There was no official physical office of the Chamber in the early days of the organization. General monthly meetings were held at the Pine River American Legion and later in the basement of the United Methodist Church where the church women would provide a delicious lunch to Chamber members. That changed in 1983, when due to the growth of the Chamber a building and land were secured alongside Highway 371, just south of the city. The building was used through the year 1999. In 1996, a committee of the Chamber began plans for a new, larger facility that would come to sit at the intersection of Highway 371 and Highway 84. The land was donated by the city of Pine River. Committee members became aware that Cass County was interested in donating mature red pine (Norway pine) logs to the center. The logs were 50 feet long and a plan for a log building was born. The logs were delivered with bark attached. The bark was peeled by Sentence To Serve folks from Cass County. After discussion, it was decided to build a structure featuring half-log construction on a frame. The logs were sawn to length and then in half. Three years passed before funding could be secured to 4

build the building. A building committee was formed to plan the new building. Through the grantwriting efforts of the committee, the project received a matching grant from the Federal Highway Department and the Initiative Foundation. Many local donations were received as well. The former information center was sold and those funds were put toward the new building. Hardy Construction was hired as the general contractor and Dale Weiss was contracted to do the log work on the building. Many local building tradesmen were hired to work with the cement, plumbing, electrical and parking lot parts of the project. Merle Nelson, a master plumber, acted as project supervisor throughout the building process. The new Information Center was dedicated with an open house on June 4, 2000. Many dignitaries attended, including the late U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, who was supportive of the project from the start. The late Terry McGaughey, who directed the building of the Paul Bunyan Trail, was also present to celebrate the new asset to the Pine River community and the area. Since that time the Pine River Information Center has welcomed thousands of visitors. John Wetrosky was hired as Chamber

Executive Director in 2000 and still serves in that capacity. The center has become an Explore Minnesota Affiliate Information Center and is able to distribute all Explore Minnesota information. The Pine River Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to stop by, view the historic displays inside and make use of the wonderful restrooms. All of the items displayed have been donated by area residents and reflect the history of Pine River and northern Minnesota. Bring your camera! John Wetrosky, Executive Director Pine River Chamber of Commerce

Pine River’s theme is “Plaid on Purpose” to celebrate the area’s heritage of logging, outdoor recreation and good, hardworking men and women. You’ll find street banners boasting the “Plaid on Purpose” theme and many folks in the Pine River area proud to be wearing “plaid on purpose.” Join us in wearing plaid!

Pine River Walking Tour

Sponsored & Organized by Heritage Group North, Inc., Pine River, MN Pine River began in 1873 when George Barclay opened a trading post on the Leech Lake Trail. In 1894 a logging railroad built north through “Barclay’s Ranch” attracted many

settlers and led to the formation of a city. Pine River’s original business district, near the railroad depot, has a rich and colorful history. The walking tour highlights some of the town’s more prominent downtown

structures, several of which no longer exist. Few of the buildings were designed by architects or built in a particular architectural style, yet people took pride in their buildings.

and a print shop in the basement. From 1917-20, classes for third and fourth grades of the Pine River School were taught here. The building’s more recent use as a Masonic Lodge hall and Eastern Star chapter ended in 2009.

hall closed in 1931 shortly after showing its first talking film and reopened in 1934 as the Marlow Theater. Over the years, the large theater building also housed a funeral parlor, beauty shop, pool hall, realty office, Laundromat and the offices of the Pine River Journal. The owners occupied an apartment behind the stage. The Marlow Theater was gutted by fire in 1980.

1. Pine River Railway Depot c. 1895 • 102 Barclay Ave. W. It is appropriate that the walking tour begins and ends here. The depot, erected in 1895, is the oldest building in Pine River and the only one in town deemed eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. A frame structure of simple utilitarian design, the depot underwent several changes through 1913 when a canopy and women’s waiting room were added and the station platform was paved with bricks. The depot was abandoned in 1985, and in 2009 it was relocated to a new site just across the track (the Paul Bunyan Trail) from where it stood for 114 years. The railroad played an active role in attracting immigrants and encouraging settlement.

3. First State Bank Building c. 1903 • 200 Barclay Ave. The brick building was erected in 1903 for the First State Bank of Pine River, the town’s first bank. The bank later got a national charter before hard times led to its merger with a competing bank in 1924. For more than 100 years this building also housed a series of drugstores, early on in the same room as the bank! The building also hosted a basement barber shop and Pine River’s post office. The large pillars originally at the front of the building now form the entry of the old Pine Ridge Cemetery south of town.

