Showtime presents the series premiere of ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’

While millions of TV viewers may be obsessed with the latest news or big-cat royalty as of late, discerning audiences will soon have another darkly imaginative world into which they can escape. A tale of supernatural forces, murder, racism and political tension is about to premiere on prime time.

In 1938, the LAPD’s first MexicanAmerican detective, Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto, “Here and Now”), and his partner, Lewis Michener (Na than Lane, “The Birdcage,” 1996), investigate a grisly murder in the de but of “Penny Dreadful: City of An gels,” airing Sunday, April 26, on Showtime. What follows is an epic story that explores L.A.’s tradition of Mexican-American folklore, the es pionage of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. While it may share a supernatural theme with its predecessor, “Penny Dreadful,” this new series is not a continuation of that story. It is, in fact, a whole new saga in its own right. In a March article on Entertain ment Weekly’s website, Rory Kinnear, who portrayed Fran kenstein’s monster in the

original series, explained how “City of Angels” is connected to the acclaimed British-American horror drama.

“The continuity from the first iteration of ‘Penny Dreadful’ to this one is the supernatural element in which monsters are present, but the main monsters are within the characters,” said Kinnear, who returns to the franchise as pediatrician Dr. Peter

of Thrones”) plays Magda, a dangerous goddess who can take on the appearance of anyone she chooses.

Lorenza Izzo (“Aftershock,” 2012) has a recurring role as Magda’s sister, Santa Muerte, the Angel of Holy Death, who is cursed to collect the souls of the departed.

In an interview with ew.com in December 2019, Dormer said her character would take on different

just before the Second World War, but it’s really a commentary on the day,” Dormer said in a behind-thescenes sneak peek posted on ew.com in March.

As the story unfolds, viewers are introduced to a rich cast of characters connected to Magda, Vega, Michener and Craft.

When rising tensions in the city threaten her loved ones in the season premiere, Vega’s mother, Maria (Adriana Barraza, “Babel,” 2006), asks Santa Muerte to protect her family. Mateo Vega (Johnathan Nieves, “Grey’s Anatomy”), Tiago’s younger brother, lacks purpose and, as a result, is easily influenced by those around him. In contrast, eldest son Raul Vega (Adam Rodriguez, “CSI: Miami”) is a community advocate and union leader. The youngest Vega sibling is Josefina (Jessica Garza, “The Purge,” 2018), the quiet and obedient younger sister.

Conan Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg has been accused of plagiarizing Barack Obama in his campaign speeches. When asked about it, Buttigieg said, “I would never plagiarize a speech, and neither would my wife, Michelle.” So that works.

A Little Late With Lilly Singh

Sexuality has more flavors than Baskin Robbins!

Right now, not enough people care about climate change, and, honestly, if even Leonardo DiCaprio can’t make us care, then we’re doomed.

I don’t understand how anyone drinks and then doesn’t want to dance. That’s like if you took Viagra and decided to just watch Netflix without the “chill.”

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Taco Bell announced that they are offering every American one free Doritos Loco Taco. Experts are calling it “not what we need during a national toilet paper shortage.”

it’s L.A.

While Michener is determined to uncover the actions of the Third Reich in Los Angeles, LAPD Capt. Ned Vanderhoff (Brent Spiner, “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) just wants clear sailing into his retirement.

Religion also factors into the “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” story. Radio evangelist Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé, “Halt and Catch Fire”) has captivated many faithful followers thanks to her skills as an orator and singer. As Molly grapples with the demands of her complicated life, her mother, Miss Adelaide Finnester (Amy Madigan, “Roe vs. Wade,” 1989), manages the church’s finances and keeps watch over their growing religious empire.

In the political arena, Councilman Charlton Townsend (Michael Gladis, “Mad Men”) heads the city council’s transportation committee, which has been busy building the city’s first freeways. Unfortunately, such construction threatens to displace local Mexican-American communities, leading to increased social tension throughout the city. Mysterious German architect Richard Gross (Thomas Kretschmann, “Dracula”) has grand plans for the city and does his best to ally himself with the city’s leaders. He also has ties to the Third Reich. He’s shadowed by his bodyguard, chauffeur and assassin, Kurt (Dominic Sherwood, “Shadowhunters”).

The Wimbledon tennis tournament is the next big sporting event that will be canceled. Don’t worry, if you still want to hear men and women grunting all day, just listen to the quarantined couple next door.

