Born in the village of Liku, Niue, John Pule moved to New Zealand with his family in 1964 at the age of two. It was not until 1987 that be began painting, encouraged by his close friend Tony Fomison. Pule first visited Niue in 1991 and has since returned numerous times. This visit triggered a strong interest in the history and mythology of Niue and gave him the opportunity to connect with the traditional Niuean art of hiapo which continues to inform his work. Culture, mythology, history, politics and identity are key influences in his work. He combines images of people, religious iconography and modern technology, with patterns inspired by customary Pacific art practices. His work has focused on the impact of Christianity in the South Pacific, as well as migration, bilingualism, love and personal relationships. Ka Fai Mahaaho is typical of his utilisation of monochromatic sepia tones on a large scale., strongly echoing the art of Hiapo. As well as an internationally recognised painter and print maker, Pule is a published author with three published novels and is an accomplished poet. He co-wrote Hiapo: Past and Present in Niuean barkcloth, a study of a traditional Niuean artform, with Australian writer and anthropologist Nicholas Thomas (2005). His artwork and writing alike are extensions of a project to record his family history into an Aotearoa and Pacific context, combining elements of poetry, prose, drawing, printmaking and painting to maintain his routes/roots to the Pacific. Pule received an Arts Foundation Laureate Award in 2004 and in 2012 he was awarded an ONZM (Officer of the said Order) for services as an author, poet and painter in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.. The Wellington City Gallery staged a major survey show in 2010: John Pule: Hauaga (Arrivals) which subsequently toured throughout New Zealand.

23 Colin McCahon (1919-87) Titirangi oil on board signed and dated ‘McCahon Dec/ ‘56’ (upper left) 53 x 75cm $100,000 - 120,000 PROVENANCE Private Estate, Auckland EXHIBITED possibly Recent Paintings by Colin McCahon, Dunedin Public Library, Dunedin April 1958 REFERENCE Colin McCahon database cm000148 Colin McCahon moved from Christchurch to Auckland in 1953, living in a tiny house in French Bay, Titirangi. Among the first images to excite his imagination in this new landscape was that of the kauri tree. In various guises the kauri appeared as a major motif until The Last Titirangi Landscape was painted in October 1959. The kauri tree provided McCahon with an ideal serial motif in two groups of paintings and drawings that continued over a five year period – Titirangi and Kauri. In many ways the two series are interchangeable and are not distinctive enough to be defined as two separate series. Titirangi marks an important stage in McCahon’s development. The works explore a more orderly, broader and complex quality of imagery akin to that of Analytical Cubism. The Titirangi paintings consist of square or diamond-shaped fragments as well as utilising diagonals and verticals in the broader structure of the picture. They mark a purposeful attempt to rid his vision of any preconceptions. His concerns are primarily aesthetic and perceptual rather than existential and philosophical as they were in both earlier and later works.

Auckland Art Gallery Conservation Report (2015) available on request This work is very similar in composition to Ena te Papatahi - A Ngapuhi Chieftainess, 1911, illustrated Alister Taylor & Jan Glen, Goldie Catalogue Raisonne p. 219 and exhibited Canterbury Society of Arts Exhibition 1911. Ina (ena) te Papatahi was a Ngapuhi chieftainess for the Hokianga who was a niece of two noted chiefs, Tamati Waaka Nene and Patuone. She moved to Auckland in 1866 after she was widowed., living at Orakei village, where she became a familiar figure in the local community until her death circa 1910. Ina was one of Goldie’s favourite sitters, first painting her in 1902. She appears in over 18 portraits between 1902 and 1937, taking an active interest in all of her portraits. She is thought to be the model for Joan, in one of Goldie’s largest and iconic works, Darby and Joan [1903] previously gifted to Lady Ranfurly and now housed in the national collection after considerable controversy in 1990.

The light source in Catharine, Sleeping highlights angular aspects of her creating a constructed a minimal, geometric composition through the contrasting diagonal composition, the strong vertical of the wall triangular format reinforced by the shape of the pillow. Sydney has again balanced against the insistent horizontals of the bed, mattress and body, interrupted by the zig-zagging shadows on the model’s body. Recalling Whistler’s tonal forays, this work is a study in grey, underlining the subdued atmosphere and the sense of sobriety of the sleeping figure.’ Belinda Jones, The Silent Studio, The Art of Grahame Sydney, pp. 138-9

With no formal artist training, Barraud displayed a natural aptitude for drawing from a young age. Born in Surrey, England,1822, he and his wife Sarah emigrated to New Zealand aboard the Pilgrim in 1849. Formally trained as a chemist he continued this profession upon his arrival in Wellington, establishing a business on Lambton Quay. He remained in this profession until 1887, when his premises accidentally burnt down, forcing him to retire. However art remained his passion. After his arrival in New Zealand he travelled widely in his spare time over a large area of both the North and South Islands, sketching in the various provinces, and recording his impressions of New Zealand, distinctively includes local figures amongst many of his works. Many of these sketches he later produced into large scale art works, painting predominantly in watercolour. The climax of this activity came when in 1877 he published New Zealand, Graphic and Descriptive, his publishers being Samson, Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, the lithographer being C. F. Kell, while the descriptive material was edited by W. T. L. Travers. The book contained 24 full-page colour lithographs of landscapes and numerous other plain lithographs and woodcuts dealing with aspects of native life in New Zealand.
