Be celebrated in Branson Mindy Honey, Branson Tri-Lakes News

While

Veterans Homecoming is a couple months away, everyone from business owners and community leaders to volunteers are already kneedeep in plans for this year’s celebration when the Branson community will pause for a week to celebrate our nation’s warriors, past and present. “Veterans week in Branson is always one of our favorite weeks of the year,” said Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ross Summers. “Not only do we get to host thousands of these national heroes, but they actually become our friends. The welcoming spirit they get at all the shows, restaurants and attractions make it special for everyone.” While many of the events and reunions veterans have come to know and love will return again this year, for at least one event, it will be the last.

OF

EVENTS,

On Veterans Day, Tony Orlando will host his 20th and final “Yellow Ribbon Salute to Veterans” show. Orlando hosted his first show with a few hundred guests in the audience. Orlando and that show in 1993 have been credited for starting what we now call Veterans Homecoming, the week-long celebration of our veterans. People in Branson work year-round for the annual homecoming when they host free lunches, reunions, shows, ceremonies, a parade and other events in an effort to show appreciation for our national heroes. “It’s truly an honor to have these American heroes come to Branson every year and spend a few days,” Summers said. “There are very few places in America where veterans of every stripe, conflict or service branch can come and feel honored and welcomed. Branson is one of those places.”

Orlando’s final salute slated Submitted by Welk Resort Theatre Branson What began 20 years ago when Tony Orlando put on a free concert for veterans in Branson — originally attended by only 600 people — has grown to become one of the largest events celebrating veterans in the country, often welcoming more than 175,000 people into the town as part of a week-long, citywide salute. Orlando will celebrate his 20th anniversary and final “Tony Orlando Yellow Ribbon Salute to Veterans” in a special show that will be held this Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at Welk Resort Theatre, a 2,250-seat venue in Branson. The show starts at 2 p.m. One highlight of the “Yellow Ribbon” veterans celebration is the Yellow Ribbon Medal of Freedom presentation to an outstanding American who has helped the cause of veterans. Last year’s recipient, baseball’s hall-of-famer, Tommy Lasorda, best known for managing the Los Angeles Dodgers for 20 seasons (1977-96) has been a part of the Dodgers organization for more than 50 years and received the honor with tremendous gratitude. Other past recipients include former Gov. Mike Huckabee, former President Gerald R. Ford, the Eisenhower family, Bob Hope, Ross Perot, Lt. Col. Oliver North, and Senator John McCain. Shortly after the release of “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree,” Bob Hope invited Orlando to open his show at the Cotton Bowl. That performance would change the young singer forever. “The first time I ever sang ‘Yellow Ribbon’ live was at the Cotton Bowl in 1973 in front of 70,000 people,” Orlando said. “I had been invited by Bob Hope to help welcome home our POWs from Vietnam, Cambodia and

Laos. The song, a No. 1 hit, was only No. 43 with a bullet on the charts, at the time. “I remember asking Mr. Hope, ‘Why did you choose me to open this special show?’ Bob Hope said, ‘When I heard your song on the radio, I told my wife Delores, that the opening line, ‘I’m coming home; I’ve done my time,’ is every soldier’s wish and every mother’s prayer. That is why you are the only one who could open this show!’ “Sitting on the 50-yard line were 580-plus POWs who had just come home from Asia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Their eyes had not yet adjusted to the sunlight, so new was their freedom. I started singing the song’s opening line, ‘I’m coming home; I’ve done my time,’ and when I got to the chorus, all the POWs stood and began walking toward the stage, singing along like it was a military anthem, like ‘Halls of Montezuma.’ It was just incredible.” In 1973, when he recorded “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree” the song became No. 1 for the year, and became Orlando’s theme song, and grew into an American anthem of hope and homecoming, reunion and renewal. Then, more than 30 years ago, Orlando determined that if he ever had the opportunity, he would find a way to thank veterans for their sacrifices. In 1993, he saw his chance and wrote a show specifically for veterans and launched his annual “Salute to Veterans.” At 2 p.m. Nov. 11, Orlando will also host his 20th anniversary and final “Yellow Ribbon Salute to Veterans,” a star studded salute, free to all military past and present. Tickets may be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis by calling 417-337-7469. Two tickets per veteran couple may be picked up at the Welk Resort, 1984 State Highway 165, Branson.

