BRAZIL: a biojet fuel superpower?

Brazil is already a huge supplier of ethanol for ground transportation thanks to its status as the world’s largest sugarcane grower. But can Brazil, the Saudi Arabia of sugarcane, become a biojet fuel superpower? The answer may turn in part on a new study being funded by Boeing, Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, the Inter-American Bank and Amyris, a California biofuel company with operations in Brazil. Boeing and its collaborators want to see if sugarcane-based aviation fuel refined with Amyris’s technology can be sustainably produced.

“Emerging renewable jet fuel technologies have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, as sugarcane ethanol in Brazil has already proven,” Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, head of the InterAmerican Development Bank’s Sustainable Aviation Biofuels Initiative, said in a statement. “This study will examine the overall potential for sustainable, largescale production of alternative jet fuels made from sugarcane.”

Aviation industry looks to Brazil for green jet fuel Researchers will conduct a lifecycle analysis of the carbon emissions related to producing Amyris’s aviation biofuel. Among the factors to be considered are impacts on land use. “We want to make sure as we ramp up production, we’re actually going to meet demand and that requires production of actual feedstock,” Joel Velasco, Amyris’s senior vice president for external relations, said in an interview last week. “Let’s make sure we’ve independently checked the sustainability of aviation biofuel and whether Brazil can handle its production. We feel pretty confident about it as Brazil has shown over and over again that it can handle increases in production,” added Velasco, who noted Brazil produces a third of the world’s sugar supply. The study follows international regulators’ approval in July of an aviation biofuel made using a different refining process. In June, I flew to Paris from Morristown, N.J.; aboard the first transatlantic flight powered by biofuel, in this case Honeywell UOP’s Green Jet Fuel, made from the seeds of the inedible camelina plant. Close on the Gulfstream G450’s contrails was a Boeing 747-8 freighter, also powered by the Green Jet Fuel, which flew from Seattle to Paris. The global airline industry is under increasing pressure to cut its greenhouse gas

emissions. In January, the European Union will impose emissions limits on flights and Australia has proposed levying a carbon tax on domestic flights. Although U.S. airlines are fighting the European emission limits, they also have embraced biofuels as a way to reduce their carbon spew while gaining a hedge against volatile petroleum prices. Jet fuel made from sugarcane, however, will need separate regulatory approval and production is some years off. “It’s not a short-term opportunity and we’ve targeted a 2015 time frame,” said Velasco. Amyris’s genetically engineered yeast ingests sugar cane and excretes a hydrocarbonbased biofuel. That fuel can then be refined into jet fuel. But the thin profit margins of sugarcanebased ethanol for ground transportation and the current sky-high prices for raw sugar have led Amyris and competitors to focus for the time being on producing renewable chemicals used to make cosmetics, lubricants and other products. Whether producing sugarcane-based jet fuel will prove a profitable enough opportunity for Amyris and other companies remains to be seen. The Brazilian study is set to be completed in early 2012. Around that time, Amyris and Embraer plan to conduct test flights powered by Amyris’s renewable jet fuel, according to Velasco.

Brazil's defense Pele at 10 Downing for football initiative minister quits

Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim resigned after criticizing the government to reporters and will be replaced by ex-foreign minister Celso Amorim, the president's office said last Thursday. Jobim, 65, took the job in 2007 under then-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and oversaw a still-pending multi-billion tender for 36 new fighter jets. He stepped down after making derogatory remarks about two female senior government officials. "Jobim presented his resignation to President (Dilma) Rousseff on last Thursday night at the president's office and she accepted. The new minister is Celso Amorim," Communications Minister Helena Chagas told reporters. Amorim, 69, was foreign minister during Lula's eight years in office and a key player in the former president's foreign policy successes. He is best known for efforts to improve ties among developing nations, tightening relations with Latin American countries, and for helping organize the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Foreign Policy magazine has called Amorim the "world's best foreign minister. Jobim fell from grace after he was quoted as saying that the minister of institutional relations, Ideli Salvatti, lacked power, and that cabinet chief Gleisi Hoffmann "doesn't even know" the capital Brasilia. Earlier last Thursday, Jobim issued a statement denying the quotes –

