Report JEWD 2014
Information and texts to be displayed: - What is JEWD? Whole world is looking for causes that make young people see themselves as major players in the transformation of the society around them, citizens who want to do things that are really relevant for everyone. By fostering the Junior Enterprise concept, we have seen how students in different places are totally connected with each other. Besides studying, they can appear to the real market, while still having the opportunity to design their practical learning and management experiences. Reaching continental scale, the JE Network has made different countries work together and start aligning their values, business models and processes. Now, the Junior Entrepreneurs can skip another step, going further, focused on the main goal of getting the global recognition. We believe that these students have the same kind of thoughts, with the ambition and adaptability that will mark our generation. This is why we launched JEWD, the Junior Enterprise World Day. JEWD was created to celebrate the JE Networking around the world, a day in which students of the global Network commemorate their work, achievements, progress and the future plans. Universities, cities, countries, all impacted by the activities made in one day specially dedicated to the Junior Enterprises. The idea of this initiative was born in 2013, during the revision of the Ambassadors Program. In order to implement the international strategy, it became apparent that it is essential to develop projects designed to deliver the results that will help achieve the “Global Recognition of the JE Concept” in 2018, and JEWD is an important part of that. JEWD happens during the Global Entrepreneurship Week, “the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare’’. The personal commitment of each Junior Entrepreneur is essential to this strategy in order to position the JE Network as an economical initiative, focusing on generating business and social growth. The higher the support of Junior Enterprises and its members during JEWD, the greater the endorsement of Junior Enterprises in the minds of our most important stakeholders.
01
- The main goal of JEWD This initiative has the function to engage Junior Enterprises all around the world to work together for a common cause: the recognition of the Junior Enterprise Concept. Over the years, the intention is to have the JEWD increasingly evident through activities aimed on fostering entrepreneurship. Events, lectures, workshops, community activities, trainings, mobilizations, are examples of activities already used to commemorate the JEWD globally. As we can notice, such activities constitute a favorable environment for securing the purposes that permeates the Junior Enterprise Network worldwide. Celebrating JEWD is also a time to foster our concept with other interested parties, such as market customers and partners, universities and society. JEWD represents an important way of showing that the Junior Enterprises have to think and work together for the alignment of the Network. This is an opportunity to show our level of engaging with the Network pillars, which have to be present every city where the Junior Enterprises are located. JEWD offers the possibility of a day dedicated to expanding our ideas on a commemorative and shared way.
- When does JEWD happen? In 2014, we had the first edition of the Junior Enterprise World Day, and it happened on November 22nd. So, save the date! JEWD will occur on November 22nd every year, during the Global Entrepreneurship Week, the most important period for the celebrations and plans of the entrepreneurship world.
- The Internal View At first, the idea of JEWD was to have a day that the Junior Enterprises from all over the world would have a common action to celebrate JEWD. This action had to be something that would have a social impact of some sort. We were going to use the dissemination of such practices as a general approximation of the Junior Enterprise Network and other organizations, 02
especially using our social medias. During the initiative, to involve even more our agents, we all would be part of a competition, and the Junior Enterprise who scored the most points would receive a prize. The members of JADE and Brasil JĂşnior that were responsible for Global Public Affairs, decided that JEWD would be done in 2014 for the first time. Therefore, the initiative would happen in a more simplified way, just to acclimate our Junior Entrepreneurs in this practice, collect expectations for the next editions and analyse how would be the commitment of these people with our general celebration.
- Legality Issues of the Day An international day, also known as an international observance, international dedication or international anniversary of an awareness day. Is a period of time to observe some issue of global interest or concern. This is used to commemorate, promote and mobilize people for some kind of action. For a specific day to be recognised as an official international day, it has to be approved by the United Nations, which is the organisation that is responsible for regulating international days. There are few conditions for a day to be put up for approval: I) it has to have a global impact; II) be present in the whole world; III) needs to be something which is already established and causing impact. The entire process could take a few years, especially because before the day is considered oficially by the United Nations, it has to be already generating some kind of impact. Besides, there is no legal consequence for an organization to simply declare an international day for its network. It would just be an unofficial observance and can be commemorated by the network on the determined day. Since the official process could take some time, JEWD had its first edition on 2014. During this period we can work towards official recognition as soon as the project is consolidated enough. 03
- Overview - JEWD 2014 During the General Assembly of Junior Enterprise World Conference (JEWC) 2014, happened the Junior Enterprise Global Forum and the result was the Memorandum of Understanding. This document was signed by all the representatives of all Confederations, that states, among others, that all our members will try to level up the understanding of the Junior Enterprise concept in their countries. This memorandum possibilities the Junior Enterprise Movement to thrive towards a common mission and identity. As mentioned above, the first edition was a simplified version of the main idea for the event. The marketing plan was shorter than it would be commonly, the partnerships were institutional and focused on our internal Network, like with the European Confederations and Brazilian Federations, for example. The main objective was to increase the visibility of JEWD’s initiative. For the next editions, the focus will be fostered, not only around the Junior Entrepreneurs, but also between our most important stakeholders. We want them all to be totally involved on JEWD’s Celebration. In 2014, potential organizations were pointed to be official supporters of our project during next year. For 2014’s edition, we used social medias to spread messages, photos and videos under the hashtag #CelebrateJEWD. Through the internet, we could gather feedback, observe the Junior Entrepreneurs reactions and research some key aspects of the initiative. Before JEWD, a Thunderclap campaign was launched, and the objective was to get the Junior Entrepreneurs support, so that on 22nd of November, the campaing could have a historical reach. Thousands of people would watch our day-by-day at work, and the most important, all at the same time. On JEWD’s first edition, the focus was different from what was proposed in the initial strategy. On November, 22nd, the main activities from Junior Enterprises were symbolic, exploring different types of actions that the Junior Entrepreneurs promoted. Below, we evidenced some Junior Enterprises, Nucleos, Federations and Confederations, from different part of the world, which made JEWD happen last year.
