WELCOME!

JOIN US IN NISSWA! W e invite you to join us in Nisswa, Minnesota the heart of the lakes area. We have been a destination for visitors for over a century. Generations of families have come to the area year after year; many call it their second home. What keeps them coming back? It could be the beautiful landscape that includes towering trees and sparkling lakes wherever you look. The Paul Bunyan Trail runs right through town. Whether you are walking or biking, you will be sure to take in many photo-worthy moments. It could be our charming downtown area that boasts door after door of fun-filled shopping. There are over 50 shops lining Main Street and the side streets! There are boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, candy shops, coffee shops - even a brewery. Maybe it’s our fun-filled event calendar? We like to celebrate every season here in Nisswa. During the summer, we hold our world-famous Turtle Races on Wednesday afternoons. We also let freedom ring during our Freedom Days Celebration on July 3rd. In September, we hold our annual Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ Contest. The whole town is blanketed with the smell of delicious BBQ, and there is always live music and fun for everyone! Things do not slow down in the winter around here! We kick off the holiday season with our Nisswa City of Lights Festival, which happens the day after Thanksgiving. The whole town looks like the set of a holiday movie, with reindeer, sleigh rides, Santa, carolers, bonfires and, of course - thousands of Christmas lights! We top the evening off with a spectacular fireworks show. In February, we are adding an exciting new event - the Nisswa 100 cross country snowmobile race.

From left: Chamber Office Assistant Dee Bjork, Chamber Executive Assistant Kalie Jay, Chamber President Pam Dorion holding Marley.

In the spring, we welcome the fishermen to town as the ice melts off the lakes and they try their luck at catching the “big one.” We are also host to the Brainerd Jaycees Run for the Lakes - a race with several different events, and a Boston Marathon qualifier! There are many, many more events, but those are the highlights to show you that we do not slow down on the fun in Nisswa! We have you covered with several accommodations in the Nisswa area: hotels, cabins, camping - we have them all! If you just can’t bear to leave, give one of our great Realtors a call to help you find the property of your dreams. Whatever brings you to Nisswa, be sure to stop in and see us at our Welcome Center on Main Street across from the post office.

Madden’s on Gull resorts. Along with these resorts, you will find many places to eat along the road. There are great options on and off the lake for every meal of the day! When you reach the middle of the loop, you will find Mount Ski Gull, The Brainerd Zipline Tour, and the Lakeshore Conservation Club. These are great places to go when looking for some unique activities to try in the area. The Brainerd Zipline Tour offers a breathtaking view of the beautiful lakes area while soaring over the top - just like a bird! No matter what time of year or what time of day you choose to enjoy this peaceful drive, it is amazing. Just remember - especially at dusk - to watch out for wildlife. They feel very at home and love living here and exploring just as much as we do!

GONEFISHING

T

he Nisswa area of Minnesota has always been known as a destination stop for tourists from across the country. That’s the reason it was voted as the “best small town in Minnesota.” Fishing has always been at the forefront when it comes to vacation plans - and for good reason. Nisswa has over 400 lakes within a 30-mile radius that feature lakes from 100 acres to 10,000 acres. Most of these lakes have public accesses and are within a 30-minute drive or less from Nisswa. The lakes in the Nisswa area have long been home to some of the finest walleye fishing in the state. The Gull Lake Chain and the Whitefish Chain are two of the most recognized in the state with abundant numbers of walleyes, northern pike, small and largemouth bass, crappies, sunfish and muskies. Let’s not forget the Mississippi River, which travels through the heart of the lakes area. It offers superb scenery and excellent fishing for all species, especially muskies well above the 50-inch class. In addition to fishing, Nisswa has some of the best golf courses in the state. There are more than a half dozen that will suit the novice or challenge the very skilled golfer. Nisswa also is home to the

NISSWACELEBRITIES

T

he Nisswa area has many residents who have enjoyed successful careers in academics, arts and athletics. This chamber guide features three people with local connections to Nisswa - Chuck Grillo, Joe Haeg and Mallory Weggemann. All three of these talented people have enjoyed success in sports as athletes, coaches or sports team scouts/ managers.