due to appear in a magazine out for sale Friday -- but a government source said that Rousseff considered his declaration "beyond what is reasonable." The outgoing defense chief also said in an interview a few weeks ago that he voted for arch-rival Jose Serra over Rousseff in the October 2010 election. Over the past year, Brazil has repeatedly delayed making a decision on the jet fighter tender, estimated to be worth between $4-7 billion and pitting the US F/A18 Super Hornet by Boeing against France's Rafale by Dassault and Sweden's Gripen NG by Saab. In February, Jobim announced that Brazil will make no decision in the "short term" on the jet fighter tender due to budget cuts. A member of the centrist Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), Jobim was named in 2007 to put order in the defense ministry. He was justice minister in 19951997 under president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and later joined the Supreme Court, rising to the position of chief justice in 2004. Jobim is the third minister to lose his job since Rousseff became president in January. In June, powerful cabinet chief Antonio Palocci resigned after charges of illicit enrichment, and Transportation Minister Alfredo Nascimento quit over charges of corruption.

Brazil's Fred asks not to play after drinking episode Brazil striker Fred asked Fluminense not to pick him for the club's match against Internacional on last Thursday, claiming psychological problems after being pursued by fans who found him drinking in a Rio bar. Fred, who played for Brazil at last month's Copa America in Argentina, would have been in the starting line-up for the Brazilian championship match. "The athlete asked not to be chosen for tonight's game, against Internacional, at the Engenhao (Olympic stadium). Fred claimed he was not fit psychologically to play because he felt threatened, in view of the episode ... in a southern area restaurant on last Tuesday," Fluminense said in a statement. According to media reports, Fred and team mate Rafael Moura were seen by fans drinking 'caipirinhas', a Brazilian cocktail, in the company of women in the early hours of last Wednesday in a bar in the Rio beach district of Ipanema. After leaving the bar with their companions, Fred and Moura were pursued in their cars by the fans, who felt aggrieved to see the players out drinking before a match, local media said.

It was a case of No 10 at No 10 when Brazil's great Pele turned up at the official residence of the British PM on last Wednesday to help promote a youth football programme. Pele, who wore the No 10 shirt for the bulk of an international career where he was a key member of three Brazil World Cup-winning teams, was at No 10 Downing Street to meet youngsters who are taking part in Street League, a charity which aims to help young people gain qualifications, find jobs and stay away from crime. The 70-year-old Pele was on hand to watch a kickabout in the Downing Street garden and afterwards he told reporters: "I'm proud to be here, it's fantastic. I'm very honoured. In Brazil, we start playing football in the street, so to support the kids here is great. Many kids from the street see the game of football and they turn away from the drugs and from the bad scene, which is very important." Street League's Marco Dejesus, 19, from Tulse Hill, south London, spoke to Pele in the footballer's native Portuguese. "Meeting him was fantastic, a once-in-alifetime opportunity and something I can tell my grandchildren," Dejesus said. "I had a little conversation with him in Portuguese -- both my parents are from Madeira. He gave me a big hug and was happy I spoke the language. He's a huge hero of anyone who plays football. He's the world's greatest." Pele, an ambassador for his former club the New York Cosmos, was in Britain to attend the American side's match with Manchester United at Old Trafford on last Friday to mark Red Devils' midfielder Paul Scholes's testimonial.

Brazil's ready if Colombia, Brazil to boost trade financial crisis worsens: FM

Brazil is well prepared to deal with a possible worsening of the global financial crisis, Finance Minister Guido Mantega said. "In case of escalation of the world crisis, Brazil has never been more prepared to deal with the consequences," said Mantega last Thursday. He added that Brazil not only has more foreign exchange reserves, but also measures introduced during the 2008 financial crisis, such as credit-easing and tax cuts, to minimise the damage, reports said. Mantega expressed concern over the US economy and the eurozone debt crisis and added that more financial turmoil may hit emerging economies. He said the financial crisis will affect Brazil by leading to the fall of stocks and a decrease in trade and credit. The Brazilian government has already ordered a series of tax breaks, and the Central Bank lowered reserve requirements to increase the amount of money in circulation. Brazil's Bovespa stock index fell 5.72 percent last Thursday. Bovespa's indicator has accumulated a fall of 10.2 percent last week and 23.7 percent in 2011.