That Friday evening, veterans were invited to a meet and greet at the Radisson Hotel. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed as they reminisced about their past military experiences over hors d’oeurves and cocktails. On Saturday morning, bikers from Rolling Thunder and other groups gathered at Branson Mill Craft Village for the POW/MIA Awareness Ride followed by the Flame of Freedom Ceremony at the Radisson Hotel. On Sunday, veterans gathered down at the Branson Landing for the Vietnam Veterans Parade. Later that afternoon, they were once again entertained by some of Branson’s best entertainers during a

closing ceremony held at Clay Cooper’s theater. Lynne was there to entertain the crowd and was honored by Branson Veterans Events & Reunions for his continued commitment to honor and celebrate veterans. Branson Veterans Events & Reunions is already hard at work putting together next year’s third annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans celebration. We hope to see you there in 2014 as we continue to celebrate our Vietnam veterans and their families. It’s past time these soldiers were given the appreciation they earned. For some of these veterans, it was a time of healing. They were finally able to relinquish some of the

resentment they had carried around for so many years. Some of them finally felt like someone appreciated them, someone cared enough to shake their hand, look them in the eye, and say “thank you” for a job well done, for their sacrifice. These men and women carry scars we will never see, from a war they fought in a foreign land and a war they fought when they came home. We here at Branson Veterans Events & Reunions are proud of each and every one of our servicemen and women. We realize the sacrifice it is to leave one’s home, family and life to serve our country. We honor and commend our men and women for a job well done. Thank you and welcome home.

Fast forward to Branson. When I first visited the area for a family reunion the Branson Veterans Task Force impressed me immensely through its service to one another and anyone who visited here. I was blown away by how veterans were treated. It felt like a homecoming to my husband Marshall and I. We got homesick for Branson when we returned to our home in California. So, we moved here! I think veterans have a chord in their hearts that vibrates when they continue to do for others. It’s contagious. I speak from experience as one who is a zealous carrier (stems from having spent many years belting songs from the stage). Branson Veterans Task Force finds new home, energy Mindy Honey, Branson Tri-Lakes News In late July, Branson Veterans Task Force leaders said they not only have a new office space, but a renewed energy and focus on doing what they can for veterans. The task force’s office has been in two different locations since early 2011, and since last November, they’ve been without any place of their own. “Just having an office again has revitalized us,” said task force board member Mary Schantag. “We are very excited about what we can do in the community. We have a home base, and we aren’t bouncing all over town again.” The organization had been operating the best they could out of a board member’s home for the past nine months. Board meetings were held in a conference room at Veterans Memorial Museum, the same location where the Task Force’s history project, which record’s veterans’ stories, was also located. The museum closed in August. Now, the task force’s office is located in the Falls Shopping Center on Missouri 165, as well as the history project and board meetings. Task Force Chairwoman Brenda

Meadows, who took over the position in April when longtime Chairman Ernie Bradley stepped down, said the new location, which has them under one roof, is a chance for the group to build steam, as well as better serve the community. “We are not just the task force, but we want to be a force within the community,” Meadows said. While the task force is a nonprofit, it doesn’t mean they can operate with no money Meadows said. In late July, the task force kicked off its membership drive. She said the community is already supporting what they are doing and their location is proof. Meadows explained that Jerry and Jeff Franklin, who own the shopping center, have allowed them to put their office in the space for what she called “minimal charges.” She said they want to be more than just a place to house an office manager however — they want to be the go-to place for veterans who have questions, need assistance or want to serve others. “We just want to be a service to the