4. Hill Hardware Building c. 1916 • 204 Barclay Ave.

2. Cozy Theater/Newspaper Office c. 1915 • 109 First St. S. The Cozy Theater, the town’s first theater, occupied the small, “cozy,” upper floor of this concrete-block building before the era of talkies (movies with soundtracks). In its day the Cozy hosted theatrical performances and recitals and showed silent films. Privies flanked the alley-side of the building. An early town newspaper, the Pine River Sentinel-Blaze, had offices 14

Hill’s Hardware began in a nearby lumber yard in the early 1900s, and later moved to a wood frame structure on Barclay Avenue. When that building burned in 1916, it was replaced by a modern masonry building on the adjacent lot. The hardware store operated until 1971, and in 1973 the building became part of Silbaugh’s Department Store. The building now houses River Fitness.

5. Memorial Hall/Marlow Theater c. 1920 • 240 Barclay Ave. Memorial Hall was built in 1919-20 to provide rooms for meetings, stage shows and dancing, and showing silent movies (accompanied by a lively piano). The site was previously a boat shop and lumberyard. The

6. United Methodist Church c. 1902 • 348 Barclay Ave. The Methodist Church was the first church organized in Pine River. Lots were purchased from city founder Ammarilla Barclay in 1902 for $2, and a missionary grant was secured for church construction. Building the wood-frame church took several years and was hampered when lightning twice struck the bell tower, the second time cracking the bell. The church was dedicated in 1907. The belfry was refurbished in 2009. The beautiful stained glass windows are best viewed from the church interior.

7. Pine River Dam c. 1910 • River Street Pine River’s homes and businesses were originally lit by oil or gas lamps. In 1910, a dam and hydroelectric plant were built at the head of Barclay Avenue (replacing a bridge that formerly stood there). It was the first major electrical generating plant in rural Cass and Crow Wing counties, and by 1920 it provided electrical power to other outlying communities including Backus, Jenkins, Pequot and Nisswa. Use of the plant was discontinued in 1946 and the equipment and powerhouse were later removed. The swimming facilities above the dam were developed as a W.P.A. project in 1938.

8. Pine River Public School/ Pine River Clinic  c. 1903 • 403 Barclay Ave. In 1903, a two-story, wood-frame school house was built on this corner lot to accommodate Pine River’s high school and elementary classes. Although enlarged in 1905, the school was just too small for the rapidly growing population. The school was razed in the late 1920s after a new and much larger school was built two blocks to the northwest. In 1950, a one-story stucco medical clinic opened on the site of the old school. After years of service, the clinic was torn down in the early 2000s.

9. Lindberg Building c. 1911 • 303 Barclay Ave. This two-story concrete-block building was built in the 1910s as a general merchandising store. Such new-fangled department stores were typically housed in large buildings and sold almost every product imaginable from clothes and furniture to groceries and toys. Later owners ended the handling of food products to concentrate on the sale of soft goods. Over the years businesses here were affiliated with Skogmos and V-Stores. Until recently, the building was home to NAPA automotive. Apartments occupy the second floor.

A project funded by the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants Program.

10. Bert Michener’s Auto Garage/Houston Motor c. 1920 • 245 Barclay Ave. Michener’s garage was built here in 1920. The “grand opening” featured a Japanese operetta presented by the Pine River School. After the garage burned in 1950, it was replaced by a Ford-Mercury dealership and garage run by the Houston Motor Co. In the late 1950s, Houston’s also sold diving gear and filled SCUBA tanks. Houston’s relocated south of town after 1973. The remodeled building is now occupied by small businesses and the Pine River-Backus Family Center.

11. Farmers State Bank Building c. 1917 • 203 Barclay Ave. When this two-story brick building was built in 1917, the street-level corner of the building was occupied by the Farmers State Bank. Later, the Pine River State Bank conducted business in the same space until 1974. Among original occupants was a pharmacy on Barclay Avenue, and a furniture store and funeral parlor on the First Street side. The second floor once contained professional offices and apartments. continued on page 16

“filling station” in town. The Pine River Oil Company Phillips 66 occupied the same corner for many years. Later a new building was constructed and occupied by Tom Thumb.

