(POSSIBLY 1880) CHINESE EXPORT PLATE, BEARING THE ARMS FOR THE WATERHOUSE FAMILY A Canton Rose Famille central scene of figures in a courtyard taking tea, with turquoise and orange border of boats in a river panorama possibly Guangzhou. Plate bears crest of Waterhouse family and motto ‘Veritas Vincit Omnia’ (Truth conquers all things). Note: There is an illustration (page 787, Howard, David, Howards Armorial Porcelain) of a similar plate previously offered at Sotheby's, which is dated circa 1805. These arms were borne by the family of Waterhouse and Halifax in Yorkshire, largely descended from Sir Gilbert Waterhouse, of Kirton in Lincolnshire, living in Henry III's reign. However some members of the Waterhouse family were among the early migrant to America, George being there c.1672 and Benjamin, co-founder of the Harvard Medical School, 1754 to 1846. Dia. 46cm. Provenance: From a Japanese collection in its original wood dowelled protective box. A search of the internet reveals only one other very similar charger, in the collection of Rodney Shirley. Other map of Japan chargers of slightly different design do exist, for example Nancy Schiffer shows two on the front flyleaf and pages 50–51 of her publication Japanese Porcelain 1800–1950. FRENCH SAMSON-STYLE COPY OF A CHINESE LIDDED GINGER JAR Decorated in famille rose flowering shrubs within underglazed blue and gilded spearhead bands, encompassing two lion and wolf pseudo-armorials. This style of decoration is often found on French copies bearing the mark of Edme Samson's studio, which continued at various addresses from the 1830s until its closure in 1969. His copies were in turn copied by other decorators, either freelancing or moonlighting. The absence of a mark and the manner of decoration of the armorial, suggest this may have been made by an apprentice at Samson's studio. Good condition, minor wear only. H. 25cm. The following five lots have come from the Teutenberg family. They were in the possession of Frederick Teutenberg (1831–1896). The following is related through the family as there are scant records of his life. Frederick was an engraver, taxidermist and a mercenary. He fought in Persia, for a dare pulled the veil of a Muslim lady down and nearly got lynched for his trouble. He also fought in Mexico and the Mosquito coast. He came to New Zealand in 1862 with Von Tempsky, but whether he fought with the Forrest Rangers is unknown. After this very little is known of him. A small entry in the Auckland Star dated 7 Feb 1896 lists he was a designer for his sister’s needlework. MAORI M11 A VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT
PRE-EUROPEAN TARANAKI WAKA PROW Probably made during Captain Cook’s New Zealand voyages c.1760-1790. The most important and historical Taonga treasure that Dunbar Sloane has ever been offered to auction. Named ‘Te Tauihu Waka’’ and carved in the Te Ati Awa carving style from the hapu of Wi Hapi Pakau. This prow was exhibited at and on loan to, the Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa for the exhibition ‘Mana Whenua’

(Feb 1998–Feb 2003). However the prow was actually lodged with Te Papa on 10th Feb 1960 to 2003, then extended until 2013. Provenance: The vendor’s great-greatgrandparents were born sometime during the years of 1775-1790. When they secured the waka prow it could have already been 40-50 years old, so accordingly we can speculate its age to be around 1750s onwards. L. 1.32m, H. 45cm. Y number pending. FIORDLAND (THE LOST TRIBE) 18TH C. STONE ARTEFACTS Found in the late 1920s around Lake Te Anau and the upper reaches of the Waiau river. These areas were known to have been used by the local Ngati Mamoe tribe (renowned as the ‘Lost Tribe of Fiordland’). During the 18th Century they were engaged in a war with Ngai Tahu led by Te Hau, and eventually defeated in a battle at Dock Bay across the lake from the Te Anau township. They fled to the Murchison Mountains, Dusky Bay, Lake Friendless, and then dispersed throughout the Fiordland region.

M79 THE RARE ‘MUNGO PARK’ TRUNK,
In bullock hide with brass studs The famous explorer Mungo Park was born in 1771 in Foulshiels-Selkirk, Scotland. He was a Scottish explorer of the African continent, a qualified surgeon and the first Westerner known to have travelled to the Niger River. In 1795 he was appointed by the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior of Parts of Africa wanting proof of the course of the river Niger and to look for the fabled city of Timbuktu. He was accompanied by 30 soldiers and an exslave called Johnson. Park reached the river Niger in 1796, then returned to England presumably with the Trunk.
