Much like the red dirt that remains on your boots after a trek to the top of Miner’s Mountain, our story will leave tracks on your soul. Our tale was forged by the sweat, sacrifice, and toil of the men and women who uncovered the minerals that built the backbone of this great region.

Trail Map ............................................ 16

The Cuyuna Iron Range produced over 100 million tons of high-manganese ore during WWI and WWII. Over generations, the terrain and economy of the Cuyuna Lakes experienced a boom and bust as the mining era ended, and again with the historic Scorpion snowmobile industry. Those who remained had a vision of hope, and it was decided our story would be one of resilience.

Snowmobile Trail Map ................... 26

The barren mine pits that remained were reclaimed by nature to create pristine lakes now stocked full of trout and brimming with possibilities. Trails worthy of global acclaim now wind through this beautiful land we are so proud to call our backyard. So, get off the beaten path and come explore. This is a place for family – a regional hub for healthcare and an excellent school district that embraces technology. We’re proud to be a destination for tomorrow’s leaders and entrepreneurs. We welcome you during any season to experience how our area is thriving. There are very few times in life that you can be part of a story this big in a region this small.

About Our Waters

The best kept secret in Minnesota is Cuyuna Country. Our pristine lakes provide excellent fishing for a large variety of species, as well as unique angling opportunities for trout and trophy pike.

SERPENT LAKE Serpent Lake is a beautiful body of clear, fresh water covering 1,116 acres and is approximately 65 feet deep at its deepest point. Around 9-plus miles of shoreline amid birch, pine, oak, and other towering trees. More than 250 homes and cabins hug its meandering shoreline. Located between the cities of Crosby (on its western end) and Deerwood (on the east), Serpent is home to walleye, northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappies, and other fish which attract anglers yearround. At the lake’s largest public access point, Crosby Memorial Park, is a large, colorful serpent statue named Kahnah’bek (the Ojibwa name for Serpent). It measures 20 feet high and 25 feet long and weighs 2,500 pounds. There are rumors of the lake’s namesake from the supposed mythical sea creature lurking in the waters.

MINE LAKES The mine lakes are famous for trout. But, if they are not cooperating, try fishing for northern pike. Submerged stands of 10 | Cuyuna Lakes Visitor Guide 2022

timber shelter trophy pike, some pushing 30 pounds. The sunken trees also provide cover for hungry small and largemouth bass. Spinner baits are a great choice because the water does not have a lot of weeds and the bait can be worked through the stands of trees and stumps. A panfish supper awaits if you stay near the underwater trees during low light.

NATURAL LAKES Tired of fishing amidst jet skiers and power boats? Experience the solitude on our natural lakes where walleye, northern and largemouth bass are the main targets. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon slab crappies or big bluegills. Venture to larger waters for that trophy muskie. Launch your boat at the many public access points. If you are looking for peace and quiet, bring a canoe or kayak and relax on one of the many small lakes with limited access. Grab a map, locate a back road, and find your own “honey hole” on one of our tranquil lakes.

UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER The nearby Mississippi River, with excellent populations of walleye and smallmouth bass, is navigable under normal conditions with a motorized boat, but some prefer to float it in a canoe or kayak. The stretch from Aitkin to Merrifield is both beautiful and rewarding. Catfish populations are booming, and muskies are present here with trophycaliber fish available. Cuyuna Rolling Hills just east of Deerwood offers 18 holes of challenging golf while Ruttger’s off Highway 6 by Bay Lake has an 18-hole course along with a nine-hole executive course. Also try Emily Greens, a fun and affordable 18-hole

course carved through the Northwoods at 39966 Refuge Road in Emily. The course’s 17th hole features Minnesota’s largest green, spanning a whopping 16,750 square feet. Check out Traditions Mini Golf Course at Cuyuna Falls, an 18-hole premier course featuring a waterfall, fountain ponds, and breathtaking landscaping. Holes average

40 feet in length, with many holes bordering water hazards. Music plays throughout the entire course. Traditions also offers water wars, a human foosball arena and batting cages.

