Cover Story this week

Facing off ‘We Hunt Together’ redefines crime duos

What happens when a witty, drop-dead charming possible psychopath meets a broke, softhearted and gullible former child soldier? Hermione Corfield (“Sea Fever,” 2019) plays the former, Freddy, while Dipo Ola (“Baghdad Central”) plays the latter, Baba — together, they make a lustful and deadly duo. Sparks fly, both literally and figuratively, in the new sixepisode police drama “We Hunt Together.”

Premiering Sunday, Aug. 9, on Showtime, the series has an excep tional cast, which includes Eve Myles (“Keeping Faith”) as Detec tive Sergeant Lola Franks and Ba bou Ceesay (“Dark Money”) as Detective Investigator Mendy.

“We Hunt Together” is a com pelling spin on the traditional catand-mouse chase and offers a deep, dark look into just how fatal the right combination of sexual at traction and emotional exploita tion can be. As Franks and Mendy track the deadly Freddy and Baba, you’ll find yourself at the edge of your seat frequently.

Though the cat-and-mouse dy namic is central, it’s not as cut and dried as other stories of the same genre. Adding a crucial dimension to the series is the tricky relation ship between Franks and Mendy. They find themselves working to gether on a high-profile murder case, and though their co-opera tion is vital to their success, Mendy’s background in police an ti-corruption doesn’t sit well with Franks. The idea that people can never be truly held accountable for their actions plagues Franks, and it’s a conviction that Mendy finds troubling. Their conflicting views create complications throughout the investigation, and the situa tion is further complicated by Franks’ difficulty overcoming her own personal issues.

Ultimately, this is the kind of crime drama that gets you rooting for the hunters and the hunted at

the same time. You’ll fall for Franks and Mendy as the good guys, of course, but Freddy and Baba are oddly endearing, too, and their quirks and vulnerabilities will reel you in. Layered characters and some seriously shocking twists really elevate this series.

The rest of the cast includes guest actors Nigel Harman (“Mount Pleasant”), Kris Marshall (“Trick or Treat,” 2019), Steffan Rhodri (“Last Summer,” 2018), Vicki Pepperdine (“The Windsors”), Neil Stuke (“Silk”) and Per-

Gaby Hull, whose credits include the 2019 hit series “Cheat,” which also revolved around a relationship that was as steamy as it was criminal. In “Cheat,” Hull focused on the toxic psychology between a university professor and her student. In “We Hunt Together,” Hull transforms the same energy into an unorthodox suspense drama driven by a hunting game between two couples on opposing ends of the legal spectrum. The new series breaks long-held traditions and takes the genre to a whole new level.

script as airtight as possible. In fact, he says it’s the most effective way to do it: ensuring procedural blocks are well established throughout the plot is critical, and engaging hooks and procedural beats keep people craving more, while the cat-and-mouse game grips the audience the entire time.

“We Hunt Together” is directed by Carl Tibbetts, who was also one of the directors of the 2019 Amazon Prime series “The Feed” and 2018’s BBC miniseries “The Woman in White.” Tibbetts also worked

WHAT’S NEW ON APPLE TV+

“Ted Lasso”

Head across the pond with Jason Sudeikis (“Booksmart,” 2019) as he stars in this new sports comedy series premiering Friday, Aug. 14, on Apple TV+. Sudeikis takes the lead as small-time American football college coach Ted Lasso, who uproots his life in Kansas when he is offered a job coaching a struggling soccer team in London, England. Despite knowing hardly anything about the U.K. and even less about English football, Lasso makes it his mission to bring the floundering team to glory. It won’t be easy, as every decision he makes is scrutinized by the media and the fans (who, frankly, are harsher than the media). Luckily, he has his fellow coach, Beard (Brendan Hunt, “Bless This Mess”), and his adviser, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham, “Sex Education”), as allies.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX

“Project Power” (2020)

Have you ever wanted to have superpowers? For the citizens of New Orleans, that dream becomes real, if only for a little while, in this crime drama premiering Friday, Aug. 14, on Netflix. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“The Dark Knight

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

Rises,” 2012) stars as Frank, a cop who is out to stop the distribution of a dangerous new drug in New Orleans. However, this new drug does more than just make you feel like you have superpowers. For exactly five minutes after taking a pill, users have unpredictable, and occasionally lethal, superpowers. In order to save his city, Frank must team up with Robin (Dominique Fishback, “The Hate U Give,” 2018), a teenage drug dealer, and Art (Jamie Foxx, “Baby Driver,” 2017), whose daughter has been taken by the villainous men behind the drug. The rag-tag group goes to extreme lengths to

bring down the drug ring, even going as far as risking their lives by taking the drug themselves.

WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+ “The One and Only Ivan” (2020)

The beloved bestselling novel by Katherine Applegate comes to life on Disney+ on Friday, Aug. 14, in this combination live action-CGI film. Sam Rockwell (“Richard Jewell,” 2019) lends his voice to Ivan, a 400-pound silverback gorilla, who has spent the vast majority of his life in a mall circus being raised by Mack (Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad”), the circus’s ringleader. Ivan shares his enclosure with an elderly elephant named Stella (voiced by Angelina Jolie, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” 2019), a dog named Bob (voiced by Danny DeVito, “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”) and a variety of other animals. While they are all relatively happy, none of them have many memories of their lives before the circus. When a baby elephant named Ruby (voiced by Brooklynn Prince, “Home Before Dark”) is brought into the enclosure, Ivan begins to think more and more about his past and the family he scarcely remembers. The more Ivan remembers his long-lost family, the more he yearns for a life in the wild, free from captivity, and begins to plot his escape with his friends.

businessman P. T. Barnum, who is credited with making show business a global enterprise, joins the Disney+ lineup. Hugh Jackman (“Logan,” 2017) stars as Barnum, who grew up impoverished and wants to give his wife, Charity (Michelle Williams, “Fosse/Verdon”), and his two daughters the lifestyle he thinks they deserve. When he is fired from his job, Barnum takes a risk and purchases a wax museum in an effort to turn their fortunes around. He quickly realizes that he’ll need more than just wax figures to bring in business, and he decides to create a live show by recruiting social outcasts to perform, including a singing bearded woman (Keala Settle, “Ricki and the Flash,” 2015) and a Black trapeze artist (Zendaya, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” 2017). As his troupe of performers gains positive traction, they are also judged by society’s elite, who call them a freak show and nothing more. In an effort to get approval from high society, Barnum convinces the playwright Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron, “Baywatch,” 2017) to partner with him. But, as the circus grows, so do Barnum’s ambitions, and he soon finds himself neglecting his family and his troupe in order to support an upand-coming opera singer (Rebecca Ferguson, “Doctor Sleep,” 2019).

His plans for normalcy quickly go out the window when Luc (Crispin Glover, “American Gods”), a psychotic hired gun, comes looking to avenge his brother who died on the job that got Red locked up. Now, Red must protect his family from Luc, who will stop at nothing to get his revenge.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME “World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji”

spending two years in prison, Red (Luke Bracey, “The Best of Me,” 2014), a safecracker, has been released and is thrilled to be finally getting back to life with his wife, Chloe (Nina Dobrev, “The Vampire Diaries”), and his daughter, Bea (newcomer Ella Ryan Quinn). Intent on getting back to normal with his family, Red reaches out to his old partner, Leroy (Clé Bennett, “The Man in the High Castle”), who has been holding on to the $500,000 in untraceable bonds

Celebrity survivalist Bear Grylls (“Man vs. Wild”) launches his new adventure competition series this Friday, Aug. 14, on Prime. Described as a combination of the popular series “Survivor,” “The Amazing Race” and “The Challenge,” Grylls’ new series follows 66 teams from all over the world as they take on an 11-day adventure. As they cross multiple countries, they are faced with many challenges, from paddle boarding and rock climbing to mountain biking and whitewater rafting. Each team varies in age and level of experience, and while every team wants the glory of winning the race, for many it’s just as much about proving that they can make it to the finish line. Billed as “the most epic global adventure race ever attempted,” the entirety of this show’s freshman season will be available to stream starting Friday.

Clarke faces final battle in seventh season of ‘The 100’

I n the sci-fi genre, the possibilities are seemingly endless. Even so, some sci-fi series push the boundaries of the human imagination further than others. One such series is back with a new episode this week as it continues its bittersweet final season.

