“The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” the sixth series in the Walking Dead franchise, premieres Sunday, Sept. 10, on AMC and AMC+. Norman Reedus (“The Boondock Saints,” 1999) reprises his role as Daryl, who “washes ashore in France” and tries to find his way home. “Virgin River” - Season 5, Part 1
The town is rocked by a shocking series of events when “Virgin River” returns to Netflix with Season 5, debuting its first 10-episode installment Thursday, Sept. 7. Season 5, Part 2 is set to release Thursday, Nov. 30, with two special holiday episodes. Now firmly settled in Virgin River, nurse practitioner Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge, “This Is Us”), who moved to the small Northern California town in Season 1, is pushed to make a big decision about her future at the clinic while her pregnancy unexpectedly sparks an emotional connection to her past this season. Meanwhile, Jack (Martin Henderson, “Grey’s Anatomy”) faces his own demons and, of course, Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley, “Sullivan’s Crossing”), in an attempt to prove himself to Mel, as Doc (Tim Matheson, “Hart of Dixie”) and Hope (Annette O’Toole, “Halt and Catch Fire”) must find solace and those around them when their identities are thrown into question. Season 5 also features “surprising new relationships, a shocking breakup, a difficult court trial, a heartbreaking goodbye, and a wildfire that threatens the town, bringing some people of Virgin River together while tearing others apart” (per Netflix). Based on the book series of the same name by Robyn Carr, “Virgin River” was created for television by Sue Tenney (“Good Witch”). The series also stars Benjamin Hollingsworth (“Code Black”), Colin Lawrence (“Riverdale”), Sarah Dugdale (“In the Shadow of the Moon,” 2019), Zibby Allen (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Marco Grazzini (“Kim’s Convenience”), Mark Ghanimé (“Helix”)and Teryl Rothery (“Arrow”).
“Predators” - Season 1
The visually-stunning nature docuseries, “Predators,” makes its way into the Netflix streaming lineup Wednesday, Sept. 6. A five-part series, “Predators” follows the lives of five different predator species around the world as they work to survive in their ever-changing environments. Looking at cheetahs, polar bears, lions, pumas and wild dogs, the series allows viewers to experience life through the eyes of these outstanding creatures as these powerful hunters fight to maintain their dominance. Narrated by Tom Hardy (“The Dark Knight Rises,” 2012), “Predators” comes from production company True To Nature and is executive produced by Wendy Darke (“Nature’s Microworlds”) and Vanessa Coates (“Springwatch”).
“The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022)
Nominated for nine awards — including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay — at the 95th Academy Awards, the star-studded and highly acclaimed film, “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022) will be available for all to watch, as it makes it streaming debut, Monday Sept. 4, on Hulu. The film acts as the second collaboration between writer-director Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” 2017) and stars Colin Farrell (“The Lobster,” 2015) and Brendan Gleeson (“Calvary,” 2014), who previously worked together on McDonagh’s 2008 directorial debut, “In Bruges.” Set on a remote, fictional island settled off the west coast of Ireland during the 1920s, the story follows as the Irish Civil War draws towards its end, and friends Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson) face an impasse after one abruptly ends their relationship, unleashing a series of drastic consequences for both. What started as a lifelong partnership quickly devolves into an unspeakable rivalry, one that just may separate them forever.
“The Menu” (2022)
Dinner is served. Starring Ralph Fiennes (“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” 2014), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) and Nicholas Hoult (“The Great”), 2023’s most delicious horror comedy, “The Menu,” will be available to stream on Hulu as of Sunday, Sept. 3.
Written by Seth Reiss (“The Onion”) and Will Tracy (“Succession”), this Mark Mylod (“Game of Thrones”) directed feature follows as food-loving Tyler Ledford (Hoult) brings his date, Margot Mills (Taylor-Joy), to an exclusive restaurant on a private island – a restaurant owned by celebrity chef Julian Slowik (Fiennes) – in search of a life-changing meal. The duo are joined by food critic Lillian Bloom (Janet McTeer, “Me Before You,” 2016), wealthy regulars, beasts of business and movie stars, each looking to experience what Slowik’s unique fare has to offer. As each course is served, it becomes clearer and clearer, however, that the chef’s meal may be far more than decadent — it’s deadly as well. “The Menu” also stars Hong Chau (“The Whale,” 2022), Paul Adelstein (“Intolerable Cruelty,” 2003), John Leguizamo (“Moulin Rouge!,” 2001), Aimee Carrero (“The Last Witch Hunter,” 2015) and more.
