the Anton Teutenberg collection A selection of items from the Teutenberg family Anton Teutenberg has been described as New Zealand’s master engraver, born in 1840 in Germany. His talent was immediately recognised and his first commission was carving the stone gargoyles on the supreme court building. He also made and exhibited award winning walking sticks in 1885. Four years later he decorated a casket made by Anton Seuffert which was presented to Bishop Selwyn. He went on to adorn a number of Seuffert desks and other furniture, as well as continuing with carvings for various buildings. From his Wellesley Street premises, Anton also created seals and medals for all manner of interests. It has been noted that his skill compares more than favourably with machine and computer design medals of today. He eventually retired to a small farm in Mt Roskill where he died in 1933. These items appear on page 62 and are to be sold without reserve.

NZ Historical 585 A Magnificent Anton Seuffert Parquetry Floral Pattern Card Table This table represents one of the more complex and free flowing of the Seuffert 'standard patterns', the Fern & Clematis design, similar to a table presented to Countess Aberdeen in 1887. This top is likely to comprise 5,824 pieces of timber, each one laid with such precision that the pattern flows effortlessly. The practice of inlaying marquetry into detailed parquetry background patterns is an endearing feature of this top. It is extremely difficult process for a marquetarian craftsman, and the interwined nature of the design makes it incredibly challenging to execute accurately.
Original label underneath. Dia. 60cm. H. 73cm. In our opinion this table is the best example offered to date. This table has not been sold by us before. Illustrated in Bryan Peet's The Seuffert Legacy, p. 116. Provenance: Ruth Simon Estate, Sydney. Est. $35,000–50,000
The sectional repeat patterns are perfectly matched at intersection points and the New Zealand iconography incorporated in the design displays the Seuffert's' skill set at their very best. The table has the original Seuffert and Teutenberg base.

NZ HISTORICAL 633 Further Unpublished Manuscripts of Various Accounts Written by Private John P Ward Who Served in thirty one engagements of battle in the New Zealand wars. Amongst the hand written papers is a 63 page narrative of the various skirmishes involved in the campaign against Titokowaru ‘after our big licking at Okotuku’, the whole country from the Kai-Iwi stream some 15 miles from the town of Wanganui, right up to the Wanganui River some 70 miles from that town had been abandoned by our forces and given up to Tetoko who had beaten us badly at every point of this vast area of the country’. Also many descriptive passages of the various engagements ‘The Dago’s came out of the bush and were chopping us down with tomahawks! I had four rifles smashed in my hand that morning by the rebel fire, with only some 60 of us left as a rear guard to oppose some 300 Dagos it was a bit tough, the Dago’s all around us and only sheer grit got us out of it – all our officers were knocked over and I was placed in charge of the left wing of our division by Capt. Roberts.’
Also mentioned is the engagement at Ruatahuna with Col St Johns column, mentions of early Wanganui Settlers Churton, Hubbard etc. Another 10 page article entitled ‘How Dr Brown saved the occasion’, describes the Chief Surgeon of the field force attending to the sick after the Ngatapa engagement and before the battle at Tauranga-ika against Fitokowaru. ‘Like a flash the foul men seized an arm and leg of the patient, whilst the doctor beckoned me to hold his head. The patient (Sullivan) was not thoroughly pinioned. Dr Brown now took hold of the almost red hot sand iron by an extempore “holder” made a couple of old Forage Caps, and with two rapid strokes up and down the strip of brown paper spread over Sullivan’s buttock and thigh almost made the flesh sizzle and with one terrific yell, and gathering a sort of super human strength in his intense pain, bounded up from the table, scattering the four orderlies and myself and making a vicious left hand blow at the doctor, who dodged it and in doing so upset the can of live coals, thereby nearly setting fire to the hospital marquee!!’
Various other manuscripts describe a despatch run from their camp at Cambridge. A 26 page manuscript entailing other engagements under Capt. James MacIntosh Roberts, 1867, mentions of general chute, Von Tempsky, the Taranaki field force etc. Another 29 page hand written group entitled ’a pretty tough ordeal’ describes the Forest Rangers breaking camp at Te Aramoho and crossing the river and marching with a lot of other troops to Wereroa via St Johns bush and Westmere ‘I watched them the rangers as they passed the Rutland Stockade.’ Also included is ‘The fight at Dutahi’ along with 2 sepia photographs entitled in pencil to verso ‘Mokau Inlet, Waikaremoana’ and ‘head of Wairau Moana’. Plus correspondence from an Auckland assay office regarding samples of quartz which Ward hoped was to be gold bearing. Est. $3,000–4,000 634 no lot

buyers guide If you have not bought from Dunbar Sloane before, please read the following notes. They are set out in the order you are likely to come across them in the process of buying at auction. Staff will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. BEFORE THE AUCTION CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS The terms and conditions under which the buyer acts at a sale are detailed at the back of this catalogue. We recommend that you read and understand these conditions of business before registering to bid at an auction. This sale is subject to the conditions of business printed in this catalogue and to the reserves. Viewing All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision to bid is at your discretion and liability. Pre-Sale Estimates The estimated prices printed below the catalogue descriptions are in New Zealand dollars and are the approximate prices expected to be realised, excluding buyers premium. They are not definitive, they are prepared well in advance of the sale and they are subject to revision. Condition reports Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd will provide a verbal condition report if you would like an opinion on any particular lot prior to purchasing. All goods are sold ‘as is’ and it is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to the condition of an item before the auction. THE AUCTION Registration To bid at the auction you will need to register for a bidding number at the front desk either during the viewing or prior to the auction. Buying at the Auction Please bid clearly and promptly using your bidding number. When you successfully purchase a lot the auctioneer will ask you for your number, and this will show on your invoice. Approximate Selling Rate Auctions are generally conducted at the rate of about 100 lots per hour. However, this can vary. Absentee Bidding If you are unable to attend the auction, Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd can bid on your behalf according to your written instructions. This is a free service for intended buyers. Please complete clearly the form at the back of this catalogue and submit it to Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd at least 24 hours before the sale to ensure it is safely received. Lots will be purchased for you as cheaply as possible, subject to other bids in the room and to reserves. Telephone Bidding If you are unable to attend the auction, you can elect to bid by telephone (subject to availability). Telephone bidding must be arranged with Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd at least 24 hours prior to the sale and is strictly subject to a minimum lot estimate of $1000 or greater. Please note that the auctioneer determines the increments in bidding, not the telephone bidder. 80

If you want Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd to pack and pay for couriers we charge accordingly. This is to be paid before the goods leave our premises. We pack with care, however we take no responsibility for damage once your goods leave our premises. It is up to the buyer to arrange insurance to cover any damage or loss in transit. 3. New Zealand Post Office If you require us to send your items by post we will charge for packing, postage and incidentals. The goods need to be paid for immediately following the auction and we will then quote you for this service. We have to take your items to NZ Post by car, stand in queues and fill in a custom declaration. This all takes considerable time for which we charge NZ $50 over & above packing & freight.
