DAY

TURTLE

WE

S NE

RA S

Nisswa Turtle Races celebrate their 57th year when the season kicks off Wednesday, June 3, at the downtown turtle track. Registration starts at 1 p.m. when you pay $5 to race a turtle and get your commemorative Turtle Race button. Racing gets underway at 2 p.m., no matter what the weather. These races traditionally draw hundreds of turtle racers from all over the country each week. The turtle track is located at the Chamber Welcome Center parking lot, along the Paul Bunyan State Trail in downtown Nisswa. Starting with the heat races, 20 racers at a time cheer as their turtles race for the finish line. The winner of each heat race receives prizes and a winner’s ribbon, and they get to race again for a chance to be the Grand Champion of the day. Not only does the Grand Champion win additional prizes, he or she gets a Turtle Race medal.

Season runs Wednesdays, June 3-Aug. 19 CE

SUMMER

Next, the specialty races begin. Anyone who has registered and has a Turtle Race button can participate in the following five specialty races: Resort Race (for those staying at a resort), Tiny Tots Race (for ages 5 years and under), Out of State/Out of Country Race, Grandparents Race and Locals Race. The Locals Race is highly competitive because these local racers have been racing turtles for their entire lives.

The specialty race winners receive ribbons and prizes, too. The Nisswa Turtle Races are a tradition for many families who visit the Brainerd lakes area each year. Kids of all ages race turtles, from babies to great-grandparents. The turtle wranglers and volunteers get a chance to race at the end of the specialty races as well. The turtle wranglers are from the local nonprofit Mounted Eagles Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. They help wrangle the turtles during the Nisswa Turtle Race season and then release the turtles back into their native habitat at the end of each racing season. Whether you’re a veteran turtle racer, a first-time racer, a spectator or cheerleader, the downtown Nisswa turtle track is the place to be at 2 p.m. Wednesdays through summer.

Annual patriotic event is Friday, July 3

The Fourth of July week brings parades, music, fireworks and all kinds of family fun to the Brainerd lakes area when thousands of visitors flock here to enjoy the lakes and many amenities. Nisswa hosts its annual Freedom Days Festival on July 3 every year, which falls on Friday in 2020. Activities throughout the day include Turtle Races, Water Wars, live music and a rotating list of other fun activities. Of course, the day’s biggest event is the Freedom Days Parade at 7 p.m. on Main Street. Spectators line both sides of Main Street to watch the parade with lots of floats, veterans groups, a high school marching band, clowns, local royalty, fire trucks, etc. It’s one of the best parades in the Brainerd lakes area. The Nisswa Freedom Days Parade is a favorite among spectators because not only is it at night when the hot July summer sun isn’t as scorching, but there’s tons of candy for the kids. www.nisswa.com

J U LY 3

The parade lasts about an hour and is less than 1 mile in length, which the parade participants love. An estimated 8,000-12,000 people come to Nisswa on July 3 to enjoy the festivities. Families line up early with their blankets and lawn chairs to find their perfect spot to view the parade. If it’s fireworks you love, you won’t be disappointed. You’ll find lots of options during the week of the Fourth in the lakes area, with

fireworks lighting up the night sky on several different nights. In Nisswa, fireworks are typically July 2 with our partner, Grand View Lodge, at their Party at the Pines, which also features music and food. Stay in downtown Nisswa after the parade for continued entertainment. You’ll also have the opportunity to take in more parades - enjoy the Pequot Lakes Stars & Stripes Parade at noon July 4, followed by a parade at 4 p.m. in Brainerd and fireworks in Brainerd that night. In addition, most of the big resorts in the lakes area shoot off fireworks, plus there are independent fireworks shows around many area lakes and even more shows hosted by local communities. The Brainerd lakes area is definitely the place to celebrate your Fourth of July week.

Downtown comes to life with lights Friday, Nov. 27 Celebrate both Thanksgiving and the Christmas season at the 39th annual Nisswa City of Lights Festival on the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 27. While many people are focused on shopping and finding bargains on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, downtown Nisswa is focused on experiencing a beautiful winter festival. It’s like stepping into a Hallmark movie scene or a Norman Rockwell painting. Downtown Nisswa is definitely the best place to spend the day after Thanksgiving. Thousands of Christmas lights have been strung throughout downtown, from merchants’ stores to the chamber gazebo to all trees both small and tall. Store windows are decorated for the season and the feel of Christmas is in the air. Nisswa truly turns into an absolutely magical place on this day. The festival begins mid-afternoon when people gather around bonfires that are lit along the Paul Bunyan Trail, horse-drawn wagons take people on rides through town, and children write letters to Santa and place them in a mailbox. www.nisswa.com

