Lovers in a dangerous time Period drama ‘Beecham House’ airs on PBS

Opulent period dramas have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with TV series such as “Downton Abbey” and “The Crown” amassing loyal followings. Luckily for fans of the genre, one of the U.K.’s most buzzworthy period dramas has made its way across the pond to rivet American audiences.

Tom Bateman (“Cold Pursuit,” 2019) stars as John Beecham, a former British soldier with a mysterious past who moves into a mansion in Delhi in 1795 in “Masterpiece Classic: Beecham House,” airing Sunday, July 19, on PBS. He brings with him a biracial baby, causing a stir among the estate’s staff.

While many of Chadha’s past films focus on Indians living in England, “Beecham House” turns the tables on her usual MO to explore the life of an Englishman living in India who is determined to make a name for himself as a trader while living a quiet, peaceful life with his family.

“Masterpiece” executive Rebecca Eaton had high praise for the miniseries in a news release announcing that it would be airing on the PBS flagship series.

“I haven’t seen a series as visually sumptuous as ‘Beecham House’ in a long time,” she said. “This is a new time and place for our audience ... India in 1795, before the Raj. There is love and passion, too, and a storyline full of deepening mystery.”

In the aforementioned interview, Chadha made it clear that she was determined to film at least part of the series in India, explaining that the setting couldn’t really be duplicated anywhere else.

After getting his start on stage as a boy, Suter appeared in films such as “Maleficent” (2014) and “Fall

Richards began acting as a child as well and landed the role of Lyra in “The Golden Compass” (2007) at the age of 13. She was cast in the British teen drama “Skins,” as well as the TV movie “Dustbin Baby” (2008) and the fantasy film “The Secret of Moonacre” (2008).

In addition to the Bollywood films “Besharam” (2013) and “Hawaizaada” (2015), Sharda starred opposite Nicole Kidman in the Hollywood film “Lion” (2016) and appeared in the Australian medical drama “Pulse.”

The daughter of two actors, Pilgaonkar began her onscreen career at the age of 5 in the Hindu television series “Tu Tu Main Main.” She worked on the French film “Un plus une” (2015) before making her Bollywood debut in “Fan” (2016).

Head back to the year 790 when this Norwegian comedy series returns for a third season Wednesday, July 22, on Netflix. While Vikings are usually best suited for dramas, this series manages to balance the typical bloody and serious storylines with witty and well-timed humor. The first two seasons follow the life of Chieftain Olav (Henrik Mestad, “Okkupert”) and his wife, Hildur (Marianne Saastad Ottesen, “Lilyhammer”), as they handle day-to-day life in their village of Norheim. Together they deal with a rival tribe led by Jarl Varg (Jon Oilgarden, “Helt Perfekt”), conflicts with neighboring villages, and a Roman slave (Trond Fausa, “Neste Sommer”), who constantly tries to modernize their way of living but only causes chaos. Despite entering their third season, the series is actually set to take viewers back in time for a prequel season that has been deemed “Season 0” and shows the origins of the characters.

Come one, come all, to the premiere of this animated family film Friday, July 24, on Netflix. John Krasinski (“The Office”) lends his voice to Owen Huntington, a man leading a boring life working in a dog biscuit company that keeps him so busy he barely sees his wife, Zoe (voiced by Emily Blunt, “A Quiet Place,” 2018), and his daughter. Life looks fairly bleak for Owen until he finds out that his mysterious uncle has

Muses aren’t just mythical beings of creativity and inspiration, sometimes they’re real people — John Lennon had Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney had Linda Eastman, Kurt Cobain had Courtney Love, I could go on and on. But the relationship between artist and muse can be quite tumultuous. The delicate nature of these relationships is explored when this documentary joins the Prime lineup on Sunday, July 19. “Words of Love” looks specifically at the relationship between legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and his muse, Marianne Ilhen. The pair met in the early ‘60s when Cohen was still just a poet and went to live on the Greek island Hydra, which was known for being filled with artists. With footage from old home movies and interviews, the film shows how their relationship changed from being a carefree island romance to more trying as Cohen discovered himself as a singer. Ilhen was the inspiration behind many of Cohen’s poems and songs, though the most notable is, of course, the 1967 hit

Based on the true story of William H. Pitsenbarger, don’t miss this amazing war film when it comes to Hulu on Tuesday, July 21. During the Vietnam War, Pitsenbarger (Jeremy Irvine, “Treadstone”) served as a U.S. Air Force pararescueman, saving more than 60 men, and on his last mission died in the field after choosing to stay behind and help his fellow soldiers rather than being taken to safety. Now, over 30 years later, Pitsenbarger’s best friend and partner on his final mission, Tom Tulley (William Hurt, “Goliath”), is requesting that Pitsenbarger be awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor. However, despite his heroic actions, the request can’t go through without the circumstances being investigated, and up-and-coming Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman (Sebastian Stan, “Avengers: Endgame,” 2019) is assigned to the case.