‘Wartime Romance’ shares soldier’s WWII story Brenda Meadows, ‘A Wartime Romance’ “A Wartime Romance,” a 1940s musical honoring America’s Armed Forces, debuting in Branson Oct. 29-Nov. 11 at the Baldknobbers Theater, is donating a portion of its ticket sales to the Branson Veterans Task Force during Veterans Homecoming. The musical, directed by Gold World Medal Winner Wayne Hackett, features live big band music of the 1940s and Hollywood noted actor Troy Evans, who is also a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran. Evans appeared as a regular in the TV series “China Beach” and “ER.” He is also noted for his performance in “Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.” The cast members are actors from Hollywood and Branson. “A Wartime Romance” tells the true story of Marine Capt. Tom Johnson, a World War II dive bomber pilot who is sustained through the hope, inspiration and strength he gains from letters he writes to and receives from his gal back home in Horton, Kan. Hackett has a number of film and television credits to his name, including the television series “Baby Story” on TLC, which garnered an Emmy nomination. Playwright Marilyn Hackett penned “A Wartime Romance” after she found the love letters her mother and father wrote while he was stationed overseas during World War II. “The show is really about my dad’s fellow veterans and their families back

home, all who did as much or more in the effort to win WWII,” she said. “I wrote it because I felt a deep sense of American pride after 9/11.” Sadly, while plans were being made for the Branson production, Johnson passed away June 26, at the age of 94. His wife Margaret had passed away a number of years before. Johnson had been a permanent fixture at every previous performance of “A Wartime Romance.” He dreamt of seeing the production come to Branson where he once had a vacation home. He felt it was a way to entertain and honor America’s veterans. “The real heroes were the ones on the ground,” Johnson told his daughter. He had not spoken about the war until he saw the musical performed. “There was a healing, a way of looking at things that helped him come to terms with what he had to do in the Pacific,” Marilyn Hackett said. Executive Producer Bobby Hundley, who is also a principle cast member, said “A Wartime Romance” is the type of show that “has something wonderful for everyone, from my 3-year-old daughter to my 89-year-old grandparents. “Growing up a military brat around airplanes, I always dreamt of becoming a pilot and this show finally gave me the opportunity,” Hundley said. “But I have to say my co-stars steal the show including Atticus, our seeing eye dog, who

Right when you need a laugh, Atticus comes to the rescue like a real champ.” Hundley has served as the producing artistic director of the San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif., for the past 15 years. “A Wartime Romance” takes place in Horton, Kan., and in the Philippines. Many of the letters read as part of the script are taken directly from Johnson’s real life accounts.

Some comments made by audience members have labeled “A Wartime Romance” as “a time to remember, nostalgic, charmingly modern with amazing music and dance numbers and unbelievable acting.” Audiences have cheered, laughed cried and said they were “taken on a journey of rediscovery.” For tickets, visit wartimeromance.com or baldknobbers.com/wartime-romance or call 417-334-4528.

‘Vets for Vets’ kicks off Veterans Homecoming Submitted by Branson Veterans Task Force The second annual “Vets for Vets Celebration Show” is set for 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Baldknobbers Theater on 76 Country Boulevard. The show will not only include many veterans from Branson and surrounding areas, it will also have Hollywood actor Troy Evans making a cameo appearance. Evans, a Marine who served in Vietnam, will be in town starring in “A Wartime Romance” as well as his one man stand-up show. “The first ‘Vets For Vets Celebration’ last year was so much fun and was standing room only,” said U.S. Army veteran Brenda Meadows, who produces the celebration. “We just had to do it again.” The “Vets for Vets” show kicks off Veterans Homecoming, Nov. 5-11, and features area veterans and active duty personnel that perform for fellow veterans, their families and guests. “The free ‘Vets for Vets’ show has a USO party theme,” said Meadows, who is also a former USO entertainer, entertaining in Vietnam. “The Baldknobbers Theater seats 1,500, nearly twice the number of seats as last year’s venue. The show, hosted by Branson entertainer Dalena Ditto, will feature area talent and recording artists.

