New Zealand’s Leading Valuers
From the Treaty of Waitangi to the nation’s treasures held at Te Papa, our five senior valuers are some of the most trusted and experienced chattel valuers in the country. We have valued approximately $2 billion worth of chattels in the last 12 months.
We are pleased to present our first specialist Oceanic and Asian art catalogue for 2023. This catalogue follows on from our last three specialist catalogues. Our previous Oceanic sales have achieved outstanding results and have set a number of auction records for the sale of taonga in New Zealand.
We are the market leaders in this field and the only auction house in New Zealand to hold regular catalogued sales in this area. These auctions are undertaken in strict accordance with the Protected Object Act (1975) All items of taonga tuturu that fall under the act have been registered and carry a registration number which designates the taonga can only be sold to registered collectors and prohibits the items from leaving New Zealand. Like our previous catalogues, this catalogue includes a significant number of pieces that have been repatriated to New Zealand from overseas. These pieces have now been registered by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and will now remain in New Zealand. These specialist catalogues provide a venue for this to occur, and we are in ongoing discussions with collectors from overseas who are looking to repatriate taonga from overseas. We are very happy to be able to facilitate this process through these catalogues and to bring this important taonga back home to New Zealand.
This catalogue features several significant collections of Oceanic art including the collection of Bob Ching, John Perkins, and Barby Barclay. An insight into the lives of these collectors and there collecting is offered on the following pages.
This catalogue also includes a dedicated Asian art auction. These sales will now be a regular feature on our auction calendar. In the area of Asian art and antiques we offer our clients expertise that is unrivalled in New Zealand.
This sale features many outstanding pieces of Asian art including a large carved huanghuali dragon panel dating from the 19th century. This rare and superb piece was collected by the vendors in Shanghai and then bought back to New Zealand. Due to a change of life circumstances, they have decided to offer the piece for sale alongside other fine pieces of Chinese furniture and textiles from their superb collection.
Also included in the Asian catalogue is the finest offering of Tibetan pieces ever to come to the market in New Zealand. Many of these pieces were collected by the renowned British artist Geoffrey Key both in Asia and in England. They have been held in a New Zealand collection for the last fifteen years. This collection is discussed further in an essay on page 42 of the catalogue. Other important collections of Asian art are also included in the catalogue including the collection of Lieutenant Colonel Raynar-Smith who was stationed in Shanghai in the 1930s and the collection of Josette Bryan who put together a collection of Korean and Chinese pottery whilst living in Korea in the 1970s. This collection has been on long term loan at Te Papa Tongarewa and is now being offered for sale.
We hope that you enjoy reading this catalogue and we look forward to welcoming you at the viewing.
Dunbar Sloane Managing Director James Parkinson Head of Māori and Oceanic ArtBob Ching Collection
Bob Ching was a passionate and fastidious collector of taonga, fossils, bones and goldmining and sea fairing memorabilia. A Nelson based collector, with a family lineage dating back to the early settlers arriving on the ‘Will Watch’ in Nelson in 1841, Bob always felt a strong connection to Nelson and the West Coast and a deep and abiding interest the geology, fauna, and artefacts of the region. As a young man forging his career as a ship’s engineer in the 1960s Bob was able to travel around the South Island and to the Chatham Islands by sea. This enabled him to study the various New Zealand coastlines and venture further inland to the more remote areas of the South Island. His early travels piqued his interest in early New Zealand history, geology, and collecting. By the 1970s Bob had developed a keen interest in goldmining and went to work on the goldfields in Greymouth. Whilst working with the modern gold mining machinery provided him increased acuity as an engineer, more importantly he was able to pursue his interest in geology, a subject that would become a lifelong passion. In the late eighties Bob travelled as a ship’s engineer to Norway, South Africa, and many arpeggios in the South Pacific, including the Pitcairn Islands. The Pitcairn’s volcanic environment held a special interest for Bob and he spent many hours examining and collecting the early basalt artefacts scattered in and around Bounty Bay. In 1998, Bob discovered the laughing owl fossil alongside 17 other species in Greymouth when he went looking in an area of limestone rock recently exposed near Cobden Bridge. This significant find was a virtual treasure trove of fossils and bones from species, some of which have been extinct in New Zealand for up to 1700 years, including Finsch’s duck, little spotted kiwi, and Moa. There were also tuatara, skink, and Markham frog remains.
Bob was also a regular buyer of taonga, decorative art and antiques at Dunbar Sloane auctions where he amassed a significant collection. In his own words a “life’s experience thoroughly enjoyed” Bob Ching, was a sea fairing adventurer, who travelled the world examining, meticulously cataloguing, and collecting geological fauna and artefacts. In this catalogue we are pleased to offer the Bob Ching collection. Items include basalt artefacts from the Pitcairn Islands, bones and fossils from his quarry finds, and important taonga. Of note are two superb hei tiki (lots 47, 50), a whale bone kotiate (lot 43), and a good 18th century mere pounamu (lot 46).
John Perkins Collection
After 12 years flying with the Royal Navy, in 1965 John Perkins emigrated to Australia with his Australian wife where he completed studies for an Australian pilot’s license. Subsequently, he accepted a job with Territory Airlines where he took up flying duties mainly flying Cessnas and light twins around the Madang Province on the northern coast of mainland Papua New Guinea. Madang has many of the country’s highest peaks, active volcanoes and its biggest mix of languages. John and his wife loved Madang and were keen to settle there.
After two years they began to open small trade stores in the bush in places only accessible by plane. By 1969 they had established seven of these and decided to purchase their own Cessna 185. They then started buying raw coffee beans from the locals in the Ramu Valley and the Highlands, shipping them to a coffee exporter in Lae. In the early 70’s a severe frost in the main coffee growing area of Brazil decimated a large portion of their crop forcing up the price threefold in a matter of weeks. This encouraged more locals to plant coffee and for John to buy a second Cessna to meet the demand. John was constantly being offered artefacts by the locals and initially bought some for himself and then to sell to dealers in Madang and elsewhere in the Territory.
By the mid 70’s with three young children John and his wife realised they would need to move south for their secondary education. After holidaying in NZ in 1976 they decided to settle in Queenstown, moving there in 1978 along with a very large collection of artefacts. We are pleased to offer a superb selection of Ramu River paddles, ornate house boards and shields, feast bowls, carved figures, and body adornments from Johns extensive early 1970s Madang Province collection.
Barbara Barclay Collection
Barby Barclay has always been an avid student of pottery, both as a maker and a collector. Whilst living in Papua New Guinea with her Husband Bill from 1968 – 1975, she made many expeditions to the highlands and outlying areas to learn local potting techniques and to collect pottery and other local art, and in some cases get her hands in the clay with the local pottery makers. Her first tour in 1968 was to the pottery villages on the Yuat and the Chambri Lakes region with well-known art dealer Ron Perry. In Perry’s book on Papua New Guinean art “Art Dealer in the Last Unknown” Barby writes that the trip was a highlight of her life. As a potter she was keen look at every pot possible and when they arrived at places like Dimitri (on the Yuat River) Ron made a point of telling everyone to bring out pots. Following this trip, Barby was commissioned to publish a detailed article in “Pottery Australia” about pottery making techniques in the East Sepik. Barby made another trip with well-known potter Margaret Tuckson who together with Patricia May went on to publish the seminal reference book “The Traditional Pottery of Papua New Guinea.”
Barby returned to New Zealand in 1975 with her large pottery collection, of which we are delighted to offer the remaining pieces. Among these are a selection of coiled clay raku fired cooking vessels and various ceramic ornaments. Of special note are two raku fired mythological roof gable figures from the Aibom Village known for its highly innovative zoomorphic motifs made in high relief and the precious value of these items for exchange.

