Enjoying Japanese Cuisine:
TIPS TO CONSIDER Japanese cuisine is one of the most diverse globally, with multiple options available for the culinary enthusiast. As a visitor will quickly realize, enjoying Japanese meals is about more than just the food itself; it is also about the etiquette and dining tips that make the experience memorable.

PRE-MEAL ETIQUETTE After being seated at a restaurant, a diner will be handed a wet towel (oshibori) that should be used to wipe the hands. The towel can be steaming hot in the winter or cool in the summer to counter the heat.
USING CHOPSTICKS Learning how to use chopsticks is a process, one made easier by relying on a local to teach you. For those that find it difficult, some restaurants might offer forks as an alternative.
ORDERING The hungry foreigner accustomed to an English-language menu may find it hard to order a Japanese meal at first. One way to get around this problem is by using the plastic food models that many restaurants place in glass display cases. If the restaurant has no displays, try looking through the menu to see if there are photos of the various dishes that can be pointed out to staff.
