Well-known for their reliability, quality workmanship and expertise in creating one-of-akind custom bridal sets and engagement rings, E.L. Menk Jewelers has been a trusted source for thousands of wedding couples since 1979.
Beauty and Emotions That Will Last a Lifetime BY REBECCA FLANSBURG Store owner, Ed Menk, and his experienced staff have never lost sight of their commitment to offering quality fine jewelry to Brainerd lakes area customers along with personalized service that is second to none. The business’ staff has not only been with the company for many years, together they collectively have over 100 years of experience in the jewelry and diamond industry. They also know that purchasing a ring for an engagement or a wedding is one of the important expenditures in a couple’s life. And it’s a decision that will be better made with the knowledge and guidance of an expert. “We enjoy helping brides and grooms find the perfect wedding ring for their special occasion and have options for every budget,” Ed Menk confirmed. “Our wedding bands are made of the best materials and the highest craftsmanship and we offer only stones cut to maximum brilliance. Our wide selection of diamond rings include solitaires, ideal square diamonds, engagement rings, colored diamonds, custom designed bands and many more. For couples looking to match an existing ring, our design team can custom create a single or double wedding band that matches their ring beautifully.” A locally-owned and operated business, E.L. Menk Jewelers’ selection includes beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and rings that are as classic and unique as their customers are. They also offer couples diversity in jewelry choices and the largest collection of Cana-
dian-mined and cut diamonds in the area. To view and appreciate the true brilliance and sparkle of a diamond, and know that it is the right diamond for the occasion, brides and grooms find they benefit from working one-on-one with someone who is also a part of their community. If a wedding proposal is in the future, E.L. Menk can take the pressure off grooms-to-be
by offering a unique service that helps them with the decision-making process. After working to select the best diamond for the future groom’s budget and vision, the selected diamond is then mounted in a simple solitaire setting. This works to preserve the magic and excitement of the proposal, yet gives the bride-to-be an option of returning the solitaire setting and then selecting a new setting that better fits her style and taste. “The times have changed, but we haven’t,” Ed noted. “We have always been focused on providing the best service and expertise possible right within the walls of this building. In our jewelry workshop we not only create
fine jewelry, we perform quality repairs and maintenance to keep your items looking like new. All of our production and repair work is done onsite by my expert staff members who specialize in repairs, custom jewelry production and appraisals. Our customers’ satisfaction is always in the forefront of our minds and we continually work to ensure that everyone leaves this store with a smile that sparkles as brightly as the diamonds we sell.” As E.L. Menk Jewelers celebrates its 38th year in business, Ed credits his company’s longevity to consistently offering excellence in customer service, professionalism, integrity along with cultivating long-term relationships with the customers who are now considered friends. In an era where online deals tempt buyers with cheap prices on inferior products, he also points out that there is no substitute for a trusted relationship with a hometown jeweler. “We’ve been here a long time and we will continue to be here for years to come,” Ed concluded. “We are proud to be able to use our knowledge and vast selection of stones and settings to assist brides and grooms tobe in making a selection that not only reflect their relationship’s beauty and emotions, but also one that that will last a lifetime.”

