About the Author My name is Brandon Hernandez, I am currently a Junior at Bravo as of writing this. I like to do many things in my free time but one of the most important things which I do revolve around music. I enjoy many aspects of music, I like to play it, listen to it, and even go watch it live at concerts. Music is a big aspect of my life which has had a huge influence in my life.

The first time I began to write actual essays/longer pieces of writing was in middle school. In 7th grade, when I started to write one of my first essays, the teacher who helped me to begin writing was called Mrs.Delmuro. At first I wasn't the best at writing, as English isn't one of my strengths, but after some practice and a few writing assignments I began to improve both in fluidity and vocabulary. I then went on to 8th grade where my teacher, Mr.Yabuki, helped me to continue to improve and develop my writing skills. That same year in 8th grade I also had to do a lot of writing assignments in my history class but again my teacher, Mrs.Santos, helped me to write correctly and now in a different type of setting, as opposed to my English classes where I had previously been writing. Entering high school was another step in my writing journey. I had Ms.Diaz freshman year and we had to read books to do reports on, this helped me to apply both my writing and reading skills at the same time. I also learned how to make my writing more vibrant and not dull, to keep my reader engaged. My sophomore year I had Ms.Amerhein who would have us do writing assignments based on non-fiction texts we would do, making us make different connections between writings and the texts we read. I also had to write in my AP World class about different topics we would read about and how they would relate to certain questions that were presented. I hope to continue to improve and work on my writing skills this year in this English class.

Introduction This book has many writing elements such as words, sentences, paragraphs, etc. Each section focuses on a certain aspect of the six different writing elements that exist. Phrases/Clauses is an element of writing which consists of a group of words that come together to form a coherent piece of writing which may stand on its own. Sentences are a group of Phrases/Clauses which can stand on its own and help to piece together different phrases and clauses into a single unit. Music utilizes many different Phrases/Clauses and Sentences in both expressing it and writing it. Music which contains lyrics uses many elements of writing in the process of creating it, helping to form a pleasing sound to the listener. Without these different elements of writing Music would not be able to be as great as it sometimes can be. All these different words, phrases, sentences, come together to form the basis of much of the music that is listened to in this day.

PHRASES AND CLASUES

Phrases – groups of words that function as a part of speech. Noun Phrase: A group of words consisting of nouns or pronouns and their modifiers that function as a noun. The band of the Black Keys consists of Dan Auerbauch and Patrick Carney.

Verb Phrase: A group of words consisting of verbs working together and that function as a verb. The Black Keys had been playing at venues all around the US when they released their album “Let’s Rock”, of which I went to go see them play at one.

Prepositional Phrase: A group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun, and functions as an adjective or an adverb. My brother and I saw the Black Keys play at the Forum where we had ended up getting front row seats for free.

Appositive Phrase: A group of words that include all the words that modify an appositive and function as an adjective - IT MUST BE SURROUNDED BY COMMAS. Dan Auerbauch, the lead guitarist, has helped to create some of my favorite songs by The Black Keys such as “The Only One”, “Too Afraid To Love You”, and “In Our Prime”.

Verbal Phrases: A group of words that begin with a verbal and ends with a noun. Gerund Phrase verb ending in -ing that functions as a noun. Patrick Carney helps to give some more rhythm to The Black Keys songs by playing the drums, which really adds to the songs.

Participial Phrase word ending in -ing (present participle) or -ed (past participle) that functions as an adjective. The fans left after the Black Keys had finished playing at the Forum.

Infinitive Phrase verb preceded by the word “to” (to read, to study, to write) that function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. Among the bands I listen to, I like to listen to the Black Keys almost daily.

CLAUSES Clauses – groups of words with BOTH a subject and a verb that function as parts of speech. There are TWO kinds: Independent and Dependent (called “Subordinate”)

INDEPENDENT – CAN stand alone as a complete sentence, known as a simple sentence pattern. The Black Keys is an American rock band which originated in the state of Ohio. DEPENDENT (SUBORDINATE) – CANNOT stand alone as a complete sentence and MUST begin with a SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTION. There are seven (7) kinds:

Noun Clause: Used as the noun in a sentence and may function as a subject, a predicate noun, a direct object, an object of a preposition, an indirect object, or an appositive. Whoever listens to the Black Keys has good music taste in my opinion.