The Gardiner family has operated businesses at this location since 1935. The original back addition to the building was destroyed by fire in 1973.

12. Pine River Army Reserve Armory c. 1921 • 200 Front St. N. In 1921 Pine River was home to one of the first Army Reserve armories in Minnesota, and it was the smallest town in the United States to have an armory. The armory was constructed of concrete blocks made onsite by the resourceful and legendary local builder “Pop” Evans. Almost 2,000 people attended the dedication in May 1922 that featured an address by Minnesota Gov. J.A.O. Preus. The state ceded the armory to the city of Pine River in 1939. The upper floor of the armory contained a stage and a basketball court flanked by bleachers. During the 1950s the basement level held sixth-grade classrooms and the school lunchroom. The city office and fire hall occupied the north end of the building. The armory was razed in 1974.

13. Horse-Drawn Fire Engine c. 1919 • 102 Barclay Ave. W. This vehicle, a horse-drawn Waterous #6 Class B gasoline fire engine with a Waukesha motor, was built for the city of Pine River in 1919. Until 1940 this was the sole engine for the village. It remained in use as an auxiliary engine until its retirement in the mid-1950s. The display shelter was erected by Heritage Group North in 2010.

14. Pine River Legion Club c. 1947 • 400 Front St. S. The Fraser-Nelson Post 613 of the American Legion was organized on March 11, 1947, at the Marlow Club rooms in the Marlow Theater. Col. Robert Miller of the 147th Field Artillery of Brainerd, a prisoner of war in the Bataan, 16

urged the organization of a Legion Post in Pine River. An American Legion Post had been organized in the early 1920s but had been disbanded before World War II. No information about this group was located.

15. Bill Day’s Welding Shop c. 1947 • 206 Front St. S. Bill Day’s Welding Shop occupied this site for many years. The original blacksmith shop that once stood on Barclay Avenue to the north of the Livery and later the Spurrier Hotel was built by Dave Jones in 1902. Succeeding owners were Al Seper, Bill Rohr, Christensen, W.C. (Bill) Day. The original building was later moved to this site and was torn down in 1947.

16. Pine River Locker Plant c. 1928 • 200 Front St. S. The Pine River Locker Plant and Kouba’s Souvenir shop sat on this location. The Locker Plant was built in 1928 by H.I. Davies as the Pine River Seed House. Originally it had been the site of the old Wideman Brothers store. The building was sold in the early 1930s but continued to serve as a feed store under Frank Marsh and Homer Fraser until 1945 when Arvid Lundin bought the building. Siefert and Gartner bought out Lundin in 1948 and established the locker business.

19. Spurrier Hotel c. 1917 • 103 Barclay Ave. The Spurrier Hotel, later called the Lake Region Hotel, was built in 1917 and stood until 1964 when it was torn down to make way for the eventual Highway 371 widening.

20. Durkee Manufacturing Co. c. 1940 • 173 Barclay Ave. W. Durkee’s Manufacturing Plant, built in 1940, as well as a feed store established in 1916 occupied this location. “Working at Durkees” was a solid career for many local men from 1940 to 1985, with about 150 employees benefiting from the town’s largest local industry. The plant manufactured Wooden Spools for telephone cable, etc.

21. Wefelmeyer Pickle Factory c. 1918 • 201 Park Ave. W. The Wefelmeyer Pickle Factory once sat on this site. By 1925, which saw “the biggest cucumber crop ever” harvested in the region, Wefelmeyer and Thiessen had main offices in Pine River and “salting stations” in many surrounding communities. Under the name “Queen Brand,” pickles were sold in railcar load lots to local packers throughout the United States.

17. Barclay Hotel “White Elephant” c. 1894 • 112 Front St. S. The original Barclay Hotel was the hub of activity for passengers arriving by train. The Hotel Barclay or Barclay House, also known as the “White Elephant,” was built for George Barclay in 1894. It burned in December 1915 in a fire that threatened the whole town.

18. First “Filling Station” c. 1920 • 100 Front St. S. Pine River’s first “filling station” was built by Vic Sauer. Though gasoline had been available at the village garages, Sauer’s Pyramid station was the original

22. Our Lady of Lourdes c. 1910 • 205 Park Ave. This was the original location of Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church, established in 1910. The parish moved into its current location across the alley in 1958.