As the United States and Europe struggle to put their financial houses in order, it's time for South America's thriving economies to bet more heavily on each other, Brazil's Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Sliva said last week. Speaking at the First Forum on Investment in Colombia and Brazil on last Thursday, da Silva said the region had behaved like forlorn lovers for too long “always waiting for rich nations to fulfill our desires and our needs.” But now those rich nations are struggling to stay afloat and the region should bolster bilateral trade and use its foreign reserves on joint infrastructure and energy projects that will benefit the entire continent. The meeting, organized by the InterAmerican Development Bank, comes as the United Nations expects the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean to grow almost 5 percent this year. That puts the region in an enviable position, said IDB President Luís Alberto Moreno. “Together with the Asian tigers and the Indian elephant, our economies – the pumas and jaguars of the Amazon – are the new motors of global economic growth,” he said. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos inaugurated the one-day event saying a weak U.S. economy was hurting the region. Not only are exports suffering but the anemic U.S. dollar is devaluing the region's foreign reserves. “If [Latin America] could coordinate its policies it would multiply our relevance,” he said. Yet regional integration remains a struggle. On paper, Brazil and Colombia look like natural trading partners. They share a 1,211-mile border, have a growing middle class and are the region's two most populous nations, accounting for about 60 percent of South America's population. Yet trade between the powerhouses was only $3.3 billion last year. That represents about 4 percent of all Colombian commerce and less than 1 percent of Brazil's

global trade. Part of the problem is that the nations have been so focused on trading with Europe, Asia and the United States that they have never developed infrastructure along their common border, said IDB President Moreno. But they have also been slow to drop tariffs and engage in creative deal-making. As a result, it costs about as much to ship cargo from Colombia to Brazil as it does to ship it from Canada to Brazil. Despite its economic woes, the United States remains Latin America's largest trading partner. It represents about 34 percent of all of Colombia's commerce, and the two nations hope to solidify the relationship with the ratification of a free-trade agreement later this year. While Colombia is right to pursue the deal, it also needs to think more about how to trade with its healthier neighbors, da Silva said. Speaking to the audience of business executives and political leaders, da Silva said the United States looks more like Latin America of the 1980s — swamped with debt and facing weak consumer demand. He said President Barack Obama needs to take a page out of Brazil's book and invest more in the poor. That would create a new consumer class that would propel a U.S. recovery, he said. The United States, “the country that prided itself on consumerism — on consuming more than it needed — now cannot even consume what it needs,” he said. Santos said Colombia had shaken off its reputation as a violence-plagued nation hostage to drug trafficking. As investments pour into the mining and energy sectors, the nation could see growth of more than 6 percent this year and reduce unemployment, currently at about 11 percent, to under a single digit, he said. “This decade should be and can be the decade for Latin America,” Santos said. “We just have to play our cards right.”

Lollapalooza heads to São Paulo in 2012 Lollapalooza, the giant rock festival celebrating its 20th anniversary with three days of music started on last Friday in Chicago, is set to expand to its second South American event next year in Sao Paulo. "If we can rub elbows with the Brazilians, who knows what Lollapalooza will be like. They have a long, storied history of partying," said Perry Farrell, who founded the festival in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band, Jane's Addiction. Farrell's band broke up after the first Lollapalooza, before reuniting at least three times, while the festival lived on as cross-country U.S. tour until being canceled in 1998. Six years ago, it was reborn as a weekendlong concert at Grant Park in Chicago featuring hundreds of bands, and last year it expanded to Santiago, Chile. The festival will be held next year March 31 to April 1 at O'Higgins Park in Santiago and then April 7-8 at the Jockey Club in Sao Paulo before the summertime concert moves back to the northern hemisphere August 3-5, 2012 in Chicago. Ninety thousand fans attended each day of the festival last weekend in the Windy City, where Coldplay, Eminem and the Foo Fighters, the group fronted former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, headlined the event. "Lollapalooza is a pilgrimage to music itself that these young people come to see groups that they might not have heard of, or that they've heard and are in love with," Farrell said from his office backstage at the park in Chicago. Farrell said he has no interest in returning Lollapalooza to its roots as a touring festival that stops at amphitheaters across the United States. He is committed to hosting the event in Chicago until 2018. "The festival cannot be in screwed-in, fixed-in seats -- that's not a festival," he said. "The idea of playing in an amphitheater will not fly."