NOVEMBER 27

Step into the caboose to hear “The Polar Express” story being read or join in as Christmas carolers from local churches and schools roam the streets singing. Pet the live reindeer and get your picture taken with them while sitting in a sleigh. The Nisswa Area Historical Society’s Pioneer Village is aglow with hundreds of luminaries lighting the walkway that is the backdrop for several activities, including a live nativity scene, free cider and mini doughnuts and the Love Lights a Tree program. The Love Lights a Tree ceremony is a beautiful tradition where people can purchase

a tree light as a visual tribute to remember, acknowledge and celebrate the lives of loved ones. Each purchase comes with a personalized tree ornament to take home. At 5:30 p.m., all the Christmas lights are turned on throughout town for a truly magnificent sight and Santa arrives atop the city fire truck to hear children’s wishes at the gazebo at 6 p.m. Fireworks are the finale of this family focused event and are launched from the Nisswa City Park at 7:30 p.m. The park is the perfect location to shoot off the fireworks show, centering the display directly over the ball field and the Turtle Track area of downtown. There’s not a bad spot in town to view the fireworks. Whether you’ve experienced them once, twice, or not at all, cold weather fireworks are a must see, especially against a new blanket of fluffy, white snow. Be sure to buy Blinkie Lights, as well as a $5 commemorative City of Lights button to get discounts at more than 75 lakes area stores from Black Friday through Dec 31. The Nisswa City of Lights Festival is always held the Friday after Thanksgiving. 2020 Nisswa Destination Guide 15

The finish line is at the Nisswa Community Center with awards, prizes, Kidz Run and above mentioned festivities on the jam-packed grounds.

Trails offer everyday recreation in any season The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs right through the heart of downtown Nisswa with a parking area just south of Nisswa Square. You’ll find the year-round trail is in constant use by walkers, runners, inline skaters, bicyclists and snowmobilers. As the central hub of the 115-mile Paul Bunyan State Trail - which runs from Crow Wing State Park in Brainerd to Lake Bemidji State Park just north of Bemidji - Nisswa offers trail users a great place to stop to eat, shop or take in community events. The Paul Bunyan Trail is the longest of Minnesota’s state trails and the longest continuously paved rail-trail in the country. It follows an inactive railroad corridor belt built in 1893, passing through forests and by lakes, rivers and streams with flat and open stretches as well as hills. You’ll find many picturesque views along the trail. You’ll also find two bike fix-it stations in downtown Nisswa just outside the Nisswa Chamber Welcome Center and at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources trail parking lot. Trail maps and more information about the area can be found at the Nisswa Chamber Welcome Center, which is located right along the Paul Bunyan State Trail in downtown Nisswa. Public restrooms are located at the Welcome Center and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Gull Lake Trail Work continues on a multi-use recreational trail around Gull Lake. A 3.1-mile portion of trail will connect the city of Lake Shore to the tunnel in downtown Nisswa via Lower Roy Lake Road and Hazelwood Drive. Trail users www.nisswa.com

can then find the Paul Bunyan State Trail downtown. Trail construction is still a year or two away. Four miles of trail through Lake Shore is complete. The trail follows a wider shoulder on County State Aid Highway 77/Interlachen Road from Bar Harbor Supper Club to Sherwood Forest, and the trail is off road from Sherwood Forest to the southern city limits at Sandy Point Road.

A one-mile trail segment linking Lake Shore and Nisswa remains to be built. Fundraising is underway, and the city of Lake Shore encourages donations to its Field of Interest Fund. When finished, the Gull Lake Trail will be a 21-mile, paved, multi-use trail that will travel through four communities around Gull Lake - East Gull Lake, Fairview Township, Lake Shore and Nisswa.

Michael Karkosh (left) and Steven Karkosh spent the 2019 fishing opener on Gull Lake.

A sure sign of spring in the Nisswa area is the walleye and northern pike fishing opener in May, where anglers dig their boats out of storage and hit the open water. An annual tradition for nearly six decades is the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce’s Welcome Wannigan, where Nisswa chamber staff, chamber members and Miss Nisswa royalty ply the water in a pontoon boat offering complimentary coffee and doughnuts to anglers on Gull Lake. The Wannigan launches from Bar Harbor Supper Club and churns through Lake Margaret before heading south onto the big lake in search of anglers needing sustenance. Spending the fishing opener in the Nisswa area is a family tradition for many, including Michael and Steven Karkosh, whose family has stayed at an area resort for 30 years. The 2019 fishing opener was the third the brothers spent on Gull Lake. They like the Nisswa area lakes, and eating pizza downtown.

Steve Thomas (left), Bob Schmidt and Larry Schmidt fish Gull Lake in May 2019.

Brothers Larry and Bob Schmidt, along with brother-in-law Steve Thomas, have spent quite a few years venturing from the Twin Cities area to Gull Lake to fish. They like the lake itself and area resorts where they have stayed. The Schmidts said their father came to Gull Lake years ago, and the tradition continues with the next generation.

Travis Scott has been coming to the Nisswa area from West St. Paul for more than 10 years. It was a tradition since age 12 to come here with his dad, and when his dad died, Scott started bringing friends with him. He likes Nisswa because of the friendly and respectful people, and because the city is clean and taken care of.

Susie Anundson, Laura Leonard and Melissa Seamans cruise Main Street in Nisswa on a crisp fall day.

