BAXTER — With overdose deaths increasing exponentially in Minnesota over the past few years, Essentia Health is continuing its work to ease some of the roadblocks to care. The latest data from the Minnesota Department of Health show Minnesota went from 342 opioidinvolved overdose deaths in 2018 to 978 in 2021. BRAINERD — To chlorinate or not to chlorinate. That is the question Brainerd Public Utilities officials are grappling with. In the weeks after a water boil advisory had residents buying bottled water and boiling their tap water before consuming it, BPU Commission members have to decide whether chlorination efforts will continue. Take a look at what’s going on for the 2023-24 school year BY TOM FRAKI Echo Journal PEQUOT LAKES — The Pequot Lakes School District is entering the new school year with enrollment estimates slightly higher than the previous year’s estimates. While the estimates are up to a little more than 1,800 students, it is difficult to pin down exact numbers for students coming to the district. “Student enrollment changes daily,” Superintendent Kurt Stumpf said in an email, “with some students moving away and some moving to the district.” As Pequot Lakes Schools continue to grow, staff and administrators are optimistic about the prospects of the upcoming year.

“We’re excited about all the new kids joining our campus, and the families experiencing what it means to be a Patriot, because I believe it’s very special.”

Creating unique personal dining experiences is what it is all about. Chef Peter Lowe worked his magic. “Block North takes pride in serving craft food served alongside craft beer; it defines us,” says Rich Courtemanche (owner/brewer). Block North opened in 2019 in downtown Aitkin with a unique menu, wood fired grill, onsite brewery, custom drinks and daily features. The marriage of great food and great beer has allowed Block North to flourish. It is the attention to the details and the desire to provide that special dining experience for every customer. As an example, Block North does not have a separate gluten free menu instead nearly the entire menu is available gluten free. It is just another example of how Chef Peter and the staff of Block North take it up another notch. Block North is open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and FridaySaturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed Sundays and major holidays. We are located one block north of the only stoplight in Aitkin. risty Miller strives for baked goods just like Grandma used to make. Her family has owned the bakery since January 2021 and it is a family business. Kristy is the lead baker. Ami Miller, Kristy’s daughter, is the store front manager and they now also offer daily lunch specials and event catering from Kristy’s husband, Chef Brian Chaffee. After taking over Pine River Bakery in January, Miller and her family have been welcomed into the community with open arms. “It’s so great that we have been embraced by the Pine River community since we took over,” she said. “Pine River has just been amazing and our customers have been amazing.” Among the bakery’s specialty items are doughnuts and bread made fresh every day and homemade soups available for lunch. Customer service and high-quality products are the two keys for Miller and her family to run a successful bakery. They try each item before setting it out for customers to ensure everything tastes good and like it’s straight from Grandma’s kitchen.

The signature tequila burrito — with steak, chicken, shrimp, peppers, onions, tomatoes, beans and rice — is one of the restaurant’s standout dishes, along with the steaming hot molcajete, complete with steak, pork chops, grilled chicken

Open in Baxter since 2008, El Tequila has been voted the city’s best restaurant for four contests in a row. Originally located on the north edge of Baxter on Audubon Way, the restaurant moved to the old Olive Garden building near the intersection of Highway 371 and Glory Road in 2019 and has reaped the benefits of the prime location and supportive community ever since. “We have a really good community here, and they support us, so we’re really grateful for them,” Damian said. “We appreciate them.”

opened Jack Pine Brewery in January of 2013 to bring my passion for great, locally produced, beer to the Brainerd lakes area. Being the first brewery in the area since prohibition, I didn’t know what to expect. The community quickly caught on to the idea of a local brewery taproom and we became a social hub even in our humble beginnings in the Baxter Industrial Park. As the brewery grew, so did our team of wonderful people. Within a few short years, Jack Pine outgrew its original space and relocated to the north side of Baxter, just off 371. The much-needed upgrade expanded our production capacity, allowing us to grow not only our taproom selection, but also our distribution footprint. The larger taproom with outdoor patio has become a favorite to both locals and visitors alike. What really sets us apart, however, is our people. The recent remodel is the latest in a series of expansions over the years. The menu is chef-driven with made from scratch recipes dominating. We mix, proof, bake and slice the bread in our kitchen. The family owned and operated business describes itself on Google as a place whose menu sets itself apart from “your average up-north restaurant.” From lobster roll sliders to Sunday brunch menu donut burger, the menu is sure to have something for everyone. “We are known for our burgers, but we have more to offer,” Cekalla said. “We have a chef-driven menu made from scratch recipes, which feature in-season food options.” Croft Kitchen and Bar was chosen the “Best Crosby/Ironton Restaurant” in the 2023 Best of voting. “Being selected as the best Crosby/ Ironton restaurant was amazing,” Cekalla said. “We are so happy that the Brainerd lakes area is enjoying our menu and service. What sets them apart, McNaughton said, is they consistently use fresh products and most of their food is made from scratch. “So it makes it all worth it,” she said. “Shane (Mudek) requires and keeps a high level of quality on everything that we order in and everything that we make. And he has taught the staff how to treat our customers well.” McNaughton, the Mudek family and the entire staff at Riverside Inn thanked the voters for their support, and look forward to serving them all soon.