A Dutch museum says that a Vincent Van Gogh painting was stolen. Apparently, the security guard tried stopping the thieves but couldn’t get within six feet of them.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

It turns out Bolton was concerned that Trump did favors for autocratic leaders. Just concerned?! That’s it?! That’s like your doctor saying, “Alright, your blood pressure is normal. I am concerned about this arrow sticking out of your heart.”

Folks, I hope you’re sitting down, because I have some terrible news: the news.

WHAT’S ON NETFLIX

“The Last Kingdom” Season 4 Put your allegiances to the test as “The Last Kingdom” returns for a fourth season on Sunday, April 26. The ninth-century historical drama series, which Netflix stepped in to coproduce at the beginning of Season 2, chronicles the life and conquests of Uhtred Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon, “American Horror Story”) as he struggles both with his inner demons and his military enemies. Kidnapped by the Danish Vikings during their invasion of Saxony and raised as a Dane, Uhtred later learns he is the rightful successor to a Saxon earldom. He grapples with his loyalty to the people who raised him and his duty to uphold his birthright while the landscapes of the kingdoms and surrounding areas continue to change. Based on “The Saxon Stories” novels by English author Bernard Cornwell, the first three seasons vaguely follow the plot of the first six books. Season 4 consists of 10 episodes and picks up where the saga left off as the Saxons and the Danes are about to enter into a battle for the ages, and the fates of Uhtred, Wessex and the seven kingdoms all hang in the balance. Returning characters include Brida (Emily Cox, “Jerks”), Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth, “DCI Banks”) and Aelfric (Joseph Millson, “Casino Royale,” 2006), among others.

“Never Have I Ever”

Fans of “The Mindy Project” will delight in Mindy Kaling’s newest project, coming to Netflix on Monday, April 27. This new series marks the theatrical debut of Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan in the role of Devi, an awkward, first-generation Tamil Indian teenager with a quick temper and a zest for life. This modern-day coming-of-age story is loosely based on Kaling’s own experiences as a teenager born to Indian parents in America, and the story is told in a 10-episode arc. The sitcom also stars Poorna Jagannathan (“The Night Of”), Richa Moorjani (“NCIS: Los Angeles”) and Benjamin Norris (“WTF!,” 2017) in recurring roles.

“A Secret Love”

Originally fixed to premiere at SXSW’s film festival last month, actorturned-director Chris Bolan’s (“Six Women,” 2017) documentary comes to Netflix on Wednesday, April 29. Bolan’s directorial debut tells the true story of two women, Pat Henschel and Terry Donahue — Donahue’s professional baseball career inspired the 1992 film “A League of Their

Own.” The women’s love story spans more than 70 years and explores how the women first met in 1947, how they stayed together despite societal pressures and widely held disapproval, and how their (often hidden) love kept them going, even as Donahue battled Parkinson’s disease until her death in 2019.

“Dangerous Lies”

Get ready to question everything on Thursday, April 30, as Netflix’s original thriller, “Dangerous Lies” (aka “Windfall”), comes to the screen. Written by award-winning screenwriter and producer David Golden (“The Autumn Waltz,” 2016) and directed by Michael Scott (“Cedar Cove”), the film follows the death of a rich, elderly man (Elliott Gould, “Friends”) and the life of his caregiver, Katie (Camila Mendes, “Riverdale”), who is unexpectedly left a sizable inheritance as she is named as the sole beneficiary in his will. The estate, however, comes with its own set of troubles, and Katie and her partner, Adam (Jessie T. Usher, “Independence Day: Resurgence,” 2016), get caught up in a vicious crime and its subsequent investigation.

“Hollywood”

On Friday, May 1, learn that “there’s no business like show business” with this extraordinary original. World War II has just come to an end in this eight-episode limited series that follows a group of aspiring young actors and filmmakers as they attempt to strike it big during the Golden Age of Tinseltown. Produced by Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”) and Ian Brennan (“The Politician”) and starring Darren Criss (“Glee”) as Raymond and Jake Picking (“Patriots Day,” 2016) as Hollywood legend Rock Hudson, this series balances fact-based situations and characters with elaborated, fictional details to expose the prejudices surrounding race, gender and sexuality in Old Hollywood. It explores the politics, power dynamics and social construct

details, character arcs and scenarios change rapidly throughout the 124 episodes, “Nashville” stays true to its southern states charm, dramatic roots and unparalleled musical talent from start to finish. Repeat appearances throughout the six seasons from real-life and on-screen sisters Maddie (Lennon Stella, “We Are Savvy”) and Daphne Conrad (Maisy Stella, “Spirit Riding Free”), Rayna’s musical partner and former lover, Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten, “Swing Vote,” 2008), and shy, sweet Scarlett O’Connor (Clare Bowen, “Home and Away”) round out the series, making it a truly binge-worthy show.

of showbiz and reimagines what the institution would look like today if those biases had been addressed, rather than accepted, long ago.