Fall - the leaves begin to change to vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. The morning air becomes brisk until the sun pops out and warms things up. Outdoor activities are still in full swing. Venture to Nisswa and soak up those fall colors and cooler days with a bike ride or walk along the Paul Bunyan State Trail, by the lake or at one of the many area parks. Take a scenic drive on County Road 77 around Gull Lake and pass some of the lakes area’s famous and historic resorts and golf courses. You’ll drive by Mount Ski Gull where the Zipline will take you over the trees, ablaze with fall color. Nisswa celebrates this season with its Fall Festival and Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge, along with Halloween festivities, Oktoberfest, and late season golf and open water fishing. This is yet another perfect time of year for a girls getaway weekend. That’s what Jackie Fraser of Winnipeg, Ann Marie Jasper of Vadnais Heights and Nicolle Hebeisen of Dundas did one weekend when they enjoyed a weekend of shopping and eating in Nisswa. “Ganley’s is a must when I come up here,” Hebeisen said. These ladies enjoyed the quieter atmosphere compared to summer and

cruising through Nisswa shops, as well as end-of-season sales. Fraser called Nisswa in the fall season “super cute, inviting and calming,” while Jasper said the town is “adorable, very friendly.” Susie Anundson, Melissa Seamans and Laura Leonard ventured north from Maple Grove as part of a group of seven couples, taking a colder fall afternoon to

check out downtown Nisswa. They also liked visiting shops in a quieter setting, taking advantage of the season’s closeout specials, and said they also like spending time at the brewery and Pickle Factory. “It’s not as busy as during the summer. I like that,” Leonard said.

Nick and Abby Wendt show off their Christmas sweaters with friends Shae Lingenfelder and Jenny Schleper in downtown Nisswa.

Winter may bring the cold, but you’ll find if you simply bundle up and dress warm, you’ll have the time of your life playing in the snow and on the ice while embracing all Mother Nature has to offer during this season. From skiing to snowshoeing, snow tubing to snowmobiling, ice hockey to ice fishing, winter is just plain fun in the lakes area.

Jace and Erica Peterson, along with Erica’s parents, Bruce and Rita Kitsch, stop in the Nisswa Welcome Center during a winter visit.

Nisswa’s most beloved event is a winter festival presented each year on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. The Nisswa City of Lights Festival transforms our town into a Norman Rockwell painting with Christmas lights as far as the eye can see. The grand finale of the evening is a fireworks display like no other. There is nothing like fireworks

against the cold, crisp winter sky, and snow just makes it that much better. The Kitsch family - Bruce and Rita from Webster, North Dakota, and their daughter and son-in-law, Erica and Jace Peterson from Starkweather, North Dakota - had fun traversing the downtown Nisswa streets one colder day. The family vacations in Nisswa at the end of November every year, and Rita said the City of Lights is right out of a Hallmark movie. Jace compared the whole town of Nisswa to a Hallmark movie. The family enjoys Nisswa’s relaxing, quieter atmosphere this time of year. They particularly like choosing a different restaurant every night for dinner. “We come here and just hang out and relax,” Rita said. Abby and Nick Wendt of St. Cloud have an area cabin and always head into Nisswa. “We bring our fellow travelers to the area. We like to come here for the lights festival,” Abby said. One winterlike day they brought friends Shae Lingenfelder and Jenny Schleper, both from New Orleans, to downtown Nisswa. They all called Nisswa a great little town. “We love the shops. We love the community. It’s clean,” they said. “This time of year, this is our jam,” Nick said. “It’s cozier. It’s slower and nice to walk around.” Also be sure to check out the Nisswa Winter Jubilee in mid-February, which offers numerous fun activities to get people out of the house for a fun winter day.

owners of Brainerd International Raceway. “There wasn’t a thought of not continuing,” said Kristi, one of the few female owners of a major auto racing facility in the United States. “There are days when I wonder about (owning the track). I certainly wouldn’t have bought the track by myself. I had been with (Jed) every day at the track, and I didn’t ever plan to do it on my own.” But, despite the tragic loss, Kristi was determined to keep the business going. She spent the winter months after the tragedy meeting with friends and business mentors to review BIR’s operation and establish a plan for the 2019 race season. She then began meeting with the track’s management team to develop a plan, especially splitting up Jed’s duties. “It became easier as the season went on,” Kristi said in an interview in August 2019. “We had the team in place to do the job. That made it easier.” Kristi helped oversee some facility projects in 2019, continuing a trend of improvements since the Cophams purchased the track in 2006. A safer track layout was completed in 2019 by splitting the road course from a shared section of the drag strip into two separate tracks. Plus, seven acres of asphalt were spread, which allowed the NHRA to put their professionals together instead of having them separated on either side of the facility. www.nisswa.com

“We’re always looking at improving things,” Kristi said. “We also need another big (storage) building.” BIR also features 200 acres of camping with areas slated specifically for families, a playground, a driving school, band stage and Wheelie Bar and Grille, along with 164 full-service recreational sites, shower trailers and in-field deluxe condominiums. The raceway employs 15 full-time, year-round staff members with 35 seasonal staff and more than 300 temporary workers for Nationals. 2020 Season The 2020 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is scheduled for Aug. 13-16, 2020, at BIR. The Brainerd event once again follows the Northwest Nationals in Seattle on the 24-race schedule. The 2020 season at Brainerd International Raceway is packed with thrilling motorsports that are perfect for the whole family. BIR’s 2020 schedule offers a diverse lineup of racing action, from ground-pounding dragsters to high-flying Superbikes to gravity-defying watercross (snowmobiles on open water) to wheel-to-wheel road racing to jaw-dropping drifting. It’s going to be another amazing season at BIR.