dentifiable by the large wooden pirate ship and crows of people putting along the greens when the weather is especially nice, Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf is this year’s Best Mini Golf in the Brainerd lakes area. General Manager Pete Peterson chalks it up to the dedication of his warm, friendly staff. “The devil’s in the details, as they say, and they try to make everything perfect for the customers,” Peterson said. Whether it’s the staff, the courses themselves for the popular love/hate relationship with the business’s iconic pirate ship hole, there’s something about Pirate’s Cove that keeps customers coming back year after year. Some customers say it’s the only place their teenage children willingly talk to them. “People just keep coming back,” Peterson said. And for that, he’s grateful. “It’s really all about them,” he said of the customers. “The fact that they spend their time with us, we love that.” And he also loves that people took the time to vote for Pirate’s Cove as No. 1 as the course nears its 30th anniversary after opening in 1994.

couldn’t believe it when Babe told me the news that I’ve been voted the Best Local Celebrity in the Brainerd lakes area for the fourth time. It is such an honor. I’ve been in this neck of the woods for over 70 years and I still love this lakes area and to find I’m still thought of as the No. 1 local celebrity among all the people who make this area a great place to live, warms this old lumberjack’s big heart. Babe and I continue to greet new friends as I’ve done for generations. It never gets old seeing the shock and smiles on the young faces when I call their names out loud when they visit me at my home at Paul Bunyan Land, 10 miles east of Brainerd on County Road 18. A family tradition passed down through the generations, thousands of locals and tourists visit me every summer, sitting on my boot and getting selfies taken with me. My image and namesake is found throughout the lakes area from Paul Bunyan State Trail to the outline of my boot prints to mark my former home in the Kohl’s parking lot to my statue at the Brainerd Chamber’s Hwy. 371 Welcome Center. Others may claim me as their hometown hero, but the Brainerd area is where my heart is. A big thank you to everyone who voted for me again this year. Babe and I may celebrate with some big flapjacks.

ildwedge Golf, Mini Golf, and Maze in Pequot Lakes has a lot to offer for family fun. This year is Wildwedge’s 20th anniversary. The Par 3 golf course is one of the state’s best and most scenic short courses with holes from 75-175 yards. The course has enough distance, sand and water to challenge experienced golfers without being intimidating to beginners. The miniature golf course is rated No. 1 in Minnesota by Tripadvisor and was designed by the owners. The “research team” consisted of the owners family and friends, four adults and five kids. We went to Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, home to almost 100 mini golf courses and collectively played more than 4,000 holes of mini golf, took pictures of ones we liked and went home and picked our favorites. We are the lakes area’s most challenging course that is great fun for the whole family! We’ve had amazing feedback on our mini golf course from all ages. The Mystery Maze was added in 2010 and is made from lumber from giant red pines from the owners grandma’s property in Crosslake, which were more than 100 years old but were knocked down by a storm. “The amazing maze is over 10,000 square feet of corners, pathways and dead-ends that add up to more than 1/3 mile of paths! You’ll be lost for a bit, laughing a lot and loving it! There is nothing like it in the whole Midwest!” Stop on over for “The Best Place for Summer Family Fun!”

he Fort Bar & Grill in Fort Ripley was voted Best Steakhouse in this year’s Best of the Brainerd Lakes contest, and co-owner/chef Josh Collins said he’s humbled and honored by the designation, especially considering how little advertising and social media the restaurant does. “There are a lot of good restaurants in this area and I am glad the people chose us,” Collins said. “I didn’t even really realize that we were nominated for anything so it was a bit of a surprise when we heard that we had won the Best Steakhouse.” Collins said he appreciates his customers’ loyalty, many of whom he and his staff are close to and know by name. “We treat everybody like family,” Collins said. In turn, Collins said Fort Steakhouse caters to its customer by making everything homemade and in-house, from the high-grade steaks he cuts at the restaurant, to about 60 soup recipes and everything in between. “That consistency and quality helps to keep prices down a little bit, too,” Collins said.