There now stands a recreated depot picnic shelter. The park has a historical marker honoring Minnesota’s Cuyuna Range. A large iron sculpture of a train is also in the park area. There are other waymarks in the park and an abundance of photo fun for the kids and family. The park features a giant leaping deer made of fiberglass. The deer sports blaze orange during hunting season and is then decked out with a red nose during the Christmas holidays.

Cuyuna Country State Recreational Area Mountain bike enthusiasts will have 27 miles of new trails to ride at the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area by the spring of 2023. New trail construction at the area’s Sagamore Unit is scheduled to begin in late April and last through the fall of 2022. Located on the southwestern edge of the complex, the Sagamore Unit expansion will feature a new trailhead facility and trails that range from easy to very difficult. The unit will include the system’s first trails designed for users of adapted bikes (three- and four-wheel handcycles). “This next wave of expansion of the trail system builds on the work started last year on the Mahnomen Unit,” said Nicholas Statz, Cuyuna Country mountain bike trail technician for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “All of this development is a result of the broad support from the business and riding community, the Cuyuna SRA Citizens Advisory Council, and the hard work of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew, which helps

maintain the trail system.” Construction should not require the closure of existing trails outside of the construction area. Visitors may see and hear construction equipment in the area and are asked to obey all closure signs. The public water access on Sagamore Mine Lake will remain open during construction.

The Mahnomen Unit expansion project features four challenging new gravity flow trails, three of which will be connected by a backcountry trail intended to provide riders a sense of remoteness and adventure. New trails in this unit will range from more difficult intermediate to very difficult (expert).

AREA ATTRACTIONS

Drive Along America’s Scenic Byway SCENIC BYWAY

The Cuyuna Range is along The Great River Road National Scenic Byway that follows the course of the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The Great River Road is a wellmarked series of different roads and highways that roughly follow the winding course of the Mississippi River. Travelers will find white signs displaying a green pilot’s wheel logo. The symbol denotes which roads are part of the designated route that was selected for its natural, cultural, historical, recreational, and scenic properties. All along the Great River Road, visitors find interesting things to see and do, including many river-related attractions and designated interpretive centers. The Cuyuna Range is no exception. Travelers can drive a short portion of the byway to experience some of the numerous amenities the area must offer. Learn more at www.mnmississippiriver.com.

Winter Adventures Cuyuna Country has miles of fat tire biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling trails waiting for you.

CUYUNA COUNTRY STATE RECREATION AREA The area features more than 5,000 acres of forests and lakes. Opportunities abound for biking, hiking, ice fishing, snowshoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling. Access the area from several places in Crosby or Ironton. Check with the DNR for maps and the latest updates, 218-772-3690 or www.dnr.state.mn.us 24 | Cuyuna Lakes Visitor Guide 2022

Larson Lakes has miles of trails through thick forests, a shelter, and holds snow later in the season than any other groomed course in the area. Ski trails are being groomed by the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club.

WOLF LAKE TRAILS This trail system offers 9 km of beginner through expert trails with good signage for each. Skate ski through old-growth pine or classic ski along a ridge overlooking marshland or glacial kettles. Some trails are single tracked while others are double. Located south and west of Crosby/Ironton on Nelson Road, these trails are maintained and groomed as part of the Crow Wing County Park System.

History

DEERWOOD CELEBRATES 150TH ANNIVERSARY The City of Deerwood is celebrating its 150th Anniversary (Sesquicentennial) in 2022 highlighted by several of events Thursday, July 7, through Saturday, July 9. Established in 1872, the city was originally named Withington but was renamed Deerwood a few years later because of confusion with the City of Worthington in southern Minnesota. Deerwood is the second oldest city in Crow Wing County only behind Brainerd which was established one year earlier in 1871. Preliminary plans for the Sesquicentennial activities are to begin with a food event Thursday, July 7th, followed by a program at the historic Auditorium that will include the enshrinement of a time capsule. Friday will provide opportunities for tours of historic sites capped off by an evening of entertainment and food. The biggest day of the celebration will be on Saturday beginning with a morning parade followed by games for kids and adults in the area of the splash pad park and Auditorium along with street entertainment and local food vendors. The day’s activities will conclude with a street dance and fireworks display.

