WELCOME A triumphant theme resonates throughout the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s 56th annual concert season.
delivers an extensive outreach and education programme that operates beyond the concert stage. Next year 20,000 people will experience the orchestra through these projects.
Throughout the year the orchestra will be performing some of the greatest works of the symphonic repertoire including major new works written for the CSO by two of this country’s leading composers. The orchestra will be sharing the stage with the best of international and national artists including an exclusive New Zealand performance by one of the world’s most prominent rock musicians, voice of System of a Down, Serj Tankian.
All of this is made possible by the generous support of our funders and sponsors. AMI Insurance has been a loyal supporter of the CSO for almost 20 years and in 2014 this continues with AMI’s sponsorship of the Ashburton and Timaru regional touring programme, CSO on the Road. We are thrilled to be able to announce that from 2014 Leigh’s Construction will be our new Principal Sponsor.
Following the success of our inaugural composer focus festival of 2013, this season will see the orchestra explore the work of one of the greatest musical innovators of all time – Ludwig van Beethoven. With four concerts over nine days the Beethoven and Beyond festival includes some of the composers most groundbreaking works. In keeping with Beethoven’s adventurous spirit the festival includes three works by living composers who each offer their own unique voice to this series.
As many of you will be aware a large number of our concerts during 2013 sold out. We would urge you to book early to avoid disappointment. We would also like to take this opportunity to offer our thanks to our audience members. We are very fortunate to benefit from your loyalty and passion and it is your unwavering belief in what we do that inspires us to continue in our endeavours. This year we would like to dedicate our concert season to you.
At the heart of the CSO lies a commitment to ensuring that people of all ages and walks of life have the opportunity to experience live instrumental music. To support this belief the orchestra

DEAR
MUSIC LOVER On behalf of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra I warmly share with you our 2014 Concert Season. It’s a season full of great orchestral masterpieces, wonderful local and international soloists and plenty of surprises.
The orchestra has a big year to prepare for, with a new symphony from Ritchie (no.4), Brahms symphony no.4, Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, Messiaen’s L’Ascension and Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, not to mention three Beethoven symphonies (nos. 4,7 & 8), the violin concerto with Bella Hristova, and Piano concertos no.3 & no.5 with Jian Liu and Michael Endres respectively as part of the festival.
A highlight of the year is Mahler’s Symphony no.2, the “Resurrection”. The CSO will combine with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, singers Amanda Atlas and Bianca Andrew and the Christchurch City Choir to amass the huge forces for this monumental work. Christchurch doesn’t get to hear Mahler often, so it’s a project I particularly look forward to, and one you shouldn’t miss.
CSO Presents is once again bursting with fun, flair and variety. From the bright lights of Broadway to the brilliance of brass, this series promises to offer something for everyone. We’re thrilled to be collaborating with some of this country’s brightest and best including award winning Woolston Brass, Christchurch City Choir, the University of Canterbury Chamber Choir and the fabulous Christchurch Pops Choir. We’ll also be celebrating the re-opening of the Isaac Theatre Royal with a Gilbert and Sullivan inspired Last Night of the Proms and a festive conclusion to the year with A Canterbury Christmas.
Following the sell-out success of our Mozart festival in 2013, we’re proud to bring you a festival dedicated to the music of Beethoven in 2014, with each concert also featuring a symphony and a concerto from the master alongside one work from a living composer. Finnish composer Haapamaki’s “Signature” and Ross Harris’ “Te Moanapouri” are two of these, and the third is the stunning “Lycanthropy Aria” from German composer Torsten Rasch’s bload-soaked opera “The Duchess of Malfi”. “Lycanthropy” means “turning into a wolf” and the extraordinary Australian counter tenor Tobias Cole will be performing that feat for your enjoyment.
In a one off, exclusive New Zealand performance, international rock superstar Serj Tankian will also be joining forces with the CSO. As part of his sold out international tour for his new album, Orca, Serj will be performing excerpts from this album alongside his previous orchestra and band collaboration – Elect the Dead Symphony. With musical influences that span jazz, classical, hip hop and the music of his Armenian heritage, this promises to be a very special evening.
NZ artists performing with us in 2014 include Natalia Lomeiko playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Mark Menzies (violin) and Ashley Brown (cello) playing Schnittke’s genre (and mind) bending Concerto Grosso no.2 as well as conductor Hamish McKeich, who conducts the second concert in our masterworks series.
It’s never been a better time to subscribe and I encourage you to do so. We’ve regularly sold out concerts in 2013 and with the fire, passion, virtuosity and lyricism of the 2014 season, a stunning roster of soloists and the dedication and flamboyance of your orchestra, expect more of the same.
International stars include Russian piano legend Mikhail Voskressensky (although you only get to hear his Left Hand in action in Ravel’s concerto!), German piano superstar Bernd Glemser playing Brahms second concerto, violinist Chloe Hanslip playing the Sibelius Violin concerto and Josef Luptak tacking Dvorak’s towering cello concerto. I’m particularly pleased to invite Russian conductor Mark Kadin, who is making a big career at home and abroad, but who I remember from our shared days in Vladimir Ponkin’s conducting class in Moscow more than twenty years ago.
See you there! Tom Woods Chief Conductor