Among them are World War II veteran Chico Vega and the Drifters tribute show, Neil Diamond tribute artist Navy veteran Keith Allynn, Vietnam veteran Eddie Stovall and the World Famous Platters, Army veteran Janice Martin from the Branson Belle Showboat, as well as Army veteran Rich Watson from “Smoke on the Mountain,” Cape Girardeau’s Jerry Ford Big Band Orchestra and Peggy Lee Brennan of the TV series “MASH.” “We are so proud of our veterans and the sacrifices that they and their families have made to give us our freedom,” said Baldknobbers Theater Chief Operations Officer Brandon Mabe. “We hope to help make this year’s show even more successful than last years’ unbelievable inaugural performance.” Meadows explained that veterans that entertain feel they need to artistically say “thank you” as a way to embrace those who wore the same uniforms that they did. Mabe agreed that the “Vets for Vets Celebration Show” has become a success because of the bond performers have with their audience. “The fact that each veteran in attendance can directly relate with the veteran performers allows for an experience that is truly inspiring,” he said. “It creates an

Silver Star recipient seeks sponsors for Avenue Submitted by Branson Veterans Task Force

FLAGS fly along the Avenue of Freedom in Branson.

The Branson Bugle

A 2-mile stretch of road known as the Avenue of Freedom along Gretna Road is in need of sponsors to honor heroes. Thanks to the efforts of local Vietnam veteran Tom Goldsworthy, a Silver Star recipient, there are flags flying now, but more are needed. “People aren’t telling others about the battles and the soldiers that defend our country,” Goldsworthy said. “The other day a kid asked me, ‘What’s an infantryman?’ It made me sad. Now everybody’s talking about gun control. They’re waving flags. But they don’t want to keep that flag up there waving.” The Avenue of Freedom was designated by the Branson Board of Aldermen and members of the Branson Veterans Task Force on Nov. 14, 2001, and established to honor U.S. veterans who gave their lives for freedom. It is also recognized as a memorial to the approximately 3,000 people who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

As time passes, fewer people are informed about the Avenue and the process to re-flag it. A few members from community organizations, shows and veteran service clubs have used their personal accounts to keep a precious few flags flying, but it has not been enough. The Branson Veterans Task Force did maintain the flags that are displayed on light poles in the highway’s center, but its preservation has become too costly for the organization. Goldsworthy, who took over the duty of finding sponsors, has received a few outside donations from people who have visited Branson and were touched by the avenue. One woman wrote a letter and enclosed some money. “Enclosed is a donation towards the flags you put up and fly on the Avenue of Freedom,” she wrote. “I always enjoy driving there and seeing the flags.” But such gifts are few and far between

so Goldsworthy took to using his personal funds. “People have asked me, ‘Why is it so important to you that you put money and time into this?”’ Goldsworthy said. “There are people in Branson who enjoy seeing the flags flying. It shows their patriotism. It gives those whose names are on there a feeling of pride that they served their country the best they could.” With a donation of $50, a flag is prepared and the name and information of the honoree placed on a plaque below the flag. It is flown along the Avenue of Freedom for two to three months and then shipped to the donor/recipient with a certificate. The name of the person being honored is placed on the Avenue of Freedom Wall of Honor page at bransonveterans.com. To sponsor a flag, become a corporate sponsor or make a donation, contact the Branson Veterans Task Force at 417-337-8387 or Tom Goldsworthy at 417-598-0323.

POW/MIA service set for Nov. 6 at Welk Mary Schantag, P.O.W. Network The Welk Resort has hosted the Vietnam Traveling Wall and the POW/MIA Service of Tribute & Remembrance since Branson Veterans Homecoming was started 17 years ago. Welk’s generosity has allowed veterans, family and friends to pay tribute to those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom. The wall also reminds us that no veterans’ tribute is complete unless we recognize and remember the cost of freedom. The POW/MIA Service of Tribute & Remembrance is coordinated by the POW Network in cooperation with the Welk Resort. The service starts at 8 a.m. Nov. 6, and is held outdoors. Attendees need to dress for the weather. The service will include a

guest speaker, music and wreath laying ceremony. The invocation and benediction will be offered by retired U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Michael Jones; and the Posting of Colors by Branson High School’s U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, under the direction of retired U.S. Air Force Col. David Burke. As this goes to print, the United States has a young soldier known to be held alive in captivity on the Pakistan border. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has been held more than four long years. Bergdahl, 27, was taken prisoner in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. In early June, his family received a letter from him, confirming once more he is still