Eliza Taylor (“Neighbours”) stars as Clarke Griffin, a young woman struggling to ensure the survival of the human race after a nuclear apocalypse, in a new episode of “The 100,” airing Wednesday, Aug. 12, on CW. For the past seven seasons, she’s rallied her people against ruthless humans, powerful AI, nuclear threats and more in the sciencefiction drama geared towards young adults.

Based on the book series of the same name by Kass Morgan, “The 100” premiered midseason in March 2014 on CW. In the beginning, the post-apocalyptic drama told the story of the last remaining humans who had fled Earth following a massive planet-wide nuclear disaster. After being exiled on an orbiting space habitat called the Ark for 97 years, leaders realized that life support was failing and they needed to act quickly or everyone would die. Desperate, they sent 100 juvenile delinquents to the planet’s surface to determine whether it could support life.

Clarke was one of those delinquents. Unfortunately, not all of the 100 would-be colonizers saw eye to eye, and they quickly divided into factions. While Clarke and her friend Wells (Eli Goree, “Riverdale”) were determined to find a way to survive and save the others still in space, a group led by rebel Bellamy (Bob Morley, “Home and Away”) conspired to make the Ark residents think they were dead. His allies included his sister, Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos, “Hunt to Kill,” 2010), and other radicals. However, the threat of Grounders — survivors of the nuclear apocalypse who had been living on Earth all along — soon forced the warring delinquents together

against common enemies while the other humans in space made the difficult decision to return to the habitat on the Ark.

To say that the plotlines have changed over the years would be an understatement. Clarke, Bellamy and the others have since faced imprisonment by people who experimented on them, an uprising within their ranks, powerful artificial intelligence bent on “solving” the problem of human overpopulation, a new nuclear apocalypse, a 125-year space journey in cryosleep, life on another planet and mysterious new cultlike groups.

As for what’s next, only time will tell. Luckily for fans, at least they’ll have a full final season to enjoy. While in March 2020, Warner Bros. shut down production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the cast and crew had managed to finish filming Season 7, according to writer Kim Shumway (“Wisdom of the Crowd”), who tweeted about the show’s wrap in March.

News of the show’s final scenes is surely disappointing for fans, but the saga may live on in a prequel series. In October 2019, it was announced that “The 100” showrunner Jason Rothenberg was developing a prequel, which would be introduced in a so-called “backdoor pilot,” an episode of a current series that introduces the premise and characters of a new series. The episode, entitled “Anaconda,” aired on CW on Wednesday, July 8, and attracted plenty of buzz from loyal fans for its flashback to how everything began. Set 97 years before the events of the first season of “The 100,” “Anaconda” picked up hours before the disaster that decimated Earth. Iola Evans (“Carnival Row”) stars as Callie Cadogan, the estranged daughter of “The 100” villain Bill Cadogan (John Pyper-Ferguson, “The Last Ship”). Erica Cerra (“Eureka”) reprised her role as Becca, the scientist who created the AI known as A.L.I.E. Becca had previously appeared in Seasons 3 - 5 of “The 100.” The backdoor pilot also featured Adain Bradley (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) as Cal-

lie’s brother, Reese, and Leo Howard (“Kickin’ It”) as rebel activist August. As of press time, the prequel series had not been ordered, despite a positive fan and critical reaction.

So much has changed throughout the past seven seasons of “The 100,” but some fan support for the series persists. Much like the number of the original 100 delinquents has dwindled over the

years, so have the ratings. Viewership has been on a steady decline for the past six seasons. However, the show still draws positive reviews from critics and fans. As a whole, it has earned a 93% approval rating on the popular review aggregator site rottentomatoes.com. The show landed at No. 36 on Rolling Stone’s list of 40 Best Science Fiction TV Shows of All Time in 2016.

Over the years, “The 100” has earned its fair share of attention from the awards circuit as well. In 2014, it was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects. The show has been nominated for multiple Teen Choice Awards and Saturn Awards, snagging the Saturn statuette for Best Youth-Oriented Series in 2015. More recently, “The 100” was nominated for a Saturn

Award for Best Science Fiction Television Series in 2019. Such accolades are likely bittersweet for the show’s cast and crew, who have poured their hearts into the series for years. With only episodes left before the end of the series, catch up with Clarke, Octavia and the others and watch the saga unfold in a new episode of “The 100,” airing Wednesday, Aug. 12, on CW.
