The First Tourism While Negril has a long history, it first began to establish itself as a tourist destination in the 1950s. While there was little official accommodation, the ‘flower child’ generation began to visit the area and rent rooms in the homes of locals, or even pitch tents on their properties. The first guest house – Palm Grove – was established by Daniel Connell, paving the way for further resort development.
Resort Location Early visitors to Negril faced challenges in terms of infrastructure. To get into the area in the late 1950s and early 1960s, people had to take a ferry to Negril Bay and wade through the sea to get to shore. In the early 1970s, road transport links were improved and the influx of visitors began to grow.