alive and considered a valuable asset. On June 20 of this year, a senior spokesman for the Afghan Taliban said the group is ready to hand over the only known American prisoner of war from the conflict in Afghanistan in exchange for five senior operatives held at Guantanamo Bay. We can only hope and pray that on Nov. 6, we can celebrate Bergdahl’s homecoming. More than 92,000 service members remain unaccounted for since the end of World War I. Of those, only Bergdahl is recognized by the U.S. government as being alive in captivity. For information on the service, call the P.O.W. Network, 417-336-4232 or email info@pownetwork.org. There is no charge and the public is invited to attend.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour, cocktails and dancing before dinner. Many of the attendees use the semi-formal, annual Military Gala & Banquet as a chance for military and family reunions, many coming back year after year. This year the gala salutes military families — “those who wait, also serve.” The evening will include a celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps Birthday, and special guests include a large group of our nation’s women veterans. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening is retired Navy Lt. Commander Michael Jones. He will be joined onstage by President of the Mess, retired U.S. Army National Guard Col. Don McMahon and chaplain, retired Col. Paul Vicalvi. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Molly Renshaw. Once the dinner call is sounded, the evening, patterned after a military dining out, will start with the Colors being posted, a new and unique moving candlelight POW/MIA service, military toasts and introductions of those being saluted in 2013. Diverse entertainment, including a performance by cast members of “Wartime Romance” is planned during dinner, as well as the cutting of the U.S. Marine Corps birthday cake.

At intermission, guests will enjoy an outdoor display of American-made fireworks, produced and provided by a local businessman Aaron Mayfield, of A.M. Pyrotechnics. During the second half of the gala, event sponsors will be recognized, followed by a special recognition. The True American Hero Award will be presented by the Military Officers Association of America Mozark chapter and then the Cpt. John Koutrakos Patriotism Award will be presented by the evening’s host, the P.O.W. Network. The Moonlighters, comprised of talented military veteran musicians from the Springfield area will, returning for their eighth performance, will close the evening. Tickets are $55 per person and include wine or non-alcoholic juice for toasts, dinner, entertainment and dancing. Reunion groups are asked to make reservations early, as seating is limited and no tickets are available at the door. Guests do not need to be a veteran to attend. Attire for the evening is cocktail wear, formal wear, military uniforms, mess dress or business attire. Sponsors are being sought for the event. If you would like to make reservations, or become a sponsor, as a business or individual, call 417-336-4232. If you have questions, feel free to email info@pownetwork.org.

Because it is Internet television, active duty military will be able to watch the programs over the Internet anywhere they are stationed, Wining explained. Rock legend performs special concert for veterans Submitted by Up Close Concerts A true rock and roll legend, Mark Farner found fame and success at 20 years of age as the leader of one of America’s biggest bands, Grand Funk Railroad. The band recorded 17 albums with total sales of more than 25 million records and toured the world, which isn’t bad for a guy who only had three formal guitar lessons. The hit singles included, “We’re An American Band,” “I’m Your Captain (Closer To Home),” “Foot-Stompin’ Music,” “Locomotion,” “Bad Time,” “Some Kind Of Wonderful,” plus many more. In 1971, they set the attendance record at New York’s Shea Stadium for a concert, surpassing the record set by

The Beatles in 1966, and a record that still stands today. Long revered and acknowledged as a primary force in popularizing the American power trio, Mark Farner comes to RFD-TV The Theatre in Branson for one show only — 2 p.m. Oct. 27. Farner is known as The Rock Patriot for good reason. His support of our country’s veterans and military is unmatched in the rock community. For this concert, Farner is doing something special for those who have served. With each paid ticket, guests may request another ticket free of charge. All that is asked is that ticket be given