CHUCKGRILLO

DEEPLY INVOLVED IN HOCKEY Grillo, a longtime Nisswa resident, became involved with professional ice hockey as an NHL scout with the New York Rangers and Minnesota North Stars in the 1980s. He eventually became the North Stars’ director of player personnel. Grillo joined the San Jose Sharks staff in 1991, where he was eventually promoted to vice president of player personnel and was responsible for player acquisitions and trades, starting in 1992. He became executive vice president in 1995 and held the title until 1996. He was a scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2001 to 2011. Grillo was a high school hockey coach for 16 years, including earning Minnesota State High School Coach of the Year in 1973. He owned and operated Minnesota Hockey Camps ice hockey development

center on Clark Lake in Nisswa for 39 years. Grillo and Herb Brooks, 1980 Miracle On Ice Olympic men’s hockey coach, had the idea to start Minnesota Hockey Camps in 1976 with a simple purpose in mind: kids have to prepare themselves for the future. Minnesota Hockey Camps helped more than 500 players move on to the

NHL level. Minnesota Hockey Camps was sold in late 2020 to Chris Stewart (former player for the Minnesota Wild), Craig Larson (longtime Minnesota Hockey Camp coach) and Tony Maucieri (local business owner). The camp moved its home at Breezy Point Arena in 2021. Other honors for Grillo include induction into Bemidji High School and Minnesota State Hockey Coaches Halls of Fame.

MALLORYWEGGEMANN

AN INSPIRING PARALYMPIC SWIMMER Weggemann, a part-time Nisswa resident, is a record-setting American Paralympic swimmer. Weggemann, who rode a float in the 2020 Nisswa Stars & Stripes Parade, became a T-10complete paraplegic after an epidural injection to treat post-shingles back pain in 2008. She broke many world records in the S7 classification and won multiple gold

medals at the IPC Swimming World Championships in 2009 and 2010. At the 2012 Paralympics in London, she was controversially reclassified to S8, a class for swimmers with less impairment. She won the S8 50-meter freestyle event in a new Paralympic record time. Having achieved her Olympic goal, Weggemann decided it was time to chase her dream, to walk again. For years, this was something that was deemed impossible, but a new possibility arose and to achieve her goal, Weggemann reached out to the public to ask for their support through an Indiegogo campaign. On November 16, 2013, Weggemann was able to "walk" again for the first time in nearly six years, with the aid of customized leg braces and forearm crutches. Although her wheelchair will never be replaced by her braces and crutches, they have allowed her to have short moments of upright mobility and the freedom of standing at her 5-foot-9 stature again. Weggemann trained for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and built on her career outside of the pool through motivational speaking. She was featured in "The Current," a documentary produced by Make A Hero, a nonprofit organization focused on inspiring individuals with disabilities to enjoy the freedom of adaptive sports. At the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, Weggemann won the women's 100m backstroke S7. The 32-year-old swimmer won in a time of 1:21.27, breaking the Paralympic record of 1:22.72 set in 2016. www.nisswa.com

N

isswa will be a winter destination the weekend of Feb. 26-27, with the Gull Lake Frozen Fore events taking place and - new this year - a cross country snowmobile race. The Nisswa 100 will start and end both days on the Gull Lake ice at Grand View Lodge. The course will be a mixture of lake, ditches, woods and fields and approximately 50 miles long. A race that’s a combination of ice, ditches and woods is unique to the circuit. The Nisswa 100 is part of the Cor PowerSports national cross country snowmobile race circuit (Round 5 in 2022), the largest cross country race circuit in North America. Co-workers at Nisswa Marine worked to bring the race to Nisswa. Growing up, Ross Krautkremer enjoyed watching snowmobile races that took place in Nisswa. So when coworker Justin Olson approached him and half jokingly said Krautkremer - as a city council member - should bring a snowmobile race back to Nisswa, Krautkremer thought, “Why not?” Olson has raced the circuit in the last 10 years and plans to participate in the race taking place right in his own backyard. Even if the area doesn’t have much snow that weekend, the race will go on, taking place on the ice only. “The bottom line to that is we have a unique race because no matter what, we can race,” Olson said. Local snowmobile racers can participate in the race, which is expected to draw up to 150 participants. And it’s just as fun for spectators.

www.nisswa.com

“We’re really hoping it’ll become an annual thing,” Krautkremer said, noting it would be a fun family event in winter and good for the community. “”We’re going to make it family-friendly.” Though Olson and Krautkremer admit the idea started as a pipe dream, both men believe Nisswa is an ideal location for this type of snowmobile race. “We truly feel this is the best location for the race,” said Olson, who has raced in many locations. Pam Dorion, Nisswa Chamber president, said: “The Nisswa Chamber is happy to be able to have the member support and resources to provide another premiere event for Nisswa. We look forward to this becoming an annual winter tradition.” More information about the Nisswa 100 will be available through the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce.