The focal point of the season, again, will be the 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals on Aug. 13-16. The stars of the National Hot Rod Association descend on BIR for a weekend of nitro-fueled racing action. These are the best drag racers on the planet, piloting 11,000-horsepower dragsters at more than 330 mph. It’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else. And the party at the end of Race Day rages on all night in the campground affectionately called “The Zoo.” If you’d rather trade in your grandstand seat for a driver’s seat, BIR has many opportunities for getting behind the wheel and on the track. The BIR Performance Driving School is a great opportunity to learn how to handle a car at high speeds and then put that knowledge to work on BIR’s road course. The drag strip is open to those who want to give drag racing a try during the Wednesday Night Street Drags, which also include the chance to learn about autocross and drifting. Most of the racing at BIR includes categories for those who are giving racing a try with their street car, truck or bike. People still like to fish, but they needed to change the way they fish because weedlines are deeper and the lakes are more clear.” Wicktor said the avid anglers are still smart anglers, but some of the casual anglers just want to have fun. “Many of the tourists who come here also like to relax and do more bobber fishing off the weedlines,” she said. “And most tourists don’t focus on one type of fish. They like panfish or walleye. And we have so many different lakes in our area so people always have a good chance to catch fish.” Wicktor adds that she has been seeing more young anglers because of the popularity of high school fishing teams. “A lot more kids are getting back into fishing,” she said. “And they fish year-round for all species. They really like fishing for active species like eelpout and carp.” Speaking of year round, Wicktor said ice fishing is growing in popularity in northern Minnesota. “It’s really popular with the fancier ice houses,” she said. “Two years ago someone suggested that I stock frozen pizza and extension cords (in the bait shop). They said more people now have generators for their fish houses, so they have pizza ovens and TV sets.” S&W Bait carries night crawlers, leeches by the pound and a variety of minnows, including the all important redtails. Another longtime bait shop in the Nisswa area is Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle. They offer Nisswa Fishing Guide services, boat rental, live bait and fishing supplies, and daily fishing updates. “The biggest thing that has changed is the serious anglers are more mobile because there’s more information available about where the hot bite might be,” said Jason Erlandson, of Sportland Bait. “(Anglers) may move around to lakes (out of the area) instead of grinding it out (fishing) one lake.” Erlandson adds that 90 percent of his fishing customers are tourists visiting the lakes area.

“We still have a lot of grandmas and grandpas fishing off the dock,” he said, “And we have a lot of people fishing with the kids at the family cabin. We don’t see as many big groups, with eight to 10 anglers, coming from the resorts.” The other fishing trend, according to Erlandson, are the baits avid anglers in our area use. “The big summertime bait was the redtail chub about 10 years ago,” he said, “but in the past three or four years, people started using slip bobbers with leeches to catch fish.” Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle, which opened in 1976, carries all the essentials, including the popular redtail chub. The shop is close to Gull Lake and only minutes from Pelican Lake and the Whitefish Chain of Lakes.

If you haven’t visited Nisswa Lake Park, it’s time you do

After years of hard work raising funds and seeking grants and donations, the Nisswa Lake Park and Recreation Area is worth checking out. You’ll find the park on the west side of the Highway 371 tunnel that takes people from downtown Nisswa to the

park and Nisswa Lake, and vice versa. Trails wind through the 2.1-acre park, with a center area boasting a covered bike shelter, benches, picnic pavilion and an outdoor classroom. At a high point overlooking Nisswa Lake is a bench with flagpole and plantings.

Below is a dock system for boaters who want to park and use the park or continue on to downtown Nisswa. The park is easily reached from downtown through the tunnel under Highway 371. The history of Nisswa Lake Park

www.nisswa.com

dates to 2007, when property on Nisswa Lake became available. The Friends of Nisswa Lake Park formed to raise funds to buy the property and partnered with the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation to manage the funds. In 2009, a local couple committed to selling property to the city for a park with a $300,000 donation, on the condition the city obtain a $500,000 Department of Natural Resources Parks and Legacy Grant to buy the property. That grant was awarded in 2010. That year, the Friends of Nisswa Lake Park raised $67,000 from more than 170 people, organizations and businesses. That was the tipping point in finalizing the park property purchase in December 2010. The fundraising group and city have been active in raising awareness and funding for the park development since then and laid the groundwork for the development seen in the past two years. One major donor gave $35,000 in 2017 to prepare the property and build trails. The city matched that donation to fully fund the trail system. That donor then gave $50,000 for the picnic pavilion. The late Millie Gjertson is honored for

her donations with an engraved stone at the park’s entrance. The Friends of Nisswa Lake Park continue to raise funds for future park development, including a lake overlook scenic plaza, site lighting and power, parking lot and access road, performance space, Americans with Disabilities Act access trail to the waterfront, a waterfront boardwalk, bathrooms and pavilion facility, fishing pier and native plant rain garden. Nisswa City Park Nisswa City Park is located in the heart of Nisswa, at the north end of downtown just off the Paul Bunyan Trail. This park is always a hub of activity, featuring a playground, ball fields, skating rinks and warming house. Fritz Loven Park Find solitude at Fritz Loven Park in Lake Shore. The 80-acre park features Stony Brook, tall trees and wildlife for those who love the peacefulness that nature offers. Take a hike in this park on foot, snowshoes or cross-country skis, and bring the kids to play on a playground or sled down a hill.