The wings are part of the menu at Dough Bros in Baxter and those orders typically include the restaurant’s woodfire pizza as well. The wings also come with ranch and blue cheese dressing, which are also made inhouse. The woodfire pizza offerings include the tried and true popular versions like sausage and pepperoni along with niche pizzas like a snail and mushroom pizza with goat cheese and truffle drizzle. There are 20 beers on tap and a small cocktail list and wine to go with the wings and anything else on the menu like the dill pickle warm cream cheese dip or artichoke dip and other appetizers. Pizzas are made to order with dough stretched by hand and diners can watch the cooking process. When Chris and Mike Foy decided to buy the former Boomers Pizza they named it as an homage to a woodfire pizza place, also owned by two brothers, which they visited during their trip to Ireland with their wives. The restaurant with its ‘90s theme decor is a nod to the former Movie Gallery that once was at the Baxter site. ayla Huber’s love of photography began when she was a small child. She’d take photos and document life and school days, waiting for the developed pictures to be returned so she could craft her scrapbooks. In 2012, she began doing the work professionally with a studio in Staples. In December of 2022, she opened her business on Oak Street in Brainerd, specializing in seniors, children and families. Huber wanted to do more than quote a price and provide digital photos that might never be printed. She consults with clients, sends them a questionnaire to get to know what their needs are and focuses on getting the photos they want. Then she sits down with them or meets via Zoom to pick their favorites and determine how they want them to be displayed. “I wanted to be a full-service photographer,” she said, adding she wanted to serve as a guide for people through the process, especially for people who may be seeking out a professional photographer for the first time. She also wanted to make sure they had both the digital photos and something they could hold in their hands for their efforts to make the process special. “I’m very thankful for everyone who has supported me since December, since I opened and everyone who voted for me,” Huber said. “I’m very grateful.”

Many good writers are leaving the trade. Writers like last year’s winner Chelsey Perkins. She was a big loss to the Brainerd Dispatch newsroom. One thing we’ve been able to do in the Dispatch sports department is to keep a very capable and inspired team in place with sports writer Conrad Engstrom and our three part-timers Joe Lindholm, who covers auto racing and Central Lakes College, and Joel and Maren Martin, who handle the phones for sports events we can’t get to. As a team, we’ve been together since I took over as the sports editor. Conrad has branched out into podcasts, which have become very popular. My role as an editor has increased to handle the Wadena Pioneer Journal sports department. If and when I do get a chance to cover an event or write a feature story, it’s something I enjoy and have passion for. We as a sports department wish we could do more. We wish we could be at every event and cover every big story. We do enjoy what we do and we do care about this area. Akila Hair Lab is different from other hair salons in the Brainerd lakes area in the fact that there are only two stylists in the salon doing hair. Sobiech and Sorenson said, “We have formed such close bonds with our clientele and stay consistent with booking out a couple months ahead of time. Because of that, we had to close our books to new clients back in 2019. We would both say that we excel in making our clientele look and feel their best!” The owners want to thank everyone who voted for them this year. They were shocked to win second place last year as it was only their third year being open. Akila Hair Lab just opened up two rooms in their salon as they are looking for estheticians, lash technicians, advanced skin practices, etc., to grow their business. “To win first place this year with only four years open under our belt is such an amazing feeling, the owners said. “We have worked so hard to turn our dreams into a reality at such young ages. e are so honored to win this for the fifth contest year in a row. The Raboin & Francis Law Firm started Nov. 23, 1992, when John Raboin opened The Raboin Law Office. The office was located next to a local beauty salon and clients had to suffer through the “perm” smell from that business to get up the stairs to the office. The firm used furniture from a hotel that went out of business and had particle-board bookshelves for walls. On Oct. 1, 1994, the firm moved to a building they constructed on Woida Road in Baxter. Over the years, the firm has grown and is now one of the busiest personal injury firms in north central Minnesota. John Raboin remains active in the community. During the worst of the pandemic, John helped form the Full Tummies program, which helped feed hungry people on weekends in the Brainerd lakes area. The program lasted for 36 weeks and over 10,000 lunches were provided. He focuses his practice on personal injury and employment law. Michelle Francis joined the firm in 2012 and quickly became an involved member of the Brainerd lakes community. Michelle became a partner Jan. 1, 2017, starting The Raboin & Francis Law Firm. She is also very active in the community and currently chairs the STRIVE Committee for the Brainerd Noon Rotary Club. She has a thriving practice focused on personal injury, workers’ compensation and Social Security disability.