SUMMER

here is nowhere quite like Nisswa in the summertime. People from all over the country - and the world - travel to Nisswa to enjoy all the area has to offer. Our lakes offer great fishing spots, perfect sandy swimming areas, and lots of room for skiing, tubing and wakeboarding. Our parks are full of families enjoying the nice, warm days. Nisswa’s stores are full of fantastic items for shoppers to peruse. Restaurants have their decks and patios open to enjoy a meal in the fresh air. Golf courses are abuzz with players hitting the greens. Bikers, runners and rollerbladers hit the Paul Bunyan Trail for some exercise. On Wednesdays, the Turtle Track is full of kids (and kids at heart) trying their hand at racing turtles in our famous weekly Turtle Races! www.nisswa.com

F

FALL

all brings a crispness to the air in Nisswa. It is a perfect time to take a scenic drive or a walk down the Paul Bunyan Trail as the leaves begin to change. The kids go back to school, and the streets are filled with couples enjoying a romantic getaway or a group of friends in town for a relaxing weekend. September brings our annual Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge, where competitors take a stab at smoking their very best ribs! There’s still great golfing, fishing and boating to enjoy in the fall.

W

WINTER

inter comes, snow falls, and Nisswa is transformed into a scene straight out of a holiday movie. The day after Thanksgiving, Nisswa is lit up for the City of Lights celebration. Lights twinkle up and down the street, holiday shopping is in full swing, and folks sip hot chocolate while taking in the sights. A fantastic fireworks show lights up the night to kick off the holiday season! Things are in full swing at Mount Ski Gull as skiers, snowboarders and tubers make their way down the hill. The area is full of snowmobilers enjoying the hundreds of miles of trails the lakes area has to offer. In February, the Nisswa 100 Cross Country Snowmobile Race brings some of the best racers to town to duke it out for the top spot. Lakes become small cities as ice fishermen bring out their fish houses and try their luck at catching the big one!

FREE DOUGHNUTS AND COFFEE A FISHING OPENER TRADITION

2021 Nisswa Destination Guide

“Hey would you like some free coffee and doughnuts!?” That’s a common question that rings out numerous times across Gull Lake every year on the opening day of the walleye and northern pike fishing season. The question comes from a crowded pontoon that carefully pulls up alongside anglers’ boats throughout the Saturday morning hours, always under the guidance of a skilled captain. Others onboard are Nisswa Chamber staff, a few chamber members, and Miss Nisswa and Little Miss Nisswa wearing crowns and sashes no matter what the weather. Of course, the Miss Nisswa royalty are a hit among anglers. Those anglers who have welcomed the pontoon to pull up next to them are the lucky recipients of a hot cup of coffee and fresh doughnuts, compliments of the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce’s Welcome Wannigan. According to Nisswa history, “wannigan” was a term used for supply boats that plied the waters of Minnesota lakes bringing needed goods and food to logging camps.

www.nisswa.com

WOMEN’S & CHILDREN’S Thus, since 1959, the Nisswa Chamber’s Welcome Wannigan has used various boats, captains and crews to motor around Gull Lake the morning of the fishing opener to serve hot coffee and doughnuts to anglers. As the story goes, Peg Benton, wife of then-Nisswa mayor Russ Benton, came up with the idea to take an old Scandinavian coffee and doughnut tradition and blend it with northwoods history. That weather has run the gamut, from warm temperatures and sunshine, to rain, to cold temperatures and even snow. No matter what the weather, the wannigan crew always has fun. And after a morning on the lake, there’s nothing better than visiting lakes area shops, coffee houses and restaurants to complete your day!