Thurlow T-ball tradition marks 50 years in summer 2020 When Scott “Mike” Thurlow started the free Thurlow T-ball program in

Nisswa 50 years ago this year, he likely never imagined the program would

continue long after he was gone, or that his three daughters - now in their 20s would be responsible for the program’s continuity. That tradition will continue in summer 2020. The program is still free and open to all kids ages 2-8 at Nisswa City Park. Check with Nisswa Parks and Recreation on the time and day, and attend every week or whenever you can. Thurlow started the program in 1970, long before daughters Maggie, Jackie and Lizzy were born. He bought about $100 worth of equipment - flimsy bases, bats, tees, balls and a few gloves for kids who might need them. Those same bats, tees and balls have been used every summer ever since. “This is what we grew up doing in our life and what our parents instilled in us - serving the community,” daughter Maggie said as the reason the three sisters and their mom, Mimi Thurlow, continue to run the program each summer. “It’s about the idea of keeping the honor of dad - to keep that tradition alive, be respectful to him and keep his legacy alive,” Jacki agreed. “If that meant still running the program he started when he was our age - why not? He gave so much, it’d be so hard to see the program diminish.” www.nisswa.com

And Lizzy said: “My reason is my dad. When he first started T-ball he wanted it to be a program for kids to come and for kids to connect and learn the basics. He made it available for all families.” Thurlow T-ball has always been offered for an hour one night a week during summer for free to any parents who want to bring their children to learn the basics of playing ball, including how to hold and swing a bat, how to run the bases and how to field a ball. In the process, these youngsters learn about sharing and leadership. And there’s no pressure for kids to attend every week; there’s no registration or fees. They can show up whenever their families’ schedules allow. The program has remained basically the same since Mike Thurlow - who died unexpectedly in January 2007 at age 64 - started it. On a typical Thurlow T-ball night, most parents sit in the shade along the first baseline near the dugout while others stand near the pitcher’s mound to encourage the kids fielding balls. When a ball is hit, players in the field swarm toward it, tumbling over each other to be the one to come up with the ball. After hitting the ball, kids are told to drop the bat and run - hopefully down the first baseline. Most youngsters do just that with encouragement, or with mom or dad holding their hand along the way. Lizzy said it’s enlightening to watch the young players learn skills week to week. The Thurlow sisters and their mom plan to celebrate the 50th year of Thurlow T-ball in summer 2020. “Back when he was our age, he had the drive and motivation to give back and try something he loved. He was willing to start a free program,” Jackie said of her dad. “We understand it’s something that needs to happen so we’ll take turns stepping up. No matter what it takes, we’ll give back to the Nisswa community. It’s an area that helped raise us.” “He instilled that motivation and passion in all us girls growing up, the drive to impact Nisswa in any way he could,” Lizzy said, noting her dad wanted to impact the community while helping make community members a little bit healthier as well. “My biggest goal is having the opportunity to someday have my own children doing this and keeping the legacy going,” Maggie said. www.nisswa.com

Carlson steps down as historical society president For more than 30 years, the Nisswa Area Historical Society’s History Center and Museum has been the place where residents and visitors to the lake country have an opportunity to immerse themselves in local history. The society continues to thrive, although there was a leadership change in 2019. Dick Carlson, a person who has been influential in the growth and success of the society, stepped down as the historical society’s president. Carlson, known as the “keeper of Nisswa’s history,” has been involved with the center for 25 years. “You can’t believe the history here,” Carlson said of the Nisswa area. “I’ve always liked American history, but we inadvertently purchased a log home on an historic site on Clark Lake. That’s when I really became interested in the history of that house, and the area.” The Nisswa Area Historical Society started as The Caboose Society (the historic train caboose in downtown 44

2020 Nisswa Destination Guide

Nisswa was originally run as a museum). Both the caboose and depot were in place during the Nisswa centennial in 1986. The caboose was eventually moved a few blocks north, near the site where the current Historical Society’s History Center and Museum are located. “I was involved in preserving the caboose after the centennial,” Carlson said. “We moved the caboose, and Carl

Boberg donated the depot building. About that same time, Madden’s was selling their (Lumbertown) village, and people wanted to keep (the village) in the area. So it was moved to Nisswa (becoming the Pioneer Village portion of the museum). The Livery building was also built, and Lee and Penny Anderson gave us the (current Historical Society) building.” Dick, and his late wife, Leanne,

helped negotiate the sale and appraised the valuable antiques the museum collected. “Leanne was recognized for her interest in antiques,” Dick said. The Carlsons are examples of the many volunteers who have helped run the society over the years. As a volunteer, Carlson has been one of the most welcoming and knowledgeable volunteers - greeting people with a smile and always having a great story. “Helping put the (historic) buildings together was a highlight,” Carlson said of his career. “I’m also proud of the event that we host, like the Nisswa-stamman that has become one of the biggest Scandinavian events in the country.” The one project that Carlson hoped would be completed was the construction of a replica of the St. Colombo Mission. “That was a marvelous structure,” he said of the mission that was located south of Nisswa, “but we couldn’t get funding to build it (on the museum property). We could have used it for weddings.”

Carlson does plan to continue volunteering at the center and will hold the honorary title of president emeritus and be the curator. “I plan to stay involved as the curator and a greeter for historical society guests,” he said. The Nisswa Area Historical Society will continue to be a vital part of the Nisswa landscape. Over the next few years it will undergo a process of upgrades to bring new offerings to the community. The history of the Nisswa area is rich, and by visiting the Nisswa History Center and Museum, you will experience how this small community, brought together by a lumber company, developed into today’s thriving community. Membership for the Nisswa Area Historical Society is $15 per individual, $20 for families and $30 per business. Volunteers are needed throughout the summer for various events on the grounds and in the Nisswa History Center and Museum building.