A MESSAGE FROM OUR
PRINCIPAL SPONSOR It is with real pride that Leighs Construction heads into 2014 as the Principal Sponsor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The CSO is so incredibly important to Christchurch – it would be hard to imagine a 21st century city existing without a vibrant and dynamic arts scene and the CSO is at the heart of this city, from its diverse and engaging concert programmes to its belief in what music can and does bring to our communities. We believe, that as a leading commercial project delivery and construction company, we also have a huge role to play in the rebuild and have a real responsibility to ensure the greater Christchurch community carries on and prospers and this goes well beyond just building buildings. Leighs Construction is pleased to contribute to the continuing success of the orchestra and we’re looking forward to a 2014 concert season that is full of outstanding artists, new works and exciting collaborations. We applaud the accomplished orchestra who continue to rise to the many challenges that are still presented to them and perform at the highest level both in concert and throughout the many activities they undertake within our communities. We hope you enjoy the 2014 season and wish you all the best for the year. Anthony Leighs Managing Director

Date SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY, 7.30PM Venue AIR FORCE MUSEUM OF NEW ZEALAND, WIGRAM
A fanfare, a world premiere and an enduring classic are a fitting start to the CSO’s 2014 season. Commissioned by the CSO to commemorate the opening of the Christchurch Art Gallery, Gareth Farr’s fanfare Te Puna o Waiwhetu heralds the start of the Lamb and Hayward Masterworks Series. Finding its inspiration in another landmark of Christchurch, we are proud to be premiering Anthony Ritchie’s Symphony No.4. The symphony takes as its point of departure a book called The Way of the Cross, which combines images of sculptures by Christchurch based sculptor, Llew Summers with poems by Bernadette Hall. Summers’ 14 sculptures entitled The Stations of the Cross were created for the Christchurch Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in 2000. Sibelius’ violin concerto is the most frequently recorded and performed violin concerto of the 20th century. It is a deeply expressive and emotional work that places considerable virtuostic demands upon the soloist. Containing exquisitely beautiful melodies and masterly orchestration, Sibelius’ only concerto is truly a master work. British violinist Chloë Hanslip has already established herself as an artist of distinction on the international stage appearing with renowned orchestras such as Tokyo Symphony, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and the LSO... “Hanslip is a player of the ‘old soul’ category, an artist of exceptional musicianship, with a wisdom and grace beyond her years” It is a great pleasure to welcome Ms Hanslip to our Christchurch stage.

