On cover... At Elgin in Montérégie Ouest, Normand Séguin and Madeleine de Vries (Ferme Devnor) have been using A.I. exclusively since 1982, with a first service average conception rate of 70%. The genetic composition of their 25-cow herd is the result of a Red Angus x Shorthorn x Fleckvieh Simmental rotational cross. This combination allows them to raise highly maternal females without compromising growth and muscle in their calves. Their PATBQ 3-year rolling average attests to the efficiency of this strategy with performance of 89 lb at birth, 2.52 lb daily gain and 742 lb at weaning (259 days). When it’s a matter of evaluating the performance of a cow-calf herd, the first instinct is to look at the weaning weight and to conclude that operations selling the heaviest calves are automatically the most profitable. Economists specializing in beef production estimate that this association may be misleading because it openly disregards two significant parameters in the profit equation: cows that don’t calve and calves that die before weaning. Studies have repeatedly shown that traits linked to reproduction have an economic impact two to five times greater than those linked to growth and carcass quality.

There is a quick and easy way to perform a relatively precise assessment regarding the efficiency of your herd. To do this, you will need the following information that producers can easily gather: • The number of females exposed for breeding • The number of those females that calved • The number of calves that died before weaning • The number of weaned calves • The total weight weaned for the entire herd Since the number of females exposed to breeding will be the denominator in calculating the different ratios that we will see below, it is important that this figure be as accurate as possible. Therefore, this number must include all the females that were exposed in your last year’s breeding season. You should not under any circumstance subtract cows that did not become pregnant or that died during this period because this would just reduce the denominator and falsely inflate your results. You also need to include in the total all females purchased externally, regardless of whether these were exposed to breeding at your farm or at the vendor’s. By the same logic, all females sold for breeding purposes must be deducted from your initial head count.
Three useful ratios to identify areas for improvement Sire
Calving rate = number of females that calved ÷ number of females exposed
Dam
This is the percentage of successful pregnancies, no matter if the calves are born alive or dead. This ratio serves to quantify the reproductive efficiency of a farm. It should be higher than 90%. Any value less than this percentage should be the focus of examination to determine if it is due to the feeding program, low fertility, or disease (e.g. abortions). Daughter
Calf mortality rate = number of dead calves from birth to weaning ÷ number of females that calved
Daughter
The goal is to restrain it to 5%. Since the majority of deaths happen in the first 24 hours, this ratio provides information on management conditions and genetics via birth weight and/or calving ease EPD’s.
• A calving ease specialist also offering muscle, depth and moderation. Heifer bull deluxe! • EPD’s: top 2% CE, BW, MCE. Top 30% growth, marbling and REA.
Weaning rate = number of weaned calves ÷ number of females exposed or = calving rate x (1 – calf mortality rate)
• Maternal line among the breed’s best for production and type. Dam has another son in A.I.
This covers all factors that may reduce your calf crop. In this sense, it is the product of the two previous ratios. Analysts recommend a value of 85% or greater. 5

Because it combines the weaning weight, reproductive efficiency and calf death loss into one single production measure, the PCW/CEB represents the most revealing performance index for a cow-calf operation. For example, an average weaning weight of 700 lb may seem impressive at first glance, but if it is associated with a weaning rate of only 70%, the pounds weaned per female exposed falls to just 490 lb (700 lb x 70%). On the other hand, a producer whose average weaning weight is 600 lb but whose weaning rate is 88% is able to market a higher total of pounds, this being 528 lb per female exposed. Among all productivity indicators, this measure is the one that has the strongest correlation with profit as it has been demonstrated that the cost of production declines as the PCW/CEB increases. The recommended minimum ratio is 500 lb per female exposed and it becomes a useful reference point when the average weaning age hovers around 210 days. Once again, any performance less than this standard should be the focus of further analysis in order to identify and correct any limiting factors. The following table allows you to compare your productivity with the average of operations enrolled on PATBQ.

Crossbred calves, that’s good... crossbred cows, that’s even better!
200 AR 20316
It is often and rightfully mentioned that crossbreeding allows for the production of better feeder calves that more adequately meet the market needs. However, what is not repeated enough is that acting on traits with low heritability, hybrid vigour - or heterosis - also produces very interesting effects on breeding females: higher conception rates, less embryonic mortality, better disease resistance, increased longevity and dairy production.

In fact, the contribution of maternal heterosis (crossbred cow) to the increase of productivity in a herd is almost twice as high as individual heterosis (crossbred calf ) (Table 1). Another significant benefit is that this gain is accompanied by savings in production costs estimated at about 10% and attributed to the fact that crossbred females produce more and longer than purebred cows (Tables 2 and 3).

Easier thanks to A.I. Well-planned crossbreeding where each breed is used according to its specialty will allow you to minimize production costs and to maximize income thanks to the breeding of rustic and economy sized cows able to wean calves that are sufficiently heavy. Table 4 proposes a strategy that can help you reach that objective. It mainly consists of making the young females in the herd produce the replacement heifers and to submit all adult cows (3 years and over) to triple terminal crossbreeding. The mid-term benefits from the use of such a system are numerous: decrease in calving problems with heifers, hybrid vigour exploited at its maximum, moderate sized and polled cows, calves meeting the industry needs thanks to crossbreeding between English and exotic breeds offering the growth, muscling and marbling sought after by the market. Of course, the use of artificial insemination will help you greatly by giving you access to a diversified line-up of high calibre sires while reducing your need to keep bulls on the farm.

• Viscous and cloudy mucus • Cow no longer accepts to be mounted • Bleeding can be seen 24 to 48 hours after the true heat period
Important to remember: • When bred, cows should have calved at least 50 days before and heifers should be 13 to 15 months old. • The best time for heat detection is early in the morning and in the evening. • The most common mistake is breeding too soon. • As a rule of thumb, a cow that is "coming into heat" should be bred the next day whereas the one that accepts to be mounted in the morning should be bred within the same day.
Kamar heatmount detectors…
for more successful A.I. in your herd.
A Kamar is a pressure sensitive device containing red ink that is glued onto the rump. When a cow is mounted, the mechanism is activated and the detector turns from white to red indicating the cow is in heat.
Helpful hints • Detector must be placed on the spine, between the tail head and the hip bones. Generally speaking, a taller cow should have the detector placed to the rear.
• Each box also contains a glue tube, a spreader and a convenient holder to cut down on sticky hands. • A thin even layer of adhesive on detector and animal gives much better adhesion than a big glob. • Important: Arrow must point forward. Do not press on plastic bubble. • Detectors do not replace adequate heat detection that remains essential morning and evening. It is an aid in identifying cows coming into estrus between your observation sessions. • A firm standing mount of at least 3 seconds is required to activate the detector.

• Usually, a partially red detector indicates a cow is coming into heat. Watch this cow closely and wait for the detector to turn fully red before breeding. • It is important to remove obstacles which might dislodge or falsely trigger a detector, such as low hanging branches, back scratchers, cattle oilers or other equipment. • Kamar detectors are now dated for better results. While they will work long after expiration date, it is recommended that you order anticipated needs as closely as possible to avoid carry-over. • Store in a cool and dry place.