to a veteran so they may attend the concert at no cost. The ticket may be used by a spouse, family member, friend, or anyone else as long as they are a veteran. There is no limit on the number of tickets for this offer. If you purchase one ticket you get one free, purchase five and get five free, etc. Please do not ask for this offer unless you are absolutely sure a veteran will use the ticket. Veterans Homecoming returns to Red Roof Mindy Honey, Branson Tri-Lakes News For months, Branson Veterans Task Force was moving forward with plans for Veterans Homecoming, all while unsure of where they were going to host the thousands of veterans who flock to Branson every year Nov. 5-11. In early August, task force Chairwoman Brenda Meadows said they were able to put their minds to ease when she received a call from Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley, who shared with Meadows the task force could use the former Factory Merchant Branson, commonly called the Red Roof mall, for another homecoming. “I knew (we’d) find something, but I didn’t know it would be so gracious,” Meadows said. Presley said the city had planned to winterize the vacant mall; however, that hadn’t taken place yet. “I think we’ve kind of watched the deadline they were up against,” Presley said. Presley said they decided that because the task force hadn’t been able to secure a location, the city decided to offer the Red Roof once again. “The space will work out great,” Presley said. For years, the task force has held many of their Veterans Homecoming staples — from registration and a vendor village, to free lunches and a day room — at the Red Roof, but

since the mall closed in 2012, the task force has been unsure of where they’d host their activities. The mall has been closed to the public as the city continues to research viable projects for the location. Meadows said for months they’ve been looking for alternative places for their activities, as they believed they wouldn’t be able to host it another year at the Red Roof. She said they need at least 10,000 square feet. Now, Meadows said the task force can move forward with plans for one of the biggest and best homecomings. “It is so convenient to have it in one place,” Meadows said. “Visitors don’t have to go all over the place.” She said the city has granted the task force use of buildings 12 and 13. “Now we can dot all the ‘i’s and cross all the ‘t’s,” Meadows said. Set to be held at the Red Roof during Veterans Homecoming, which runs Nov. 5-11, will be: The Wall of Heroes, a collection of photos and artifacts founder Tom Goldsworthy has spent years gathering; a dining hall where veterans are treated to a free lunch during the week; a vendor village where visitors can find businesses and organizations dedicating to serving veterans; registration; and a day room,

where veterans and their guests can spend time relaxing and catching up with old friends or making new ones. As for Veterans Homecoming 2014 activities being held at the mall, Presley said that decision hasn’t been made. The city has been looking at viable options for the location since taking ownership of it in early 2012. “I know the board wants to make the right decision, not just a speedy decision,” Presley said. 26572

By Sept. 1, we will more than double the veterans transported because we will have a new 12 passenger van added to our fleet. We are raising funds for more vans and always need more volunteer drivers. You don’t have to be a veteran to drive. We give free counseling and help by

Arlen Lipper, Branson Veterans Events & Reunions Branson Veterans Events & Reunions held a Disabled Veterans Golf Tournament June 7 at the Holiday Hills Resort & Golf Club. Veterans from Maine, Georgia, Florida and Missouri participated in the tournament. The tournament was a fundraiser to purchase a SoloRider golf cart. The cart is for anyone who is incapacitated from the waist down. As we have so many soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan with limbs missing, this cart gives them the opportunity to continue playing golf. The golf cart is $9,950, including shipping. The following morning, the veterans had breakfast and an awards ceremony at the Golden Corral where the Amputee Veterans Of America Support Team Color Guard presented the colors. The team is the only amputee color guard in the country. The first place team was Frankie Torres and Chris Dooley from Florida. Second place went to was Doc Milligan and Steve Allberry from Florida, and the third place team was Herb Wyman from Maine and Charles Burton from St. Charles. The golf tournament raised $6,025 from donations, hole, and green sponsors. As we came up short on raising the funds we needed to purchase the SoloRider golf cart, we will continue our quest to raise those funds and finish our mission. For more information or to make a donation, email bransonveteransevents@yahoo.com or call 417230-2278.