Although written whilst he was living in America, Dvořák’s cello concerto is a deeply personal work that reflects his Slavic heritage. This was the last solo concerto that Dvorak completed and it is characterised by lyrical and reflective melodies with an overriding sense of optimism and triumph.
Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 is the final concerto in a set of works dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. Considered to be amongst some of the finest examples of instrumental writing of the Baroque period, Concerto No. 6 pays homage to the tonal richness of the violas and cellos.
Dvořák dedicated his cello concerto to his friend, fellow Czech, Hanuš Wihan. The piece was written in memory of Dvořák’s sister in law, Josefina Kaunitzová however, whom he had been deeply in love with as a young man.
Russian composer, Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso No.2 brings together two of New Zealand’s most outstanding performers, violinist Mark Menzies and cellist Ashley Brown. Menzies, who is based in the United States, has been described in a Los Angeles review as an ‘extraordinary musician’ and a ‘riveting violinist’. As well as giving many local and international performances in his role as cellist of NZTrio, Ashley Brown keeps a busy schedule of concertos, recitals, chamber concerts, recording and teaching.
Currently one of the most prominent musicians in the Slovak musical scene, cellist, Josef Lupták makes his debut with the CSO to perform this famous composition. Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, Lupták is an award winning recording artist and performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Canada and the USA.
Following in the footsteps of his success with The Firebird, Stravinsky’s next ballet score tells the tale of a puppet, Petrouchka, who is unlucky in love and life. Brilliantly bringing the characters to life through the music you’ll have the feeling that you are actually watching a puppet show on the stage in front of you.
Considered his greatest symphonic masterpiece, Brahms’ fourth symphony was composed over two summer vacations. This was his final symphony and achieves a perfect balance between reflection and exuberance. When first reviewed after its premiere in 1884, a critic wrote “it is like a dark well; the longer we look into it the more brightly the stars shine back”. Josef Luptak appears through the generous assistance of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.

Known as The Resurrection Symphony Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.4 was one of his most popular and successful works during his lifetime.
Attention all francophiles – this concert programme celebrates the musical mastery of some of France’s most acclaimed composers. Credited as the starting point of modern music, Debussy’s Prelude a l’apres midi d’un faune beautifully illustrates an idyllic, woodland scene.
The title has often led to the assumption that Mahler composed this symphony on a religious impulse. But rather than being an expression of Christian faith, the symphony reflects Mahler’s enduring optimism for mankind and his lifelong fascination with the beauty he believed lay within the afterlife. The CSO is delighted to welcome to New Zealand and to our Christchurch stage the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. The orchestras will be joined by critically acclaimed soprano, Amanda Atlas, Freemasons Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artist, Mezzo Soprano, Bianca Andrew and the Christchurch City Choir.
Two works by Ravel complete this impressionist double bill, Pavane pour une infant defunte and his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Internationally acclaimed musicians, Mikhail Voskresensky is one of Russia’s leading pianists and has been the winner of many prestigious international piano competitions including the Van Cliburn. He has been honoured with many accolades including the Merited Artist of Russia and the People’s Artist of Russia Award.
This monumental symphony features orchestral forces on an epic scale with over 100 musicians on the stage. Taking its listeners on a journey of emotion and feeling that concludes with one of the most exultant moments in music, Mahler’s second Symphony is definitely not to be missed.
Influenced by Debussy and Ravel, Olivier Messiaen’s compositions also reflect his lifelong interest in ornithology and Indonesian gamelan. L’Ascension, described by the composer as four meditations for orchestra, testifies to the depth of his Catholic faith and is a reflection of the Christ’s Feast of the Ascension. Originally written for organ the orchestral score is a glorious and jubilant finale to our concert français.