BREEZYPOINTRESORT

BREEZY POINT RESORT SURPASSES CENTURY MARK

H

istory continues to be celebrated as Breezy Point Resort enters its 101st year in 2022. The popular family resort on Pelican Lake got its start in 1921, when Wilford Hamilton Fawcett - better known as Captain Billy - bought 80 acres of land for $500 without ever seeing it but with a plan to build a place for his famous Hollywood friends to come and play. Captain Billy brought those friends up by train to Pequot Lakes and eventually paid to have the road to what is now Breezy Point paved so they would have a smoother limo ride to the resort. Stars like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford signed the resort guestbook in the 1930s. “Friends, politicians and Hollywood celebrities visited Breezy Point to hunt and drink illegal liquor,” the Breezy Pointer, an annual resort publication, says. “Among Fawcett’s guests at the resort were movie stars Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, writer Sinclair Lewis and Minnesota Governor Floyd B. Olson.” Professional golfer Walter Hagen, known as the “father of professional golf" and a major figure in golf in the first half of the 20th century, is another famous person who stayed at the resort. The resort wasn’t necessarily profitable for Captain Billy. The Breezy Pointer says Fawcett “lived a colorful and flamboyant lifestyle while building a publishing empire on a single magazine, Capt. Billy’s Whiz Bang.” That’s where his money came from. Fawcett’s memory lives on at Breezy Point Resort through the Fawcett House - a mansion he built for

himself and that today offers vacationers a place to stay with 11 bedrooms and nine bathrooms - as well as the Whiz Bang deck at the Dockside bar and restaurant. The Fawcett House - rumored to be haunted - is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Last year also marked the Bob and Kay Spizzo family’s 40th year of resort ownership. Bob Spizzo arrived in 1977 with plans to stay for three years to turn around Whitebirch Inc, the parent company of Breezy Point Resort. “And here it’s 40 years later and I’m still here,” Spizzo said. The resort’s biggest asset is likely name recognition, said Spizzo, whose goal continues to be to make the resort better. “We’re always upgrading, constantly. Every time you walk around, you see something’s under construction,” Spizzo said. “In fact, they’re calling me ‘Bob the Builder.’” That’s because he’s always looking for ways to improve the resort and his guests’ experience - whether it’s more wedding venues and meeting rooms, additional activities to keep families busy or housing options for those looking to move. “We either have to get bigger, or we fall behind,” Spizzo said of standing out in a region full of resorts. Besides adding golf courses, restaurants, a recreation facility, a coffee shop and a spa over the years, Spizzo said a big change came when the resort got into hockey. “It’s the only resort I know of with a hockey arena,” he said. That amenity helps fill up the resort’s housing units in the winter. There are plans www.nisswa.com

to add another ice rink, which may spur the need for more resort lodging options. During the summer, the resort is hopping with tourists, weddings, conventions and those who enjoy the resort’s three golf courses and Pelican Lake. Whitebirch Inc. was the first to offer campsite ownership, timeshares and condominiums. A most recent project is the Whitebirch Village, consisting of 52 new townhomes for what Spizzo calls “active adults.” Forty houses are built and occupied, with a dozen more planned to be done by spring. Situated on Whitebirch Golf Course near Antler’s Restaurant, the community is perfect for those looking to downsize and perhaps trade in their lakefront property for one-floor living and no need to do chores like lawn mowing and snow shoveling. During all the years of change and improvements, Spizzo remains especially proud of his staff.

“We now have the third generation of employees whose grandparents worked for us,” he said. “That is a warm feeling when I see kids who are here now and their grandmother or grandfather worked for us.” Breezy Point Resort also has managers who have been employed there for more than 30 years, including Dave Gravdahl, who started as a golf caddy more than 60 years ago and has been general manager for 40 years; and Joyce Bzoskie, president of Whitebirch Inc., the resort’s parent company that was formed to market and develop land around the resort, for 35 years. And the resort has long employed Spizzo’s successor - his son, David, who started working at the resort marina years ago and is now assistant general manager as well as vice president of Whitebirch Inc. “I couldn’t have found a better person,” Bob Spizzo said. “He’s been with me since we picked up cans Sunday mornings after the parties.”

ow many mini golf courses can boast that they are not only within walking distance of great food and “Pretty Good Shopping,” but are also a few short steps from the Paul Bunyan Trail? Nisswa Falls Mini Golf checks all those boxes. Fun for the whole family, this 18hole mini golf course also has nine holes that are ADA-compliant. Built around a 1900s pioneer town (or so the story goes), Nisswa Falls was once a bustling new settlement. That is, until the dam above the waterfall broke and filled the valley with water. The citizens of Nisswa Falls grabbed whatever they could carry and evacuated to higher ground. Once the water subsided, a group of bears, whose own homes were destroyed by the flood, discovered the abandoned town. They quickly moved in, taking over the buildings and businesses of the townspeople. It didn’t take long for Nisswa Falls to become “bear country.” What happened to the people? Well, they established a new settlement just north of the falls, now known as Nisswa. As time went by, the bears realized a source of revenue was needed. Upon hearing rumors of a mini golf course coming to town, they proposed renting “bear country” and a deal was struck. There was just one contingency - the bears would be staying! Everyone is sure to have a one-of-akind experience when golfing at Nisswa Falls. You’ll meet bears like Lou, who is the town gardener. Then there is Gus, who runs the Mill, but prefers to spend his days fishing. Maybe you will run into Ed, who owns the Trading Post loaded

