Issued by Chief Police Magistrate Felton Matthew, also signed by Chief Protector of Aborigines George Clarke. Interestingly the warrant was issued to Ngapuhi Chief Motutara to make the arrest. Motutara together with his brother in law Whakaariki led the invasion by the Northern Tribes into the Waikato, as well as numerous other campaigns. There is also an accompanying translation of the warrant in Maori, presumably for Chief Motutara’s benefit. A proclamation was made by Governor Fitzroy offering a $50 reward for the apprehension of Parehoro, and the non waiver of the Crown’s right of pre-emption over any land belonging to the Kawakawa or Wangarei tribes. As it transpired a substantial amount of land was seized Poupowhenua (Marsden Point) as a result of the robbery. The Reverend Samuel had long before identified the particular piece of ground as being eminently suited for a township. An exceptionally rare pair of documents. $4,000 - $6,000

The Working Men’s Educational Union was a philanthropic organisation founded in London in 1852. One of its aims was to provide free education for the working classes through public lectures at numerous venues across the city. During the 1850s it published at least 400 different large format lithographic wall hangings, which it called ‘Diagrams’, that were designed to illustrate lectures on a wide variety of subjects. They were produced on calico to avoid paper duty and were available for purchase at the Union’s premises in Skinner Street, Clerkenwell and King William Street, near London Bridge. In 1854 the Union advertised a series of these Diagrams titled Missionary Scenes, ‘Being twenty coloured Diagrams upon Missionary Trials, Perils, and Insults, Heathen Superstitions, Cruelties, etc; suited for Missionary Lectures. It is likely that the present Diagram, of which we can trace no other extant example, formed part of this Missionary series. Indeed, it seems reasonable to posit that the ‘M’ preceding the sequence number ‘10’ at lower right stands for ‘Missionary’. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds fifteen of these works from the same series depicting scenes from New Zealand, Australia, Torres Strait, Pacific Islands and South Africa.

104 (-) The booke of Common prayer, and administration of the Sacraments and other rites and ceremonies in the Church of England (and) The psalter or psalmes of Dauid, after the translation of the great Bible. Imprinted at London: by Christopher Barker, printer to the Queenes maiestie (1580) ESTC S93790; STC (2nd ed) 16307; Griffiths 1580:1 Folio, pages unnumbered (448pp); signatures (3 dots in triangle)8 (paragraph mark)10 A-P8 Q6 A-K8 Black letter with large woodcut initials. The Psalter has seperate title-page and register. This edition is exceptionally rare, three recorded copies - at British Library (2) and at John Rylands Library, all of which are defective and all lack title leaf. No copy in Book Auction Records since 1908. Binding is full tree calf (but not recent) rebacking with red morocco title-label, mild cracking to joints but a sound and attractive copy. Condition - Lacks the first four leaves, otherwise complete: 220 leaves present of 224; Good margins (page size 27 x 18cm); foot of of first few leaves has been damped, causing brittleness of lower margin with occasional short loss affecting a few words from bottom of corner of Q2’ 2 leaves of first signature loose, these mildly frayed at outer edges; tiny wormhole in some lower margins (not affecting text) some mild staining and browning. A very, very rare Elizabethan volume, unusually with no example in North America, only the 2 in London and one in Manchester. Here under Elizabeth I, the theology of the Holy Communion combined that of previous Prayer Books from 1549 and 1552. Here are printed the sentences for the administration of the Holy Sacraments that combine the traditional sentence incorporating the Catholic idea of transubstantiation with the reformist view of a memorial feast. Now under Elizabeth I as Governor of the church, we have the combination that allows different understandings to be held in the doctrine of the Real Presence which Elizabeth held to be both proper and meaningful. This was a theology comfortable and workable to the present day in the world-wide Anglican Communion and Episcopalian Churches. Along with other changes it is a credit to Elizabethan statesmanship which also allowed a breadth in understanding that was more than just timely and practical, it allowed a wider compass of acceptance. $50,000 - $100,000