The name of this concert sums up perfectly an evening dedicated to the genius of two of the most influential Russian composers of the romantic era.
Bernd Glemser has won no less than seventeen international music competitions, was the youngest professor to be appointed at a German university and has made over thirty critically acclaimed recordings. It is a great privilege for the CSO to welcome this outstanding pianist as our guest soloist for this concert.
It is also in some ways a ‘homecoming’ for our soloist, Natalia Lomeiko. Born in Russia, Lomeiko has a very strong and close connection to Christchurch and is always a great favourite with CSO audiences. This internationally regarded violinist will be a highlight of the concert performing Tchaikovsky’s masterful showpiece.
Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.2 is a monumental work that places considerable demands on the soloist. An exploration of human struggle and happiness, this concerto found immediate favour with critics and audience alike following its first performance.
Along with Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin was one of the nationalist composers known as the ‘Russian Five’ who sought to create a distinctive school of Russian music.
Bartok’s exuberant Concerto for Orchestra was his last completed orchestral work. This virtuostic tour de force reflects his Hungarian heritage, incorporating folk based melodies and rhythms. In keeping with one of the central themes of the 2014 Lamb and Hayward Masterworks series, the Concerto for Orchestra concludes with a triumphant and optimistic finale.
Composed over a period of 18 years, Borodin’s opera Prince Igor, from which the Overture and Polovtsian Dances are taken, contain whirling melodies and energetic rhythms all brought to life by colourful percussion. Mark Kadin is now in his eighth season as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Krasnoyarsk Symphony Orchestra and has quickly established himself as one of Russia’s most exciting young conductors.

What better way to commence the holiday season than with a concert full of exquisite music and song. New Zealand soprano Madeleine Pierard makes a welcome return to Christchurch to lead us through a beautiful, heartwarming evening of Christmas music and carols.
Their wit, turn of phrase and brilliant lyrics are all accompanied by memorable melodies and their operas enjoy broad and enduring popularity.
Paving a successful international career, Pierard has featured as a Young Artist with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and is an Arts Foundation of New Zealand New Generation Artist.
Performing extracts from classics such as The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore and The Mikado the orchestra enters the ‘topsy-turvy’ world of G&S to present an evening of humour and pathos.

BEETHOVEN & BEYOND FESTIVAL IN ASSOCIATION WITH BECA The Birth of a Romantic PG. 27 From Darkness into Light PG. 29 The Hero PG. 29
BEETHOVEN AND
BEYOND Born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, Ludwig van Beethoven is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest composers. Through his music he featured themes and ideas that continue to be as relevant today as they were in his time, that of mankind’s ability to overcome misfortune and suffering – the hero who conquers against the odds. In this year’s festival we explore the music that Beethoven wrote from 1802 onwards. This period marks not only his maturity as a composer but also his realisation that his deteriorating hearing would ultimately lead to complete deafness. This emotional shock was to have a profound effect on his music. Beethoven is considered one of the great innovators of the musical world. He championed new ways of using rhythm, harmony and musical structures as well as utilising instruments in different ways, particularly within the orchestra. In recognition of his adventurous musical spirit, we are pleased to include in the festival some of the new sounds from around the world.

SYMPHONY NO. 4 IN B-FLAT MAJOR, OP.60
Date SATURDAY 17TH MAY, 7.30PM Venue CHARLES LUNEY AUDITORIUM
Beethoven’s third piano concerto marks his departure from the classical traditions of his predecessors Mozart and Haydn. Embracing the ideals of the new movement established by the Romanticists, this work signals the start of his fascination for representing triumph and heroism within his music. Chinese – American pianist Jian Liu will be making his debut with the CSO, having recently been appointed Lecturer in Piano at the New Zealand School of Music. Liu is a graduate of the Yale School of Music and has performed extensively with orchestras throughout Europe, Japan, the USA and the Ukraine. Composed in 1806, three years after his third piano concerto, Beethoven’s 4th Symphony demonstrates a charming and cheerful sensibility alive with energetic and propelling rhythms. As one of his shortest symphonies, Schumann regarded it as an example of perfect form, describing it as “a slender Greek maiden between two Nordic giants”. One of New Zealand’s foremost composers, Ross Harris is a four times winner of the APRA Silver Scroll SOUNZ Contemporary Award. Te Moanapouri is composed for strings, cor anglais and harp and has the following dedication from the composer: “In June 2005 my niece Verona sailed from Nelson heading for a romantic holiday in Rarotonga. She travelled with her beloved partner on his yacht. They ran into a severe storm north of New Zealand and were never found.”