Adjective Clause: Used to modify a noun in an independent clause. Some adjective clauses begin with an introductory word: The Forum is where bands usually perform, I have gone to the Forum around 3 times to see different live shows.

Adverb Clause: Used to modify verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in an independent clause, introduced by a subordinate conjunction and used to indicate time, place, cause, purpose, result, condition, and/or concession. Modifying verbs: After the Black Keys had finished performing at the Forum, they came back to play a few more songs which everyone went crazy for.

Modifying adjectives: The Black Keys have been together longer than I have been alive, since 1996.

Modifying adverbs: The Black Keys have worked hard to become a successful band.

Relative Clauses: Dependent clause that begins with a relative pronoun. People who buy the 10th anniversary edition of “El Camino” will receive many unique things.

Elliptical Clauses: Adverb clauses in which part of the clause is omitted. When on stage, the Black Keys make an excellent live performance.

Essential Clauses: Clauses necessary to the meaning of the sentence. The Black Keys toured with Arctic Monkeys during 2013.

Nonessential Clauses: Clauses that are NOT necessary to the meaning of the sentence. Little Black Submarines, one of the first songs I had listened to by the Black Keys, is a really good song.

When they got their name for the band, Matt Shultz had been approached by a man who kept repeating “You have to cage the elephant” which prompted them to adopt Cage the Elephant as their name. When they got their name for the band, Matt Shultz had been approached by a man who kept repeating “You have to cage the elephant” which prompted them to adopt Cage the Elephant as their name, since then they have kept the name.

Loose Sentence: A sentence that contains an independent clause plus a subordinate construction (either a clause or phrase) with your main point at the beginning. Cage the Elephant is a rock band that formed in Bowling Green Kentucky in 2006, after their song “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” they found much success as a band. Cage the Elephant is a rock band and The Black Keys are a rock band. Chiasmus: A sentence that includes a repetition of ideas (words, phrases, or clauses) in inverted (reversed) order - this sentence requires symmetry. Cage the Elephant’s unique style is amplified by Matt Shultz and without Matt Shultz their style would be a bit less appealing. Asyndeton: A sentence that leaves out conjunctions between words, phrases, or clauses for a rhetorical purpose. Some of my favorite Cage the Elephant songs are “Cold Cold Cold”, “Black Madonna”, “Aberdeen”, “Social Cues”, “Ready To Let Go”.

Anaphora: A sentence that features the purposeful repetition of a word, words, or a phrase at the beginning of several successive clauses in order to place emphasis and draw attention. Sentence Errors Run-On/Rambling/Fused Sentence – a sentence construction error where two or more independent clauses are connected incorrectly without punctuation. Cage the Elephant released Melophobia as their third studio album they had given the album that name as somewhat of a joke as Melophobia means fear or music. Comma Splice – a sentence construction error where two or more independent clauses are connected incorrectly using commas Cage the Elephant’s fourth studio album “Tell Me I’m Pretty” was an experimental album for them, they worked alongside Black Keys guitarist and vocalist, Dan Auerbach, to create the album. [Wrong] When they released their fourth album, it was time I started to listen to Cage the Elephant. [Right] Misplaced/Dangling Modifiers – modifiers are words, phrases, or clauses that add description; a misplaced modifier describes the wrong part of a sentence and a dangling modifier is missing the part it’s supposed to modify After playing the live concert, Unpeeled was released as a second live album. [Wrong] After playing the live concert, Cage the Elephant released Unpeeled as their second live album. [Right]

Double Negative – combining two or more negative words in a sentence in a way that is supposed to produce a positive force I know I wouldn’t have not been satisfied if I had heard about Cage the Elephant later so I'm glad I heard them when I did. I know I wouldn’t have not been satisfied if I had heard about Cage the Elephant later so I'm glad I heard them when I did.

