Final season of ‘Shameless’ premieres
By Breanna Henry TV MediaThe10th and final season of Showtime’s longest-running original series premieres Sunday, Nov. 10. In simplest terms, “Shameless” is a chronicling of the Gallagher family. They’re poor yet shockingly well adjusted, considering the circumstances — this South Chicago family has seen more than its fair share of grief and strife.
The series has been nominated for dozens of television awards since it premiered in January 2011, and with a large, outstanding ensemble cast, an indie rock soundtrack and a wry, colorful script, it isn’t hard to see why. Eng lish screenwriter Paul Abbot created the original British version of “Shameless,” and his semi-autobio graphical script became a massive hit in the U.K. before American pro ducer John Wells developed the pi lot of Showtime’s American take. If you are a new viewer, know that “Shameless” is gritty, vulgar and vi olent. “Shameless” has it all, and is unapologetic — shameless even — about every scene.
The Gallaghers are far from being the easily digestible, blue-collar version of America’s poor that series
such as “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Roseanne” or even “Married with Children” showcased — this is not living paycheck to paycheck, it’s living penny to penny. Despite heavy themes of alcoholism, abuse, poverty and mental illness, “Shameless” manages more laughs than many comedies, and the Gallaghers seem more real than the cast of any reality show.

Rossum is not returning for the final season, though, and as difficult as it is for fans to see her go, it will certainly be much harder for the Gallagher family. Lip Gallagher is played by Jeremy Allen White (“After Everything,” 2018), and he epitomizes the “brilliant, but lazy” character trope while remaining one of the most endearingly tragic, lovable members of the family. Ian is the third oldest, wonderfully portrayed by Cameron Monaghan

Cutkosky’s (“The Unborn,”
ably responsible young adult in military school. Frank’s youngest son, toddler Liam, is played by Christian Isaiah (“Married”), and revealing much about him would be far too much of a spoiler. The Gallagher’s neighbors, Veronica (Shanola Hampton, “#Truth,” 2019) and Kevin (Steve Howey, “Stuber,” 2019), and Ian’s on-again off-again partner, Mickey (Noel Fisher, “The Red Line”), round out the highly dysfunctional cast that you can’t help but fall in love with.
The 10th season of “Shameless” promises more of Frank’s misadventures, Ian’s relationship troubles, Lip’s seemingly doomed attempts at being a better father than his own, and more of Debbie getting into trouble — what it doesn’t promise is a happy ending for the Gallagher family. Viewers might want everything to work out, a happy ending for these long-suffering characters, but in the wise words of Ian Gallagher, “Sometimes we get so wrapped up in getting what we want that we forget to ask ourselves why we wanted it in the first place.”
I think it’s best to face the facts now: the damage Frank’s alcoholism has done to his family is permanent, and a happy ending where the family suddenly finds itself wealthy and happy would undermine everything the show has been thus far: the most realistic depiction of poverty in America ever broadcast, as well as a real look at addiction and illness. I’m extremely interested to find out how the series differs from the British version’s finale, and even more excited for when I can finally binge the entire series in one go without needing to wait for a whole week or more for the next episode. Through everything, and despite each other’s many faults, the Gallaghers love each other; as damaged as they all are, emotionally and mentally, they are one of the most beautiful depictions of what it means to be a family in television history. The end of the series will be bittersweet. The stories of Frank, Fiona, Lip, Ian, Debbie, Carl and Liam have been many years in the making, and their outrageous antics and emotional roller-coaster of a story will be sorely missed. Tune in to the final season of “Shameless,” which premieres Sunday, Nov. 10, on Showtime.