São Paulo backs 'heterosexual pride'

The city council of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has passed a measure calling for an annual Heterosexual Pride Day to be celebrated each December. Sao Paulo Gay Pride is the largest gay festival in the world and city alderman Carlos Apolinario, who authored the legislation, told journalists that his idea for a Heterosexual Pride Day is “not anti-gay but a protest against the privileges the gay community enjoys”. The city's mayor, Gilberto Kassab, has not yet signed the law. His spokesperson said he was considering the measure. Mr Apolinaro has a long record of opposing LGBT rights. He has claimed that he is not homophobic, but is concerned that the Brazilian LGBT community is being offered special legal protections beyond what he considers appropriate for all Brazilian citizens. As the debate over LGBT rights continues to rage in Brazil, the alderman recently complained that gay rights were being far more prominence than black rights. He said: “The law must be equal for everyone, but we have seen for a while now is a deification of the gays, because the newspapers almost every day brings some matter on them, the government is concerned to discuss the matter up in schools, with children and adolescents, distributing booklets and videos. “The impression is that the most important issue in the press, the courts, in Congress is the issue of so-called gay rights, the rights plan is treated with almost a dozen rights for gays. Not blacks, who are part of our history, have the same space in the media. The government also does not show any concern to combat racism in schools telling the story of blacks and their importance to our country. In addition, we have many kinds of prejudice to be fought. What's more, those who claim to defend gay rights, privileges actually argue as if the gay was a special category of people who are above the law. The alderman has complained that the city's massive Gay Pride Parade is staged on one of Sao Paulo's main thoroughfares, Avenida Paulista, while the annual 'March For Jesus,' organised by evangelical groups, has routinely been denied permits and permission to use the same route. He told reporters: “I respect gays and I am against any kind of aggression made against them. I have no trouble coexisting with gays as long as their behaviour is normal. I respect the gay and lesbian, because as a Christian, I learned the meaning and value of free will, but I disagree with the exclusivity that the government gives the gay community. These situations [Gay Pride] make homosexuals a special category of people. The way things are going, soon someone will present a project in Sao Paulo turning it into the gay capital of the country.” The Brazilian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Association criticised the legislation, saying it could provoke homophobic violence. In a statement, it said: “How many LGBTs will be attacked because of the message that only heterosexuality makes someone a moral person and a good citizen? “The celebration of heterosexual pride is inappropriate because it belittles the just cause of the LGBT community,” the statement added. “Unlike homosexuals, heterosexuals are not discriminated against simply for being heterosexuals.” In a recent report, the gay rights group Grupo Gay da Bahia said 260 gays were murdered last year in Brazil, up 113 per cent from five years earlier.

Brazil announces scholarship program Brazil has announced it will invest $2.02 billion by the end of 2014 in 75,000 science and technology scholarships that will send students abroad. The commitment is part of the government's Science Without Borders program announced July 26, an article in Nature reported. Brazil is one of the world's 10 largest economies and has a need for chemists, physicists, computer scientists and engineers, said Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, director of the Sao Paulo state research foundation. "This will have a major impact in allowing Brazilian kids to take their ideas to the limit," he said. There aren't enough students studying science and engineering to fill current demand, Aloizio Mercadante, the Brazilian minister of science and technology, said. The scholarship program is intended to address the shortage by focusing on engineering, health sciences, life sciences and technology, he said. The idea is to send students to top universities, mostly in the United States and United Kingdom. There are 238 foreign universities participating in the scholarship program, Mercadante said.

