Late Laughs

Conan: Conan O’Brien

This is my last night in Dallas, but I leave Texas with new friends, great memories and dangerously clogged arteries. I have eaten my body weight every night. I weigh myself

before each meal and ask for that much meat.

I got local news. Texas lawmakers have been asked to find a location to store high-level radioactive waste. Then someone said, “What about Oklahoma?”

Dallas was home to the first Six Flags theme park, but if you really want to be on a roller-coaster, you could just cheer for the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys are known as America’s team, meanwhile the Astros are known as definitely Houston’s team.

The Late Show: David Letterman

I get a quarterly book that contains a summary of surveys. In the most recent survey, scientists and doctors agree that a human being

Sudoku

cannot fake laughter, you are either laughing because it is funny, or not laughing because it is not funny.

If you have ever seen this program before, you are aware of the fact that you can’t fake comedy.

Today is Bill de Blasio’s birthday. You want to get him something? How about a carriage ride through the park?

It’s a chive!: Spike breathes life into kooky food combos

Whoever first thought of putting peanut butter and jelly together between two slices of bread was a culinary genius. Oh, and the person who figured out that chicken and waffles are a perfect combination, too.

There are some foods that just go together oh so well, and they’re not always combinations that you’d expect. Grabbing two wildly different foods and mashing them together is kind of like what Dr. Frankenstein did when he created his iconic monster, and Spike is taking that comparison to heart with “Frankenfood,” an exciting new series premiering with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, June 22.

“Frankenfood” will be traveling across the country looking for the most revolutionary new food combinations that local food innovators have come up with. Whether they’re old family recipes, interesting regional specialties or crazy hangover remedies, there’s nothing that the panel of judges won’t try out.

There’s a pretty cool prize on the line, too: the winner of each episode walks away with a cool $10,000 in cash and their bizarre food concoction on the menu of a local restau-

rant.

Local? You bet. “Frankenfood” will be swinging by New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Milwaukee, Austin, Dallas and more. Guest judges will be from the city represented, and with food tastes varying from region to region, they may be the deciding vote when weird and wacky flavors end up in front of the judges.

Joining the local judges are two juggernauts of the culinary world.

Josh Capon is no stranger to judging, having been a guest judge on the Food Network’s “Chopped” in the past, while Tony Luke Jr. is known worldwide as the king of cheese steaks.

So just what kinds of crazy culinary creations can this panel of judges expect to find set in front of them? Thoughts of cheesecake burgers, fried peanut butter and jelly fish sticks, gyro egg rolls and triple-decker pastrami doughnut sandwiches may not sound very appetizing (to most people, at least), but their creators sure think that these Franken-creations have what it takes to become the next big food fad.

Cover Story

I t looks like Bon Temps is going to war.

The not-so-sleepy small town in Louisiana has seen more than its fair share of death and drama throughout the last six seasons of HBO’s hit supernatural show “True Blood,” and you can be sure there’s plenty more to come as its seventh and final season kicks off Sunday, June 22, on the cabler.

It’s been a long winter for “True Blood” fans — or “Truebies,” as they’ve come to be known over the years. Based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the show has amassed a huge following, many of whom have been engrossed in the fictional town of Bon Temps since 2001, the year the first novel in the series, “Dead Until Dark,” was published. Last May, the 13th and final installment of the Sookie Stackhouse Novels was released, so there’s a sense of grim finality hanging about the final season of the show.

“True Blood” chronicles the exploits of the young, vivacious and telepathic small-town waitress Sookie Stackhouse. Oscar-winner Anna Paquin (“The Piano,” 1993) has earned a handful of Golden Globe nominations — and one win — for her portrayal of the feisty leading lady who finds herself living in a world filled with all manner of supernatural creatures as various social movements help those who have dwelt in the shadows reveal themselves to the masses. Having been able to hear the thoughts of others her whole life, Sookie knows what it is to be different and embraces this brave new world, even falling in and out of love with vampires and werewolves alike.

Season 6 was, as usual, a rollercoaster of action and emotion. While some beloved characters didn’t make it out alive (say it ain’t so, Terry!), most of the central cast is returning this year. The season 6 finale saw the demise of Warlow (Robert Kazinsky, “Pacific Rim,” 2013) and proceeded to jump ahead six months. As the episode closes, we learn that Sookie and hunky werewolf Alcide (Joe Man-

the government has abandoned the besieged residents of Bon Temps.

“They’re weaker and driven by a need to eat in a way that the vampires that we’ve come to know are not,” says executive producer Brian Buckner. “They have to drink human blood in larger quantities and more frequently than before ... they’re not going to be zombies. They’re far more organized and haven’t lost their mental capacity.”

Sam proposes a plan to combat these crazed vamps, what he calls a “monogamous living donor” program. In an effort to stop the spread of the virus (which humans can carry in their blood), Hep V negative humans will pair up with healthy vampires and feed them their blood when necessary. The human, in return, gets the protection of the vampire — an increasingly necessary luxury considering how many infected vamps are roaming

and viewers and show-runners alike are excited about the implications. In an interview with “EW,” Buckner said the following:

“Here’s my sincere hope: that we get to see more of everybody we love, because everybody is under the banner of fewer stories. The story is ‘for every human a vampire, for every vampire a human,’ and now that there’s a lesser need for separate plot and separate story development for every single character that we have, we’re actually going to get to spend more time with them. That’s my hope, that’s the motivation, and that’s where it’s all coming from.”

If you’re a Truebie, I already know what you’re thinking: “Great ... but what about ERIC?”

I’m happy to say that I have some good news for all the Eric Northman fans out there — showrunners have confirmed that he is returning for the show’s final season. The ancient Swede, played by the appropriately tall, blonde and Swedish Alexander Skarsgård (“Battleship,” 2012), was last seen lounging naked on a snowy moun-

tainside in Åre, Sweden, enjoying the solitude and mourning the loss of one of his own.

Warlow’s blood had allowed the vamps who drank it to walk in the sun without harm, but when Warlow is killed in Bon Temps, the effect of his blood is negated. Alone on his mountain at midday, Eric suddenly bursts into flames ... and that’s it. Quite a cliff to leave one of the show’s best loved characters hanging on.

Buckner assures fans that Skarsgård will return as a major part of season 7, but that Eric will not be “suddenly alive and well” as the season opens. Show-runners are tight-lipped beyond this admission, and even the teasers and trailers for the upcoming season shed no light on what has become of Eric.

They do, however, portend a dangerous new world for our favourite characters. “Is this war, Bill?” Sookie asks her vampire neighbor.

“Yes, I suppose it is.”

The wait is almost over. Tune in Sunday, June 22, as the final season of “True Blood” kicks off on HBO.