* Lobby Café (218) 829-2811 www.maddens.com 11266 Pine Beach Peninsula, Brainerd

Golf trips are made easy thanks to resort bookings A number of years ago, “Golf Digest” ranked the Brainerd lakes area among the top 50 golf destinations in the world. Thanks to a concerted effort by the resorts that are home to most of the nationally ranked courses in the area, visiting for golf has only gotten better. New and exciting restaurants, spas and other amenities along with access to many of the top lakes all work to make the lakes area a great family vacation spot. But one hidden gem often overlooked is the ease at making your golf trip a reality. Tim Bauman at Cragun’s Resort and Tim Martin at Grand View Lodge are just two golf package experts who take the worry off everything, but your golf game. Bauman said with cabins along the course as well as at Cragun’s Resort, a group of 16 or more can easily be accommodated. But the demand is high, he said. “It used to be you could sneak one of these bookings not that far out, but the demand is changed such that if 64

2020 Nisswa Destination Guide

you’re not booking these nine months out, they’re gone,” Bauman said. “Many of these groups are contacting us right after they finished their golf trip from last year.” Bauman said the biggest demand is for the cabins on the Legacy Golf Courses. But the key point is for these groups to be in close proximity to everyone. “A lot of these golf groups are up with their buddies from college or whatever,” Bauman said. “They really just want to be together. Whether it’s playing pool or

ping pong at the cabin or hanging out at the bar at the golf course. It’s really about them being together. The most popular thing is truly fire pits. They want to sit around and play bean bags or just have open outdoor space.” Cragun’s is updating its meeting spaces at the resort to be more hospitality specific. The meeting areas are then surrounded by rooms to create a natural noise buffer and to allow large groups to be close. The concept is big with wedding parties, Bauman said One of the best selling points for

making the lakes area a golf destination is the reciprocity agreement among many of the resorts. Book your stay at Grand View Lodge and get a tee time at Breezy Point Resort’s Deacon’s Lodge. “We include golf at the Pines or Preserve and we’ll take care of the tee times there,” Bauman said. “The nicest thing about doing a golf package is when you have 12 guys coming up, you come to the golf shop - everyone is paid. Everything is done and paid for before they even get to the resort.” Grand View Lodge was the first to bring championship golf to the lakes area and they aren’t behind with any of their other amenities either. Grand View’s Loon Lodge sleeps 16 and the resort has multiple other cabins that sleep up to 12 guests. Martin said the No. 1 priority for groups is booking enough beds and then it’s getting the best possible rate. “The No. 3 thing is amenities, like our clubhouse suites have gas grills and patios,” he said. “The Fairway Townhomes, some of those come with pool tables or foosball tables.” Bauman said the game room experience is a big selling point at Cragun’s. Martin suggested booking as early as possible, but also being as organized as possible before calling. He said for the best likelihood of landing a spot at Grand View, book 50 weeks out or even a year. “Grand View has a rebooking policy so if your group comes in September you have two weeks to rebook for next year,” Martin said. “If you do that, the cabin is yours. If you don’t then it goes back into a sales pool. My suggestion is as soon as you have dates make your reservation.” The size of your group, how many rounds of golf and at which courses you want to play golf are also key information that will help a group get the best possible rate or at least have a good idea of the complete cost. Both Martin and Bauman said the best asset with dealing directly with the resort is golf costs and room costs are included in one price. There are plans that even include meals. “It’s going to be organized,” Martin said. “That’s the No. 1 thing. Granted there may be slips here and there, but that’s just communication. Working with a golf sales rep, 99% of the time, www.nisswa.com

you’re going to get what you’re asking for. Your tee times are going to be set. When you’re staying off site, your tee times aren’t always the tee times you want. “Another thing, because your golf packages are included with your stay, only one person has to check in at the clubhouse. People aren’t paying individually. They come to the course and they’re ready. The pro shop is aware

of the group. Outside services and the starter are aware of your group. Everyone knows what’s going on.” Madden’s on Gull and Breezy Point Resort offer similar golf package opportunities. While there is a golf course for everyone in the lakes area, there is also a resort staffed with someone willing to make your golf trip an annual highlight.

The pro shop offers the latest trends in men’s and women’s golf apparel, accessories and golf items.

Bobby’s Legacy, a Golf Digest 4 ½ star-rated course, was named after its famed designer, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. This is a “shot-makers” dream, with elevated tees, shorter holes and longer, more traditional par 4s and 5s, along with many split fairways and multiple tees that makes Bobby’s Legacy the ultimate in playability for all.

Nisswa is an easy jaunt from just about anywhere. Look at a Minnesota state map and find where State Highways 371 and 210 intersect. This intersection marks the cities of Brainerd and Baxter, which are only 16 miles straight south of downtown Nisswa. People travel to Nisswa from across the United States and abroad. Our Midwest friends come here often, some staying at our array of lodging

