, but they shouldn’t spread themselves too thin. Do the research and narrow down the options, she suggested, but don’t exhaust yourself in the process. While the challenge of choosing a school can be difficult for parents, Metzler said they should listen to their child and don’t force them into a path. “You, as the parent, know them, and can provide valuable insight to them,” she said. “It’s a conversation between parent and child on where they will be most successful.” (Meghan Sackman contributed reporting to this article.)

TOP HIGH SCHOOLS 2018 Prep as their number one choice. Saint Francis Prep admits students without regard to race, color, and/or country of national origin. School Motto: Deus Meus et Omnia: My God and My All What makes St. Francis Prep a Top High School? St. Francis Prep is a Catholic, college preparatory school in the Franciscan tradition. Our mission is to enable all students to develop and broaden their spiritual, intellectual, creative, emotional, social, and physical attributes. We value the unique contribution each person makes to the Prep community. Together we create an environment filled with academic success, respect, integrity, and joy. St. Francis Prep offers a traditional, college preparatory curriculum with the opportunity for students to pursue their areas of interest on a sophisticated level. This balance makes our program unique. Students may choose electives from all academic subjects, including Art, Business, Computer Science, and Music. In addition, our Franciscan tradition emphasizes what we call the Four Golden Links: the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social. This emphasis provides students with a balanced and well-rounded education that prepares them well for success in college and beyond and for continued life-long learning. more college credit courses in subjects ranging from art and language to math. Trips abroad are also part of many language curriculum options. Xavier High School has a number of trips every summer, from building homes in South America to simply helping communities in need in this country. W h i l e we find that most private high schools in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan are attracting students from nearby, they are a choice for more and more students who commute an hour and sometimes more. Queens-based McClancy says they have always attracted students from Greenpoint, while Breezy Point always seems to have a number of teens who travel to Xavier in Manhattan. you one-on-one. Ask to speak to the principal or admissions director during the open house. Introduce your child to him or her. Don’t be afraid to tell them about your child. Talk about what type of student they are and their outside interests. They actually want to talk to you and they will be honest with you. Understanding that they want
TIP #4
If you have your heart set on a school put it first on your choice selection.
What To Look For at The Open House October is the month most schools want you there, although some offer second chances. It is imperative that you attend the open house with your child. Ask questions of the people taking you on the tours. Most schools have had a student or two attend a top-ranked college. Find out where a student who was in the middle of the class academically went to college last year. Do most of the graduates go to CUNY, SUNY or do they aspire to go to tier-one colleges? U.S. News and World Report magazine publishes a guide to U.S. colleges this month. Look it up online. Don’t be shy about asking questions. Your child will spend the next four years there, so speak to a current student you don’t know. Is he or she the type of kid you think you want your child to become? Ask where they score in relation to their classmates. Are his or her marks in the middle of the class or are they above average? A teenager will be honest if they are talking to
a student who will be a good fit for the school is quite important. If the student leaves after a year, it doesn’t make sense for either the school or the student.
Sports & Schools Some schools concentrate on their athletics because it is a way of
promoting their school. Although few administrators will freely admit the positive press from a few good teams goes a long way in recruiting students, it’s true. Many students are looking forward to practice or the game after class, or they say intramural sports program gets them through the academic day. Not everyone will make the team of their choice, but these schools do a great job in making sports an integral part of the school spirit. If your child is an athlete, seek out the freshman coach at the open house. Coaches will be honest about your child’s chances of making the team. Although recruiting kids is generally frowned upon, it always seems that basketball and baseball coaches of high school teams will know four or five kids coming into their freshman program, and as many as 30 or 40 students will attend basketball and baseball tryouts at the larger schools. If your child is not one of the select few for the highly popular
basketball team, many opt for the track & field or swim team. Some parents feel their child might actually be better off on the soccer team in the long run. After the TACHS, contact the school admissions director and try to get your child enrolled, even if they have not accepted him or her. We know of many instances where this was done, and the student had a great high school experience and graduated to go on to the right college. Be as honest with yourself and your child as possible. There is no doubt that the extra attention and quality education your child receives at our Top High Schools is worth the cost and effort. Many children mature during their teen years, so don’t stifle their academic potential before they get a chance to grow up.

Top High Schools embrace tech in classrooms By jen khedaroo
jkhedaroog@queensledger.com
To better prepare their students for success in college and in their careers, some top high schools are implementing cutting-edge technology into the classroom. At Saint Mary’s High School in Manhasset, each student is given an iPad or Chromebook to use throughout their high school career. Students have the choice to use traditional textbooks or have the textbooks loaded onto the device. “Some of the students like to have a textbook in their hand, but a lot of the instruction is done by iPads in the classrooms,” Saint Mary’s Director of Communications Eileen Symmons said. “It’s just really, really cool. The students are learning about history across the world through their iPads and they are conducting scientific research and experiments through their devices. “It’s really incredible at how the classroom has gone into a digital path,” Symmons added. The school has found that the use of technology has encouraged a more interactive learning experience. As the teacher works through the lesson plan, students are able to pull up additional information from various platforms that allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the material. School officials have noticed an uptick in test scores, study skills and better success getting into some of the top colleges. “The students are so much more engaged,” Symmons said. “This technology that is beneficial to them because it’s giving them opportunities that they haven’t had before.” In addition to the devices, Saint Mary’s provides college level computer courses such as AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles. The AP Computer Science A class helps students to understand core aspects of computer science in order to create solutions that are understandable, adaptable and reusable. The AP Computer Science Principles course offers a multidisciplinary approach to teaching the underlying principles of computation. The course introduces students to the creative aspects of programming, abstractions, algo-
rithms, large data sets, the Internet, cybersecurity concerns and computing impacts. The program was spearheaded by the school’s principal, Jonathan Kramer, who often teaches the technology courses himself. “I love to experience the joy of watching a student fall in love with coding and realizing that it could be a career choice,” Kramer said. As a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Kramer said he enjoys passing along his knowledge in the classroom while keeping the entire campus up to date in the school’s state-of-the-art wireless network and systems. “Technology is opening up a whole world for the students and I really think that it has been helpful for their education,” Symmons said. “It’s given them something that other kids don’t have the advantage of having.” Using technology and high-tech software, St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point offers a new approach to teaching anatomy and physiology within its medical simulation lab. The school’s medical program is a collaboration with Northwell Health. At the end of freshman year, students have the opportunity to apply for the medical program and those who participate in the entire program can graduate as a certified nurse’s assistant.
In terms of technology in the lab, teachers and students rely on the Smartboard and videos provided by Northwell to lead lessons. Students also use their computer skills to perform tasks such as recording vital signs. “Technology in the lab is growing everyday,” said St. Agnes Principal Susan Nicoletti. “It’s very interactive.” As an elective, St. Agnes offers a Girls Who Code course where students learn coding from experts in the field. Currently there are 15 participants and St. Agnes is also starting up a Girls Who Code club. With the school’s Dream Big program, they work with Molloy College to bring some students to Molloy’s campus to gain experiences working with an advanced
TV studio and filmmaking. Last year’s valedictorian graduated St. Agnes and attended Molloy, where she felt comfortable due to all of her experiences working at the Molloy studio and using the specialized equipment. The student earned enough college credits at St. Agnes to start Molloy as a sophomore. When students come in as freshmen, they are given Chromebooks and classes are taught through Google Classroom. Each classroom has a Smartboard. “With Google Classroom, parents can see what’s going on in class,” she said. “And teachers can see what the students are looking at on their Chromebooks so students can’t get away with picking out a prom dress on the internet.”