Considered one of the masterpieces for violin and orchestra, Beethoven’s violin concerto contains moments of serene spaciousness, stunning virtuosity and poetic depth. Returning to perform this work with the CSO is the 2007 Michael Hill Violin Competition winner, Bella Hristova.
Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto was the last concerto he completed. It is dedicated to the Archduke Rudolph, a fervent admirer of Beethoven’s music, a generous benefactor and close friend. It was the only piano concerto not to be performed in public by Beethoven who was finding performing increasingly difficult due to the deterioration of his hearing.
In a Southern Hemisphere premier, Australian Counter Tenor Tobias Cole will perform the Lycanthropy Aria from “The Duchess of Malfi” by German composer Torsten Rasch. In the opera this aria is sung by the Duchess’ brother, Duke Ferdinand, who believes he is a wolf. Powerful and provocative, this work was acclaimed by critics when it was premiered in 2010 by English National Opera.
Premiered in 1811, the concerto quickly gained the nick name “Emperor” in recognition of its grand and noble gestures and stately character. Performing this extraordinary work we are delighted to welcome back pianist Michael Endres. Sampo Haapamäki is one of the new generation of Finnish composers. In 2004 he won the Gaudeamus Prize for his piece Signature, an award considered to be the most prestigious in international composition circles. Characterised by a powerful rhythmic energy, Signature places considerable virtuostic demands upon the performers.
Beethoven’s 7th symphony was premiered in 1813 and found immediate favour with audiences and critics. An orchestral tour de force, the symphony bristles with energy concluding in a final movement full of jubilation, exhilaration and joy of life.
Beethoven’s 8th symphony was completed during the summer of 1812. Perhaps influenced by the season, this symphony is considered the most lighthearted and humorous of all his symphonic compositions. It maintains a delicate balance throughout of grace, richness and exuberance.

In this very special one night only concert, singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and voice of rock band System of a Down, Serj Tankian, will take to the stage with the CSO to perform the extraordinary Orca and Elect the Dead Symphonies. Orca, Tankian’s first true symphony, mixes influences from early 20th century composers with modern film compositional dynamics. Listeners will be met with a mingling of sounds and intertwining pieces that are both serene and bombastic at the same time, offering a fresh interpretation to the classical art. According to Tankian, “Orca is known as the Killer Whale, but is really a dark dolphin, a symbolism for human dichotomy”. All four acts of Orca will be performed alongside many songs from the critically acclaimed Elect The Dead Symphony. Off the back of his hugely successful European tour, Serj Tankian fans are in for a unique treat as this concert is his only New Zealand performance.
“Orca turned out to be sublime, opulent, ostentatious, kitschy minimalist and compelling piece of music. Spaghetti Western sounds eerily met Jaws-string arrangements.”

