WE’RE GONNA GET MARRIED! BY SUE SMITH-GRIER
That sentiment holds special meaning for all the couples who had to scrap wedding plans last year due to lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. The Brainerd lakes area is home to some of the most sought-after wedding venues in the state and in some cases the Midwest. Postponing weddings last year was a necessity and hard-felt blow to couples and venues alike. But, like the wise old sage said, “This too shall pass.” 2021 got off to a rocky start, but as the wedding season approaches, the sailing may not be quite as smooth as pre-pandemic days, but there will be sailing. This promises to be one of the busiest years for area wedding destinations as venues are now open for business. A Different Kind of Celebration The pandemic is not over and things can change from minute to minute but for now couples can look forward to saying their vows among family and friends. Some popular sites are scaling down a bit to accommodate social distancing practices and guests will need to wear masks, but the good news is the weddings are on. This is especially good news for all those couples who had to scuttle their plans last year. Some resorts, like Madden’s on Gull Lake, were able to have small outdoor celebrations last year. This year, along with events in the outdoor pavilion, they will also be able to accommodate indoor parties. Like other venues, they will be following COVID-19 guidelines as set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization. Bonnie Stroinski, director of marketing and group services for Breezy Point Resort, said, “Dancing will be allowed, but guests will need to wear masks.” She also pointed out that tables will be spaced according to social distancing guidelines. Most wedding locations are following the same protocols and guests are encouraged to stay within their household bubbles and limit close contact time with people outside their bubble. Expect to see staff wearing masks and encouraging social distancing practices at the different resorts. Some resorts, like Grand View Lodge, have a prerecorded message detailing their COVID-19 response. The different venues will have updates as they become available. Following Protocol Many places will be fully open by June 1 with the main difference from past years being a scaledown in occupancy and masks required for staff and guests. Occupancy numbers are in accordance with
the guidelines provided by the governor’s office and Centers for Disease Control protocol. Sanitation is another way in which venues will be keeping guests safe. Grand View Lodge will have all types of water sports available and lounging on the beach. This year, everything will be wiped down and sanitized after use by guests. Asked about following protocol, Crow Wing County Fairgrounds Manager Gary Doucette said, “We are all adults and by now everyone knows what to do to stay safe.” By the time the wedding season gets into full swing many people will have had vaccinations and between following social distancing practices and wearing masks the chances of contracting COVID-19 should be the lowest they have been since the beginning of the pandemic. Preparing Staff Some venues, like Breezy Point Resort, are taking extra steps to make sure their staff members are fully trained to handle face-to-face encounters. Their staff will be taking a COVID Compliance Advisor class as well as following Centers of Disease Control and Department of Health guidelines. “As we progress through the year, we’re feeling really good about meetings and face-to-face events,” said Stroinski. Making History While all the changes may be inconvenient and somewhat frustrating, there is another way to view it. When your descendants look at your wedding pictures and see the wedding party in beaded and sequined masks and masks that match the tuxedos, you can tell them all about the great pandemic of 2020-21. This era will be in the history books and you and yours will have unique pictures to mark your place. Your wedding will be one of the most memorable of all time. 2021 Weddings North | 11

GRATITUDE ABOUNDS BY SUE READY
We all can agree 2020 was not a normal year for wedding planning with a global pandemic, a variety of COVID-19 restrictions and ever-changing state mandates. Brianna Argir always had a very clear vision of her perfect wedding day. “I wanted a September outdoor wedding and a reception in a shed or barn of some kind.” And that’s exactly what she ended up with on Sept. 11, 2020, when she married Peyton Argir though a bit of drama did lead up to the nuptials. What Brianna did not factor in wedding planning was getting COVID three weeks before her wedding and being quarantined for two of those weeks. Brianna had no clue on Aug. 15, the day of her bachelorette party with friends and bridesmaids, she had COVID. She was not diagnosed until Aug. 17. With a wedding looming some three weeks away, Brianna was filled with

many moments of panic. Still ahead were many last minute wedding preparations needing her attention. Worst case scenario, she and Peyton considered the possibility of canceling and rescheduling for 2021. Fortunately for Brianna, major help came in the form of mom, sister and aunt. “My mom and sister were very much on the same page

