The “Caps Off 2024” magazine, a tribute to the local high school and college graduates, enjoyed a popular debut last spring with support from the schools, parents, students and advertisers.
This year’s publication is once again as a keepsake edition printed as a glossy magazine, and includes sections to honor the top area graduates and provide details on area graduation ceremonies.
The graduates have all worked hard to achieve success, and “Caps Off 2024” is an admirable way to commemorate that effort with graduation previews for Central Lakes College in Brainerd, plus a dozen area high schools from Pine River-Backus to Little Falls and Wadena-Deer Creek to Aitkin.
“Caps Off 2024” features detailed information for each graduation ceremony, plus a list of top 2024 graduates from each school.
Thanks to the advertisers who support our second “Caps Off” magazine, and congratulations to all of our area graduates! Best of luck in the future!

“The LRCS Class of 2024 will be greatly missed next year. They have done a great job of leading our underclassmen in society activities and student-led chapels. It has been encouraging to watch them grow physically, mentally and spiritually over the past year. We are looking forward to seeing how God uses the unique gifts that He has given to each one of them. Thank you class of 2024. You will be missed!”
In the waning weeks of their high school careers, a few seniors at Brainerd High School got the experience of a lifetime.
Along with some of their underclassmen peers and adviser Curtis Brisk, members of the school’s Super Mileage Club trekked to Indiana and took a turn on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“I’m super excited,” senior Levi Jillson said March 28. “I’m just happy we’re going to go and be there, and our goal for this whole thing is to be able to make
a lap on the track with all these big schools.”
The BHS students were set to be the underdogs as they readied their homemade electric car for the racetrack at the Shell Ecomarathon.
The goal of the Super Mileage Club is for students to build a prototype vehicle that’s as fuel efficient as possible. This year’s car — called the Carbon Car or Blue Shell — is composed of hydraulic brakes, a carbon fiber shell and an electric batterypowered motor. As the car runs, a meter measures
the amount of electricity used to travel a certain distance.
Club members typically race their car at the
state competition at Brainerd International Raceway each year, but this year they were invited to run with the big dogs in Indianapolis.
“I’m pretty proud of this group,” Brisk said of his students.
“I’ve got a really strong group of seniors and juniors this year that have been doing Super Mileage Club for, some of them, multiple years.”
One of those students is Jillson, who’s been in Super Mileage club since his freshman year and is this year’s team captain.
“He’s a worker bee,” Brisk said.
“If something’s not right, he’s communicating that with everybody.”
Since joining the team, Jillson said he’s learned all about fabrication
and mechanical engineering.
“All the moving parts and trying to get everything to achieve the best fuel mileage is a lot more than just putting it together. There’s a lot of thinking in it,” Jillson said.
And he hopes to maintain that line of thinking as he looks to the future, planning to join the National Guard after high school before going on to college. His ideal school would be Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, where he could be a part of a collegiate Super Mileage team.
“That’s my highest goal,” he said.
Fellow senior team member Carley Cronquist feels she’s more mechanically inclined after two years as a part of the Super Mileage Club, which she’s hopeful will help in her goal to be an aerospace engineer.
“I came into it not knowing anything,” she said of the club.
“So just learning how motors work and building the car has been pretty fun.”
And Hayden Roberts isn’t looking to pursue anything engineering-related in his career, but does hope to work on and build cars as a side hobby, using some of what he’s learned in Super Mileage Club.
“It takes a lot more effort to actually design a vehicle than you think,” Roberts said.
No matter what the students decide to do with their futures, they’re in good company among Super Mileage Club members who have come before them.
Brisk said he’s had students go on to study mechanical engineering and find jobs as diesel mechanics.
“A lot of other kids go on to be welders and electricians,” he said. “This is the club for those kids that like working their hands. … They get to use and learn a wide variety of different skills.”
To the speedway Brisk’s goal for his students once in Indianapolis was
simply to pass the technical inspection with their vehicle.
“Tech inspection is where they take the car through a variety of different tests, and they look at how well the car’s built and if it passes a safety inspection,” he said.
If anything is wrong, the kids are tasked with fixing it before they can get on the track.
They exceeded Brisk’s goal, not only passing tech inspection, but placing 11th in their division out of 22 high schools and universities in North America. The Brainerd team placed third among the high school teams, beating out five other high schools and six colleges, including the University of Michigan.
“It’s a huge milestone for our clubs for our kids,” Brisk said after the competition. “The kid worked hard, and being the thirdhighest scoring high school there is pretty impressive.”
The kids only had a couple minor adjustments to make before hitting the track, and they got several compliments on the neat wiring job in their car, which is something Brisk said his students paid special attention to.
“The group of seniors I got this year, they are very hard working. They troubleshoot, and they don’t stop until they figure that issue out,” he said. “... They’re just a good group of kids.”
