First responders take on the worst in ‘9-1-1’
By Francis Babin TV MediaThisyear has been a big one for the television industry. It seems that every month a landscape-changing entertainment story breaks. But without a doubt, the most talked about game-changer of the year is the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney. There is no question that the mouse house’s purchase will be a topic of discussion, debate and analy sis for years to come.
It’s probably natural that Disney’s earliest Fox-related decisions have come under fire. Fox is the youngest of the Big Four television networks and has been a hotbed of controversy since its launch in the mid-’80s. Not long after the network first hit the air waves, the scrappy upstart launched a revolutionary new series and a pio neer in the reality TV genre: “Cops” premiered in 1989. The series proved to be a ratings juggernaut and quick ly became one of Fox’s most watched series, cementing its status as the edgy network.
That show’s impact on the enter tainment industry is undeniable, and its real-world effects are still being felt to this day. Now, three de cades after the network’s origi nal first-responder series pre
miered, industry darling Ryan Murphy (“The Politician”) has brought another first-responder series to the network, and “9-1-1” has become another major success story.
On Monday, Nov. 18, Fox presents another episode of this hit series, which takes viewers to the City of Angels to witness brave first responders in action. The show follows police officers, paramedics, firefighters and dispatchers on the job and at
are they immune to the stress or the mental and physical consequences of their profession. These heroes are human.
Over the past two seasons and change, we have seen some of our favorite characters put through the wringer. Firefighter Bobby Nash (Peter Krause, “Parenthood”), captain of LAFD Station 118, has battled his demons and attempted to overcome a tragic and complicated past. As he

She rises to every challenge and dedicates her life to saving others — but she doesn’t always exercise good judgment in her personal life.
Discussing the genesis of the series back in 2017, executive producer and co-creator Brad Falchuk (“Pose”) said, “The idea was everybody there is great at their jobs and have problems at home that they struggle with.” He continued by discussing how the series looks to explore the differences between characters when they’re in control on the job and when they’re at home with less power to control their surroundings. We have seen this play out time and time again since the series debuted — “9-1-1” has been filled with edgeof-your-seat emergencies and thrilling action but also packed with engaging and relatable storylines. Finding harmony between the two has not been an easy task, but it seems like Murphy and his crew have nailed the format and shaken up the firstresponder genre.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX: “The Crown” Season 3
On Sunday, Nov. 17, this awardwinning historical series that follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II returns for a third season. While the first two seasons focused on the early years of her reign (1947 to 1963), Season 3 tackles the events of 1964 to 1976 and features an all-new cast.
Oscar winner Olivia Colman (“Fleabag”) succeeds Claire Foy (“First Man,” 2018) as Queen Elizabeth; Tobias Menzies (“Outlander”) joins the cast as Prince Phillip in place of Matt Smith (“Dr. Who”); and Helena Bonham Carter (“Ocean’s 8,” 2018) takes over for Vanessa Kirby (“Me Before You,” 2016) as Princess Margaret. Showrunners have confirmed that the new season focuses more on the growing relationship between the Queen and Prime Minister Harold Wilson (Jason Watkins, “Trollied”) as the turmoil between her and Prince Phillip settles, and it includes many significant moments in history, such as the moon landing. Dive deeper into the Royal Family’s world of politics and drama when Season 3 of “The Crown” premieres this week.
“Nailed It! Holiday!” Season 2
Have you ever tried very hard to make a nice meal or dessert, only to have it fail horribly and have your kitchen look like a tornado hit it? Most of us have, and “Nailed It! Holiday!” is a cooking show that will make you feel better about every kitchen failure you’ve ever experienced. Season 2 premieres Friday, Nov. 22. This series comes at the cooking competition genre from the opposite direction of most — amateur bakers try to recreate professional holiday desserts in an effort to win $10,000, but in this show, contestants are chosen not for their skill but for their lack thereof. In each episode, hosts Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres are joined by celebrity guest judges, including Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids,” 2011), Jason Mantzoukas (“The Good Place”) and Jillian Bell (“Workaholics”). Watch as
these bakers destroy their kitchens and make drooping dreidels and sad Santas.
“Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings”
Living legend Dolly Parton joins Netflix in this new eight-part musical anthology series premiering Friday, Nov. 22 on the streamer. Each episode of the series focuses on a different Dolly Parton song and the story surrounding it, including “These Old Bones,” “Cracker Jack,” “Down From Dover” and, of course, “Jolene.” With Parton on board as an executive producer as well as actress and singer/songwriter, you can be sure the series will do her iconic songs justice. Many big names are set to star alongside Parton, including Julianne Hough (“Rock of Ages,” 2012), Ginnifer Goodwin (“Once Upon A Time”) and Gerald McRaney (“House of Cards”).
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU: “Booksmart” (2019)
On Monday, Nov. 18, this comingof-age high school comedy joins the Hulu lineup. As the end of senior year and graduation draw near, best friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever, “Last Man Standing”) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein, “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,” 2016) realize that their constant studying and avoiding parties may have been a waste as even the party kids got into prestigious colleges. Last year, Holly Hobbie traded in her signature bonnet for a guitar when Hulu launched their modernized live-action series, which portrays Holly (Ruby Jay, “The Unicorn”) as a 13-year-old singersongwriter. The series follows Holly as she tries to make a difference in her small town, support her friends and navigate teenage life, all while using real life as inspiration for her music. Season 2 premieres Friday, Nov. 22, and Holly’s world is getting more complicated with school, boys and bullies — music is her only outlet. Watch as Holly deals with the first criticisms of her music when the second season premieres this week.
girls agree to let go and be spontaneous for one night by going to their classmate’s end-of-year yacht party. They quickly get in over their heads, though, and the night gets even more strange when they are picked up by their principal (Jason Sudeikis, “Saturday Night Live”) via a ride-sharing program. Watch as two teenage girls fit four years worth of high school partying into one crazy night.