Riot, fires break out in North London after protest

Police were in a tense standoff with rampaging rioters who burned three patrol cars, set a bus and shops ablaze and looted stores in the gritty north London neighborhood of Tottenham. The incidents began Saturday night after an initially peaceful protest over the Thursday fatal shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old father of four who was killed after an apparent exchange of fire with police. The protesting crowd swelled to more than 300 outside a police station on High Road and violence erupted. A member of Parliament appealed for calm, but officers on horseback and others in riot gear clashed with hundreds of rioters armed with makeshift missiles. A post office, supermarket, job center and carpet store were among the fire losses, according to reports. A double-decker bus was set ablaze early in the rioting. Widespread looting was also reported Sunday morning in the nearby Wood Green district of north London. Firefighters initially could not reach a blazing Tottenham shop blocked by the disorder. A woman who lives above the shop told British TV she was trapped with her baby by the blaze and mayhem. Several buildings were later seen on fire and police tried to clear paths for firefighters. Stores in the area were looted and people were seen pushing carts full of stolen goods. Some of the rioters were said to look as young as 7 to 10 years old. They were fleeing with looted TVs and stereos, media reported. Hundreds of residents gathered to watch the unrest and there several were reports of attacks on bystanders. Rioters were seen beating up a man attempting to film the scene. Windows were smashed at a Barclays Bank and pictures on Twitter appeared to show the building being looted, an official reported. Youths stormed a McDonald's and cooked their own burgers and fries, according to some accounts. On the north side of Tottenham High Road one rioter, who told a news channel his name was "Jamal," said, "These are our ends, we're here to tell the police they can't abuse us, harass us. We won't put up with it, this is just the beginning, this is war, and this is what you get — fire.” "Jamal" was one of a group of young men smashing up bricks a few yards away from a line of some 150 riot squad officers, Channel reported. Hails of bottles and bricks were intermittently thrown at police from side streets as reinforcements arrived, four firework rockets were shot at a line of police horses, prompting a charge and a nearby crowd to disperse in panic. The BBC reported that its TV news crew and satellite truck also came under attack from youths throwing missiles after youths began attacking a third patrol car. Sky News also

said it was forced to withdraw camera crews from the area as the situation became increasingly volatile early Sunday. A resident, David Akinsanya, 46, said several shop windows had been smashed. “It's really bad," he said. "There are two police cars on fire. I'm feeling unsafe." He added: "There was a police line of about 15 riot police sort of in front of the police station on the north side and then there were loads of uniformed officers on the south side of the police station. "They weren't making any effort to go into the crowd. Every now and again they would rush the crowd and the crowd would run. "But there seems to be a lot of anger in Tottenham tonight... as I left they were starting to attack the police station. One person at the scene, who gave his name as Tim, said: "It's an absolute war zone. I walked up there. I saw about five youths, all faces covered up. They set a wheelie bin on fire and threw it into the riot police." Duggan had been shot in an exchange of fire after the police's Trident operational command unit, which deals with gun crime in the black community, stopped the minicab he was traveling in. A police officer was said to have escaped injury in the shoot out when a bullet lodged in his radio. Parliament member David Lammy said on his website: "We already have one grieving family in our community and further violence will not heal that pain," Sky News reported. "True justice can only follow a thorough investigation of the facts. "The Tottenham community and Mark Duggan's family and friends need to understand what happened on Thursday evening when Mark lost his life. To understand those facts, we must have calm." The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the shooting of Duggan, the BBC reported. A spokesman for London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "Violence and destruction of property will do nothing to facilitate [the IPCC] investigation and we urge those involved to respect the rule of law.” Miles from the tourist hotspots of central London, Tottenham is one of the most deprived areas in all of England, with nearly half of all children living in poverty, according to campaigners. The area is very diverse and home to one of the capital's biggest black populations. The area also has a history of racial tension and anti-police feeling. In 1985 Tottenham was the scene of a deadly riot after a local woman suffered heart failure when her home was raided by the police. The Tottenham riots were among the most violent in the country's history with police constable Keith Blakelock killed by attackers wielding knives and machetes as he tried to protect firefighters and nearly 60 others hospitalized.

Police add computer probe to hacking inquiry London police probing phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch's defunct NoTW tabloid are broadening their investigation to allegations of computer hacking, they said. A new investigative team will be set up to tackle the new allegations, reporting to Sue Akers, the officer in charge of the phone hacking probe, the Metropolitan Police Service said. "Operation Tuleta is currently considering a number of allegations regarding breach of privacy, received by the MPS since January 2011, which fall outside the remit of (phone-hacking) Operation Weeting, including computer hacking," London police force said. "Some aspects of this operation will move forward to a formal investigation." Police reopened their investigation into phone hacking in January, shortly after the PM's communications chief, Andy Coulson, resigned because of allegations of phone hacking at the NoTW while he was its editor.

