At over six foot tall with an intricate facial moko, executed at Pupuwai by the famous tattooist Huitara, Atama presented a striking figure. He became one of Goldie’s favourite subjects in the 1930s, painting seven portraits working from photographs after his death. Over the course of time Goldie submitted several portraits of Atama to the Royal Academy in London and the Paris Salon. ‘An Aristocrat’ Atama Paparangi, A Chieftain of the Rarawa Tribe of Maoris, 1933 was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London in 1934 (no. 591). This work formerly in the collection of Charles Bathhurst, 1st Viscount Bledisloe (1867-1958), former Governor General of New Zealand, was sold recently at Christie’s London, September 2013 (lot 6) for £313,875. 31 Peter McIntyre (1910-95) Maori Family, East Cape oil on board signed 'PETER MCINTYRE' (lower right) 85 x 69cm $25,000 - 35,000 PROVENANCE Estate Collection, Auckland LITERATURE Peter McIntyre's New Zealand (Auckland 1964) plate 14 (colour illustration) 'I was prowling along a beach all strewn with sea-worn logs and pondering that sculpture had come in a wide circle almost back to this point, for only a touch more gouging would have dotted the beach with Henry Moore's, when I saw them - a Maori family in a splash of colour among the bleached wood, silhouetted against a green sea. They had their flax baskets, gathering who knows what? Big-eyed and half wild children and a splendid woman who posed for me with dignity. These Maoris of the Cape, less touched by city life than elsewhere, have retained their pride and stature of their forebears who landed here at Cape Runaway. They made peace with the Pakeha after the Hau-Hau trouble in the Maori Wars; that peace remains unbroken and that friendliness remains all around the Cape. When we stopped at the first roadside store the old Maoris sitting around the doorstep gave us a friendly laughing greeting.’ Peter McIntyre

32 Colin McCahon (1919-87) Urewera no. 4 sawdust, synthetic polymer paint on hardboard signed and dated 'McCahon Feb. '69.' (lower right); signed and inscribed 'Colin McCahon / URUWERA [sic] / Feb '69 / 4 to reverse 27.9 x 29.6cm $45,000 - 55,000 PROVENANCE with Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington c1969 purchased from the above by the present owner Private Collection, Wellington REFERENCE Colin McCahon Online Catalogue, record no cm001210

Urewera no. 4 was inspired by a memorable trip through the Urewera mountains in 1968, as detailed in an impassioned letter to Anna Caselberg after the event: ‘Anne & I have been down to a weekend school in Napier – we came back through the Urewera country in pouring rain, wipers packed up, at least fifty slips, large and small on the road – no tops showing – dark bush & flowing red mud, drifting clouds held between trees – and a freat lot of luck not to silde sideways over the edge and down four or five hundred feet into foaming yellow ochre rivers and lakes. Coromandel is a land for beginners, this for those who have learned how to cry. However the Maori people survived, got through, lived in these places is more than I can imagine. Always wet, mostly cold – the sky not open but existing only between mountain tops. It must not be looked at romantically but as hard and as objectively (and as long) as possible and eventually as a symbol. After our crossing I’m both scared to return but I think I must. There is a bluff over Waikaremoana – and some steep almost vertical mountain sides with perpendicular bush that must eventually be analised [sic]…’ The trip, in part, re-stimulated McCahon’s interest in Maori themes for the first time since 1965 and bore several Urewera paintings in 1969 and the Urewera Mural of 1975. This infamous mural was commissioned by the Urewera National Park Board for the recently completed Waikaremoana Visitor Centre at Aniwaniwa. It rose to notoriety when stolen in a highly publicized political theft in 1997, immortalizing it as one of New Zealand’s most significant public art works. The year 1969 was to be among the most productive of McCahon’s career, by December producing his largest of written paintings since 1959 Elias period.