Whether you’re planning ahead, or you officially have a ring on your finger, dreaming about your special day is all part of the fun. Even with all of the exhilaration of being engaged, choosing a wedding or reception venue may seem daunting at first. Here at Breezy Point Resort, we promise to make the process as painless as possible. We want your day to be as magical as you’ve always dreamed it to be, which is why we have a team of wedding specialists on board, as well as affordable enchanting locations to choose from for your unique celebration. This year, we’re excited to announce we’re offering outdoor wedding receptions in a new (but beloved) location—our Antlers Pavilion. You’ve never experienced this level of magical charm in a reception hall—trust us. Our majestic outdoor pavilion overlooks waterfalls and ponds on the Whitebirch Golf Course, and can accommodate up to 100 people dining together. This elegant outdoor venue is open from May to October and features a beautiful covered ceiling, chandelier, white canvas curtains with windows, pre-strung bistro lights, banquet tables to seat eight each, white chairs and linens, a cake table, and portable
microphone so even the furthest guests can hear the Best Man and Maid of Honor speak. You’ll also be happy to note rental fees for all of this enchantment is far more affordable than you might think—running at just $400 for the rental fee (which includes all the tables, chairs, linens, set up, and tear down). This also covers a full bar set up at no additional charge, though guests will pay for their drinks upon ordering. Delectable meal plans will vary in price depending on your choices. Imagine the gentle summer breeze blowing in, candles flickering, and sunset setting in the distance… You’re no longer engaged, but newlyweds surrounded by your friends and family who are here to wish you well in your new adventure together. You look around the pavilion and see all of your guests cozied up to their tables, enjoying their drinks and buffet-style dinner—which offers them the delicious choices of prime rib, chicken and ribs, steak, and much more. Everyone’s laughing, smiling, and enjoying the evening together. It doesn’t get much better than this. But you don’t have to just take our word for it… Give Breezy Point Resort a call to set up a time to tour the facilities, take in the surroundings and ambiance of the pavilion, and discover all of the amazing options we have to offer. You’ll see instantly why the Antlers Pa-
vilion should be your choice for your magical outdoor wedding reception. If you’re new to the Brainerd lakes, or to the wedding venue search, you might be asking yourself, is the Antlers Pavilion only for receptions? Or can weddings be hosted in this beautiful location as well? We have good news for you. The pavilion has been a sought-after outdoor wedding venue in our area since early 2000. The pavilion can seat up to 200 guests for your ceremony. The rental fee is the same, running at $400, and includes a unity table with gorgeous white linen, a program table (also with matching white linen), and the portable sound system. If you would like our white chairs set up for your guests, they run $2 plus tax and service charge per chair. Drawing Couples to the Lakes Area BY CHRIS MONROE
The Brainerd lakes area with its majestic pines, sparkling waters and venues of all kinds, continues to grow as the premier wedding locale for couples planning a wedding— any season.
When Mariah and Derek Toms decided to hold their wedding in the Brainerd lakes area last winter, they turned to Breezy Point Resort to help with the logistics. “Sylvia Swanson was great,” said Mariah Toms.“I’d call her with a question and she’d call me back within 20 minutes. She made it so easy.” And flawlessly handling all of the logistics was critical, since the Toms live in Rochester. “Honestly, I thought planning a wedding 250 miles away would be more difficult, but I actually think it was easier,” Toms added. Like many couples who choose the lakes region for their wedding destination, it was the fond memories of days gone by that drew the Toms to the area. “My family has been vacationing in the Brainerd/Baxter area since I was 4 years old,” says Toms. “The location was perfect.” And the Toms were pleased to learn Breezy Point offered a great special on rooms in the off season and a February wedding meant it was much easier to book all of the vendors. Honoring the wonderful memories at the lake seems to be the driving force for couples choosing to host a destination wedding in the Brainerd lakes area. While there are many venues to choose from, Jason and Andrea Kosloski also chose Breezy Point Resort for their destination wedding. “The Brainerd area is special to us,” says Andrea Kosloski. “We spend as much time there as we can in the summer so we wanted to have our wedding in the lakes region also.” It was important to the Kosloskis to use all local vendors, keeping the money in the lakes region. And the couple was excited to learn that ADOR Wedding Photography, together with Spectrum Entertainment, offers a package that includes photography, DJ and photo booth. “It was a very special day,” says Kosloski. “It was very unique because our four daughters made up the wedding party!”

“Our wedding was unique due to the fact our wedding party was our four daughters.” “Most of the couples we work with come from the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area, but they have ties to northern Minnesota,” says Mariah McKechnie of Northland Special Events out of Duluth. “Many vacationed in Northern Minnesota as kids and want their weddings to reflect those special memories.” Northland Special Events is one of many event planners in Minnesota that will provide help with all of the details, including floral and decor. McKechnie started wedding planning almost by accident after offering to plan her sister’s northern Minnesota wedding eight years ago. Shortly after the wedding, she moved her family from Washington,D.C., to Duluth, hung out a shingle and started her own business. She now employs 20 people year-round, with an additional 20-25 coming onboard each summer, and plans 7-9 weddings each weekend during the busiest times of the year, July through October. “While our quietest months are February and March,” McKechnie says, “winter weddings are growing in popularity. People love the backdrop of snow and services are much more reasonable in the off-season.”
It was important to the Kosloskis to use all local vendors, keeping the money in the lakes region.