VETERANS gather for a jam session at the day room during a past Veterans Homecoming. file photo | Branson Tri-Lakes News

GREAT NEWS AND WE ARE EXCITED! The City of Branson came through for us one more time. The former Factory Merchants Branson, better known as the Red Roof mall, has been the home of the day room for the past seven years. We are so pleased to know that we will once again be able to welcome our veterans to the same great location, with plenty of space, and lots of parking. The Day Room will be open Nov. 6–10. As has become our tradition, we will start our day with reveille at 7 a.m. and wind down with retreat at 5 p.m. As in the past, we will remain open until 6 p.m., as long as there are folks using the room. Don’t forget to bring your instruments to join in the jam sessions. A great week is in the works. Be sure to check our websites often — bransondayroom.com and bransonveteranswebsite.com. We can probably find a snack or two, and we’ll have the coffee pot on, but the fun doesn’t start until you arrive. — Chip & Sandy Milner

Students get history lesson from veterans Matthew Matney, College of the Ozarks In May, 16 College of the Ozarks students and eight Merchant Marine, Navy, and 8th Army Air Corps veterans from World War II traveled across the pond to England to participate in the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. The Battle of the Atlantic, which began in the mid-1940s and continued through the end of 1943, put the pressure on sailors and merchant seamen to safely get supplies to the Allied Forces in Europe. The German UBoats attempted daily to stop such advances, with 36,200 sailors and 36,000 merchant seamen lost. The Battle is still regarded as the dominating factor through World War II. From the air space above Europe, the 8th Army Air Corps defended Allied troops and aided in achieving victory in Europe, even at the loss of thousands of lives. Four veterans participating in the trip, Walter Fitzmaurice, Harold Gilbert, Tom Easterly and Dale Deaver, served in the 8th Army Air Corps, while veterans Mack Paynter, Don Ellwood, Bill Ryan and John Haynes, were seamen in the Merchant Marines and Navy. All of the veterans were stationed in various locations of England during World War II. During the trip, the contingent traveled to memorials and historic sites in cities such as Cambridge, London and Liverpool. They visited air fields and ports, which were crucial for the English Royal Air Force and Allies in holding off invading Nazis. The group toured

the Churchill Museum and cabinet war rooms located underneath the streets of London, from where the British Prime Minister directed much of the war efforts. Veterans and students participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Cambridge American Cemetery, where the graves of 3,812 American military dead and 5,127 names of missing Americans from the air war over Europe and the Battle of the Atlantic are found. Members of the group were also hon-

ored to serve as the only American representatives for the official 70th Anniversary Commemoration service, in the Liverpool Cathedral. Over 2,500 dignitaries of Great Britain were in attendance, including members of the Royal family. Students learned about personal experiences, such as Haynes account of being aboard the S.S. Eldena bound to Murmansk, Russia, in the first convoy to feel the full fury of German attacks. Deaver showed the group

around the small air base in Molesworth, England, where he was stationed and worked alongside members of the Royal Air Force. For the first time since the conclusion of the war, Gilbert walked the church grounds of a village where his B-17 crew was honored by local British citizens. The trip was part of the College of the Ozarks Patriotic Education Travel Program, wherein students accompany veterans to their original battle sites to learn about living history from the individuals who experienced it. The student participants from C of O are hand-selected for the rare opportunity to learn directly from the veterans. The students’ chief responsibility while on the trips is to care for their veterans, while listening to their stories and documenting them for future generations to hear and read. The life-changing experience impacts College of the Ozarks students, not only in their overall knowledge of the historical events, but also by providing them with a unique opportunity to serve and connect with their veterans. Since the inaugural trip in 2009, 14 trips have been taken with approximately 200 students and 100 veterans participating. ‘Four Star Country Boy’ shows at C of O Submitted by College of the Ozarks College of the Ozarks history is jumping off of the page and onto the stage this fall at The Keeter Center. “Four Star Country Boy,” an original play that tells the story of School of the Ozarks alumnus retired U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Terrance R. Dake, a Vietnam War veteran who rose in the ranks to become assistant commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. Adapted for stage by professor Mark Young from the book “The Four Generals of Hard Work U,” a book written by C of O President Jerry Davis, the play opens at The Keeter Center in October. Performances are free, and are open to the public through December. The production process began early in the summer. “President Davis allowed me to have some creative license with this produc-

tion,” Young said. “We wanted the story to be portrayed accurately, but we knew it wouldn’t be an exact representation of what’s in the book.” With the assistance of 16 student workers from the Jones Theatre Company, he began the drafting process of the script. This provided a unique learning opportunity for the students involved. “For past productions, we’ve used proven scripts that have been produced, either on Broadway or around the country,” Young said. “But this one is creating it from scratch, from the very beginning.” For music and theatre major Haly Johnson, honoring the General and his accomplishments was important. “I have a lot of respect for General Dake and his ability to show great character through all that he has experienced,” Johnson said. “He’s an honorable man