Britain celebrates second royal wedding Britain celebrated the marriage of another member of the royal family last Saturday, though in a decidedly more private fashion. Queen Elizabeth's eldest granddaughter, equestrian star Zara Phillips, married rugby player Mike Tindall at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland. Their nuptials follows the late April media-frenzied wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton, which was televised worldwide. William and Catherine, now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were among the wedding guests Saturday, as was Queen Elizabeth. Hundreds of royal watchers, many waving Britain's Union Jack flag, lined Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile, where the wedding church is located. They cheered as the guests arrived. Arriving last, the bride gave them a wave before she disappeared into the church. The reception was being held at the nearby Holyrood Palace, the official Scotland residence of the queen.

New Harry Potter release makes $1bn

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has passed the $1bn (£609m) mark at the worldwide box office, distributor Warner Bros has said. The final instalment in the eight-part boy wizard series is the first to reach the milestone. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone had the previous best global takings with $974.8m (£593m) in 2001. The 2009 epic Avatar holds the current record for the biggest worldwide box office haul with $2.8bn (£1.7m). Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is expected to pass Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides soon, which is this year's top grossing movie so far at $1.03bn (£626m). The Harry Potter film took $21.9m (£13.3m) at the North American box office over the weekend, climbing to a domestic total of $318.5m (£194m). It has now topped the franchise's previous best in the US and Canada of $317.6m (£193.6m) for Philosopher's Stone. But taking into account today's higher admission prices, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has not yet caught up to Philosopher's Stone in terms of actual tickets sold.

Winehouse back on top of British charts

Fans of soul star Amy Winehouse on last Sunday sent her back to the top of Britain's album chart, a week after the 27-yearold was found dead at her London home. Grammy Award-winning album "Back to Black", which first hit the top spot in 2007, dislodged fellow soul diva Adele's 21 from the summit while Winehouse's debut release, "Frank", also recharted at number five. The singer also occupied five spots on the singles chart top 40 with Back to Black placing at eight while a box set of Frank and Back to Black entered the album chart at number 10. The five-time Grammy winner was found dead at her north London home. The cause of her death has yet to be established, although it is not being viewed as suspicious. Friends and family attended Winehouse's Jewish funeral at Edgwarebury Cemetery in northwest London on last Tuesday, where her father delivered a eulogy which ended with the words: "Goodnight, my angel." The singer fought a well-publicised struggle with drugs and alcohol, famously singing about her refusal to seek treatment in her biggest-selling single "Rehab". But she had to scrap a European comeback tour after stumbling through the opening performance in Belgrade on June 18.

Labour urges PM to UK calls for more "come clean" in pressure on Syria hacking row Labour challenged Prime Minister David Cameron on last Sunday to "come clean" over his links with the Murdoch media empire, reviving pressure on the government over phone hacking. In letters to Cameron and senior ministers, Labour asks dozens of questions about the premier's decision to hire Andy Coulson, a former editor at the now defunct News of the World, and about Rupert Murdoch's takeover bid for BSkyB. Coulson quit as Cameron's media chief in January and was arrested this month for alleged phone hacking and police bribery, which he denies. Cameron defended his appointment, but admitted that with hindsight, he would not have hired him. The government has also come under fire for its meetings with Murdoch and his executives while the media tycoon's News Corp was bidding to take over payTV giant BSkyB. It abandoned the offer this month. The pressure on Cameron has eased a bit, but as lawmakers begin their summer recess, Labour -- which has been at the forefront of the charge against Murdoch -- is stepping it up again. Labour lawmakers have written to Cameron, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and others demanding "they come clean", a party spokesman said. "David Cameron and George Osborne treated warnings about Andy Coulson with contempt and failed to put a proper distance between themselves and senior News Corp executives during the consideration of the BSkyB bid," said Ivan Lewis, Labour's Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary. He said there were "serious doubts" about their judgment, saying they had behaved in "a cavalier and reckless way. A tangled web of their own making will not go away until they and their cabinet colleagues give full and frank answers to legitimate questions," he said. Earlier this month, Cameron and his ministers published a list of their meetings with senior media figures dating back to the election in May 2010, and they have promised to do this regularly from now on. "I think we have been pretty clear, we are taking action," a Downing Street spokeswoman said. However, Labour wants details of what was discussed with News Corp executives about BSkyB, and on how Coulson was hired, including whether it was on the advice of News Corp executives or whether anyone raised any concerns.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague called last Monday for "stronger international pressure" on Syria following a deadly crackdown on protesters, but ruled out military intervention. "We want to see stronger international pressure all round, and of course to be effective that can't just be pressure from Western nations," Hague told BBC radio after Syrian security forces killed nearly 140 people on last Sunday. "That includes Arab nations, it includes Turkey that has been very active in trying to persuade President (Bashar al) Assad to reform instead of embarking on these appalling actions." Britain, along with France, Germany, Portugal and the United States, have been pushing for weeks for some kind of UN Security Council condemnation of the violence in Syria. "We do want to see additional sanctions, and we have agreed a further round of sanctions at the European Union which will be announced in detail later this week," Hague said. He added: "I would also like to see a United Nations Security Council Resolution to condemn this violence, to call for the release of political prisoners, to call for legitimate grievances to be responded to." However, he admitted that divisions in the council made this "quite difficult", adding the situation was "very frustrating". Hague stressed there was no prospect of achieving a UN mandate for military intervention such as in Libya. "It's not a remote possibility, even if we were in favour of that, which we're not," he said. "There is no prospect of a legal, morally sanctioned military intervention. And therefore we have to concentrate on other ways of influencing the Assad regime and of trying to help the situation in Syria," he said. "It is a very frustrating situation. The levers that we have in this situation are relatively limited but we should be frank in admitting that and working with the ones that we have." Activists said Syrian security forces killed at least 100 people when the army stormed the flashpoint protest city of Hama on last Sunday, and dozens were killed in other cities.

