CHALLENGES OF

WORKING REMOTELY BRANDON GLICKSTEIN

As a way of curbing the spread of the coronavirus, many companies and businesses have implemented remote work policies. While many already work from home, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it necessary for a large portion of the global workforce to do so. The reasons for this may be clear, but it has its challenges.

Video conferencing apps and technology can help mitigate this, but supervisors may be concerned about employees not putting in as much effort. Employees can also feel that supervisors don’t understand their needs or aren’t as supportive when the interaction is limited.

Working remotely can lead to feelings of isolation, as some employees can miss the social interaction that an office setup affords. Over an extended period, social isolation might make employees feel less ‘attached’ to the company, something that can exacerbate the desire to leave the organization.

AN ABUNDANCE OF DISTRACTIONS In the case of a sudden transition to remote work, some employees must contend with other responsibilities such as childcare or suboptimal working spaces. Even under normal conditions, family obligations can affect working from home.