with each other and knew exactly what I wanted and how picky I am about things.” Brianna’s mom, Debbie Herron, and sister Cheylin, communicated frequently through FaceTime with her over reception decorations and flower colors. Cheylin took time off from work to help with planning, noting, “It was stressful for Brianna who had to envision 18 | 2021 Weddings North
what we were doing through FaceTime and pictures. Due to COVID a lot of places were closed, forcing us to do a lot of last minute online ordering.” Brianna was fortunate to have so many other family members and friends reach out to make sure she was feeling OK and checking to see what was needed. But for Brianna, hands down, her mom was
the one she had to lean on the most to get through all of this. “She’s always so good at calming me down and looking at the reality of things,” Brianna said. During quarantine, Brianna had a period where breathing was difficult and her chest always felt heavy. Her sense of smell and especially taste are still to this day not the same. She is so grateful
Peyton never got COVID. The safety of the guests was a priority. The outdoor wedding was held at The Woods in Brainerd followed by an outdoor reception at Brianna’s stepgrandparent’s home. Since both events were outdoors, guests were able to make their own decision over mask wearing. Hand sanitizers were available at several 2021 Weddings North | 19

locations. The bridal party, friends who were at the bachelorette party and Peyton, were all retested prior to the wedding day to make sure everyone was still negative. Brianna’s advice for couples wedding planning is to “be sure both of you are on the same page. Find the things that are non-negotiable in planning. Always keep your best interests before anything else. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is that the two of you are happy and things are the way you want them.”

CONSIDER ZERONA PROCEDURE FOR THE PERFECT WEDDING DAY BY PETE MOHS A wedding day is one of the biggest events in the lives of a bride and groom. The couple wants to look their best and they celebrate an occasion they will remember forever. One procedure that is popular with brides and grooms is a non-invasive weight loss laser treatment that makes you slimmer and feel healthier. That service is offered locally by Northern Hope Functional Neurology and Chiropractic in Nisswa. When used cosmetically to target fat cells, the Zerona procedure creates an overall body slimming effect that can be used to reduce fat in your waist, chest, pecs, back, neck, arms, thighs, hips, ankles and more. “Consider Zerona as your last-minute option to tighten up those curves before your big day and honeymoon, and having that confidence in yourself to meet your forever is key for those long-standing pictures,” said Dr. Sara Graber, chiropractic neurologist/nutritionist and certified Zerona specialist for Northern Hope Functional Neurology and Chiropractic. “Zerona is very safe and effective,” said Dr. TJ Graber, a board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist at Northern Hope. “We measure our success by inches not weight. It is non-invasive and has zero side effects, unless looking good and feeling good is a side effect. It is FDA-approved for its results and safety which means it is proven effective and has no consequences.” Fat cells are actually little organelles that are one of the three components used for making new cells in the body (water, protein, and cholesterol). It is up to you to fill and maintain your cells with good substances for the performance of a healthy functioning body and appearance. With this premise in mind, your initial Zerona consultation will include a meeting with Graber, and Cassandra Holtz, a licensed massage therapist. This appointment will last 30-45 minutes, depending on your goals. Zerona is the first non-invasive fat loss laser to effectively target excess fat without the negative side effects associated with surgical methods. Zerona utilizes the same cold laser technology developed by Erchonia, which has been shown to emulsify fat and allow it to move to the interstitial space. The team at Northern Hope Functional Neurology and Chiropractic strive for excellence in our treatment plans and our laser technology is no exception. From a ceremony and celebration for a smaller, more intimate group of friends or family, to a larger space that will hold all your loved ones, a tour of the Northland Arboretum will speak for itself. The lower level offers a larger space which can accommodate up to 170 people and also includes a kitchen and covered patio. The lower level has a dance floor and romantic Edison lighting both indoors and out. Tables and chairs come with the rental and speakers, cocktail tables, chair covers and napkins are available for rent. Food can either be brought in or catered in. LET ONLINE TOOLS TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF YOUR WEDDING PLANS BY SHEILA HELMBERGER
When it comes to planning your wedding, more organizing than ever can be done from the comfort of your own home. Today you can search for venues, mull over menu options and even link all of your selections online to let your wedding party and members of your family be a part of every step. Set Up a Wedding Site The Knot, Zola, Wedding Wire and other hosts can make wedding planning a snap and serve as one-stop shopping for information. Share information such as how you met, introduce the members of your wedding party, suggest local accommodations or explain any special requests with those you have invited. Guests can submit RSVPs on the site and shop your registry.
Digital Slide Show A digital slideshow is a fun and surprising way to keep guests entertained while there is a lull in the day’s events. Share photos of the two of you growing up. Include pictures of the early days of your relationship and things you have done together. It’s a personal touch that will delight those that know you well and friends that are new.
Paper Supplies Design your own original save the date cards, invitations, and even thank you cards, sitting on your sofa. Customize your creation with sentimental wording, personal photos and colors that coordinate with your wedding theme. Affordable high-quality products can be ordered online that come in a multitude of sizes, styles and paper types.
Making it Official Include a family member or someone else special to the two of you by letting them conduct your wedding ceremony.
Online programs offer the steps to become ordained and can add a sentimental and sweet touch to the day. An Eye in the Sky Photos from your outdoor wedding taken by a drone in the air can offer a perspective that a photographer on the ground will not be able to get. Livestream Your Wedding A livestream of your ceremony over the internet can be invaluable for those who are far away or unable to attend the big day in person to share in the event and not miss a thing.
Google Calendar The weeks leading up to your wedding will be busy. With so much to schedule, Google Calendar or another electronic version, can be invaluable. As details are finalized, schedule them on the calendar and share any necessary dates with those that should be included in dress fittings, cake tastings and bridal showers hosted in your honor. Pinterest Pinterest is the place for inspiration for all things wedding. Look through examples of colors, themes, flower arrangements and decorations. Handmade touches are a big part of today’s celebrations and the site is loaded with ideas from centerpieces to menus to ways to entertain your wedding guests.