An outdoor wedding in February? Sure. Just plan to keep your guests comfortable. Perhaps provide an indoor viewing area, or for the heartier guests, blankets, mittens and scarfs and a little hot beverage will do the trick. For those thinking about tying the knot in the next year, plan to spend $20,000-$25,000 for a traditional wedding with 150-200 guests. If your budget doesn’t allow for that, there are ways to reduce the cost and have some fun doing it. Rather than a formal, plated dinner, opt of a variety of food trucks for a more casual dining experience. The easiest way to trim the expense is to trim the guest list…hold a more intimate gathering with 50 of your closest family and friends. Understand that your guests will be eager to attend a destination wedding in central Minnesota in July or August, so the percentage of those invited who actually attend will be higher than for a non-destination wedding. McKechnie suggests you choose the location for the wedding, the caterer, photographer and the band or DJ a year in advance. However, an off-season wedding allows for more flexibility. “We didn’t want a long engagement,” Toms says. “A winter wedding
Sophia, (far right), with the Kosloskis’ four daughters, (left to right): Lily, Liberty, Mallory and Emmy.
meant the availability and cost for vendors was much more to our liking.” If the couple has chosen the lakes area for its wedding, you can be sure it will incorporate the water into the festivities. Perhaps just a background for beautiful photography or a themed reception, water is also serving a transportation need, with brides making
their entrance in a canoe or row boat. Additionally, the lakes area lends itself perfectly to an outdoor ceremony. “We always have a plan B,” McKechnie says. “But plan B is always much less desirable than plan A, so couples need to decide ahead of time how much discomfort they’re willing to put their guests through.” How willing is the
couple to bump the start time a little to wait out a thunderstorm? Or, would the hosts be comfortable having their guests sit through a little drizzle? “It’s all about being prepared,” McKechnie says. “It’s likely to go off without a hitch, but weather is unpredictable.” XOXO

WARM HOMETOWN CHARM
For couples looking for an intimate setting with a hometown feel BY REBECCA FLANSBURG
Not every couple is looking to duplicate the posh wedding of today’s celebrities. Just as many brides and grooms are more interested in locating a venue that will help them showcase their
individual style and personalities along with a side order of down-home warmth and charm. Couples seeking this specific style of venue need look no further than a family-owned gathering place and restaurant located in a locally-sourced log building just outside of Pine River. Bites Grill & Bar is conveniently located on the beautiful Paul Bunyan trail, a fact that appeals to locals and visitors alike. Under the direction of owners Roger and Wendy Hoplin, Bites has earned an excellent reputation for their hearty, from-scratch traditional and new American cuisine, up north ambiance and amenities that promote good times and fun. Bites Grill & Bar has also won the Minnesota Restaurant Association’s new award, the Restaurant Neighbor Award, in November 2016. For wedding couples looking for a more intimate setting with a hometown feel, Bites Grill & Bar offers a spacious dining and banquet room area and an outdoor patio area that seats up to 60 guests and features a rustic outdoors fireplace. The property also boasts a beautiful grassy area that has been the backdrop for many wedding ceremonies. The business’ front patio serves as a gaming area where guests and family can relax and share some laughs.
Roger and Wendy take pride in working with each couple to tailor a special day that reflects their style and budget. Their in-house catering service works with each wedding client to create superb meals that include anything from mouth-watering stuffed pork chops with cranberry and apple glaze to good old-fashioned pulled pork sandwiches and fries. Wendy’s Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School training is evident in the business’ popular made-from-scratch cheesecakes and couples can choose from masterpieces like Maple Bacon Cheesecake or Raspberry White Chocolate Cheesecake to top off their celebration with a sweet treat. So no matter what time of year a wedding may be planned, Bites Grill & Bar offers up a tranquil setting, exceptional foods and a front seat view to our area’s ever changing seasons.

We chose the Brainerd area because it is a halfway point between where our families live. Also, because it is an absolutely gorgeous area especially for a fall wedding and Whitefish is an amazing value.

WHY THE LAKES AREA?
Molly grew up visiting an area family cabin. After becoming a couple her and Andrew spent every summer here. “We loved the idea of an outdoor wedding and fell in love with the staircase along the water at Madden’s,” said Molly.
PONTOON CRUISE
“We took our wedding party out on the pontoon for an hour before our grand entrance. It was so much fun
celebrating with them out on the lake,” said Molly.
ROMANTIC BEACH PHOTOS
“Instead of doing ‘first look’ photos, we snuck away after dinner and walked to the end of the dock. We danced on the beach. It was so nice to spend one on one time together in the middle of all the chaos. We could really just focus on each other. Our photographer caught photos of us and they are some of our favorites,” said Molly.