23. Pine River School c. 1913 • 309 Jefferson Ave. The Pine River School, both elementary and the high school, were housed in a building on this location beginning in 1913. The combination elementary/high school building was built in 1920. This location was the “home of the Pine River Tigers” until 1961 when the new high school was built in its current location.

309 Second St. N., this building was converted for apartment usage.

25. Tabernacle Church  c. 1954 • 304 Norway Ave. The original Tabernacle Church was housed in a small log-sided building. The history of the Riverview Tabernacle goes back to about 1935 when interested Pine River residents met at the Mae Davis home for fellowship and prayer.

26. Community Oil c. 1936 • 400 Barclay Ave. Moulster’s Service Station, which later became Community Oil, was established here in 1936. This is the original building.

Stand quietly here a minute and you can almost hear the sound of the 1960s — the Beatles, the muscle car engines and the car-hop orders of “Two root beers and an order of fries!”

28. Pine River Creamery Company c. 1913 • 409 Norway Ave. The Pine River Creamery, later Land O’Lakes Creamery, was established in 1913. The Pine River Feed Store sat on the opposite side of this corner. Bringing milk to the creamery and grain to be weighed at the feed store were daily/ weekly activities for the local farmers.

27. Damsite Bait and Tackle c. 1914 • 417 Barclay Ave. 24. First Lutheran Church c.1907 • 300 Norway Ave. This building was originally the Pine River Lutheran Church. When the Lutheran congregation built its new church and moved to its location at

The Damsite Bait and Tackle shop sat on this location, established in 1914. The A&W Root Beer Stand, which originally sat on Highway 371 next to the Lake Region (Spurrier) Hotel, was moved to this location in 1963 when the Highway 371 widening project began.

Pine River area history has been preserved with the historic Pine River Railway Depot located near the Chamber Information Center and along the Paul Bunyan State Trail. Owned and managed by the nonprofit Heritage Group North, the depot is the only property in Pine River to ever be listed on the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. A plaque proclaiming this achievement hangs on the exterior of the historic depot. The depot is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, May 25-Aug. 24, as well as on Heritage Days Saturday, Sept. 7. An old-fashioned ladies tea fundraiser is held at the depot each year, this year on Sept. 5, and historic films are shown there on occasion throughout the year. Built in 1895, the original depot building underwent various additions and alterations until about 1913. Since 1913, it remained essentially unchanged, except for removal of the canopy over the open-air waiting area

Happy Dancing Turtle/Hunt Utilities Group Resilient and sustainable living are key

Happy Dancing Turtle, a nonprofit, and Hunt Utilities Group, a research and development company, are based in Pine River on the Hunt Utilities Group Resilient Living Campus. They are host to research usually reserved for universities, events usually found in large cities and innovations usually expected from wealthy corporations. Happy Dancing Turtle (HDT) is known for its long-running event, Back to Basics (B2B). B2B is an event focused on sustainable living co-hosted and held at Pine RiverBackus Schools. B2B is dedicated to educating participants on topics like solar energy, beekeeping, gardening, soap making, raising chickens and many other popular topics. This annual event - slated Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 - includes a huge vendor fair, keynote, kids’ program and more. HDT also teaches children about sustainability through camps, in-school and after-school activities, and other programs. HDT’s Eco Camp began 12 years ago to teach the youngest in the community about nature, healthy living, critical thinking

and fascinating scientific concepts. In 2016, HDT added Turtle Treks, overnight camping experiences, for students in second through eighth grades. In addition to these programs, HDT aims to educate students and adults about soil health and how it’s critical to nutritious, tasty vegetables and healthy people. Happy Dancing Turtle began as the brainchild of Paul and Lynn Hunt. The Hunts had relocated from Pequot Lakes to Pine

River, where they built the Hunt Utilities Group (HUG) Resilient Living Campus as a research campus to focus on testing environmentally sustainable building practices. There, they founded HDT. “We researched other ways to build houses, buildings, technology and we are still doing that,” Lynn Hunt said. “As we are doing that we research new things and we are still striving for another product that will be able to build the resilience of our neighbors and community.” The Hunts have trialed and continue testing building methods like strawbale, structurally insulated panels, dense-packed cellulose and more - going so far as to construct Minnesota homes that cost $53.70 per month to heat during the winter. Research has also included sustainable water processing practices and cold fusion. It all began with research. Paul and Lynn Hunt were the minds behind some of the technology used today for remote metering of home electricity. Their invention, the “Turtle,” helped eliminate the need for fleets of meter readers in remote parts of the country. “The same technology that allowed faster and faster technology allowed you to turn it backwards and go slower,” Lynn said. “When you take a signal and go slower, you are able to go through a lot more noise (interference).” By moving very small data packages very slowly, the Hunts’ technology could be used to transmit meter information through power lines. The sale of the resulting company - Hunt Technologies - made HUG and HDT possible. Paul and Lynn were recognized for their contributions to and efforts on behalf of the community in late 2017 with the Brainerd Lakes Chamber Business Legacy Award. PINE RIVER CHAMBER