www.nisswa.com

with scavenged human artifacts. Before you leave, be sure to say hello to Meg and stop by her Mercantile for a unique shopping experience. How challenging is the course? Well, locals say the holes are “not too easy and not too hard … but just right!” Nisswa Falls weaves around multiple natural and bear-made wonders, such as waterfalls, rapids, ponds and a 30-foot-long cave!

Come see us in the summer of 2022! Disclaimer: No bears have been captured or harmed in the making of this mini golf course. All bears at Nisswa Falls Mini Golf are carved from 100% authentic Minnesota wood. Located at 25116 Smiley Road, Nisswa, Minnesota, right off Highway 371 and just south off of the Nisswa roundabout.

FORMER NISSWA RESIDENT PAINTS LARGER THAN LIFE DOWNTOWN MURAL

S

urely you’ve noticed something new in Nisswa when driving by on Highway 371 or walking on Main Street downtown. There’s a giant mural on Main Street, one of the Nisswa Chamber’s Instagrammable locations.

The mural on the wall of Kisa Boutique, rising above those dining outside at Big Axe Brewing Co. in downtown Nisswa, is an underwater portrait of a swimmer blowing air bubbles as her face comes up to the top of the water.. The painting is by Samantha French, the daughter of Mike and Julie French, who own

Stonehouse Coffee with locations in Nisswa Square, Sportland Corners in Nisswa and Baxter. Samantha French’s paintings are for sale at the coffee shop and adorn the walls there. French grew up in Nisswa, attending Nisswa Elementary School and graduating from Brainerd High School in 2001. After attending Central Lakes College in Brainerd, French went to the Minnesota College of Art and Design in Minneapolis. That’s where her longtime partner, Aaron Hauck, went after graduating from Brainerd High School in 1996. The two met during French’s last year of high school. Hauck moved to New York in 2005, and French soon followed after graduating in December 2005. They lived in Queens in Brooklyn for 12 years before leaving the city and moving upstate four years ago. The artists were returning home in summer 2021 from New York to celebrate Mike French’s 70th birthday. “He said, ‘Hey, do you want to do a mural?’” Samantha French said, and the trip turned into a working vacation of 12- to 14-hour days painting the wall in hot conditions. French and Hauck made the drive from New York with their paint, equipment and two dogs. Mike and Julie French own the building where Kisa Boutique is located. It’s right next to Big Axe, which their son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Rebecca French, own. “We had thought about how cool a mural would look there quite some time ago,” Julie French. “The huge tree there on the Big Axe patio would have excluded the view.” www.nisswa.com

Then Julie and Mike drove by one day in June 2021, looked up at the wall and again thought of the mural. The big tree had caught fire and burned down on a windy day a few months earlier, and the Frenches realized the wall was now a perfect spot for a mural. “We knew Sam was coming home for Mike’s 70th birthday party. Mike got on the phone and talked to her about it,” Julie said, adding the plans came together in just a few weeks. “We’re just really glad she and Aaron were able to do it. We love it. Everyone loves it. We’re getting all kinds of positive comments,” Julie said, adding it’s nice to bring that artistic life to Nisswa. “It’s quite beautiful. We’re really proud of her and Aaron and just grateful that they were willing to do that,” she said, especially in such hot, sunny weather. French and Hauck painted with brushes and a mix of colors. The model depicted is an artist friend. French said all her paintings are based on someone they know or family members. This body of work explores the idea of escape, the tranquility and nostalgia for the lazy summer days of her childhood, her website says.

