Kid’s Ad Ad Design Design
GRAND PRIZE WINNERS
E
ach year the Brainerd Dispatch and Echo Journal, along with local businesses, visit fourth and fifth grade classrooms to share information about designing a newspaper ad and specific information about the business assigned to their class. The students get busy and create original ads. The ads are brought back to the businesses who select one ad to run in the special Kid’s Ad Design edition. The grand prize winners in each grade are selected by newspaper staff by voting without seeing the students’ names, schools or teachers. Congratulations to these students!

Newspapers in Education Newspapers in Education, or NIE for short, is a FREE practical program to distribute thousands of copies of the Brainerd Dispatch each week to school classrooms throughout the lakes area. Teachers use the newspaper like an up-to-date textbook to teach a variety of subjects. Some early grade levels use the newspaper to highlight words they know or words they want to learn. Classes of third graders use the paper to track the sunrise and sunset and construct word problems for math. Middle School and high school students often use the paper to relate current events to their studies. Teachers who work with special education and struggling readers especially like to offer the newspaper as additional reading material to students.
We have 2 versions of NIE 1. Traditional- A hands on tool to help them with their studies or 2. Digital access- which is called E-NIE has a multitude of knowledge which is award winning. In the day of technology some teachers prefer this method. Within their account they can set it up specifically to their liking. It is a seemingly endless stream of idea that will answer the age old question, “How will I use this information in the real world?” This program is set up to use on any modern devices including iPads, laptops, Macs, tablets or even smart phones. To Learn more about this program please contact Tammy Woitalla, Brainerd Dispatch coordinator for Newspapers in Education 218-855-5838 or tammy.woitalla@brainerddispatch.com