20-yr-old dies after 12 hours of gaming

A 20-year-old man in Britain has died after playing video games for 12 hours, a report said. An autopsy has revealed that Chris Staniforth, who never had any serious health problems before, actually died from a blood clot which formed as a result of marathon gaming sessions. According to a British tabloid, Chris, who played on his Xbox for up to 12 hours in one go, died from the blood clot caused by deep vein thrombosis. "Chris lived for his Xbox. When he got into a game he could play it for hours and hours on end, sometimes 12 hours at a stretch. He got sucked in playing Halo online against people from all over the world." "I'm not for one minute blaming the manufacturer of Xbox. It isn't their fault that people use them for so long. But I want to highlight the dangers that can arise," his father, David, was quoted as saying. In a statement, Microsoft, who manufacture the Xbox console, said, "We have always encouraged responsible game play through our education campaigns. We recommend that gamers take periodic breaks to exercise and do other things."

Hello beloved readers, Here I am, bringing the best celebrity stories for you. This week's section tells you about RiRi's body fitness regime. Also, fashion icon Coco Chanel's secrets are revealed in a new biography, Lindsay is finally moving on and having a laugh at herself and much more on Showbiz. Enjoy and keep sending me your love and suggestions at carla@brazilianpost.co.uk

Fred Perry puts How Winehouse's Rihanna gets that bangin' body. future collections Take note! on hold If you were hoping to get your hands on Amy Winehouse's collection for Fred Perry, you might be out of luck. Amy told Harper's Bazaar in October that they had completed at least three more collections, but according to the label they're "on hold until we speak with Amy's family and management". And we cannot wait for Amy´s last collection! Meanwhile, Amy Winehouse is back on the top of the charts. However, the reason for it is so sad. Eight days after her passing, her album Back to Black climbed back to the top of almost every chart out there, and that includes the UK charts too — and her first album was able to reach #5 again.

As the new face of Emporio Armani, Rihanna is prepping her body so that she's ready to grace billboards across the world. Her personal trainer Ary Nunez talks about RiRi getting in shape, saying: "Rihanna trains like a ninja! She trains for life. We work hard, but we also have fun doing it. Rihanna is great at push-ups, squats, lunges, planks and Pilates. She loves to dance, so dancing is definitely in her fitness practice. She wants to be strong, confident, able, and flexible and, she wants to feel like the star that she is!" Specifically, Ary does "inversion training." She explains: "She loves them. Her curves are natural, so I enhance them with high repetitions and using her own body weight. We workout until we drop! Every session is different, but the latest thing we are doing is called 'inversion training.' This puts gravity to work for you by placing your body in line with the downward force of gravity, So we do exercises hanging upside down!" As for Rihanna's diet, Ary details what she eats: "It's important to eat well and to eat like a Ferrari, not a Ford. Rihanna loves chicken, olives, hard-boiled eggs, almonds, fruit, water, and coconut water! Just anything that is really, really healthy." Rihanna works hard for that physique! If you wanna get a body like hers, you have to really, really work at it!!