BEAUTY AND EMOTIONS THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME Well-known for their reliability, quality workmanship and expertise in creating one-of-a-kind custom bridal sets and engagement rings, E.L. Menk Jewelers has been a trusted source for thousands of wedding couples since 1979. BY REBECCA FLANSBURG Store owner Ed Menk and his experienced staff have never lost sight of their commitment to offering quality fine jewelry to Brainerd lakes area customers along with personalized service that is second to none. The staff has not only been with the company for many years, together they collectively have more than 100 years of experience in the jewelry and diamond industry. They also know that purchasing a ring for an engagement or a wedding is one of the important expenditures in a couple’s life. And it’s a decision that will be better made with the knowledge and guidance of an expert. “We enjoy helping brides and grooms find the perfect wedding ring for their special occasion and have options for every budget,” Menk confirmed. “Our wedding bands are made of the best materials and the highest craftsmanship and we offer only stones cut to maximum brilliance. Our wide selection of diamond rings include solitaires, ideal square diamonds, engagement rings, colored diamonds, custom designed bands and many more. For couples looking to match an existing ring, our design team can custom create a single or double wedding band that matches their ring beautifully.” A locally-owned and operated business, E.L. Menk Jewelers’ selection includes beautiful bracelets, necklaces and rings that are as classic and unique as their customers are. They also offer couples
diversity in jewelry choices and the largest collection of Canadian-mined and cut diamonds in the area. To view and appreciate the true brilliance and sparkle of a diamond, and know that it is the right diamond for the occasion, brides and grooms find they benefit from working one-on-one with someone who is also a part of their community. If a wedding proposal is in the future, E.L. Menk can take the pressure off grooms-to-be by offering a unique service that helps them with the decision-making process. After working to select the best diamond for the future groom’s budget and vision, the selected diamond is then mounted in a simple solitaire setting. This works to preserve the magic and excitement of the proposal, yet gives the bride-to-be an option of returning the solitaire setting and then selecting a new setting that better fits her style and taste. “The times have changed, but we haven’t,” Menk noted. “We have always been focused on providing the best service and expertise possible right within the walls of this building. In our jewelry workshop we not only create fine jewelry, we perform quality repairs and maintenance to keep your items
looking like new. All of our production and repair work is done onsite by my expert staff members who specialize in repairs, custom jewelry production and appraisals. Our customers’ satisfaction is always in the forefront of our minds and we continually work to ensure that everyone leaves this store with a smile that sparkles as brightly as the diamonds we sell.” As E.L. Menk Jewelers celebrates its 42nd year in business, Menk credits his company’s longevity to consistently offering excellence in customer service, professionalism, integrity along with cultivating long-term relationships with the customers who are now considered friends. In an era where online deals tempt buyers with cheap prices on inferior products, he also points out that there is no substitute for a trusted relationship with a hometown jeweler. “We’ve been here a long time and we will continue to be here for years to come,” Menk concluded. “We are proud to be able to use our knowledge and vast selection of stones and settings to assist brides and grooms-to-be in making a selection that not only reflects their relationship’s beauty and emotions, but also one that that will last a lifetime. 2021 Weddings North | 31