and the Pine River Area Foundation. The fair board is continuing to work with these groups to constantly upgrade the grounds. In the future they hope to re-side all buildings and possibly install heat. Otherwise, updates are always necessary. “Some of the major updates we need are continual electrical updates just because it was so outdated,” Foster said. “A lot of these campers, RVs, food trucks and bands - the amount of power they need now versus 15

26

years ago is significant. We’ll continue to add those.” Foster also hopes to attract more groups to the fairgrounds for year-round use, possibly for more high school rodeo events, group gettogethers, overnight camping, auctions and many other community events. For a property with stages, food buildings, animal stalls and display space, the possibilities are endless “I think it could be utilized a lot more than it is,” Foster said.

The Cass County Fairgrounds on the north end of Pine River are well known for hosting the annual Cass County Fair, but the fun is not limited to one week per year. In addition to the popular fair, the community brings the fairgrounds to life for other events throughout the year. The grounds have been used for: • The Lakes Bluegrass Festival. • A traveling circus. • The community garage sale. • Wedding receptions and reunions. • Camping for traveling groups. • A National Night Out event. • Mounted Posse patrol training. • A fall Baja rally. • Rodeo events. To keep this valuable community asset in shipshape, improvements are constantly being made, including an agriculture building along with building and animal enclosure renovations and updates in 2018, and electrical system updates and improvements along with improvements to the horse arena and crow’s nest in 2017. The community’s needs for the grounds have changed over the years, and the fairgrounds have changed with them to accommodate larger animals, electrical demands and events like the 14-year-old Lakes Bluegrass Festival, which required construction of a band shell. As was true when the grounds were first built, the community and volunteers were vital in making the grounds what they are today. “I think for over 100 years the fair has been an event for Cass County,” said Terri Foster, president of the Cass County Agricultural Association. “Those buildings were put up by the local community and county members. It’s a labor of love. Everything that’s been done has been pretty much done through volunteer labor hours. You look at those buildings and the amount of hours and time people have spent. Clearly their hearts were in the right place and they wanted to do something for the surrounding community and Pine River as well as the fair board.” Recent fairground updates often combined efforts of multiple organizations for donations, volunteer work or grant-writing efforts. Among others, the fair board has worked with: the Pine River-Backus School District, Pequot Lakes School District, Cass County 4-H, Cass County Farm Bureau, Pine River Lions Club

Pine River History

New tenant uncovers hidden architecture Longtime residents of Pine River almost certainly felt a little sad at the August closing of the Plaid Duck Art Mall on Barclay Avenue downtown, but who could have guessed that renovations for a fitness center would reveal beautiful architecture from almost a century ago? For 71 years one member or another of Walt and Jeannette Silbaugh’s family owned a business in the building. Walt and Jeannette owned Silbaugh’s Department Store until 1978, when it was purchased by their daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and John Wetrosky. In August 2018, the Wetroskys sold the building to Sharon Gensmer, of River Fitness. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Gensmer has worked in the building. She was once an employee at Silbaugh’s. “I was here just about a year. I know at that time they had a lot of on-the-job training students,” Gensmer said. As a Pine River resident, she also remembered the Silbaughs fondly. “Jackie’s father, Walt, and mother, Jeanette, were really sweet, amazing people,” Gensmer

said. “Most of the people who lived here, like my husband, remember them being the most charming, kind people, even for little kids.” Since its inception, the store went through name changes, moves and renovations. What was once a small Gilchrist and Geary surplus and furniture store in a basement of the Masonic Lodge on First Street behind the 371 Station had moved onto Barclay Avenue into two commercial lots. One was once home