WHAT’S ON HULU

“Footloose” (2011)

Dust off your dancing shoes on Wednesday, April 29; there’s a new movie on Hulu. In this remake of the 1984 classic film of the same name, musically inclined city kid Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald, “Fear the Walking Dead”) moves to a small town in the American Midwest with his family and finds himself on the wrong side of the community’s laws. Following the death of five local teenagers after a night of music and dancing, the town has passed a motion to ban all minors from listening to rock music and, worse still, they’ve banned kids from dancing. As Ren struggles to fit in with his new environment, he realizes he has more in common with the rest of his class than he originally thought. With the help of the preacher’s daughter, Ariel (Julianne Hough, “Dancing With the Stars”), a country boy, Willard (Miles Teller, “War Dogs,” 2016), and a high school athlete, Woody (Ser’Darius Blain, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” 2017), Ren’s vivacious spirit and love for dance begins to inspire the whole town. Directed by Sundance Film Festival award winner Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow,” 2005), the film also stars Hollywood big-timers Dennis Quaid (“The Day After Tomorrow,” 2004) as Rev. Moore and Andie MacDowell (“Groundhog Day,” 1993) as the reverend’s wife, Vi.

“Nashville”

All six seasons of this soapy musical drama are now available. The series, which began in 2012, follows the rising stardom of young country singer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere, “Heroes”), while country music legend Rayna James (Connie Britton, “Dirty John”) sees her popularity and career begin to fade. While plot

WHAT’S ON PRIME “Upload”

From comedy guru Greg Daniels, cocreator of “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” comes Prime’s new science fiction satire series on Friday, May 1. The premiere season of this dark comedy takes place in a not-so-distant future when virtual reality, 3D printers for food and hologram phones have become a regular part of everyday life on Earth. When Nathan (Robbie Amell, “The Duff,” 2015), an up-and-coming young app developer, is involved in a deadly self-driving car accident, he must choose the landscape for his afterlife. Hastily deciding with his girlfriend, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards, “Friends From College”), to live after death in her family’s luxuriously designed afterlife, Lakeview, he is uploaded and meets Nora (Andy Allo, “Pitch Perfect 3,” 2018), his virtual reality spirit guide. Through Nathan’s budding friendship with Nora, his choice to live in Lakeview and his adjustment to the active concept of an afterlife, the show features other quirky characters, such as the newly-dead Upload user, Luke (Kevin Bigley, “Scream Queens,” 2016), a rebellious and rather selfish war veteran, and the overly-cheerful, eager-tohelp AI Guy (Owen Daniels, “Youth & Consequences”). The first season is set to include 10 episodes.

Have you ever come across an image of a dish or dessert and thought to yourself, “I could do that”? (We all have. That’s why cooking shows have been a staple of television for decades.)

It all looks so easy and perfect on Instagram or Pinterest, but things don’t always turn out how you’d hoped. Mess up the sponge layers or overestimate your decorating abilities, and you could end up with a cake that will make people laugh for all the wrong reasons — or the right ones if you’re a baker on “Nailed It!”

A Netflix original series, “Nailed It!” happily steps all over the fine line that separates expectation from reality in the kitchen. It’s goofy, it’s silly; it’s an internet meme brought to life on our TV screens. And it’s filled with baking mishaps and dessert disasters that would horrify any pastry chef worth their fleur de sel.

A fourth season dropped earlier this month, and if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s just the kind of light-fare, feel-good TV show we need right now. Because the series never comes off as mean spirited, even as it revels in failure. Everyone’s in on the joke and the bakers are just having fun (they’re also hoping to win $10,000)

No one, not even world-famous pastry chef Jacques Torres (aka Mr. Chocolate), has a harsh word for the amateur bakers on this show as they attempt to replicate pro-level cakes and iced cookies in just an hour or two.

In fact, the worst criticism you’ll hear from host Nicole Byer, head judge Torres or any of the guest judges in Season 4, is a reluctant admission that “it didn’t taste very good.” But even this is quickly followed up with some smiling words of encouragement.

This season’s celebrity guests in-

clude actors Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”) and Matt Walsh (“Veep”) and Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas. And I won’t give away all the challenges if you haven’t streamed the whole season yet, but highlights (or lowlights?) include root beer-infused cake and one shaped like the sphinx.

Once you’ve watched all four seasons of “Nailed It!,” there’s more to binge-watch. With two holiday editions and four international spinoffs, this is one food show that proves to err is human (and hilarious, too).