04
- Next steps - JEWD 2015. For enabling JEWD to happen in 2014, it was decided to reduce some steps that did not happen during that beta edition, however those ideas will be implemented during the next editions. Among these activities, we can include a developed marketing plan, the obtainment of official support (sponsors) for the initiative, fundraising and rewarding the Junior Enterprises WorldWide in some kind of competitions. The Marketing Plan mentioned was made for the purpose of describing the current market position of our project, besides its marketing strategy, this way, we could clearly show what steps would be undertaken to achieve the JEWD's marketing objectives. The idea of JEWD is based on specific pillars, like skills development, entrepreneurial culture, social impact and youth citizenship. We believe that these pillars represent the main objectives that we have as Junior Entrepreneurs, thus serving as a guide and a source of motivation for all Junior Enterprises WorldWide. JEWD can also have others courses of actions to achieve its main goal, to gain exposure for the JE Concept as a step towards recognition and to involve partnerships. In 2015, the initiative will start focused on engaging the global network of Junior Enterprises on working towards a common goal together and leveraging those results for pillar of Global Public Affairs. This will bring together all National Confederations, another instances and the JEs around the world, with the objective of doing good things to celebrate JEWD and see how they can directly contribute to our international results.
- Testimonials “There is nothing more rewarding than the feeling of belonging to a great Network where everyone is essencial parts and slogans are: learn and innovate! If past generations submitted their happiness in things that can easily lose after taking responsibility in large companies, I think we can be happy and especially proud to say that our experience in the Junior Enterprise Network, besides promoting professional maturity, prepares us to transform the world of work in an efficient place which contemplates what the Junior Enterprises really are. Let's celebrate JEWD, celebrate the future 05
entrepreneurs of the world!" (Ouwaïs Marrakchi - Business Development Manager - Centrale Lille Projets – Lille, France) "We've already proved that being a Junior Entrepreneur is an incredible professional experience that gives us the opportunity to transform in practice what we have learned at the University. During my second year working in my Junior Enterprise, I also discovered how to lead a team. Leadership has nothing to do with titles. Leadership to me is the ability to turn the vision into reality; means that you are working for a purpose higher than yourself! Leadership is also your ability to lead your team to something over and at the same time continue encouraging people around you to do the best to achieve something bigger every day, in order to create shared vision, effort and success ." (Marine Van Halle - Head of Business Relations – LSM Conseil (Engineering and Management Consulting) - Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) "Being part of the Junior Enterprise Network is the biggest difference I found in my graduation. You have every day the opportunity to grow professionally, linking theory and practical parts of the course, negotiating with clients, and at the same time keep preparing for the job market. I am going further and growing personally. And most importantly: I am learning what is to work with responsibility, dedication, commitment and a lot of passion! In my Junior Enterprise, I can develop myself along with my team, I have also space to innovate and overcome me every day. Being part of a Junior Enterprise allowed me, at 22, leading a team of over 35 people, and develop people, while I was also developing myself, thus becoming the greatest experience of my life." (Raquel Labarrere – President in Strategos Political Consulting – Brasília, Brazil) "As a member of my Junior Enterprise I had the opportunity to discover new realities that go beyond the simple academic experiences. I could collaborate with excellent colleagues and see that they are all willing to face new challenges that only a Junior Enterprise can give us. It is with pleasure I remember when, along with other students of my Junior Enterprise, I organized in our city an event aimed for all Junior Enterprises in Italy. I can 06
say that it was not easy and we had to face several difficulties. However, this event's success made me feel a special pride. The best emotion for a Junior Entrepreneur is to feel part of a team and realize that all goals can only be achieved through intense teamwork!" (Francesco Canalia – Network Assistant – JEst – Vicenza, Itália.) "'Why should we hire you?' Although this is a commonly asked question in job interviews, it is always difficult to answer. You should be prepared to answer concisely with reasons to be chosen. Like assets Junior Entrepreneurs, we like this question. I believe we can provide knowledge in the practical experience we have gained during projects we engage in our Junior Enterprise, considering our strong and subtle skills, our achievements, leadership skills and multicultural experiences. Therefore, I believe that we can all be proud to be engaged in a gobal Network." (Nikolai Jowtschew Company Consulting Team – Berlin, Germany.) "I remember the first time I received the 'Volunteer Award of the Month'. As a member, without much experience, I did not imagine that my efforts had been so significant. It was about doing a few simple things that would make all the difference that day. The fact I could do something meaningful for my Junior Enterprise, has been guiding me. During the night of an event, when colleagues from other areas were being advertised as the volunteers of the month, could hardly imagine that I would be the next to be called. From that moment, I remember the feeling of happiness that is to be valued and rewarded. The feeling you have when your work is recognized. That day was then the moment I decided that I wanted to give my best for my Junior Enterprise. I can say it was the moment that defined most of who I am today." (Cosmin Crudu - Sales Manager- Business Organization for Students – Bucareste, Romania.)