PICTURE-PERFECT BY SARAH NELSON-KATZENBERGER
Rain on your wedding day sounds like a nightmare to most people. Photographer Kelli Engstrom is not most people. “You make it work,” Engstrom said. “Sometimes the best photos come right after the rain.” Last summer Engstrom recalls shooting a wedding at Pine Peaks Resort in Crosslake. A gorgeous Saturday wedding was suddenly threatened by torrential downpour and continued off and on rain throughout the ceremony. Always quick on her feet, Engstrom grabbed an umbrella and kept on shooting. “We just made it happen,” she said. “We got the shot and it ended up being really beautiful.” With more than two decades of experience, Engstrom has plenty of practice logged with it comes to nav-
igating the ever-changing Minnesota weather. “This isn’t my hobby — this is my life focus,” she said. Engstrom prides herself in really knowing her clients and going the extra mile to make sure the wedding photography represents them well. “I like to capture them as who they are,” she said. All of Engstrom’s wedding photography packages come with an engagement photo session as a strategic way for her clients to get to know her and feel comfortable long before their wedding day. “It really breaks the ice,” Engstrom said. “A lot of clients are out of state so it’s a great way for us to connect in person.” Engstrom has done more than 300 weddings in her 20 years as a photographer and she said she makes sure her clients know, from beginning to
end, their experience is of the utmost importance to her. “This is the most important day of their lives,” she said. “I don’t take that lightly.” Engstrom said many of her clients contact her down the road to schedule newborn photos and family photos and even graduation photos. “I kind of become part of their family,” she said. With new photographers popping up all the time, Engstrom knows she could feel the weight of competition, but feels that in the end it’s the quality of her work that wins out. “Anyone can take photos — there are a million photographers out there,” she said. “I want to be one that stands out.” For more information and inquiries on package pricing visit www. kelliengstrom.com.

Alison and Jared Pokrzwinski knew they wanted their wedding day to be a day their friends and family would never forget. For them, that meant a destination wedding. With roots in North Dakota and Minnesota and family spread throughout both states, the couple landed on the Brainerd lakes area — after a brief Google search.

“We just fell in love with the idea of a lakes area wedding.” - Alison Pokrzwinski
“We loved all the nostalgia of the Minnesota feeling.” - Alison Pokrzwinski “We knew northern Minnesota was beautiful, and we started thinking — I wonder if they do many weddings in that area,” Alison, a Lakeville native, recalled. “The more we dug, the more we found. We just fell in love with the idea of a lakes area wedding.” The Pokrzwinskis met in college at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. They were studying in the same program and even had some classes together, but nothing sparked. “We had very different friends, “Alison said. “We knew each other, but didn’t really hang out.” The pair graduated and went their separate ways, Alison landing in the Fargo Area and Jared in Grand Forks. For years they were connected only on Facebook until one day Alison reached out to Jared to see if he knew a good spot for deer hunting. Jared offered up his own land for her to hunt on and ended up joining her. “We shared a beer and a burger and the rest is pretty much history,” Alison said.

