welcome from the

Home Show Chair

Hello everyone, my name is Jim falconer, and I am with Radco Truck Accessory Center/Accessory Pro Warehouse. As this years chairperson, and on be half of our very hardworking committee members, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Mid Minnesota Builders Home Show / Lakes Area Home Tour. It is hard to believe that it is this time of year again, but once again I think we have put together a show that all attendees will be glad they took the time to participate in. We will have exhibitors for everything from, home building, remodeling, landscape design, to the best way to finance your spring project, and much, much more. We will be having some familiar events, as well as some new things at this years show. One familiar, fun, and successful event for us will be our 5th annual Kids Build, “Big Project for Little Builders”. Saturday the 31st, at 11:00 am, in the upstairs area overlooking the civic center, kids (ages 5-12) will have the opportunity to build a bird feeder with a little help from some of our builder members. Keep in mind the bird feeders are limited to 100, so get there early. There a couple of new things to be aware of this year. Number 1, we have made some changes to our concession set up. Instead of our normal MMBA concession booth, located between the civic center and gold medal arena, we have invited various food

and beverage vendors from around the community to come in and provide you with a much broader variety, for lunch, dinner, or just a snack. These vendors will be located at the east end of the gold medal arena (on the right as you come down the ramp). There will also be a seating area set up near them with several tables and chairs, for your convenience. Number 2, this year is the attendance of Crow Wing County and its land services department. They will be located to your left as you come into the main civic center arena, (where the city of Brainerd usually stations). They are pleased to announce free water testing for nitrates during the show. Just bring a water sample from your tap and staff will be able to conduct the test within seconds while you wait. Samples should be taken after running the tap for several minutes, and before any filtering is done. You are also encouraged to bring your unique well number and approximate depth of the well. There will also be computers with a new interactive GIS mapping website available for landowners to ask questions about their property, as well as 2 land use workshops put on by them. ■ Friday March 30th at 4:00pm.- General land use Permit requirements ■ Saturday March 31st at 1:00 pm – Shoreline Development regulations. ■ Of course do not forget about the Lakes Area Home Tour, April 13th -15th, this year we already have 11 homes to tour as of February 15th !!! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2012 Mid Minnesota builders Home Show, and Lakes Area Home Tour.

New Homes of the Future: Smaller, Greener and More Casual The economic downturn has changed the way Americans look at a lot of things, including what they are looking for in their next home. A study by the National Association of Home Builders suggests that the recession has caused prospective home buyers to shift their perspective on the housing they want and need, and that the new home of the future will focus more on efficiency than indulgence. The survey asked builders, designers, architects, manufacturers, and marketing specialists about what they thought the likely characteristics of the average, new single-family detached home would be in 2015. First, the typical size of new homes will continue to shrink, with respondents saying they expect homes to average 2,152 square feet. That is 10 percent smaller than the average size of single-family homes started in 2010. Census Bureau data shows that the average size peaked in 2007, at 2,521 square feet. This decrease is likely influenced by economic hardship, with consumers focusing on lowering the cost of heating and cooling their homes as well as no longer having a lot of equity in their current homes to finance purchasing a much larger one. An aging population — 29 percent of the U.S. population will be 55 and older in the year 2020 — will also increase demand for smaller homes as empty-nesters downsize into easier-to-manage properties.

features most likely to be in the new home kitchen in 2015. In addition to floor plan changes, it is expected that new homes in 2015 will include more green features and technology, including low-E windows; engineered wood beams, joists or tresses; water-efficient features such as dual-flush toilets or low-flow faucets; and an ENERGY STAR rating for the whole house. Surprisingly, some new home features that have been popular in recent years are expected to lose favor with home buyers in the future. Less than a third of survey respondents said they thought more technology features, more universal features and more outdoor living features would be the first or second most probable trend.

To find out about trends in new homes in the Brainerd Lakes area, contact Mid-Minnesota Builders Association (218) 829-4982

A smaller home means the space must be better suited to modern lifestyles. Fifty-two percent of builders expect the living room to be merged with other spaces in the home by 2015 and 30 percent said it will vanish entirely. Respondents also expect the entry foyer and dining rooms to become smaller, or merge with other spaces. A great room comprised of the kitchen, foyer and living room is the most likely room to be included in the average new home. Some of the rooms least likely to be present include two master bedroom suites, a sunroom, a hobbies room, and a media room. Kitchens are also expected to become more functional. Double sinks, recessed lighting, table space for eating, a breakfast bar and pull-out drawers are the

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

You can save dollars off your monthly energy bill by how you operate your house. ■ Reducing Your Energy Bill Save energy (and dollars) without affecting your comfort or lifestyle. ■ Energy Efficient Appliances When purchasing appliances, choose models that are energy efficient and will save you money in operating costs. ■ Incentive Programs Many utilities offer energy efficiency rebates, incentives and services to their residential customers. ■ Energy Efficient Mortgages Homeowners can obtain increased financing to cover energy-saving measures in their home through Energy Efficient Mortgages (EEMs). Courtesy of www.homeenergyresourcemn.org This website offers suggestions for how you should properly maintain and operate your home. However, you should always refer to your builder warranty, maintenance and homeowner manual documents for the specific operation and maintenance requirements for your individual home and its equipment.

10 Simple Things You Can Do To Save Energy And Change Other Stuff, Too...

Many people are concerned about energy use and its effects on budgets and the environment. Conservation and efficiency are the most effective ways to reduce energy usage. Our cumulative efforts will make for real changes in our energy independence, our fiscal security, and our actions to mitigate global climate changes. ■ Have an Energy Audit Before you do anything else, find out how your house is working, right now.

■ Control Hot Water Use A standard showerhead can use up to 5.5 gallons of water a minute. ■ Replace Light Bulbs A CFL bulb can save $30 over the life of the bulb in energy costs. ■ Use Outlet Switches Standby power or “phantom load” is the electricity that flows through appliances and devices when they are turned “off ”–up to 40% of “on” for some things!

■ Seal Air Leaks Homeownership Can Bring An enormous amount of energy is wasted when inside air (either heated or cooled) ■ Install Timers/Motion Detectors escapes to the outside through leaks in attics, walls, windows, and doors. Why keep things on when you aren’t using them?