MILFORD MINE MEMORIAL PARK

Milford Mine Memorial Park features natural and man-made habitat that was transformed into a recreation area to be enjoyed by area residents and visitors. It is a humble attempt to preserve the memory of the 41 miners killed on February 5, 1924, in underground tunnels after a nearby lake flooded the mine. Located in Crosby, west of Highway 6 and south of County Highway 30, between Island and Milford lakes. Visit http://crowwing.us/ DocumentCenter/View/6468 for more information.

CUYUNA IRON RANGE HERITAGE NETWORK Research the history of the Cuyuna Range or trace your family heritage with the assistance of knowledgeable staff. Historical books are available for purchase. Located in the basement of Crosby’s Unity Bank on Main Street. Call 218-545-1166 or visit www.cuyunahistory.org for more information.

CUYUNA RANGE HISTORICAL MUSEUM This museum is in the old Soo Line Depot at 101 First Street N.E. in Crosby and

features many artifacts of local history. Named in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” as the only depot in the world where the trains came in but never went past. Call 218546-6178 or visit www.cuyunahistory.org for more information.

MAN HIGH The first small step of manned space exploration was launched from the Portsmouth Mine in Crosby on August 19, 1957. Near the trail parking area overlooking the lake is signage depicting the adventure. Air Force Major Dr. David Simons rose above the earth 101,516 feet to become the first successful manned space flight in history. Dr. Simons provided the scientific research that would one day enable Neil Armstrong to step

onto the surface of the moon and declare, “One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”

TRAIL-A-SLED AND SCORPION SNOWMOBILES In 1959, the communities of Crosby and Ironton were in decline, still reeling after losing hundreds of iron ore mining jobs. Three men had come together, not to build a snowmobile powerhouse, but to simply survive. Incorporated in 1959, Trail-A-Sled, Inc. quickly grew to elite status among snowmobile manufacturers during the 1960s when rising public demand for these machines was creating an entirely new industry. Along the way, Trail-A-Sled, Inc. and its

History subsequent firm Scorpion, Inc. built an industry-leading reputation for quality, dependability, and design, becoming the second largest domestic manufacturer of snowmobiles and a leading employer in central Minnesota’s beautiful Cuyuna Lakes region. By March of 1978 the firm was sold to long-time rival Arctic Enterprises. The Crosby-Ironton facility was closed in March 1980. Nowadays, Scorpion snowmobiles continue to capture the imagination of vintage hobbyists throughout the world, and the annual Scorpion Homecoming gathering attracts hundreds of enthusiasts to Crosby, the birthplace of Trail-A-Sled, Inc. and Scorpion snowmobiles.

CUYUNA COUNTRY STATE RECREATION AREA Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is named for Cuyler Adams and Una, his Saint Bernard. Adams noticed deflections in his compass as he surveyed the land,

and went on to discover iron ore in the area in 1904. By 1909 approximately 2,000 drill holes had been completed and the new town sites of Cuyuna, Crosby, Ironton, Manganese, Riverton, and Trommald were established. Twenty to thirty mines operated in the area during the mining boom of World Wars I and II, with nearly twenty mines still operational in the early 1950s. Foreign competition and taconite mining on the Mesabi Range caused a nearly complete shutdown of the Cuyuna area in the early 1960s. Abandoned mining operations left behind a landscape dotted with mining pits 100to 525-feet deep, and rock stockpiles 200feet high. Through the efforts of the Iron Range Resources Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB), Crow Wing County, local governments, two joint powers boards, volunteer groups, and the Department of Natural Resources, the area has become an outdoor recreation attraction and officially became a Minnesota State Recreation Area in 1993.

Living in the Cuyuna Lakes area for around 20 years, we have come to love the community for who we are and who we are becoming. We have seen healthy growth in our schools, medical facilities, and churches, foundations for a strong place to live. It has been a DELIGHT to see how the locals have embraced new businesses and ideas. It has also been wonderful being a part of the community who loves and supports each other in times of need. It just feels like “home” and for this we are grateful to live here!!!