to the Hill Hardware Store. A surprise was in order for Gensmer when she removed the suspended ceiling of the old Hill Hardware space and tore up the carpet. “We brought down a suspended ceiling and found a beautiful tin ceiling,” Gensmer said. “We brought up the carpet and found over 100-year-old wood. Of course it was covered with the most mastic, horrible glue. It was a month of sanding.” The historic building materials completely derailed Gensmer’s original plans for the room, but they also opened a world of possibilities. “This room took on a life of its own,” Gensmer said. “When we started uncovering things and saw the potential, it got exciting and we realized we needed to get past what we had in mind for renovation because it seemed to have its own story. We turned it into a ballroom, trying to keep the finishes a little nicer and less gym-like than the fitness side and definitely changed the lighting to be more conducive to things like yoga.” The ballroom space will be used for classes in the River Fitness building, such as martial arts, yoga and a ballet-based class. At other times the space will be available for community use, exposing the historic tin ceiling and hardwood floors once again to the public for possible dances and community gatherings, though Gensmer is always looking for more classes and instructors. “I’ve had a couple people approach me about fundraisers for the city,” Gensmer said. “We definitely are fit and set for ballroom type dances and fundraisers. We would love to do classes. It’s always about finding an instructor for whatever our customers’ interests are.”

mystery and the case is still open today. (This information is from “Logsleds to Snowmobiles,” Pine River’s centennial book)

George Angus Barclay established the first permanent trading post on the Pine River. From this site grew the village that eventually took the name of the river and became Pine River. Pine River is located where the two main tributaries of the Pine River form a majestic stream that eventually flows into the Mississippi River. The peppery Scotsman founded the village in 1873. He and his brother served under William T. Sherman during the Civil War. The trading post was later followed by a hotel. The railroad came shortly after. This area of Minnesota has been known to have held “the richest stand of timber in the Old Northwest” and the river was memorialized by early explorers as “The Pine.” The area was historically noted for its huge stands of white and red (Norway) pine. The countertop in the information center is made of a white pine tree that was harvested from a farmer’s yard southwest of Pine River. It is approximately 180 years old. Pine River is part of Minnesota’s Paul Bunyan GeoTour. The Paul Bunyan State Trail, named for the legendary large logger, is arguably Minnesota’s favorite paved trail for hiking, biking, inline skating and snowmobiling. Don’t forget you can also use the trail for geocaching. In fact, the Paul Bunyan Trail is a geocache "Power Trail" with over 900 sites along the 110-mile trail that stretches from Brainerd to Bemidji. You can even find many of the geocaches on the Paul Bunyan GeoTour in the winter. What is geocaching? Geocaching is a free outdoor treasure hunt where players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS. They can then share their experiences online. Specifically, the meaning of the word “geocaching” refers to “GEO” for geography and “CACHING,” the process of hiding a cache. A cache is a term used in hiking/

camping as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions. This high-tech sport is for those who love technology, nature and adventure.

Feel like taking a scenic drive? We have the perfect route for you! Find your fill of Paul Bunyan lore along the 54-mile Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway that will take you through 14 jurisdictions, including Pine River, Jenkins, Crosslake, Manhattan Beach, Breezy Point and Pequot Lakes. Take your time and stop to explore hiking and walking trails, parks, gardens and lakes, wildlife management areas and historical artifacts. You’ll find the scenic byway an excellent place to go birding as well. Along the way you’ll find interpretive panels at multiple kiosk locations, including one at the Pine River Dam at River Street and Barclay Avenue. The kiosk panels present a mix of Paul Bunyan lore and area history in stories written with wit and whimsy. The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association manages the route and explains its designation as a state and national scenic byway at www.paulbunyanscenicbyway.org. Crow Wing County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 16 is the spine of the scenic byway. At the intersection with CSAH 66, the route travels both north around the Whitefish Chain and south along the north side of Pelican Lake. It connects with the Paul Bunyan Trail in four locations considered gateways, at CSAH 16, at CSAH 11, and at CSAH 15 in Crow Wing County and at CSAH 1 in Cass County. More than 100 resources that are valued for their cultural, historic, recreational, natural, scenic or archaeological value have been identified along the 54-mile route. PINE RIVER CHAMBER