WHAT’S NEW ON AMAZON PRIME:
“The Man in the High Castle” Season 4
What would the world have become had the Allies been defeated in World War II? This series explores that hypothetical world, and Season 4 premieres Friday, Nov. 15. Based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick, this intense drama takes viewers to 1960s America, where the East has been taken over by Nazi Germany and the West is occupied by Imperial Japan. Alexa Davalos (“Clash of the Titans,” 2010) stars as Juliana Crain, who is brought into the covert world of the American Resistance after her sister is killed by the Japanese and she is entrusted with a film that exposes an alternate reality where America and its allies won the war. Later in the series, we learn that there is more than one alternate reality, and that some will stop at nothing to control them all. Rufus Sewell (“Victoria”) and Joel de la Fuente (“Hemlock Grove”) also star as the Resistance’s strongest opposition, the complex Oberguppenführer John Smith (Sewell) of the SS and the conflicted Chief Inspector Kido (de la Fuente) of the Kempetai, respectively. Season 4 is the last installment of this acclaimed series, and showrunners have described the final season as “very epic — very conclusive and very ambiguous.”
WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX:
“Klaus”
Christmas comes early on Netflix with the release of this holiday film when it premieres Friday, Nov. 15.
“Klaus” is the story of a postman named Jesper (Jason Schwartzman, “Wine Country,” 2019) who, being the postal academy’s worst student, is stationed in the town of Smeerensburg in the Arctic Ciricle. Smeerensburg is far from friendly, and its locals are perfectly content to live in the “unhappiest place on Earth.” When Jesper discovers the reclusive toy-
maker Klaus (J. K. Simmons, “SpiderMan: Far from Home,” 2019) and sets a series of good deeds in motion by offering to deliver Klaus’s toys if he donates them to children, the whole town begins to change. Sure to become a holiday classic, this film is filled with heart and humor.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU: “Dollface”
On Friday, Nov. 15, Hulu presents this new comedy. The series stars Kat Dennings (“2 Broke Girls”) as Jules, who is trying to rebuild her neglected female friendships after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend. Joining the cast as Jules’ closest (and most neglected) friends are Brenda Song (“Dads”) as Madison, Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”) as Stella and Esther Povitsky (“Crazy ExGirlfriend”) as Izzy. This new comedy series will appeal to anyone who has ever lost themselves in a relationship, or known someone who has.
“Veronica Mars” (2014)
On Thursday, Nov. 14, this movie continuation of the popular TV series joins the Hulu lineup. Fans of the series will know Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell, “The Good Place”) to be a cunning teenager from Neptune, California, who began her sleuthing career in high school. The film picks up about 10 years after the show ended, and finds Mars in New York
City with a lucrative job offer at a law firm. When she finds out that her ex-boyfriend, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring, “iZombie”), has been accused of murder, Mars returns to her hometown to solve the mystery. Serving as a bridge between the Season 3 finale and the 2019 Season 4 premiere, the addition of this film to Hulu’s offerings means you can now watch the entire “Veronica Mars” series from start to finish.
WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY +
“The Mandalorian”
Star Wars fans can finally get their hands on this new series when it premieres Tuesday, Nov. 12. Set in the aftermath of the Empire’s collapse and long before the emergence of the First Order, this is the story of a lone
wolf, a bounty hunter on the edge of the galaxy. Pedro Pascal (“Game of Thrones”) stars as the titular Mandalorian (Mandalorians are beings from the planet Mandalore, the most famous of which is the character Boba Fett), and he’s described his role as “Clint Eastwood-esque.” This won’t be a clear-cut case of good guy versus bad guy, as the Mandalorian resides squarely in gray areas; his combat skills are advanced, but his moral character needs some work. Pascal is joined by Gina Carano (“Deadpool,” 2016), Nick Nolte (“Warrior,” 2011), Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”) Carl Weathers (“Chicago Justice”), Ming-Na Wen (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) and more. Even eccentric German director Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” 2005) makes an appearance, and “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) director Taika Waititi voices the hilarious droid IG-11. It has all the makings of TV greatness, and though Star Wars fans are champing at the bit for this one, you’ll be able to enjoy the series even if you’ve never seen a Star Wars film.
“Lady and the Tramp” (2019) Disney has been on a role of liveaction reboots of their classic films, releasing three (“Dumbo,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King”) in the past year alone. The latest addition to this list is a remake of the timeless tale “Lady and the Tramp,” premeiring on Disney+ Tuesday, Nov. 12. Tessa Thompson (“Avengers: Endgame,” 2019) and Justin Thereoux (“The Leftovers”) voice the titular characters: Lady, a refined cocker spaniel owned by Jim and Darling, and Tramp, a stray mutt. When Darling has a baby, her aunt comes to help, bringing her two Siamese cats with her. The cats cause chaos in the house, leaving Lady to take the blame, so she runs away thinking she’s been replaced by the baby and ends up running into Tramp. The two embark on adventures, and romance quickly blooms (yes, the classic spaghetti moment is in there). Unlike this year’s “The Lion King,” this live action reboot uses live animals rather than CGI. You won’t want to miss the premiere of “Lady and the Tramp” this Tuesday.

Seeking ‘Redemption’: ‘Worst Cooks’ returns for Thanksgiving special

Astill-frozen
turkey? Lumpy gravy? Gluey mashed potatoes that could practically patch drywall?
Don’t worry, these are some of the Thanksgiving mishaps that can happen to the best of us.
When you add the stress of entertaining and feeding the whole family, that margin of error seems to increase with every extra place setting.
Now imagine having to prep a Thanksgiving meal in front of a national audience. It’s an opportunity that some cooks relish, and a chal-
lenge that makes others cringe. Either way, Food Network is hoping it’ll be entertaining to watch when it serves up a second helping of “Worst Cooks in America: Thanksgiving Redemption,” airing Sunday, Nov. 10.
A stand-alone “Worst Cooks in America” special is just the kind of light fare that will entertain viewers without locking them into a multiweek commitment. And when you have just an hour to make an impression, it helps to feature a few familiar faces.
Host Anne Burrell has co-hosted every season of “Worst Cooks in America” (there have been 17 of them, if you’re counting), and she’s
back for this second Turkey Daythemed installment. But with a new project rolling out later this month, Tyler Florence is unfortunately out for this year’s edition. Instead, “Chopped” regular Scott Conant is stepping in as Burrell’s co-host and rival team leader.
Who are the contestants? Four former “Worst Cooks” Boot Camp recruits, and Burrell and Conant will waste no time getting started: they’ll task these once-maligned, now-improved competitors to prep a side dish using a well-known Thanksgiving ingredient. After that, the hosts will pick their teams and coach them through the necessary steps for preparing a palate-pleasing Thanksgiving feast.
As the title indicates, it’s all about redemption for these contestants. Oh, and a grand prize of $5,000 worth of kitchen appliances and upgrades, too. Judges Esther Choi, Clifford Crooks and Jonathan Waxman are the culinary experts who will ultimately decide the winner when “Worst Cooks in America: Thanksgiving Redemption” airs this week. In the meantime, we probably all have a story of something going wrong while prepping a Thanksgiving feast — I once decided on a whim to roast chestnuts without knowing how to peel them. So have a laugh and share your biggest Thanksgiving meal mishaps with Food Network on social media, using #WorstCooks.