CITIZENOFTHEYEAR

NISSWA’S CITIZEN OF THE YEAR DEDICATES HER LIFE TO SERVICE

L

ee Seipp, a Nisswa resident since moving here as a teen in the mid-1970s when her parents, Al and Jane Gunsbury, bought the Quarterdeck Resort on Gull Lake, said it’s strange to be recognized for something you just do - community service. “We serve,” she said, noting you don’t expect recognition for that. Seipp was recognized as the 2021 Nisswa Citizen of the Year for her dedication to Nisswa. She and her husband, Terry, raised their children in Nisswa. Seipp explains her philosophy of giving back to her community. “The idea of service started for me when I was in Brownies, then Girl Scouts. My mom was a leader,” she said, adding she grew up knowing the importance of service. “It’s as basic as air and water. It’s what we do. It’s part of life. You don’t expect to be recognized for it.

LEE IS JUST ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT LIVE AND BREATHE NISSWA. IF THERE IS A WAY FOR HER TO HELP THIS LITTLE COMMUNITY, SHE IS WILLING TO STEP UP AND STEP IN. SHAWN HANSEN,

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, THE OUTREACH PROGRAM OF BRAINERD LAKES

“Anything I’ve done, I’ve done in collaboration with many, many people who have a common goal,” Seipp said. “I see my family as just one big extended family, and we all have the responsibility to each do our own small part.” “Lee is just one of those people that Live and Breathe Nisswa,” Shawn Hansen wrote in her nomination letter. “If there is a way for her to help this little community, she is willing to step up and step in.”

2021 Nisswa Destination Guide

Hansen, a former Nisswa Chamber president and now the executive director of The Outreach Program of Brainerd Lakes in Nisswa, has known Seipp for 22 years and believed she should be recognized for what she does for the community. “I think the thing I like best about Lee is her heart is just generously good,” Hansen said. “When you look at the names of past citizens of the year, you realize how much those people have impacted this community. Their leadership and commitment to Nisswa have helped create the amazing ‘buzz’ about why Nisswa is such an incredible place to live. Lee Seipp is very deserving of this honor. She inspires those around her to be good citizens.” Seipp’s community involvement includes: an active member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Nisswa; an active member of the Nisswa Women of Today organization for many years; an active member of the Nisswa Women’s Club, where Seipp’s mother is also active; and a chamber volunteer for many years. Chamber activities included serving on the chamber board when her family owned the Quarterdeck Resort, and volunteering countless hours at the City of Lights, Freedom Days and Fall Festival events, as well as meeting various needs in the chamber office. She is a Rotarian; a volunteer at The Outreach Program of Brainerd Lakes, a humanitarian food aid organization that packages meals; and she has served on city committees, including as a founding member of the Friends of Nisswa Lake Park.

Mount Ski Gull in the summer. • Children’s programming with Region 5 Minnesota Children’s Museum. Upgrades have been made in the past couple of years to enhance visitors’ experiences at Mount Ski Gull. • A magic carpet - a conveyor belt installed at snow level - was installed on the bunny hill in 2018, and was later expanded another 60 feet. • A 700-foot magic carpet was installed on the snow tubing hill in fall 2019. The snow tubing hill was redone in 2019. • A 580-square-foot Colorado yurt - a circular, sturdy shelter that works well in extreme weather conditions - was installed at the end of 2020 to provide more indoor space at Mount Ski Gull. • Lighting upgrades on the west part of the hill are taking place for those who use the tubing hill and terrain park. • A new septic system is being installed. Expanding the bunny hill magic carpet allows people to get up the hill easier than the previous tow rope, which has changed the way Mount Ski Gull does school programs and lessons, said Mata Agre, Mount Ski Gull general manager. The tubing hill magic carpet allows people to get to the top of the tubing hill faster, allows for an increased number of people to use the hill, and makes it safer and more accessible to more people, Agre said. The yurt is a separate facility from the chalet that is fully insulated and heated. It’s available for rent, such as for banquets, or for overflow space when needed. www.nisswa.com

“It just gives us more space,” Agre said. Programming Mount Ski Gull offers a wide variety of programming: • An alpine ski team for ages 4-18. • Different freestyle and snowboard programming with a variety of lessons. Learn to ski program that hosts just over 1,000 area sixth-graders every winter. “We’re always trying to upgrade and move forward. We’re really excited about the things we have going on this year as well,” Agre said.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ENJOY SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

I

n her eighth year as Nisswa Elementary School principal, Molly Raske says the very best aspect of working at Nisswa School is the people. “I have the best job! Our students are steller, the staff is beyond outstanding, the families believe in us and support their student(s) in every way and the community wraps around us in a way that only happens in Nisswa. “We are a true community school and that's what makes this place feel like we are living in a fairy tale.I am working in the best place there is and for the best people there are.” Raske plays a key role in this fairy tale, leading students in preschool through grade 4. Read this Q&A with Nisswa Elementary School’s leader.

