DUNBAR SLOANE WELLINGTON
Pacific Monarch or Papaioea as it is otherwise known, translates to ‘there are beauties here’, has a complexity of meaning to match the hybrid nature of New Zealand culture. The crown of leaves…alludes to ceremonial head-dresses of some Pacific cultures as well as to the green men of Celtic mythology. The blindfold represents the ignorance of many settlers to the true nature of the New Zealand environment when they immigrated. The plum-bob signifies the European intent to settle permanently…The globe and barnacles on the stern-like thighs symbolise the long voyage and transportation of cultural values and ideas from the Old World to the New World. Paul Dibble (Bateman, 2001) p. 71.

It is of 14 recent paintings by Auckland artist Don Binney, eight on the theme of “A tree, of many, one” and six in a series on “A single field”…Cleared land on Puketotara is the subject for “A single field paintings”. One of the most beautiful of the paintings is “Puketotara once bittern” ($580), the study of a standing bird, graceful neck extended, merging in outline and colour into the lines of the landscape.” - But there’s a Tree, of many one, A single Field which I have looked upon, Both of them speak of something that is gone: The Pansy at my feet Doth the same tale repeat: Whither is fled the visionary gleam? 32 Sir M T [Toss] Woollaston (1910-98) Bayly’s Hill oil on board signed ‘Woollaston’ (lower right) 89.5 x 120cm together with an ink sketch, 27 x 36cm by the same hand, which was the original drawing for the larger oil (see illustration below) $50,000 - 60,000 PROVENANCE originally purchased for 80 guinea directly from the artist. Woollaston was a close friend of the original owner, who was present when the artist painted the commission by descent to the present owner Private collection, North Island
Towards the end of his trip abroad [Europe, 1961], Woollaston became impatient to begin painting again. But now he had a new locale in mind – the environs of his boyhood in the Taranaki backblocks which had originally fired his romantic imagination… While the Bayly’s Hill Paintings retain occasional baroque flourishes, recalling the West Coast landscapes, Woollaston tended to curb his rhythms as he sought greater monumentality in his motif. In many of the works the hill crowds the picture plane almost oppressively, assuming an emblematic quality reminiscent of Cezanne’s paintings of Mont-Sainte-Victorie. Born in Surrey, England,1822, he and his wife Sarah emigrated to New Zealand aboard the Pilgrim in 1849. Formally trained as a chemist he continued this profession upon his arrival in Wellington, establishing a business on Lambton Quay. He remained in this profession until 1887, when his premises accidentally burnt down, forcing him to retire. However art remained his passion. After his arrival in New Zealand he travelled widely in his spare time over a large area of both the North and South Islands, sketching in the various provinces, and recording his impressions of New Zealand, distinctively includes local figures amongst many of his works. Many of these sketches he later produced into large scale art works, painting predominantly in watercolour. The climax of this activity came when in 1877 he published New Zealand, Graphic and Descriptive, his publishers being Samson, Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, the lithographer being C. F. Kell, while the descriptive material was edited by W. T. L. Travers. The book contained 24 full-page colour lithographs of landscapes and numerous other plain lithographs and woodcuts dealing with aspects of native life in New Zealand.

On leaving school in 1904, Laurence S Lowry began work in Manchester as a clerk, studying painting and drawing in the evenings at the Municipal College of Art (1905–15), and at Salford School of Art (1915–25). In 1910 he became a rent collector with the Pall Mall Property Company in Manchester, where he remained a full-time employee and eventually chief cashier until his retirement in 1952. Despite his unusually long period as an art student, he regarded himself as self-taught. He drew inspiration from his surroundings, particularly Pendlebury, near Manchester, where he lived from 1909 to 1948. Lowry's reputation was slow to be established; it was not until 1962 that he was elected an RA. Despite this Lowry remained unconcerned by his growing fame and commercial success. Dinner Time illustrates not only Lowry’s love of the industrial landscape, but also his role as an observer of all that working class life comprised. His work has a unique engagement with street life and he develops of a cast of characters, which portray the way in which his subjects’ lives unfold and become unstuck, highlighting the unpredictability and unsteadiness of working-class life. Without his pictures, Britain would arguably lack an account in paint of the experiences of the 20th-century working class. To quote the artist "I saw the industrial scene and I was affected by it. I tried to paint it all the time. I tried to paint the industrial scene as best I could. It wasn't easy. Well, a camera could have done the scene straight off." Dinner Time depicts the rebuilding of Rylands Library, Manchester. It arguably rates as one of Lowry’s most accomplished pre-war pencil drawings. The artist believed drawings were as technically challenging as paintings. Here we see his typical working of the surface by smudging, erasing and rubbing in order to build the atmosphere of the drawing. A similar drawing of the same scene entitled ‘Rebuilding Rylands Library, Manchester, 1929’ sold for 54,000 pounds ($116,412 NZD), 20th Century British Art, 18 November 2009 (lot 39). This work has never been previously offered at auction, and was originally purchased from Lefevre Gallery, London 1958 by the present owner’s husband. It has remained in their collection until present.