Essentia Health Pine River Clinic

Clinic expands services while awaiting new facility While awaiting construction of a new building, Essentia Health St. Joseph’s-Pine River Clinic has expanded services offered at the facility on Barclay Avenue in downtown Pine River. Essentia Health announced plans to expand services for the Pine River marketplace through construction of a new building with more staff and services in 2017. “We’ve drawn up preliminary design plans,” said Essentia Health Clinic Administrator Bill Palmer. “We’ve made a lot of progress on that. We’re right now actively studying and doing our analysis around building a new clinic there. Right now what we’ve really focused on is trying to expand some of our current services in our current clinic. “We’ve added some additional specialty care there in a limited way. One area has been in podiatry. We’ve started some podiatry outreach,” Palmer said. “The other is we have started some OB-GYN outreach. All of those have more ability to be expanded if we have more space in a new clinic setting, but we wanted at least to try to move forward with bringing some additional access to

specialty services to the community.” Construction project plans once estimated a 2017 groundbreaking, but as is often the case with projects of this size, plans slowed down to accommodate a changing economy and marketplace. “There was some uncertainty in the reimbursement environment on both the state and federal level,” Palmer said. “The timing was such that it made sense to hold

to get a little more clarity on what that looks like.” In 2017, Essentia Health purchased a seven-acre lot from Lynn and Paul Hunt to make room for the projected 15,000- to 18,000-square-foot building. That would be enough to house more doctors, more nurses, new specialists and services. While no plans have been finalized for what the building would look like or what it would contain, Palmer said the new facility is still a high priority and he is optimistic for a groundbreaking in the near future. “We’re still actively planning and analyzing that,” Palmer said. “We’ve targeted a potential timeline of still possibly breaking ground late spring or during the summer (2019). That’s still a tentative timeline. We still have to go through and complete the processes that we need to do on an organizational level to make that happen.” The current building houses two physicians and two nurse practitioners with plans to expand the staff at the new location by at least one more physician and possibly more nurse practitioners.

Pine River-Backus Schools Looking at a bright future in solar

The Pine River-Backus School District continued its tradition of early adoption of technology in the fall of 2018 with the installation of thousands of solar panels on school property. The installation was the culmination of years of planning for a partnership between PR-B, Pequot Lakes School District and Central Lakes College in which the schools each install solar panels, paid for by New Energy Investor, a tax credit investor who will sell electricity to the schools at a reduced rate. The savings were estimated at $9,979 per year to the PR-B School District, though savings could increase if electricity rates increase. The installation also ties into curriculum at the schools as students have the opportunity now to see solar power in action on the school campus. “I think it’s exciting,” said PR-B Superintendent Dave Endicott. “We have had a lot of people working hard to make this come to fruition. (Former Superintendent) Cathy Bettino started this process before I came on board, so to see that it is going to become who we are, I think, is exciting from a lot of different aspects. “One, obviously is the cost savings that can come from generating that energy. Two, is just being mindful of our resources

and how we take care of the place where we live by having renewable energy like that,” Endicott said. The Pine River-Backus School District is eyeing facility improvements for

2019 to enhance the Pine River-Backus educational experience. The district boasts an enrollment of 935 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Pine River-Backus Athletes Volleyball team sees success on the court

The Pine River-Backus Tiger volleyball team - just one of many athletic opportunities the school offers - has been on a roll the past few years, posting successful seasons. In 2018, the team narrowly missed out on a second state tournament berth, falling to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the section championship, but its season was far from unsuccessful as the team amassed a 28-3 record. The Tigers lost their first game of the season to Cannon Falls, then 24 games came and went before they lost another, falling to Brainerd. This came after a 2017 that featured a state tournament appearance, with every athlete from that team returning for the 2018 season. A primary reason for this success over the past two seasons, if you ask the athletes, was communication and teamwork, which came easily. “We all get along so well together,” senior Bailey Wynn said. “There is no drama or anything like that. We stay together after

practice and work for a half hour. I think the fact that we get along so well makes it easier for us to play together, get better together and be successful.” The team of 14 girls, coming off one of the best finishes in team history, did its best to improve an already solid team, working out together in the mornings before school