The body of the drum with fine intricate curvilinear designs. Complete with drumstick. Carved from a felled tree the slit drum, or garamut, is one of the most important instruments in the Sepik River region. These drums are typically kept in the men’s ritual house for ceremonies such as male initiations. The finials of the garamut are ornamented with figures characteristic of the Sepik region with their long, hooked noses and tiered headdresses. These figures represent important ancestors and demonstrate clan affiliation. The people of the Sepik area understand the drum’s sound as its “voice.” This voice can carry long distances to announce meetings, call individuals, issue warnings, and even contact neighboring villages. Communication occurs through a complex series of rhythms and tones beat out with a wooden stick by an initiated man. More than just an instrument, this drum is central to the lives the entire community in the Ramu river region.

A Large And Impressive Moa Leg Bone
Found at Pyramid Valley, North Canterbury. Pyramid Valley in the Hurunui District of New Zealand is located near Waikari in the North Canterbury region 80 km north-west of Christchurch. It is well known for its prominent limestone rock formations. On the foot of the valley is a swamp which became notable in 1939 as New Zealand’s largest paleontological site for moa fossils. The swamp was formed around 18,000 BC and was drained some 2,000 years ago. It provided a lush vegetation which attracted five different moa species. In 1938 the landowners Joseph and Rob Hodgen found three large bones of Dinornis giganteus in the swamp. They opened this area for excavations and in the early 1940s fossil hunters like Roger Duff, Jim Eyles, and many others began their research at this site. The remains of long extinct birds were unearthed, including more than 183 complete moa skeletons and tens of thousands of fossil bone fragments from about 46 species of birds.

