“Sprint” - Season 1
Make your way to the starting line and get excited for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games with the new documentary series “Sprint,” premiering Tuesday, July 2, on Netflix. From executive producers Paul Martin, James Gay-Rees and Warren Smith from Box to Box Films, the team behind hit series including “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Break Point,” “Sprint” follows some of the fastest athletes from all over the world. Digging deep into the psychology of the sport and the minds and motivations of the athletes, all of whom are constantly working hard to be the fastest person on the planet, the series takes “an exclusive behind-thescenes look at the high stakes and mental toughness of the sprinters who devote their entire lives to crossing the finish line in record time, where their professional futures are decided in just fractions of a second” (per Netflix). Following top sprinters as they travel around the world and through the 2023 world championships, the series features athletes including Sha’Carri Richardson (U.S.), Noah Lyles (U.S.) and Shericka Jackson (Jamaica), among many others from the U.S., Jamaica, the U.K., Ivory Coast, Kenya and Italy. Produced in association with the Olympic Channel, “Sprint” is directed by Phil Turner (“SAS: Who Dares Wins”).
“The Imaginary” (2024)
Enter a world of make-believe and wonder with Japanese animation studio Studio Ponoc’s animated feature film “The Imaginary” when it premieres Friday, July 5, on Netflix. Based on the beloved and award-winning novel of the same name by A.F. Harrold and illustrated by Emily Gravett, the movie follows Amanda (voiced in the English version by Evie Kiszel, “The Magician’s Garden,” 2021), a young girl with a wealth of creativity, who dreams up Rudger (Louie Rudge-Buchanan, “Crosshairs,” 2022), an imaginary boy only she can see. Together, the pair explore the world on all kinds of thrilling and grand adventures. But when Rudger suddenly finds himself alone and in The Town of Imaginaries, a place where forgotten Imaginaries go to live and work, he soon finds himself facing a mysterious threat. The film’s English version features a voice cast that also includes Hayley Atwell (“Agent Carter”), Sky Katz (“Raven’s Home”), Kal Penn (“Designated Survivor”), LeVar Burton (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and Ruby Barnhill (“The BFG,” 2016).
“Space Cadet” (2024)
Blast off on an all-new adventure when Prime Video’s newest comedy film, “Space Cadet,” premieres on the streamer Thursday, July 4. Florida party girl Tiffany “Rex” Simpson (Emma Roberts, “American Horror Story”) lives a fun and carefree life, but she’s always dreamed of going to space. With her life not going according to plan and determined to turn things around for herself, Rex, with the help of her best friend, Nadine (Poppy Liu, “Hacks”), submits an embellished application to NASA’s ultra-competitive astronaut training program. Using her quick wits to get through the program — and hopefully to the top of her class — Rex will have to get through her training and blast off before she can be caught as a fraud. Written and directed by Liz W. Garcia (“Memphis Beat”), “Space Cadet” also stars Tom Hopper (“Black Sails”), Gabrielle Union (“Truth Be Told”), Kuhoo Verma (“Plan B,” 2021), Desi Lydic (“Awkward.”), Sebastian Yatra (“Once Upon a Time... Happily Never After”), Yasha Jackson (“The Flight Attendant”), Andrew Call (“Z: The Beginning of Everything”), Troy Iwata (“WeCrashed”), Josephine Huang (“Ramy”), Dave Foley (“The Kids in the Hall”), Sam Robards (“Twisted”) and Joshua Harto (“The Dark Knight,” 2008).
“Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977) Experience what many consider one of the greatest science fiction films of all-time in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” available to stream now on Prime Video. This classic, written and directed by Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List,” 1993), along with writing credits for Hal Barwood (“Warning Sign,” 1985), Jerry Belson (“The Tracey Ullman Show”), John Hill (“Quantum Leap”) and Matthew Robbins (“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” 2022), stars Richard Dreyfuss (“Jaws,” 1975) as Roy Neary, an electrician from Indiana. After having a chance encounter with a UFO on night, Roy becomes obsessed with aliens to the dismay of friends and family. Eventually, Roy decides to take a crosscountry trip to find the answers he seeks. Apart from Dreyfuss, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” also stars Francois Truffaut (“Day for Night,” 1973), Teri Garr (“Young Frankenstein,” 1974), Melinda Dillon (“A Christmas Story,” 1983), Bob Balaban (“Capote,” 2005), J. Patrick McNamara (“Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” 1989), Warren Kemmerling (“Family Plot,” 1976), Roberts Blossom (“Home Alone,” 1990), and Lance Henriksen (“Aliens,” 1986).
“Shark Beach With Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast”
Swim safe this summer: National Geographic’s 2024 Sharkfest kicks off Monday, July 1, on Disney+, with features also available on Hulu, after airing on the linear National Geographic channel the day before. Kicking off Sharkfest this year is “Shark Beach With Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast,” which follows actor Anthony Mackie (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) as he navigates the waterways of New Orleans, where he was born and raised. As Mackie “explores the growing rumors that shark encounters may be on the rise in the Gulf of Mexico” (per ABC), he works with a team of experts, consulting the latest in scientific research, to find better ways for humans and sharks to coexist in the waters surrounding Louisiana. Following up on July 1 is “Shark vs. Ross Edgley,” which follows “ultraathlete swimmer, world record holder and shark advocate Ross Edgley ... [as he attempts] to pit his mind and body against four of the most formidable sharks in the ocean” (ABC). Other Sharkfest features this year include: “Baby Sharks in the City” (July 2), which explores a great white shark nursery off the coast of New York City; “Shark Attack 360” (July 2), which uses forensic evidence to look into why sharks attack; “Attack of the Red Sea Sharks” (July 7), which takes a deeper look at a series of deadly attacks in Egypt; and many more.
