to the Cuyuna Lakes
The towns and communities of Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood, Cuyuna, Trommald, Emily, Riverton and Bay Lake are glad you’re interested in visiting and we are excited to have you as our guest. While you’re here, remember this outdoor destination has been in the works for generations. Some weekend, when you’ve climbed to the top of Miner’s Mountain, tip your hats to the men and women of steel, who dug the earth, and uncovered the minerals that built the backbone of this great country. Without their toil, sacrifice and sweat, we wouldn’t have this great nation to call home. And, we certainly would not have trails worthy of national acclaim. This is a place for family. A regional hub for healthcare. An excellent school district embracing technology. We’re proud to be a destination for tomorrow’s leaders and future entrepreneurs. There are very few times in life that you have the opportunity to be part of a story this big in a region this small. We’re thankful for it, and we’re excited to bring you our story from the land we love, the land we call the Cuyuna Lakes.

One of Minnesota’s newest parks and still being expanded, the recreation area is over 5,000 acres of forests and lakes. Opportunities abound for biking, hiking, paddling, boating, fishing, diving, camping and bird watching. Access the area from several places in Crosby or Ironton. Check with the DNR for maps and the latest updates on improvements.
Park amenities include a Serpent Lake swimming beach, boat access, campsites, picnic shelters, large playground and a skateboard park. The park is highlighted by Kahnahbeck, a larger-than-life serpent and a WWII tank.

Milford Mine Memorial Park features natural and man-made habitat that was transformed into a recreation area to be enjoyed by area residents and visitors. It is a humble attempt to preserve the memory 41 miners killed on February 5, 1924, in underground tunnels after a nearby lake flooded the mine. Located in Crosby west of Highway 6 and south of County Highway 30, between Island and Milford lakes.

Hiking
Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area boasts 25 miles of forested shoreline providing peaceful relaxation for those who desire a rustic experience. Leave technology behind and embrace the sun dancing on quiet, crystal blue waters, the crackling warmth of a campfire and the haunting call of loons. Sixteen primitive, first-come, first-serve camp sites and unsupervised beach are available at the
Portsmouth Campground off of County Road 30 north of Ironton. For the latest information on park maps, trails and improvements, check www.dnr.state.mn.us and search for Cuyuna Country. Spend a lazy afternoon paddling in a canoe or kayak. Slip over the side in scuba gear and explore the remnants of an iron mine hundreds of feet below the still surface. Plan a day or a week to camp, hike
and fish but leave the motorized off-road vehicles at home as they are not allowed in the park. Get a great overview of the area atop Miner’s Mountain. From Pennington Lake near Ironton, bike, hike or drive up the Outlook Trails’ winding switchbacks to the highest point in the area. There you will have a beautiful vista of numerous lakes and forests.

Whether it’s just a day away from the kids or a weekend family expedition, paddling excursions are always a great beak. The lakes and rivers of the Cuyuna Range offer a wide variety for both the beginner and the experienced kayaker and canoeist. The scenic Mississippi and Pine Rivers offer opportunities to paddle for just a few hours or a few days. The premier paddling experience is on the deep, clear mine lakes of Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. A chain of mine lakes, starting at the Pennington access, provides hours of bliss in pristine, peaceful surroundings. Deer, bald eagles and osprey are often spotted. Loons may surface nearby. Beach areas provide a place to stretch or enjoy a picnic. Maps showing parking, boat and carry-in access points, campsites and scenic views are available at trailheads and the Cuyuna Lakes Chamber office in Ironton. Canoe and kayak rental with shuttle service is available at Cycle Path & Paddle in Crosby.

AREA ATTRACTIONS On The Water
The best kept secret in Minnesota is Cuyuna Country. Our pristine lakes provide excellent fishing for a large variety of species, including trout. 12
Cuyuna Lakes Visitor Guide | 2018
Visit CuyunaLakes.com or call 218-546-8131
Mine Lakes The mine lakes are famous for trout. But, if they are not cooperating, try switching to northern pike. Submerged stands of timber shelter trophy pike, some pushing 30 pounds. The best technique when hooked to a behemoth is to start the motor or grab the oars and pull and snap your line in the underwater forest. The sunken trees also provide cover for hungry small and largemouth bass. Spinner baits are a great choice because the water does not have a lot of weeds and the bait can be worked through the stands of trees and stumps. A pan fish supper awaits if you stay near the underwater trees during low light. Use a cane pole to drop a line to a depth above 30 feet and pull up quickly to keep the fish out of trouble.
Natural Lakes Tired of gonzo fishing amidst jet skiers and power boats? Experience the solitude on our natural lakes where walleye, northern and largemouth bass are the main targets. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon slab crappies or big bluegills. Venture to larger waters for that trophy muskie. Launch your boat at the many public access points or if you are looking for peace and quiet, bring or rent a canoe or kayak and relax on one of the many small lakes with limited access. Grab a map, locate a back road and find your own honey hole on one of our tranquil lakes.

The nearby Mississippi River, with excellent populations of walleye and smallmouth bass, is navigable under normal conditions with a motorized boat but some prefer to float it in a canoe. The stretch from Aitkin to Merrifield is both beautiful and rewarding. Professionally groomed trails feature stunning views of the Mississippi River.