Alison and Jared were engaged Memorial Day weekend 2015 and immediately started planning their July 2016 wedding. While on a business trip to Gull Lake, Alison said she started to put together the idea of a wedding in the lakes area. They came back and checked out several resorts and other venues before finally settling on Pine Peaks in Crosslake. “We weren’t sure we wanted the resort feel but we liked the idea of being near the lakes and surrounded by the beautiful Minnesota trees I grew up with,” Alison said. “We just loved all the nostalgia of the Minnesota feeling.” Alison and Jared’s wedding came with a mix of deep-rooted tradition and the flair of their love for the great outdoors and a nod to local businesses for much of the needs for their big day. Family from all over started arriving a few days before the event and rented cabins in the Crosslake and Pequot Lakes area. “It was very much a fun family vacation wedding for everyone,” Alison said. “There’s plenty of fun things to do in the area and that made it a great experience even outside our actual wedding day.” The Pokrzwinskis’ destination-wedding weekend didn’t come without its share of challenges. A huge storm blew through the Crosslake knocking the power out throughout the area, including the electricity and water at Pine Peaks. More and more guests were starting to arrive creating the perfect scenario for mass panic, but was quickly diffused. “Dave (Pine Peaks owner) was so calm,” Alison recalled. “He assured us it would come back on.” Up until Friday afternoon, the day before the wedding, the wedding party was still with-
out power. Family members prepared for the rehearsal dinner, on the hottest day of the year, without electricity. “It was pretty amazing watching our families work together to cook for 100 people without any power,” Alison said. “And it comes with a great story.” The couple held their wild-game-themed rehearsal dinner outdoors at Pine Peaks complete with outdoors games, grilled food and some family favorites — fried walleye and dove poppers. “It was really nice to have that homey option for our rehearsal dinner even with a large number of people,” Alison said. “That’s just not something we could have done in a restaurant.” Alison and Jared followed Pine Peaks’ recommendation for many of their wedding day needs. They ordered their wedding cake from Reed’s Market, a Crosslake staple. “It was priced right and we got to sample cake ahead of time and loved it — they were really great to work with,” Alison said. The couple turned to Bloom Design by Kate Kuepers in Brainerd for their floral arrangements. Alison had seen some of Kuepers’ work in various wedding publications and was impressed with what she found. “I didn’t want to risk getting flowers from someone I hadn’t seen work from,” she said. Alison said she presented Kuepers with some unique ideas she found on Pinterest and Kuepers made it happen. Alison and Jared’s shared love for the outdoors influenced their idea to use shotgun shells for their groomsmen boutonnieres. The shells turned out to be too big so they had to go with something smaller.
With 225 of their closest friends and family, outdoor games and even a red tractor available for photos, it was the perfect outdoor event. “It was all very last minute — we got them to her the day before the ceremony,” Alison recalled. “She said, ‘No problem,’ and had them done and they were very beautiful.” Both Catholic, it was important to Alison and Jared to be married in a Catholic church. Alison said she had some concerns about finding a church they were not members of to accommodate an out of town wedding, but found a warm reception from Immaculate Heart in Crosslake. “They were more than willing to work with us,” Alison said. The couple did all of their premarital counseling at their home church that shared documents with leadership at Immaculate Heart. The church provided staffing for the day of the event, including a pianist. Alison and Jared wanted to do a unique twist on the traditional unity candle and instead had a unity plant. “The church was great with it,” Alison said. They collected soil from their hometowns and planted a peace lily selected by their mothers. The couple’s reception at Pine Peaks was everything they dreamed it would be. With 225 of their closest friends and family, outdoor games and even a red tractor available for photos, it was the perfect outdoor event. “It was just so much fun to look at the pictures,” Alison said. “It was just what I envisioned.” Alison and Jared hired the Johnny Holm band, a Minneapolis-based group with ties to the lakes area and favorite of the couple of their friends and family. “We kept it a big secret from everyone, so that made for a fun surprise,” Alison said, adding that the party lasted until about 2 a.m. the next day. Looking back on their big day, Alison said she wouldn’t change a thing. “We got to experience a little bit of Minnesota in a way we had not before,” she said. “We could never have that here.” Alison and Jared live in Devils Lake, N.D., and are expecting their first child in June. CRAGUN’S
Is the Word for More Than Excellent! BY SUE SMITH-GRIER September 16, 2017, Stephanie and Mitch LaBorde exchanged vows in one of the most perfect settings Gull Lake has to offer located at one of Minnesota’s premiere resorts. Mitch has fond memories of family gatherings at Cragun’s so it only made sense to introduce his bride-to-be to the cozy resort atmosphere. The rustic feel gives it a uniquely warm and inviting ambience which is amplified in the attentiveness of the Cragun’s staff. Beautiful views abound from all areas of the resort. The grounds are magnificent and the list of vendors to help make your day extraordinary provides access to some of the best people and services central Minnesota has to offer. Stephanie and Mitch were more than pleased with their stay at Cragun’s. “The staff was wonderful!” exclaimed Mitch, “They were . . . whatever word is better than excellent!”
The staff at Cragun’s is amazing in their flexibility and commitment to providing the perfect wedding experience. Cragun’s wedding planner, MaryBeth, coordinated every step like clockwork. Mitch and Stephanie were
impressed with not only the attention they received, but also with the quality of the food. “We had simple burgers and sandwiches for one meal and they were exceptionally good,” said Stephanie. Cragun’s offers a variety of dining choices from very casual to classic. Stephanie hadn’t entertained the thought of a comfort food like pot roast for her wedding dinner. “I thought, who would have pot roast at a wedding? Then I tasted the pot roast and I was blown away. ‘Honey,’ I said to Mitch, ‘We’re having pot roast for our wedding dinner!’” Mitch and Stephanie planned an outdoor wedding by the lake, and despite the misty dampness of their September day, the staff was set up and was ready to go when the rain stopped. Everything came together perfectly and the LaBordes had the beautiful, romantic outdoor wedding they had dreamed of.

