the collection of a european gentleman Collecting may not always be present in one's DNA (although in my case it may well be, as all my family have been avid collectors for generations), but once smitten by the particular emotion that comes from the acquisition of a new object of one's desire, it almost feels as though it's 'in the blood'. Having accompanied my father for many years as he bid at auction or negotiated with a dealer for some object d'art, I learnt to appreciate many of the finer aspects of collecting. Auction house experts and knowledgeable dealers became friends and were always available to give advice. Frequent visits to museums as I was growing up brought further enlightenment. My fascination with the variety and beauty of Oriental artifacts started with these times spent with my father and, over a period of years, my admiration of the skill and ability of Asian artisans to work in a variety of mediums has grown immensely. This collection has been assembled to reflect that admiration. A portion of the collection has already been auctioned by Christie's in New York (September 2011) and in Hong Kong (November 2011), and again by Christie's in London (November 2013). A further part of that collection is now being offered for sale by Dunbar Sloane. It is my hope that these things of beauty may bring the same joy to their new owners as they have brought to me and my family.

Viewing All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision to bid is at your discretion and liability. THE AUCTION Registration To bid at the auction you will need to register for a bidding number at the front desk either during the viewing or prior to the auction. Buying at the Auction Please bid clearly and promptly using your bidding number. When you successfully purchase a lot the auctioneer will ask you for your number, and this will show on your invoice. Approximate Selling Rate Auctions are generally conducted at the rate of about 100 lots per hour. However, this can vary. Absentee Bidding If you are unable to attend the auction, Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd can bid on your behalf according to your written instructions. This is a free service for intended buyers. Please complete clearly the form at the back of this catalogue and submit it to Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd at least 24 hours before the sale to ensure it is safely received. Lots will be purchased for you as cheaply as possible, subject to other bids in the room. National & International Packaging and Transportation We prefer the buyer to pack and arrange transport. Removal firms can make crates, wrap your goods and have them delivered to you. 1. It is best to arrange your own freight insurance. It is cheaper with your household insurance company. 3. Couriers do not pack and require payment before they pick up the goods. If you want Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd to pack and pay for couriers we charge accordingly. This is to be paid before the goods leave our premises. We pack with care, however we take no responsibility for damage once your goods leave our premises. It is up to the buyer to arrange insurance to cover any damage or loss in transit. 4. New Zealand Post Office If you require us to send your items by post we will charge for packing, postage and incidentals. The goods need to be paid for immediately following the auction and we will then quote you for this service. We have to take your items to NZ Post by car, stand in queues and fill in a custom declaration. This all takes considerable time for which we charge NZ $50 over & above packing & freight.