WHAT’S NEW ON AMAZON PRIME:
“The Feed”
Living in a society where people constantly share every detail of their life, whether it be on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, makes Amazon Prime’s newest original series “The Feed” seem very plausible. Premiering this Friday, Nov. 22, the series depicts a not-so-distant future where, thanks to the creation of a special brain implant called The Feed, humans are connected by instant recording and can share every human experience.
Guy Burnet (“Hand of God”) and Nina Toussaint-White (“EastEnders”) star as married couple Tom and Kate Hatfield, who try their best to avoid technology despite the fact that Tom’s father, Lawrence (David Thewlis, “Wonder Woman,” 2017), is the creator of The Feed and his mother, Meredith (Michelle Fairley, “Game of Thrones”), is the CEO and handles its daily operation. When a possible virus within The Feed suddenly starts causing its users to exhibit horribly violent tendencies, Tom must protect not only his wife and newborn daughter, but all of humanity, from his father’s invention. Jeremy Neumark Jones (“The Last Post”), Jing Lusi (“Crazy Rich Asians,” 2018) and Osy Ikhile (“The Legend of Tarzan,” 2016) also star.

A sweet parade: Maureen McCormick hosts ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Cake Spectacular’
By Michelle Rose TV MediaThere are parades, and then there’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This year marks the 95th anniversary of the Big Apple tradition that officially kicks off the eating, er, holiday season. And there’s something magical about seeing all those floats, marching bands and giant balloons making their way down 6th Avenue toward Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street in New York City.
(Fun fact: Macy’s Herald Square was the first building in the world to be equipped with modern escalators. You can still
ride the original wooden ones up to Santaland, or up one more floor to the couches, if you’re in town.)
But let’s talk food. Food Network has invited four top bakers to compete in the second edition of “Macy’s Thanksgiving Cake Spectacular,” airing Sunday, Nov. 17. And as the title suggests, they’ll be tasked with creating their best cake-and-sugar tribute to the annual spectacular.
The one-hour special debuted last year with lifestyle maven Martha Stewart as the host. In addition to the competition, viewers were treated to a sneak peek of the preparations at Macy’s Parade Studio in New Jersey,
where all the floats, balloons and costumes are readied until the day before the parade.
(Another fact: No matter its final size, each float must be able to fit through the Lincoln Tunnel — the same one Buddy the Elf walked through in 2003’s “Elf” — to reach the parade route. The floats are reconstructed overnight near the starting point on the Upper West Side.)
The culinary torch has been passed and this year’s host is Maureen McCormick of “The Brady Bunch” fame. With 12 days to go until Turkey Day and the parade, McCormick will help get you into the holiday spirit while competitors try to impress judges Buddy Valastro (“Cake Boss”),
Susan Tercero (executive producer of Macy’s parade) and last season’s winner, Timbo Sullivan.
The winning cake artist will be awarded a grand prize of $10,000 and a feature spot at Macy’s Herald Square.
They’ll also get tickets to the parade, which may seem odd given the opportunities for free public viewing along the route. But these are grandstand tickets, which aren’t available to the public. In fact, they’re limited to friends and family members of parade participants and Macy’s partners, and, of course, the winner of Food Network’s “Macy’s Thanksgiving Cake Spectacular.” Tune in on Nov. 17 to find out who it will be.