Real Couples: Inspiration Laid Back Riverside Oasis
“The location of our wedding was very special to both of us, as it was at my grandparents place on the Crow Wing River. We went with a fishing theme, because we love fishing together and our first date was fishing in our kayaks,” said Heather. The Maule wedding was full of creative touches with a nod to fishing and Minnesota waters. You can’t help but look at these photos and feel the light, relaxed fun of the afternoon. Surely canoeing and the fun “bait shop” snack bar accentuated the effect. 34 Weddings North | 2018

WEEKEND WEDDING FEAST An Easy, Casual Weekend Celebration at Your Fingertips
BY CHRIS MONROE Often times there’s more to a weekend of wedding festivities than the big event itself. Perhaps family members will be arriving ahead of the wedding day and will be staying at your house. Or, a full day at the salon for the bride and her attendants followed by pictures ahead of the ceremony may leave little time for grabbing a bite to eat. Look no further than Supervalu in Pequot Lakes to provide just the right sustenance to get everyone through the weekend feeling their best. Supervalu offers a variety of meat and cheese platters, assorted fruit trays or bite-sized sandwiches to accommodate the wedding party that’s on the go. Have the store’s staff fill up
your cooler with water and pop and have it on hand throughout the day. The friendly staff at Supervalu will have everything ready for pick-up and no one will have to worry that the bride may faint as she saunters down the aisle or the father of the groom will be in search of a fast-food venue for the groomsmen just minutes before the ceremony. And, if your wedding calls for a more casual meal or you’re looking for an easy way to feed the family following the rehearsal, Supervalu can customize its platters and add just the right side dishes and desserts to make an impression on your guests.
Need floral arrangements or a wedding cake for the big day? Supervalu can help with those things also. Its sister-stores, Cub Foods in Baxter and Brainerd, have full floral departments and can make custom wedding cakes. Supervalu will have them delivered to the store in Pequot Lakes to make it as easy on the wedding family as possible. Store manager, Corky LeDoux, and his staff in Pequot Lakes will make planning your big day, and the events that surround it, as easy as possible. Send your family and guests home having enjoyed a beautiful, hassle-free weekend.

MARRIED FOR OVER 30 YEARS
Real Couples: ADVICE BY TIFFANY PAUL
Marriage is one of those things that takes a lot of work, needs a lot of patience and should welcome helpful advice. We interviewed a Baxter couple who has been married for 30+ years to gain some of their earned knowledge. Meet Jon & Cylinda Ring:
1. How long have you been married?
“We have been married for 33 years. Our wedding was Nov. 3, 1984.”
2. What was an unforgettable moment from your wedding?
Cylinda - “Our photographer was my uncle and he stood on a piano bench before the wedding to take a picture when the bench fell out beneath him! He broke his elbow but we didn’t know it at the time. At the end of the night we found out he went to the hospital.” Jon - “Another thing I remember is smiling so much my face hurt!”
3. How did you meet?
Cylinda- “In college, we went to a small