and often staying an additional half hour after practice. Not only had they improved physically through this routine, but teammates say they have greatly improved their team chemistry as well. “If I compared my relationship to the girls from last year to this year, it has enhanced so much,” senior Gabby Rainwater said. “I don’t even feel like the younger girls are younger. We communicate well and respond to each other well. We know each other’s personality much better this year.” While the 2018 team was anchored by its five seniors - Wynn, Rainwater, Alyssa Semmler, Anna Downie and Ellie Smith - with a few juniors and all-conference sophomore Rylie Hirschey, the team felt contributions from virtually everyone on the roster during its win streak. During their 24-game win streak, the Tigers rattled off impressive victories against a number of successful teams, including a close 3-2 victory over Pequot Lakes in the PR-B gym. Perhaps the Tigers’ top performance came against Park Rapids - the 11th-ranked team in Class 2A at the time - when they won 3-1. “That might be my favorite (of the season),” Rainwater said. “We just played so well together.” While their season was a successful one, for the team’s five seniors, it went by too quickly. “This season is something I have really cherished,” Wynn said. “I remember being in eighth grade and thinking, ‘I have time,’ but now that it’s here I’m wondering, ‘Where did that time go?’ I’m holding on to every little thing.”

Muriel Erickson, longtime Pine River Public Library branch manager, and her second-in-command, Browser the Library Cat, turned over the keys to the Pine River Public Library to Tami Beto toward the end of 2018. Erickson worked at the library for 32 years. Approximately 16 years into that time she was joined by the library’s famous mascot, Browser, who was taken into the library as a kitten while the staff and volunteers moved the library into the new building. Beto also has years of service in the library world. She worked at Wells Public Library for eight years, and as a volunteer for several years before that. The library is expected to continue with all of its popular programming, including thematic summer reading programs, Snow Time To Read winter reading challenges, author visits, Cupcake Wars fundraiser, Legacy programming, and workshops. Beto, who has specialized in crafting escape rooms in the past, says she has some other fun event ideas to add to the tried and true. Browser left with Erickson, though both are expected to make appearances at future library events. Pine River Regional Airport A valuable gateway to the community

Pine River is home to a burgeoning regional airport that boasts a fixed base operator along with services for engine repair, flight instruction, aerial photos and more through Pine River Aermotor and Pfingsten Aviation. The Pine River City Council and Federal Aviation Administration are dedicated to maintaining the airport. More than 90 percent of recent updates were FAA funded. Those projects include installation of a snow equipment removal building, security lights, electrical hook-ups, runway maintenance and complete renovation of parking aprons. In more than 60 years, the airport in Pine River went from a grass runway west of town

to a 3,000-foot by 75-foot paved runway with 44 hangars and 24-hour/seven-days-a-week fuel pumps. Pine River’s airport dates back to the

1950s, when the runways were first plowed and graded at a site west of Pine River, off Highway 2. World War II veterans who came home with a thirst for flight used the airport. They were often rough-and-tumble aviators who used their planes to scout deer populations and pull pranks on oncoming trains at night. The airport was moved to its location today to make room for a golf course. In 1993, the runways were paved and an instrument approved GPS approach was installed. Since that time, the runways at the airport have been valuable gates into the Pine River community for consumers from sometimes far-off places.

Pine River is home to Lakes Area best

When the smoke cleared following the last round of voting for the 2018 Best of the Brainerd Lakes, many Pine River businesses found themselves in the winner’s circle including three that claimed the gold in their categories.

Sweet Cars in Pine River apparently leaves an impression on locals, which one can attest to by the sheer number of “Sweet Cars” stickers on vehicles in the Lakes Area. Quite possibly, that’s how Tim Sweet’s business was able to claim the top spot in the car

dealership category. Speaking of sweet, Pine River Bakery, crowned by Dawn Foods as the 2017 Sweetest Bakery in Minnesota, once again rose to the top as the best bakery in the Best of the Brainerd Lakes. “It was exciting to win again,” said owner Julie Sigafus. “It was all Facebook and internet. I posted something different daily and got the results. People were excited. They kept coming in asking when they were going to know.” Also known for their dessert, Bites Grill & Bar claimed third in that category, but also was recognized as the best small company to work for with under 50 employees. Owner Roger Hoplin thinks both his employees and his customers helped Bites win the award due to the number of long-term jobs he has provided over the years. “It was pretty exciting to be the best of any of that stuff,” Hoplin said. “I think it’s because there are a lot of places that are short-handed. We haven’t advertised for help in four years. We’ve been thankful we’ve been able to keep a lot of people and been able to work with a lot of people through high school and college on. That’s been good.” The Best of the Brainerd Lakes contest offered the opportunity to recognize area businesses by voting for them in 117 categories. More than 138,000 votes were cast to select top three winners in each category.
