The Mick Pendergrast Collection Most collectors of Pacific art would be aware of the contribution Mick Pendergrast made to the study of Pacific Art, especially basketry. The field notes and research volumes which he compiled are now at the Auckland Museum along with his New Zealand Maori kete collection. Not all people would be aware that his large private collection of about 9000 numbered objects from throughout the Pacific Islands also included a smattering of Aboriginal material, the first of which was collected in 1965 in Darwin en route to the Papua New Guinea highlands. Mick began his professional career as a primary school teacher on the east coast of the North Island New Zealand. Then he spent time as part of the Volunteer Service Abroad teaching for eight years in the Solomon Islands, six of which were at isolated Tikopia. On his return from the Pacific, Mick took up an appointment at Waikato Museum. He then undertook field trips and research projects at other museums. When the opportunity arose to work at the Auckland Museum he accepted an assistant ethnologist position under Roger Neich. He stayed there until his retirement. Mick is best known in Aotearoa for his numerous publications on Maori fibre arts. His first published book was Te Mahi Kete (1975) and his last publication was Ka Tahi Maori Fibre Techniques (2005). It is interesting to note that Mick’s drawings in his books were done entirely by hand and are a testament to the talent of a dedicated, focussed and unique scholar.
The Archibald Robertson Collection Archibald (Archie) Robertson gained fame throughout New Zealand during the 1960’s for his comprehensive private museum collection of Maori and Pacific Island artefacts as well as his taxidermy collection. Mr Robertson was based in Papaiti near Wanganui and was an authority on the history of the area. He was also a highly regarded Maori carver and had been commended on many occasions by Maori elders on the accuracy of his carvings. He passed away in 1970 aged 88.

ORIGINAL SAMOAN WEEKLY HERALD NEWSPRINT PAGE Dated Saturday March 3 1900, printed on natural bark fibre and in superb conserved condition. The Samoa Weekly Herald appeared on 26 November 1892. It was owned and initially edited by James Rattray MacFarland, a New Zealander. However MacFarland was bankrupt within six months and the newspaper was bought by a German trader E A Grevsmuhl, but within a short time it was sold to H Denvers. At the end of 1896 Denvers bought out the competition, the Samoa Times, but was forced to sell the paper in 1898 to W A King to pay for his debts. The last issue published of the Samoa Weekly Herald was on 28 August 1900. The newspaper was sold to German financial interests in 1901 when it was revived and renamed as Samoanische Zeitung, a change which reflected the new German administration of Samoa. A SUPERB MAORI CARVED WALKING STICK (TOKOTOKO) by Jacob Heberley (Te Ati Awa descent). Late C19th, finely carved with stylised male figure joined at the elbows by a manaia figure, all above two further manaia type figures. Paua shell inset eyes (some serrated). Having lived some of his early life in Rotorua he was one of an elite group of late C19th master carvers which included Anaha Te Rahui and Patoromu Tamatea; his earliest work even predated that of another, Tene Waitere. These influential carvers facilitated the early transition of their indigenous tribal art to modern Maori art as we know it today. Much of Heberley’s work was commissioned by the New Zealand government for gifts for visiting royalty. His work was well known to European dignitaries such as Sir Walter Buller, Alexander Turnbull, Captain Gilbert Mair and Lord Ranfurly, and also accepted by many prominent Maori among tribal groups such as Ngati Kahunguna, Ngati Toa, Te Ati Awa and even Tuhoe. A similar tokotoko was commissioned by Richard John Seddon for presentation to King Edward at his coronation in 1902; it is now held in the Royal collection. PROVENANCE: Illustrated p.121, figure 79 “Jacob William Heberley of Wellington: A Maori carver in a changed world” by Roger Neich. Private collection, Martinborough. L. 94.5cm. Y number pending. Buyers Guide If you have not bought from Dunbar Sloane before, please read the following notes. Staff will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. BEFORE THE AUCTION CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS The terms and conditions under which the buyer acts at a sale are detailed at the back of this catalogue. We recommend that you read and understand these conditions of business before registering to bid at an auction. This sale is subject to the conditions of business printed in this catalogue and to the reserves. Viewing All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision to bid, is at your discretion and liability. Pre-Sale Estimates The estimated prices printed below the catalogue descriptions are in New Zealand dollars and are the approximate prices expected to be realised, excluding buyers premium. They are not definitive, they are prepared well in advance of the sale and they are subject to revision. Condition reports Dunbar Sloane Ltd will provide a verbal condition report if you would like an opinion on any particular lot prior to purchasing. All goods are sold “as is” and it is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to the condition of an item before the auction. These must be requested at least 48 hours before the start of the auction. THE AUCTION Registration To bid at the auction you will need to register for a bidding number at the front desk either during the viewing or prior to the auction. Buying at the Auction Please bid clearly and promptly using your bidding number. When you successfully purchase a lot the auctioneer will ask you for your number, and this will show on your invoice.