“People talk about marriage being a 50-50 partnership and it really is 100-100...You have to give 100 percent, even on days you don’t feel like it but you do it anyway.” - C ylinda Christian university in Indiana and had the same history class. I saw Jon and said, ‘well I’d like to get to know him.’ Back then the girls would have a ‘pick a date’ evening where girls would invite a guy out. So I said to a mutual guy friend, ‘Do you think he’d go out with me?’ and he said, ‘I’ll go ask him.’ So he asked and
Jon said, “Sure.” Our mutual friend says, ‘Okay I’ll point her out to you.’ Well right in front of me there was a tall blonde girl from California and he thought it was that girl that wanted to go out with him!” Jon- “So I agreed to go out with her and we were at an open house (open dorms) when Cylinda entered the room and it dawned on me that it was her who asked me, not the blonde from California! I kept my commitment and we ended up having a great time, even though I had a track meet that day where I competed in a couple of sprint races then went out on the date without taking a shower or anything!” Cylinda- “I had no clue.” Jon- “But we had a lot of fun!”
4. How did you overcome differences?
9. What are some activities/hobbies that you enjoy together?
Jon- ”One day at a time. We still have our differences, but I know that she loves Jesus as well as I do and that makes a huge difference. I can’t fulfill all of her needs and she can’t fulfill all of mine but having our foundation in Christ makes a huge difference.”
Jon- “We love to go to sporting events and concerts supporting our kids. We love to do things with family extending into our kids’ inlaw.” Cylinda- “We love to do things outside. He’s a hunter and a trapper but we garden together and go to the movies. We also enjoy playing games with other couples.” Jon- “We do a lot of service work together as well. We are part of the Brainerd Warrior Football Association, New Pathways homeless shelter and we volunteer at our church. It’s fun to do things that are bigger than us, together.” XOXO
5. What are some things you do to keep your relationship growing?
Cylinda- “We do things together, and if there’s something I might not like I’ll still do it with him and vice versa. For example, I like to go to the movies and he’ll go with me.”
6. How do you resolve conflicts?
Jon- “We generally try to talk it out, and sometimes you need that space, but then we come back and work it out. It comes back to that mutual foundation, even if we don’t agree with each other we do trust each other.” Cylinda- “Like anything in life, sometimes you have to agree to disagree. When it comes to the big stuff though, such as raising the kids, in the end I know I can go to him.” Jon- “I think we know each other well enough now to know each other’s gifts too.”
Flip the page to see what other couples had to say about creating a successful marriage.
“Love really is a choice, life is tough and things happen to everyone. When you go through those things it can either grow you closer or move you apart...”- Jon
7. How has your marriage changed over the years?
8. What advice would you give to a newlywed couple?
Jon- “I would suggest premarital counseling; it is a good decision to take a personal inventory in that way to see your compatibility. You are embarking on something that is life altering, being prepared is wise.” Cylinda- “When you get married you marry the whole family not just them. Also people talk about marriage being a 50-50 partnership and it really is 100-100. If I base my 50 on what he is going to do for me and what I get out of him, I will be disappointed. That’s why you have to give 100 percent, even on days you don’t feel like it but you do it anyway.”
A family business for your family event.
001664670r1
Cylinda- “More in love. I think when you’re dating or just engaged/married it’s more like infatuation. In learning to live with each other, the love has grown.” Jon- “Love really is a choice, life is tough and things happen to everyone. When you go through those things it can either grow you closer or move you apart. It all comes back to that strong foundation.”

CUB’S CUSTOM FLORAL Personalized Wedding Flowers From Your Friends at Cub Foods BY CHRIS MONROE Planning a wedding in the Brainerd lakes area? Look no further than Cub Foods in Baxter and Brainerd for your floral arrangements. “Our floral department does 20-25 weddings each season,” says Lisa Lundberg with Cub Foods in Baxter. “While August and September continue to be our busiest months, we’re seeing an increase in fall weddings.” Although Lundberg has recently moved to the deli department, turning over the floral reigns to Jody Rager, she built up the business over 15 years by creating floral masterpieces for lakes area weddings. “The floral department at Cub Foods has a good reputation,” says Lundberg. “And couples can save up to 30-50 percent from
other floral options. It’s not that our quality is any different, it’s just that we can do things more economically because we’re part of a larger operation.” Trends in wedding flowers appear to lean toward vintage. “We see a lot of vintage lace, burlap and baby’s breath,” says Lundberg. “I’d call it soft elegance.” Brides are also personalizing their floral arrangements, perhaps attaching a picture of a loved one that can’t be present or adding a special memento to their bouquet. While Cub Foods does not cater weddings, its deli does offer a variety of party platters that are perfect for a more, casual event. Meat and cheese platters or small sandwiches may pro-
vide just the right menu for a wedding with a picnic theme or one that will be held outdoors. And if your needs extend beyond the big event itself, the staff at Cub Foods will help ease your stress. Need finger sandwiches to get the bride and her attendants through the busy day of manicures, pedicures and make-up sessions? How about a quick bite to eat before the ceremony? Whatever your needs, Cub Foods will help make the day a special one. Contact the Cubs Food floral department at 218-828-4601 and ask for Jody or email Jody at floral155060@svharbor.com and like the Facebook page at Cub Floral Baxter.

