WORKS FROM the ESTATE OF john & margaret oakley The following lots 18 to 27 and lots 298 to 308 (Part Two/Day Sale) are from the estate of Late Margaret and John Oakley. The works were collected during their 59 years of marriage and displayed in their Lower Hutt home of 53 years. The personalities, experiences, goals and visions of John and Margaret are behind this collection. They combined forces, energies, determination and commitment to create prosperity and something lasting in their legacies both for family and the community and to inspire others to use all their talents. Hard working and self-made, John Oakley [J.H.O. as he was fondly called] had a deep love of all the classical traditions and sport; and was a tenacious Barrister and Senior Partner in Wellington and Lower Hutt Law firms since 1947. He was a generous benefactor to promising individuals, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, the Wellington Amateur Opera Society; and Co-Creator of the NZ Cricket Foundation and the National Cricket Museum. He was awarded a CBE for services to Cricket. He strongly believed one should never be confined in life or told it can not be done, so he pushed all the boundaries in his endeavours and became very commercially astute in investments, including art. Combined with John’s drive, intellect and single minded focus was Margaret’s great aesthetic and creative talents, as evidenced in their magnificent home and garden transformation over the years. Their shared appreciation of the beauty of nature and the diversity of cultures from their international travels is displayed in their proclivities and choices of art. They had a deep loyalty to and presence in Lower Hutt and Wellington, including extensive involvement with their three children’s sporting and educational pursuits and their love of New Zealand life in the cities, the country and the sea from their own personal younger lives and family holidays, all of which is very evident in their art choices of local history and NZ artists and scenery. 24 John Barr Clarke Hoyte (1835-1913) Sydney Harbour, c1879-1882 watercolour signed 'J. C. Hoyte' (lower right) 38 x 65cm $30,000 - 40,000 PROVENANCE Estate of Margaret & John Oakley, Lower Hutt This watercolour is painted from the North side of Mosman looking across Sydney Harbour to the Botanical Gardens & Sydney City. The work also illustrates The Garden Palace, a large, purposebuilt exhibition building constructed to house the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. It was designed by James Barnet and constructed by John Young. A reworking of London's Crystal Palace, the plan for the Garden Palace was similar to that of a large cathedral, having a long hall with lower aisle on either side, like a nave, and a transept of similar form, each terminating in towers and meeting beneath a central dome. The Garden Palace was sited at what is today the south western end of the Royal Botanic Gardens (although at the time it was built it occupied land that was outside the Gardens). It was constructed primarily from timber, which ensured its complete destruction when engulfed by fire in the early morning of September 22, 1882. The only extant remains of the Garden Palace are its carved Sydney sandstone gateposts and wrought iron gates, located on the Macquarie Street entrance to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Â

He gave Isabel lessons, took her with him on sketching excursions and introduced her to the local Art Club. Isabel began exhibiting at a young age, and by the age of 20 had firmly established her reputation in the local Otago arts community. In 1893 married Wellington solicitor and later parliamentarian Will Field. Her artistic output dwindled as such, although from time to time she would resume painting, often with great success and the support of her sister.

LITERATURE Contemporary Maori Art, Waikato Art Museum Catalogue p. 17. (colour illustration) This is a New Zealand landscape based on the earth and sky theme, where man and nature are one. The three crosses reflect the importance of religion to the New Zealander. The man lightly shadowed reaching beyond the earth reaches to give life to the universe as well as to increase his knowledge and status. The young Maori children are spiritually bound to the earth and grown out of the landscape. Darcy Nicholas Â

70 Eric Lee-Johnson (1908–93) The Kindling watercolour and indian ink signed and dated 'Lee Johnson 50-51’ (lower right) 46 x 56cm $5,000 - 8,000 ILLUSTRATED/REFERENCE M K Joseph, 'Five Pictures from the Annual Exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts', Arts Year Book 7, Wellington 1951, p.64-65 Edward Simpson, Art Review, Design Review, Volume 4, Issue 5 (October-November 1952) p. 120. EXHIBITED Annual Exhibition, 1951, Auckland Society of Arts “Eric Lee-Johnson is a modern romantic; and it is characteristic of him that…unity of mood appears to control unity of structure. The picture space is treated as a single indivisible whole, and is completely filled with fine and nervous calligraphy, almost like a well-written nineteenth century letter. From passage to passage, this writing changes into a variety of manners. At least three main variations can be distinguished… The drawing knows its own mind. It is the colours that give much of the romantic suggestiveness and lack of definition. They blur and blend, each appropriate to its place. The dark stuff of the girl's dress, the muted greens and whites of the old woman, have a proper natural warmth, different in kind from the glowing oxidised red of the house. When looked at directly, individual colours are sometimes startlingly vivid, as in the electric blue on the underside of the fallen stump, or the lichenous whites on the trees to the left. In the end the colour, like the calligraphy, unifies and gives emotional tone, the sense of warm and living colours faded together into the uniform texture of old things - worn cloth, dead leaves, wind -bitten deadwood, and unpainted weatherboards.” M K Joseph, Arts Year Book 7 (1951), p. 64-5.