What motivates you to: Dress as an elf and dance on the roof, brainstorm a costume for Halloween, do fun and wacky things? “Our students motivate me every day to do things that are fun, wacky, difficult or push my limits of comfort. “The day before Christmas break, even when it is 29 degrees below zero, you will find me on the roof, dressed like an elf and welcoming our students. Every year, I come down with my eyelashes stuck together, exhausted and wondering if I should do this next year and without fail, a student will come up to me with a sparkle in their eye and say they came to school that day just to dance with me. “That’s why I do it. The best part about all this is, it isn’t just me doing these things within our school. The staff at Nisswa Elementary do things every single day that ensures that our kids feel loved, special and as if they cannot miss a day of school. Every day of the year our staff is ‘dancing on the roof’ in one way or another for a child. “That’s why we do these things.” How and why do you maintain your incredibly positive and upbeat attitude? “I truly believe that when you are in the place you are meant to be, doing what you are meant to do, there is no reason not to be grateful and upbeat. I work with and for the best people and I try to keep that in mind. “Those that work at Nisswa Elementary are amazing and inspire me to try to be and do better. I think the difficulties of the past two years have shown me to appreciate the good days. The days when we are together, healthy and able to support each other. “Every day together is a gift and being grateful fuels us to know that our future's so bright!” Share our "Only in Nisswa" things Nisswa students get to do and the importance of them. “We have SO many “Only in Nisswa” experiences that happen every single day. We truly get to raise our kids in the best place on Earth! We have our students attending school in a state of the art facility and instructed by the www.nisswa.com

best practitioners in the state. Our staff and community support our students in their development in a way that I have not seen anywhere but within Brainerd Public Schools. “Here are a FEW that I LOVE:” Nisswa Fire Safety: The Nisswa Fire Department is the BEST! During fire safety week each year, our fire department will report to our school during a fire drill, spray the school with the fire hoses, give a fire safety presentation where the firefighters come dressed in full gear to teach the students not to be scared, and they give our kindergartners a ride on the fire trucks. Only in Nisswa can you see a kindergartner riding on the top of a fire truck in October! These experiences help them see themselves in these roles! We so appreciate our firefighters for what they do to keep us safe every day of the year, but especially what they do for all of us that day. Flag Disposal Ceremony: Our Nisswa American Legion supports our fourth graders each year in learning about the proper way to retire a flag, fold the flag and patriotism. Members from our local Legion come to school, march our fourth grade students the half mile to the ceremony, and teach them the important lessons around our flag. It is so moving to hear the lesson, feel the passion that our Legion members have for our flag and teaching our students and supporting them in developing their understanding. It is AMAZING! Nisswa Chamber Halloween Parade: Every year our entire school is invited to dress up and parade through the “spooky bank” down to the train caboose (hosted by the Nisswa Historical Society) and past all of the businesses in their Halloween costumes. They come back with bags of candy and with their hearts full from this “Only in Nisswa” experience. I love our Chamber! This day is one of our favorites as it reminds us just how supported our little school is by every single person who lives, works or plays here. It is the BEST and I invite everyone to come and watch this magical event! Nisswa Bloom: Each year our PTO puts on a huge fundraiser at Grand View Lodge that is like no other. It is a night out for parents and community members to support Nisswa Elementary. At that event we are reminded of how much our community and families support our little school to ensure that we are able to provide so many “Only in Nisswa” experiences throughout the year. Through this event, our PTO is able to www.nisswa.com

support art instruction, flexible seating options/active classrooms, field trips, authentic learning experiences (outdoor garden spaces), Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre, new books for our bookroom, STEAM supplies, social emotional tools and books and so much more. Our community and PTO are so active in ensuring that we know, feel and are provided with whatever is needed. We are so grateful. Turtle races: I LOVE Turtle Race Day! The TOWN sure does show up for our

kids and Turtle race day is AWESOME! Emma Krueger from A&W donates root beer floats for every student to kick off the event and then every student races a turtle. It is SO fun to see these kids participate in this Nisswa event! During the summer, I love Wednesdays as I know that so many visitors get a little taste of what it’s like to live here. And on this day in May, our kids remind me that we GET TO LIVE HERE. There’s nothing like being reminded how fortunate we are and Turtle Race Day does that for me.