Remain on 210, also called Washington Street. Take a right at the stoplight at Walgreen’s onto 4th Street NW. AREA ATTRACTIONS Snowmobiling/ATV
Miller Black Bear ATV Trail Winter outdoor enthusiasts will find miles of snowmobile trails which connect to miles of trails in northern Minnesota. In additional to the superb snowmobile trail system, some trails double as non-winter ATV trails. The Sno-Serpents Snowmobile Club takes great pride in making sure riders have the best groomed trails in the state. They groom 83 miles of beautiful, scenic Crow Wing County.
Map on Page 21 The Miller Black Bear trail area, part of the Cuyuna Iron Range area, is located between the cities of Trommald and Riverton off Iverson Road. There are 20 miles of trails all on county and state forest land. Step back in time and see part of the mining era with large iron ore tailing hills and the section six mine pit lake. You will travel over 4,000 acres of gentle rolling hills with scenic overlooks of the Mississippi River with picnic sites.

Cuyuna Country is prime territory for bird watching. Members of the local Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club, one of the most active and respected bird clubs in Minnesota, have sighted Glossy Ibis, Sabian Gull, Varied Thrush and Buff Breasted Sandpiper. Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls and resident Barred Owls have also been observed. Careful observers will spot the nests of eagles and osprey, many times near well-traveled trails and roads. The area’s many lakes and wetlands provide important nesting habitat for Common Loons and Wood Ducks. Deciduous woodlands harbor nesting Red Shouldered Hawks, Ruffed Grouse and Barred and Northern Saw Whet Owls. Also in these woodlands are the nests of Whip-poor-wills and Mourning and Golden Winged Warblers. Look for the nest of Pine Warblers in stands of red pine. In winter, Red and White Winged Crossbills may be spotted in the shelter of pine stands while the Bohemian Wax Wings can be found snacking on lingering fruit of mountain ash and crab apple trees. Finches, such as American Goldfinch, Redpoll and Pine Siskin are frequent visitors to area birdfeeders. Harrier Goshawks and other accipiters can also be observed. With thousands of acres of public land, you’ve got a lot of ground to cover. So grab your binoculars, bird books, a comfortable pair of shoes and head for the birds.

Special Interests Memorial Park Preserves Memory of Miners
Accommodations for the Adventurous
Milford Mine was the site of one of the worst mining disasters in U.S. history, when 41 miners were killed on February 5, 1924, in underground tunnels after a nearby lake flooded the mine. It remains Minnesota’s worst mining disaster. The 200foot Milford Mine had multiple levels with one shaft leading to the surface. Only seven men made it to the surface alive. Milford Mine Memorial Park features natural and manmade habitat that was transformed into a recreation area to be enjoyed by area residents and visitors. It is a humble attempt to preserve the memory of those who gave their lives to pursue the American dream and provide for their families. The park is a place of reflection, recreation, and community. Located in Crosby west of Highway 6 and south of County Highway 30, between Island and Milford lakes, the park includes the site of the mine. Visitors can tour a boardwalk bridge across Milford Lake that lists each disaster victim and survivor name as well as mine shafts. Interpretive signage throughout the area features historical photos and facts. The recreation area also includes a restroom facility, canoe launch and fishing platform, two picnic shelters, memorial wall, benches, picnic tables, cooking grills, bicycle rack and several accessible trails. Parking is free and there is no entrance fee.
Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area offers numerous camping and lodging options. Three seven-person yurts, insulated canvas tents with wood floors and woodstoves, are available along the west side of Yawkey Mine Lake. Reservations may be made at http://www. dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/yurts.html or 218-336-2189. A non-refundable fee is charged for each advance reservation but there is no reservation fee to reserve a campsite same-day. A total of 29 shaded and open, grassy camping sites are available at the Portsmouth Campground located on the northwest shore of Portsmouth Mine Lake. There are 18 electric and 15 non-electric sites available during the regular season. Four walk-in sites and a group camp area for up to 25 people are also available in a wooded area within a short distance of restrooms, showers, swimming beach and mountain bike trails. Reservations are required at http://www.dnr.state. mn.us/state_parks/self_service.html.

Drive Along America’s Scenic Byway The Cuyuna Range is along The Great River Road National Scenic Byway that follows the course of the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The Great River Road is a well-marked series of different roads and highways that roughly follow the winding course of the Mississippi River. Travelers will find white signs displaying a green pilot’s wheel logo. The symbol denotes which roads are part of the designated route that was selected for its natural, cultural, historical, recreational and scenic properties. All along the Great River Road, visitors find interesting things to see and do, including a number of river-related attractions and designated interpretive centers. The Cuyuna Range is no exception. Travelers can drive a short portion of the byway to experience some of the numerous amenities the area has to offer. Learn more at http://www.mnmississippiriver.com/.

Relocation Information
The Cuyuna Country region is home to nearly 60,000 year-round residents and thousands more seasonal residents and visitors. Outdoor activities abound in the Cuyuna and Brainerd Lakes area that is nestled among more than 500 pristine lakes, including mountain biking, kayaking, spin and ice fishing, hunting, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing and much more. With Minneapolis and St. Paul about a two-hour drive away, you also have the opportunity to balance culture, shopping and professional sports. Many residents live on the surrounding lakes and have no trouble driving home from work in time to enjoy quality time outdoors. The opportunities in this area are endless for the outdoor enthusiast. To be able to live on a lake and be a short distance from your work place, without the hassle of traffic jams, is truly remarkable. No traffic jams—spend that time fishing, hunting, boating, biking, hiking, golfing, ice fishing, enjoying family, and enjoying sporting, music, and school events.