“I Am Groot” - Season 2
The galaxy’s most mischievous toddler is back to stealing hearts in Season 2 of “I Am Groot,” premiering Wednesday, Sept. 6, on Disney+. A photorealistic animated series of shorts, Season 2 follows the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy franchise character, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel, “F9: The Fast Saga,” 2021), as “this time, Baby Groot finds himself exploring the universe and beyond aboard the Guardians’ spaceships, coming face-to-face — or nose-to-nose — with new and colorful creatures and environments” (Per Disney+). Throughout five new original shorts, Baby Groot “[explores] his glory days growing up — and getting into trouble — among the stars” (Disney+). Expanding on the original Marvel character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the series is directed and written by Kirsten Lepore (“Hi Stranger,” 2016), who executive produces the series alongside Kevin Feige (“Black Panther,” 2018), Louis D’Esposito (“Iron Man,” 2008), Victoria Alonso (“Avengers: End Game,” 2019) and Brad Winderbaum (“Thor: Love and Thunder,” 2022).
“The Little Mermaid” (2023)
Enjoy life under the sea with Disney’s live-action remake of its 1989 hit animated film, “The Little Mermaid,” available to stream on Disney+, Wednesday, Sept. 6. Loosely based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, “The Little Mermaid tells the story of Ariel (Halle Bailey, “grownish”), a spirited young mermaid who dreams of grand adventures. However, as the youngest and most defiant of King Triton’s (Javier Bardem, “No Country for Old Men,” 2007) daughters, Ariel finds herself caught under her father’s strict rule. When a trip to the surface leads her to fall for the handsome Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King, “World on Fire”), Ariel makes a deal with an evil sea witch named Ursula (Melissa McCarthy, “God’s Favorite Idiot”) in order to experience life on land. When things don’t exactly go to plan, Ariel finds her life and her father’s kingdom in jeopardy. Directed by Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” 2002) and featuring a screenplay by David Magee (“Life of Pi,” 2012).
“Sitting in Bars with Cake” (2023)
Inspired by true events and based on the cookbook of the same name by Audrey Shulman (“Love, Inheritance and Lunch,” 2019), the new rom-com “Sitting in Bars with Cake” premieres on Prime Video, Friday, Sept. 8. Young and doing their best to navigate life in Los Angeles, Corinne (Odessa A’zion, “Hellraiser,” 2022), the ultimate extrovert, convinces her best friend, Jane (Yara Shahidi, “grown-ish”), an introverted and extremely talented home baker, to commit to a year of baking cakes and bringing them to bars — called “cakebarring” — in order to meet new people and work on building up confidence. As the friends work their way through L.A.’s vibrant nightlife scene, “Corinne receives a life-altering diagnosis, and the pair face a challenge unlike anything they’ve experienced before,” in a madcap adventure that is “a moving celebration of female friendship, forging identity and finding joy in the most unexpected places” (per Prime Video). With a screenplay written by Shulman, “Sitting in Bars with Cake” is directed by Trish Sie (“Pitch Perfect 3,” 2017) and executive produced by Shahidi, Janet G. Knutsen (“Rizzoli & Isles”) and Teri Simpson (“Carrie Pilby,” 2016). The film also stars Bette Midler (“Beaches,” 1988), Ron Livingston (“Band of Brothers”), Martha Kelly (“Baskets”), Maia Mitchell (“The Fosters”), Charlie Morgan Patton (“80 For Brady,” 2023), Simone Recasner (“The Big Leap”), Rish Shah (“Ms. Marvel”), Aaron Dominguez (“Only Murders in the Building”), Will Ropp (“The Fallout,” 2021), Adina Porter (“The 100”) and Navid Negahban (“Homeland”).