PARAGRAPHS Paragraphs – a group of sentences that together convey a shared purpose structured around the same topic. Introductory Paragraphs (Introductions) Hook (Lead / Opening Statement) – can begin with the title Anecdotal (Brief story to set the mood and lead the reader into the topic) The Strokes is a rock band from New York founded by Julian Casablancas, Albert Hammond Jr., Nick Valensi, Nikolai Fraiture, and Farbizzio Moretti. They became a hit rock sensation with their first album “Is This It” which earned them much success starting off as a band . Over the years they released 6 more studio albums with the latest one being titled “The New Abnormal” to an even greater degree of success, earning them a grammy for their 7th studio album.

Query Based (Question that brings the reader to the topic - avoid second person POV “you”) person’s health? Do The Strokes deserve all this commercial success they have had as a band? Thesis Statements (the purpose of a piece of writing – usually one sentence in length, but can be longer depending on the purpose – must be something that is arguable)

Assertion (claim - a subject + a “so what” about the subject) The Strokes are one of the best rock bands and everyone should listen to them. Fact (empirically verifiable but often difficult to argue extensively about - better used as evidence to support a claim) The Strokes are widely recognized.

Opinion (personal position on a topic) The Strokes are the best rock band.

Belief (social, religious, or political in nature – an opinion held by many to be a fact, though it is not necessarily factual – often involves a judgement) Not listening to The Strokes should almost be considered morally wrong.

Generalization (uses absolute or statistical pronouns: all, always, every, never, none, most, half – avoid using this type of thesis statement unless citing the source of the data) Everyone should listen to the Strokes.

Document Based (cites a specific source, author, and position on a topic) In Star Treatment, Alex Turner states that The Strokes had a major influence on him and how even he thinks that The Strokes are really an awesome band.

Theory (a statement that can be tested and potentially proven - often answers a research question) Arctic Monkeys wouldn’t have been the same rock band without The Strokes influence . Clarification/Expansion of Thesis (could extend the thesis, preview the evidence supporting the thesis, give the purpose of thesis, establish the importance or significance of examining the intricacies of the thesis – this could be several sentences long) The Strokes have had great success having many hit songs, influencing many artists, and also continuing to sell out in many live shows, showing how The Strokes are one of the best bands out there.

Examining the Evidence Paraphrasing (rewording of a quote into other words of the same length without quotation marks, but still citing the source - useful for examining the quote and transitioning to your analysis of the quote) Original Quote- “I just wanted to be one of The Strokes” (Star Treatment, Arctic Monkeys). Alex Turner wanted to be one of The Strokes. Summarizing (condensing larger quotes or sections - useful for closing the examination of the quote/evidence and transitioning to your analysis of the quote) Original Quote- “I just wanted to be one of The Strokes” (Star Treatment, Arctic Monkeys). Alex Turner is a fan of The Strokes.

Abstract Examples (hypothetical, “what if” examples that do not refer to a source – AVOID USING THEM AS EVIDENCE – but useful for examining the quote) The rock scene might have been different if The Strokes hadn't emerged.

Concrete Examples (actual examples that do refer to a source – useful for enhancing your analysis of the quote) In the song Star Treatment from Arctic Monkeys 6th studio album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, released in 2018, Alex Turner references how The Strokes are one of his idols that influenced him.

Closing Sentences (must end the discussion of the topic within the paragraph with a transitional or culminating word – possibly an adverb – and should echo the thesis of the essay) Clearly, The Strokes had a major impact on the rock scene, influencing other hit bands such as Arctic Monkeys.

Closing Paragraphs Consequences of Disregarding the Thesis (establishing the potential consequences of disregarding the implications of the thesis – CREATING A COUNTERARGUMENT – could be one or more sentences) Although there are many great rock bands that have made major impacts and had large success in the world, The Strokes still remain one of the best bands out there and not listening to them is a disservice to someone’s self.

Statement(s) of Extension (extending the consequences of disregarding the implications of the thesis – could be one or more sentences) As such, The Strokes deserve their recognition and their popularity which they have gained throughout the years.

Reestablishing the Significance of the Thesis (could be one or more sentences) Thus, The Strokes are one of the best bands out there, they had a major impact on the rock scene, maybe even influenced a band you listen to, as well as major success in their career.

Final Sentence (closing statement that connects to the hook and finishes the essay (finish your argument) – the “Smoky the Bear”/”Drop the mic”/dot dot dot moment…) So given all these different reasons, who wouldn’t want to try to consider The Strokes as one of the best rock bands out there...