WEEKEND CELEBRATION AT PINE PEAKS EVENT CENTER
Brilliant sunrises, dramatic sunsets, cascading fields, indoor/outdoor fireplaces and wildflower gardens.
BY SHEILA HELMBERGER What if you could spend your entire wedding weekend celebrating with your friends and family at a beautiful, private, 80-acre gated estate? With Pine Peaks Event Center near Crosslake, owner Dave Peterson and his wife, Julie, have created a wedding resort that offers a true destination wedding. Secluded, away from everything, they make it possible to wake up the morning of your vows and have a cup of coffee and relax instead of running around from place to place picking up items you’ve rented. The Petersons supply almost anything a wedding couple might need. “We furnish the tables, chairs, linens, chair covers, and skirting in multiple colors. Chair sashes and table runners in 24 colors plus an entire storage room filled with decorations. “Most people don’t have to haul much at all,” he says. Set up is done by the wedding party and take down is done by staff at Pine Peaks. The Property Peterson gives each couple an extensive tour of the property when they meet – and there’s a lot to see. The property, owned by four generations of Petersons, offers a view from every deck and porch of serene beauty. It’s a photographer’s dream of rolling hills, corn fields and flowers. Two sites for the ceremony include your choice of arbors and each is surrounded by wildflower and perennial gardens. There is a bubbling rock, and a pond stocked with Koi in the spring, summer and warm

fall months. The seasons in lake country can change quickly, sometimes overnight. Raising or lowering tent walls and utilizing heaters or fans, you can create your idea temperature and make the atmosphere as cozy or as open as you’d like. The Big Day Pine Peaks Event Center partners with Maucieri’s Restaurant in Crosslake for catering services. The wedding couple and staff will work together to create the reception menu. “We allow customers to bring their own desserts and snacks for their reception but nothing that has to be kept hot or cold,” says Peterson. Parking spaces are available for many motorhomes with power, sewer and water hookups. Delivery, setup and removal for RV rentals can be arranged. The Retreat House “Just about every couple uses our retreat house,” says Peterson. Across a pathway from the event center is a 5,000-square foot home with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a loft with four more beds. “Typically, the wedding party and a few friends will stay here and have a nice time together for several days.” The master suite includes a Jacuzzi and a see-through fireplace. Also on site? A two-chair hair and makeup salon, a pool table, and laundry facilities.
The home features a gourmet kitchen, screened porch, pool table, games, an outdoor sauna and a propane fire pit. The Petersons know your wedding is more than just one really big day. It’s a weekend affair and the house is available to rent to couples from Thursday until Monday. A block of up to 28 rooms is available from Pine Peaks Lodge and Suites in Crosslake with shuttle service available to and from the reception. Extras After rehearsal, just move your wedding party into a space in the pavilion and have your groom’s dinner right there. Wood-fire pizzas can be made, or you can DIY grill burgers or steaks for the wedding party, offering a nice laidback evening before the big day. There’s no doubt Pine Peaks offers a few extras that other places can’t. Peterson has two tractors that can be used for some fun photos and then to take a celebratory hayride. “We’ve had over 210 weddings and no two have been the same,” he says. Nearly 50 weddings are already booked for next year and they’ve started booking into 2019. Wedding cancellation insurance is offered. Pine Peaks Event Center, with a capacity of around 300, has been the recipient of awards from The Knot and Wedding Wire as well as Best Wedding Venue in 2015 from Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine.
Pine Peaks is a unique Destination Wedding Resort of magnificent surroundings in the middle of the Brainerd Lakes area. We provide an easy and relaxing experience for you, and offer exceptional service for a stress free, perfect three to four day experience. Our on-site Retreat Lodge will house your entire Wedding Party or families. Our Event Center has everything you will need for your wedding. One visit to our gorgeous facility and we know you’ll fall in love.