OUTREACH AND
EDUCATION Our award winning Outreach and Education programme actively engages 20,000 people of all ages participating in 75 different projects. This includes:
to orchestral music, form relationships with them and develop their leadership potential. In addition Ambassadors select concerts they wish to promote within their school. They are able to invite fellow students to attend rehearsals as well as take part in exclusive behind the scenes tours and workshops for different aspects of the business such as production, sound and lighting.
• Interactive performances and workshops at Christchurch primary and pre schools • Sectional rehearsals for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO), the Christchurch Youth Orchestra (CYO) and local high school orchestras • Composition workshops for high school music students • Performances at rest homes and hospitals
“Thank you so much for being able to come to our school and perform. A real highlight of the term. The art experience was enjoyed by the group of children who worked with the artist.
• The Secondary Schools Orchestra Festival • Masterclasses presented by visiting soloists • CSO in Residence
Many thanks, and we hope that some of our children might be inspired to listen to the CSO or maybe join in the future.” Neil Baker, principal Northcote School
“It would be widely agreed by staff and students that this week has been incredible. Our understanding of music and how it works has increased dramatically. We feel that this has greatly increased our passion and awareness for music. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves; the concert was amazing! It was a privilege for St Paul’s students and staff to have the CSO come, and we look forward to more incredible music from them and us in the future.”
MUSICAL CONNECTIONS Our regional touring programme involves ensembles from the orchestra visiting kindergartens, primary, intermediate and high schools. They also present recitals in hospitals and rest homes as well as taking workshops and sectionals for local music groups including brass bands, jazz bands and orchestras. In addition to this our musicians also provide masterclasses and individual lessons. These week long tours usually culminate in a community concert featuring CSO musicians performing alongside local groups and musicians.
St Paul’s students: Louise Daly and Rachel Nilsson
CSO IN RESIDENCE Through our residency programme we work intensively within a school, introducing music to the students and assisting them to create, develop and perform their own work in a public concert within their community. Each programme is designed specifically for the school to meet their individual needs and expectations. During the year this programme will take place in Christchurch and Southland.
“What did I think of the masterclass? It was wonderful! I really appreciated the way Diana presented her criticism; with her right next to me and showing me exactly what I needed to do (I’m much more of a visual learner than anything else). Of course the prospect of having to play to her and the audience scared me, but her relaxed manner made it much easier to perform thereafter...”
AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME Ten top young students from nine Christchurch high schools, selected by their Heads of Music, can attend CSO concerts for free. They will also receive a lesson from a principal player in the orchestra on their chosen instrument and have the opportunity to meet soloists and conductors. The aim is to expose young people

CSO
CSO ON THE ROAD SPONSOR
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is taking to the road as part of our 2014 concert season and we’re looking forward to performing in Ashburton and Timaru.
AMI has a proud and collaborative history with the CSO, a partnership that has helped create many memorable moments for our community. For more than 18 years, AMI have been privileged to be a part of the orchestra’s journey as they’ve worked hard to bring an interesting and varied programme of music to Christchurch. We’re proud that our support has enabled the CSO to evolve and become a leader in the Christchurch Art’s Community.
ON THE ROAD
AMI INSURANCE
CSO on the Road is generously supported by AMI Insurance who through many years of support have encouraged the orchestra’s aspirations in ensuring that there are as many opportunities as possible for our communities to experience live orchestral music.
Great music has the ability to bring communities together, to transform you. Being able to enjoy live orchestral music is something we hope everyone has the opportunity to experience. But often having access to a live performance is not always feasible. It’s been a long shared ambition of both AMI and the CSO to take the orchestra to other areas of the South Island and give communities outside of Christchurch the opportunity to experience live orchestral music.
IN 2014 THE CSO WILL BE PERFORMING: THE GOLDEN AGE OF BROADWAY Friday 11th April, Theatre Royal, Timaru CSO KIDS Thursday 17th July, Theatre Royal, Timaru CSO KIDS Saturday 19th July, Ashburton Event Centre
AMI are proud to support CSO on the Road 2014. By helping the CSO take their tour on the road, we’re helping the CSO further establish themselves as the orchestra of the South Island.

Chairs start at $2,000 per year, and supporters remain closely connected with the orchestra through a variety of events and opportunities such as open rehearsals, pre and post-concert functions, and regular updates on what is happening with the orchestra.
MUSIC LIBRARY Each year the CSO have a ‘wish-list’ of music we hope to purchase to continue to grow our library. At the beginning of the season we publish a list of the works we need to purchase for performances throughout the year. This is a very special contribution you can make that goes on giving throughout the life of the orchestra.