A Collection of Fine Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Items from the Artist Geoffrey Key
The Tibetan and Mongolian Vajrayana Buddhist ritual items in this catalogue (lots 921-952) were collected by the artist Geoffrey Key. Geoffrey Key is an important British sculptor and painter and has had a career that spans five decades. His contemporary figurative work is held in numerous public collections including collections in Asia. Key’s interest in Asian art and culture had a profound effect on his artistic practice.
In the early 1990s Geoffrey Key visited Hong Kong to exhibit his work in a gallery at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. This first visit to Asia was to prove a catalyst for a change in his use of colour, moving from muted tones to a more full and vibrant palate. It is this work for which he is now best known. It is most likely that his interest in collecting Vajrayana Buddhist art began during this first visit to Asia.
The pieces in this collection were purchased in Asia and in England, notably from the auction house Spink & Son. The collection includes rare examples of Gau (amulet boxes), Vajra, Vajra Katari (ritual chopping knives) and Phurba (ritual daggers) from Tibet and Mongolia. These pieces are associated with the practice of Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism.
Vajrayana Buddhism is a form of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in India in the 6th century and then took root in Tibet in the 7th and 8th centuries and then spread into Mongolia and across the Himalayan region. It incorporates elements of the indigenous Tibetan religion Yungdrug Bon into is system of practices.
Although Vajrayana Buddhism shares many elements of its practice with the schools of Mahayana Buddhism it also takes the view that by adopting the correct practices that it is possible to ‘awaken’ or become ‘enlightened’ in a single lifetime. Here it uses the exemplars of early practice, the mahassiddhas and cave meditators Milarepa, Tilopa and Padmasambhava.
Vajrayana Buddhism, unlike other forms of Buddhism, makes no distinction between samsara and nirvana as means to achieve enlightenment. Passions and aversions alike are embraced as means to awakening. Vajrayana Buddhism upholds the Mahayana bodhisattva ideal, however its pantheon of celestial beings is more extensive, including a wealth of fierce protector deities and dakinis (female deities). Central to the practices is a relationship with a teacher or guru – usually a Tibetan Lama who guides the student. The teacher initiates the student into the esoteric practices in a graduated way. Ritual is a crucial element of this, and it includes repetition of mantras (sacred syllables and verses), visualization of mandalas (sacred diagrams), sacred hand gestures (mudras), prostrations and the use of sacred objects such as phurba, vajra katari and dorje.
Tantric practices are largely kept secret, to preserve the sanctity of the teachings and protect practitioners from energies they have not yet been trained to handle and which are deemed to be dangerous for the uninitiated. They are passed on from teacher to student when the teacher deems that the student is ready and has completed the correct preliminary practices (ngondro).
The pieces in this collection – the gau, dorje, phurba and vajra-katari are all items that are used in these esoteric tantric Buddhist practices. They date from the 18th to the early 20th century. Of note in this fine collection are the phurba or ritual daggers. Rituals using the phurba are attested to in Indian Buddhist texts which date from A. D 600-900. These were first studied by maters of Vajrayana Buddhism in India – most notably the mahassiddha Padmasambhava.
When Buddhist tantric practice spread to Tibet and the Himalayan region these phurba rituals were part of the extensive body of practices that the Tibetan and Mongolian people inherited. Within these practices the phurba has many different uses including assisting in protection from harmful forces, removing obstacles, assistance in speed or trance walking, use in sacred dances, consecration of sacred spaces and for spiritually ‘cleaning’ buildings or land.
The blade of the phurba typically issues from the jaws of a sacred makara, a mythical water or sea monster. The makara is an ancient Indian symbol of power, and it is utilised in a large variety of tantric ‘weapons’ and is emblematic of firm resolve or unshakeability. The makara is also a symbol for the overcoming or cutting through of the three root poisons of ignorance, attachment and aversion central to all forms of Buddhist practice.
The phurba in this offering that were historically collected by Geoffrey Key range from early plain metal examples to more fine and elaborate examples that incorporate bone, turquoise and coral inlay that originate from both Tibet and Mongolia. In addition to the makara many also incorporate the iconographical images of fierce protector deities and other mythical animals which are a central part of Vajrayana Buddhist practice. They have important ritualistic uses in tantric Buddhist practice as do the many other items in this collection. They are also fine examples of Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhist decorative art that date from the 18th to the early 20th century.

A Fine and Rare Japanese Taima Mandala
Hand Painted Thangka The Taima Mandala represents the Pure Land of the Buddha Amida ( Amitābha) bordered on three sides by parables from the Sutra on the Meditation on the Buddha of Infinite Life. This text recounts the promise at the core of the Japanese Pure Land School teaching: that those who concentrate on the Buddha Amida during life, and recite his name, will be escorted to his Pure Land, known as the Western Paradise, at the final moment of death. In that Pure land they will achieve enlightenment. This fine and rare Japanese thangka depicts an enormous palace with a golden pond presided over by Amida and his retinue. Musicians, dancers, and thirty-seven different types of celestial beings fill the skies and pavilions, surrounding the pond in the foreground. Those being born into the Pure Land emerge from lotus buds growing up through the water. The parables tell the story of Queen Vaidehi, who achieved birth there by performing sixteen meditations presented to her by Amida. The scenes along the bottom represent the nine levels of birth in the Pure Land, from lowest to highest. Based on Chinese Tang-dynasty compositions, the Taima Mandala was introduced to Japan in the Nara period (710–84), along with teachings about Amida’s Pure Land.

Telephone bidding must be arranged with Dunbar Sloane Ltd prior to the sale and is subject to a minimum lot estimate of $500 or greater. Please note that the auctioneer determines the increments in bidding, not the telephone bidder. We accept no responsibility if for whatever reason we are unable to contact you and as such recommend leaving a covering bid.
4. Live Online Bidding
We offer live online bidding on our website: www.dunbarsloane.co.nz
Registering online does not automatically register to bid, and further identification maybe required, especially if you are an International client.