Feature Story

There’s no such thing as a perfect mom. Everybody’s still trying to figure out parenthood, right? But maybe some of us are having an easier time than others. “American Housewife” is ABC’s side-splitting sitcom about the frustrating yet hilarious journey of being a mom of teenagers. The newest episode airs Wednesday, April 29, on ABC.

Katy Mixon (“Mike & Molly”) narrates and stars in this hilarious family-focused sitcom. She plays the beautiful Katie Otto, a downto-earth wife and mom of three in Westport, Connecticut. Like most moms out there, she struggles with her self-esteem and body-positivity. This was only made worse when her neighbor moved away, leaving her as the self-proclaimed second-fattest woman on the block.

Her husband, Greg Otto (Diedrich Bader, “Better Things”), is a history professor and caring dad who loves his wife’s curvy figure and feisty personality. Their oldest daughter, Taylor (Meg Donnelly, “The Broken Ones,” 2017), is on the cusp of adulthood, a fact that Katie and Greg are having a tough time dealing with. Her constant search for popularity (and her sometimes underwhelming intelligence) makes for some hilarious household tension.

They are also kept on their toes by their enterprising son, Oliver (Daniel DiMaggio, “Burn Notice”), who has a knack for making money and finding loopholes. Thankfully, they get a bit of a break with their youngest daughter, Anna-Kat (Julia Butters, “Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood,” 2019). Despite her slight neurotic tendencies, she often wins the award for favorite child.

And because no mom can do it all on her own, Katie relies on her two best friends to get her through. She meets with recently divorced Doris (Ali Wong, “Always Be My Maybe,” 2019) regularly, as well as Angela (Carly Hughes, “Brampton’s Own,” 2018), a single mother and lesbian. The three of them meet every day for “second breakfast.” Doris is strict with her chil-

dren, while Angela takes a much more relaxed attitude.

The two balance out Katie quite well, helping her to find solutions for her daily parenting woes. In recent episodes, Taylor has started to turn to Angela for advice, and Doris and Angela have started dating siblings. All of these things are leaving Katie feeling a little left out. We’re interested to see how their relationships continue to blossom and change as Season 4 progresses.

“American Housewife” has not been ABC’s only attempt to connect with the average American family, and it hasn’t been their only success, either. The sitcom follows the huge success of “Modern Family,” “Black-ish” and “The Goldbergs.” And while “American Housewife” is still growing in popularity, its sharp humor has not escaped the eye of critics. The show was nominated for a People’s Choice Award in 2017 for Favorite New TV Comedy, and in November 2019 the show was renewed for a fifth season.

Written by Sarah Dunn (“Spin City”), this show was originally set to be released under the title “The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport.” While they have since changed the show’s name, this gives you a good clue as to the biting wit of the jokes this show delivers so well. “American Housewife” includes executive producers Aaron Kaplan, Kenny Schwartz, Rick Wiener and Sarah Dunn. And while it was produced by Kapital Entertainment and ABC Studios, it is under the umbrella of Disney, which seems to help the show keep a wholesome edge to it.

“American Housewife” has featured myriad guest stars, several of whom enjoy recurring roles. Some of our favorites have included Nathan Fillion (“Firefly”), Luke Bryan (“Nashville”), Kelly Ripa (“Live with Kelly and Ryan”) and the legendary Lionel Richie (“American Idol”).

Katy Mixon gives us a reliably strong performance as her relatable character. She is the mom we would all want to sit next to at a PTA meeting — the most downto-earth and the most likely to dish about the other crazy parents.

Meg Donnelly, Julia Butters, Diedrich Bader, Katy Mixon and Daniel DiMaggio star in “American Housewife”

The show has made some waves, receiving criticism for a few of its jokes, including jabs at citizens of Newark, Westport’s real-life neighboring town. The show’s humor also relies heavily on stereotypes, although not the ones you would expect. Katie, for instance,

often refers to her obnoxiously athletic neighbor as “Two-Fitbit Lady.”

In general, Katie sees herself as surrounded by rich and beautiful people who live perfect lives in perfect homes. She fights to find pride in her quirky family and is learning

to be OK with their imperfections. Despite the criticism, this is one reason that the show has done so well: her issues and brand of humor are completely relatable with modern moms and housewives, who find comfort in sarcasm and humor in reality.

So, if you’re dying for a break from the kids and looking for someone who understands what you’re going through, tune in to “American Housewife” on ABC. Check out the newest episode of this family comedy when it airs Wednesday, April 29.