and we wanted to get his story right.” With an emphasis on detail, Young searched for a crucial element of Dake’s story — an authentic Vietnam-era helicopter. He began researching military equipment retirement storage locations and other theatrical production companies. After months of research, he found a helicopter available at the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company in Australia. After contacting the theater’s technical director, the helicopter was purchased and arrangements were made for the long journey to campus. “I was totally amazed that we were able to find one,” Young said. “I couldn’t wait for the audience to watch us fire it up and see it work.” For more information about performance dates, please visit cofo.edu.

Branson garden ‘a real treat’ for veterans Ben Kinel, Veterans Memorial Garden In case you have not been by Branson’s Veterans Memorial Garden at the intersection of 76 Country Boulevard and Roark Valley Road lately, you have missed a real treat in nature. The 2013 version of the Memorial Garden is, according to our visitors, better than ever. Hibiscus blooms as large as a dinner plate in pink, white and purple really grab your attention, along with the same colors, plus red, in a dozen huge crape myrtle bushes spread out over the garden. Petunias, vinca and chartreuse potato vine add additional color to the garden. New signage has been added welcoming visitors to the garden this year. Also, the Branson Board of Realtors donated the cost of three directional street signs showing visitors the way to our parking lot. Another new idea came from some of our visitors who suggested that we erect a donation box near the exit to the garden for those who wish to make a small contribution to the ongoing upkeep. The strong metal box with information signage attached was put in place recently. We depend on donations to fund the cost of maintaining the garden and hope this opportunity for guests to participate will be successful. We have been blessed with large groups from the College of the Ozarks and the Branson United Methodist Church volunteering to help keep the garden in great shape. We welcome anyone who would like to give a few hours each month to this beautiful flower garden. If you live out of the area and wish to volunteer a few hours during your next visit to Branson, please call our toll-free number 888-332-3535, or for locals call 417-336-1900, to schedule a work date. Another new feature of our growth is the addition of a website giving lots of information about the memorial garden. There is even a page where you can email us your comments and another where you can find instructions on how and where to send us a few dollars to help maintain the Veterans Memorial Garden. To view the website, visit veteransmemorialgarden.com

and scroll through the pages. You will end up on the gallery page which showcases many beautiful pictures of the garden. Click on any small picture to enlarge it. There is also a link where you can forward the domain name on to a fellow veteran and they can visit the website too. We would appreciate your help in spreading the word that Branson cares about veterans and will never forget your sacrifices. A Vietnam veterans organization recently held a memorial in honor of those missing in action from their unit at the garden which was very impressive. More than 50 combat veterans of that war attended and honored each of those from their unit who are still missing in action or held as prisoners of war. A large wreath was placed

in the garden in their memory during the ceremony. We were honored when they asked permission to hold this reunion in the garden. That is exactly what this garden was established for and we invite all military units to schedule any type of ceremony such as this one. There will be no charge for use of the memorial garden. We would like to hear from veterans or their families who read this article and visit our website. This garden is dedicated to all veterans and their families by the citizens of Branson as a way of saying “thank you” for your service. We try to show our appreciation on a daily basis to all veterans and we realize that “Freedom does not come free.” Please visit your garden the next time you are in Branson.

Vets tribute honored by city of Branson Submitted by the city of Branson The recipient of the Branson Tree Board’s Beautification Award for July 2013 was the Veteran’s Memorial Garden located at the corner of 76 Country Boulevard and Roark Valley Road. The garden has attracted the attention of visitors and residents alike for many years. Ben Kinel and other volunteers work to maintain the garden. “The garden is a symbol of a community who is repaying sacrifices,” Kinel said. “Veterans sacrifice family, friends and often their lives. We wanted to show our appreciation to those brave men and women who serve in our military.” The beautification awards are presented on a monthly basis between April and October. The criteria for nominations are that it is a commercial property located within the Branson city limits and that the landscaped area is highly visible to the general public.