options and others staying at their seasonal homes here. It doesn’t matter the stay, everyone loves to come and play in Nisswa. Come to us by car, by plane or by train. If coming by car, check out the map on this page showing various distances. school. It’s all part of a Brainerd School District facilities improvement project that totals $205 million - including the $145.71 million bond referendum school district voters approved in April 2018 to improve schools throughout the district. “We’re building so we accommodate the growth in school. We need a school that can accommodate these families coming in,” Principal Molly Raske said. “Since I’ve been here, we’ve grown significantly.” Construction includes the addition of a second gym, two alternative classrooms, a two-story classroom addition, as well as work on a more secure entrance. Work will continue inside those spaces through the 2019-20 school year. In summer 2020, the entire interior of the school will be closed and every floor and wall will be refurbished. Renovations will include an enlarged cafeteria, remodeled kitchen and offices, and remodeled space through much of the rest of the school building. The end result will be larger spaces to accommodate students and, most important, security and the ability to lock down certain parts of the school building as other parts are in use. Raske said no educational space will be lost this school year as work continues. “Which is perfect because we don’t have any space to take away,” she said. Nisswa School’s project is expected to be nearly complete by the start of the 2020-21 school year. Nisswa offers it all - shopping, services and organizations In Nisswa, the goal remains the same, though the players may change. The goal is to keep all of our buildings full to provide the best experience for all who venture here. And those buildings are occupied, though perhaps by someone new since the last time you visited. Business continues to flourish in Nisswa, with something new always happening. Every visit is a different and unique experience - it’s rarely the same encounter from season to season - with businesses moving, businesses expanding and new businesses coming in. It may be just one new business, one expanded business or a mixture of the two. And we’re not just talking about downtown Nisswa. If you truly want to 72

and organizations. Though not an exhaustive list, you can find the following in Nisswa, including many right downtown on the main streets. For your health, we have dental, pharmacy, eye, chiropractic and gym services. For beauty, we have hair salons, spa services, a barber shop and a flower shop. Nisswa has accountants, insurance agencies, banks and real estate offices. We have our own post office and churches of many denominations. We have gas stations, auto repair, restaurants, a bookstore with children’s games, hardware store, sporting goods store and pet supply shop. We even

have our own elementary school with preschool offerings. Are you interested in joining a service organization? Nisswa has those, too, in the forms of a Lions club, women’s club, 4-H club for youth and more. And, of course, everyone knows that Nisswa offers some “Pretty Good Shopping” as well, complete with free parking. Not bad for a town that got its start as a railroad stop and now offers year-round living and recreational options.

A corner that’s nearly complete: What’s next for Sportland Corners? A transformation of the part of Nisswa historically known as “Sportland Corners” is nearly complete, with just one business retaining the “Sportland” name. Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle continues to occupy a tiny building just east of Schaefer’s Foods, a longtime anchor on one of the four corners. The Sportland Cafe, which closed long ago and sat empty for years, is now long gone. In its place is a new building housing American National Bank and a Stonehouse Coffee location. Across Highway 371, Holiday Stationstore anchors the southwest corner, with Wendy’s occupying the northwest corner. Next up for Sportland Corners are road improvements, all in the name of safety. In summer 2020, a project designed to make the Highway 371-County State Aid Highways 13 and 77 intersection at Sportland Corners safer will take place. That intersection project will include adding left turn lanes from CSAH 13 (by the bank and grocery store) and CSAH 77 (by Holiday and Wendy’s) onto Highway 371 to help the flow of traffic coming off those roads. The project will include replacing the signal lights. Also in summer 2020, an improvement project will take place on 3.2 miles of CSAH 13, from County Road 137 to CSAH 4. A year later, in 2021, 2.7 miles of CSAH 13 from Highway 371 (Sportland Corners) to County Road 137 will be improved. A detached trail may be built along part of CSAHs 13 and 77 as part of the summer 74

2020 Nisswa Destination Guide

project to install left turn lanes onto Highway 371 at those intersections. The trail would be detached from the Highway 371 intersection going east on CSAH 13 until after the first curve at Lutheran Church of the Cross, and west on CSAH 77 until the Wendy’s entrance.

Continuing east on CSAH 13, the trail would merge with the shoulder and go along a widened shoulder to the city’s border with Lake Edward Township. The widened shoulder would be included in the county’s 2021 CSAH 13 improvement project.

Berry farm Nisswa is also home to a berry farm on County Road 18. You’ve likely driven by the field of strawberries with the “u-pick” sign along the road. That’s Wallin Berry Farm LLC, where you will find fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.

Open since 1979, brothers John and Calvin Wallin own the farm. Calvin and Shirley Wallin, with help over the years from their children and grandchildren, run the strawberry farm. The season depends on the weather, with strawberries usually ripe for picking mid-June into July.

Thurs. 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Mid May - Oct. Nisswa Legion Parking Lot

Where it’s always Party Time!

Longtime turtle racer Nisswa Turtle Races are a tradition for most people who visit Nisswa in the summer, and even for those who live here year-round. For one 19-year-old from Oklahoma, Nisswa Turtle Races are not to be missed. Kinzie Lewis has raced turtles every summer since she was nearly 3 years old, ever since she’s ventured north to stay a week with her grandparents - Alan and Patty Fleet - at their Gull Lake cabin. Better yet, Lewis has all of her turtle buttons, ribbons and medals she’s won over the years to prove it. “I especially remember when I was little, going to catch the turtles,” Lewis said. “We’d set them on the ground and see which was faster.” Lewis would get mad if she couldn’t find a turtle and had to use one provided at the turtle track, said her grandma. “The turtle hunt - looking for the golden turtle - was the highlight of her trip,” Patty said, adding that after the turtle races, they’d take the turtle right

back to where they’d found it. Today, no one can bring their own turtle to the races. Instead, they are provided by turtle wranglers - or people from the Mounted Eagles Therapeutic Horsemanship program. Lewis said there’s a huge bulletin board at her grandparents’ cabin dedicated to turtle race memorabilia. Every time she’d win a turtle race, Lewis would stick her medals on the bulletin board. Her family believes Lewis won a wooden turtle in the last year of racing that saw the grand champion racer get a hand-carved turtle. It says “Mini Donut Man” on the back. Lewis’s photo at nearly 3 years old is featured on a page in the book “Brainerd Bound” that is dedicated to the Nisswa Turtle Race. In summer 2019, Lewis had her first stint as a turtle racing judge, and she loved it. She participated in the turtle race for volunteers as well.