Hello Dolly Country music
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaTrends come and go, but country music never goes out of style for its fans. Luckily for country buffs, it’s time to celebrate the genre’s biggest stars at one of the year’s most highly anticipated award ceremonies.
Carrie Underwood welcomes superstars to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena as she returns to host the 53rd Annual Country Music Association Awards, airing Wednesday, Nov. 13, on ABC. The CMA Awards have honored the outstanding work of country music recording artists, producers and other industry professionals since they were established in 1967, and the tradition continues with awards like Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year.
However, the CMA Awards will look a bit different this time around. Underwood has co-hosted the ceremony alongside Brad Paisley since 2008, but he won’t be taking the stage with Underwood this year. In August, it was announced that country music legends Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton would co-host with Underwood this year. While many of Paisley’s fans were no doubt disappointed, he was a true gentleman about the new arrangement, even tweeting his support after the news broke.
“As a fan of all 3 of these amazing women, I can’t wait to watch,” Paisley wrote on Twitter on Aug. 19. He isn’t the only one who’s excited. CMA executive Sarah Trahern expressed her appreciation for the trio in the official release about their hosting gig.
“It’s an incredible honor to welcome Carrie, Reba and Dolly to the CMA Awards stage this year,” Trahern said. “In addition to awarding the year’s best and brightest in the genre, the 53rd Annual CMA Awards will celebrate the legacy of women within country music and we couldn’t think of a more dynamic group of women to host the show.”
McEntire and Parton are no strangers to the CMA Awards. Country music’s most honored female performer of all time, Parton has won 11 CMAs, including the 2016 Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. To her credit, McEntire has snagged six CMA Awards, among
legend Dolly Parton set to take CMA Awards stage
many other awards over the course of her career. Both women have hosted the CMA Awards before. Parton took the helm in 1988, and McEntire was the show’s emcee from 1990 to 1992. Underwood has been outspoken about her desire to see more women in country music, and teaming up with two of the genre’s biggest female icons seems like the perfect opportunity to shine a light on the industry’s talented women.
It seems fitting that this year’s top nominee is also a woman. Maren Morris has earned six CMA Award nominations, including Female Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year for “Girl” and Album of the Year for “Girl.” She’s also up for Song of the Year (“Girl”), Music Video of the Year (“Girl”) and Musical Event of the Year (“All My Favorite People”). This isn’t her first CMA rodeo — the young singer/songwriter had 10 previous CMA nominations and one win for New Artist of the Year in 2016.
Country music duo Brothers Osborne have garnered four nominations this time around. T.J. Osborne and John Osborne are the reigning CMA Vocal Duo of the Year and they hope to hang on to the honor this year with another nomination in the category, which they’ve won three years running. They’re also up for Music Video of the Year and Single of the Year for their collaboration with Dierks Bentley on “Burning Man.” Interestingly, they share Morris’ nomination for Musical Event of the Year because they’re featured performers in “All My Favorite People.”
Eleven acts clocked in with three CMA Award nominations each, including host Underwood with Entertainer of the Year (the only woman in the running for that one), Female Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year (“Cry Pretty”). The only other woman on the list of triple nominees is critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Kacey Musgraves, who will go head to head against Underwood in the Female Vocalist of the Year category. She’s also been nominated for Song of the Year (“Rainbow”) and Music Video of the Year (“Rainbow”).
Dan + Shay were the only group to earn three CMA Award nods this year: Single of the Year (“Speech-
less”), Album of the Year (“Dan + Shay”) and Vocal Duo of the Year.
Fan favorite Blake Shelton will be vying for Single of the Year (“God’s Country”), Musical Event of the Year (“Dive Bar”) and Music Video of the Year (“God’s Country”). Scott Hen-
dricks has double the chances of winning Single of the Year with nominations for both “God’s Country” and “Speechless,” along with a nomination for Album of the Year for “Dan + Shay.” In addition to his nomination for Album of the Year
(“Center Point Road”), Dann Huff has two nominations for Musical Event of the Year (“Brand New Man,” “What Happens in a Small Town”).
With the biggest stars in the country music biz, including three
fabulous female hosts, this year’s ceremony should be a lot of fun to watch. Tune in as Underwood, McEntire and Parton celebrate country music in the 53rd annual Country Music Association Awards, airing Wednesday, Nov. 13, on ABC.