Mattson Lumber owner serves as 2019 Nisswa Citizen of the Year The Nisswa Chamber of Commerce has a longtime tradition of surprising a deserving person each year and bestowing that person with the Nisswa Citizen of the Year honor. Recipients are always in awe, each believing many others are more deserving of the honor. The Nisswa Chamber couldn’t be more proud of the recipients of this honor, including the 2019 honoree, Bill Mattson, longtime owner of Mattson Lumber, just south of Nisswa on Highway 371, across from Gull Lake’s Hole-in-the-Day Bay. Citizen of the Year criteria include that the person be a servant of Nisswa, demonstrating passion and commitment toward the betterment of the community. Those nominated do not need to be chamber members, nor do they need to be Nisswa residents. Seasonal residents qualify, too. Anyone interested in nominating a candidate for 2020 should submit a written letter to the chamber that includes the core reasons why a particular nominee should be selected as the winner. The writer must also submit his or her own address and phone number, should more information be requested. The winner will be chosen in spring 2020. Mail letters and contact information to: Nisswa Citizen of the Year Selection Committee, C/O Nisswa Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 185, Nisswa, MN 56468. Like those honored before him, Mattson was “totally surprised” to learn he’d earned the award in 2019. His roots run deep in Nisswa. His grandparents, John and Anna Mattson, moved to the area in 1896 from Missouri, settling on Lake Edward Township property just two miles east of Nisswa that is now the Mattson Century Farm. It’s where Bill and Betty live today. Bill is the third generation Mattson to live there. Bill’s grandfather helped organize the first school district, helped build the schoolhouse and later was elected to the www.nisswa.com

first school board. His grandmother also served on the school board, and Bill’s father later served 16 years on the board as well. The Mattson family was also influential in the Nisswa Community Church. Bill attended Nisswa Elementary School and graduated from Brainerd High School. He started working for Standard Lumber Company in Nisswa after graduating from high school, eventually becoming the manager. Then, 33 years ago, he bought an existing lumber company that he turned into Mattson Lumber Co. Mattson is involved in the Nisswa community, but tends to fly under the radar with his activities. “Unpretentious,” is how former Citizen of the Year Cindy Terwilliger described Mattson as he humbly accepted the award. His community involvement includes: Nisswa Lions Club, past president and Melvin Jones award recipient; Nisswa American Legion member; Lakeshore Conservation Club member and past president; Nisswa Historical Society, past board member; Crow Wing County Historical Society, past board member; Mid-Minnesota Builders Association of Crow Wing, Wadena and lower Cass County, member; Nisswa Chamber, member since 1986; Brainerd Chamber; and Nisswa-stamman volunteer. Bill and Betty have hosted exchange

students from Turkey and Luxembourg through the Nisswa Lions, and have hosted Nisswa-stamman performers from Sweden. He has been a supporter of Nisswa Park & Recreation, Miss Nisswa Scholarship Pageant, Nisswa Elementary School’s Bloom fundraiser, Nisswa City of Lights, Nisswa School Parent Teacher Organization, Boy Scouts, Gull Lake Drifters, Lutheran Church of the Cross youth, Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge of Brainerd, Brainerd Youth for Christ and Sertoma Sunrise Club. “I feel rooted here. It’s a nice place to live,” Mattson said of Nisswa. John Wallin, the 2018 Nisswa Citizen of the Year, said: “I have personally known Bill my whole life, and if anyone in the Nisswa area deserves the Nisswa Citizen of the Year award, I highly recommend Bill Mattson to be the recipient of this honor.”

Nisswa Women’s Club to celebrate 100 years of service Nisswa has several active service clubs, including the Nisswa Women’s Club, which will mark 100 years of community service in 2020. The club will celebrate its 100-year anniversary at its Aug. 20, 2020, meeting at Cragun’s Legacy. This nonprofit organization serves the Nisswa lakes area. The club provides scholarships to local high school seniors and nontraditional women students at Central Lakes College, and it makes other charitable donations that benefit the Brainerd lakes area.

Swimming Pool Hot Tub and Sauna Free Breakfast Newly Remodeled

Established in 1920 as the Nisswa Sewing Club and also known as the Nisswa Busy Bees, the organization began with 14 members. The club’s original activities were to sew quilts and layettes and sell them to raise funds for the needy. Club donations were given to various charities, and the organization sponsored a girls club. In 1935, the club changed its name to the Nisswa Women’s Club and continued with the primary purpose of service to the community. Since 1961, the Nisswa Women’s Club

has been awarding scholarships to Nisswa and Brainerd lakes area students. In 2019, the club gave six $1,500 scholarships to high school students and six $1,500 scholarships to nontraditional students at CLC. Membership is open to any woman, and the club’s website says “all shapes, sizes and ages are welcome.” Members include women from throughout the Brainerd lakes area, and from as far away as Colorado, Arizona and Illinois. The hummingbird is the club’s official insignia.