Kings of Leon cancel US tour! Apparently, there was some drama going on with Kings of Leon and their Texan concerts. After complaining of heat exhaustion, frontman Caleb Followill walked off stage and never came back. His brother, Jared Followill, apologized to the fans, admitting it wasn't just the heat getting to the band. In some interesting tweets, he aired their dirty laundry. Then we learned the rest of the shows in Texas would be cancelled. But now ALL of the shows are being cancelled. Well, at least in America. In a statement, their rep extended the band's apologies: “We are so sorry to say Kings of Leon are canceling their entire US tour due to Caleb Followill suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion. The band is devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break. Unfortunately, the US dates cannot be rescheduled due to the band's international tour schedule.” The band will resume touring in Canada on September 28th. But until then, we're left wondering. How big is this 'internal problem' his brother speaks of?

LINDSAY LOHAN makes fun of herself Lindsay Lohan finally has a sense of humor about her whole stolen necklace caper. And she even let a puppet crack a joke at her expense, right to her face. HA! As reported, Lindsay shot a comedy sketch called "On the SkyCouch with Rico" for Air New Zealand. In the sketch, which was shot inside Lindsay's Venice condo while she was under house arrest, the puppet gives Lindsay a necklace, but then assures her that "It is all paid for!" Genius!

Get Gwyneth's flawless skin for $200! We already knew that Gwyneth Paltrow has expensive taste when it comes to fashion and apparently the same goes for her skin care regimen. To fight the aging process, the GOOP-y 38 year old uses a $185 "wonder gadget" called the Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion."[It] focuses on fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes by infusing the skin with anti-aging serum", Gwynie said. Think that's all she does??? No way!

Brangelina to make fewer films She's said this before…We know! As she finishes up post-production on her directorial debut and prepares for her upcoming role in Cleopatra, Angelina Jolie says that she and Brad Pitt plan to take on fewer films. "As Brad and I get older we're going to do fewer films. I've been working for a long time, he's been working for a long time, we've had a nice run and don't want to be doing this our whole lives. There are a lot of other things to do", she explained. With 6 kids, directing, acting, and doing all their charity work, we're impressed at how much Angelina and Brad do already! But we most likely won't have to worry about not seeing two of our favorite A-list stars. Angie has said this before, a couple times actually, and she's always come back for more. But is it this time for real?

KIM KARDASHIAN

Will.I.Am urges reveals wedding students to study dress designer! abroad in China

She's tried to keep the details of her Aug. 20th wedding as private as possible, but Kim Kardashian is letting one big fact slip: Vera Wang is indeed designing her wedding dress. “Vera has been a close family friend for a long time and we had talked about this moment for years,” Kardashian wrote on her blog last Monday. “When it came to picking my wedding dress designer she was the first person I thought of. No one designs gowns the way she does!” The reality starlet visited the designer's New York City boutique in early June, but kept mum on the terms of her visit. Plenty of friends were happy to give their thoughts on her wedding look, though; Project Runway judge Michael Kors suggested keeping it “sleek, sexy and simple,” while publicist friend Jonathan Cheban told PEOPLE she should go for “over the top.” And while Kardashian once swore she couldn't decide on a gown, it's clear her pick was Wang, who also designed little sis Khloé's wedding dress, all along. “I know that Vera can make my dream come true,” Kardashian wrote, “and create the most perfect gown for my special day.” And I am sure that will be GLAMO-ROUS!

Rapper Will.I.AM has signed up to perform a special concert in China to encourage American students to study abroad and expand their cultural boundaries. The Black Eyed Peas star met with officials at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. and agreed to headline a gig for the 100,000 Strong Initiative, a motion made by President Barack Obama to match the rising number of Chinese students who travel to America to learn. The singer's show will benefit Americans Promoting Study Abroad, a non-profit organisation which provides financial support to low-income students partaking in exchange programmes in the Asian country. A date for the concert has not yet been set but the gig will take place in Beijing by the end of this year. The 'I Gotta Feeling' hitmaker will also be joined by a number of other American and Chinese artists in an effort to promote diversity. Well done!

BEYOND FEAR 'The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.' - Franklin Roosevelt

Fear is an emotion. The problem isn't 'fear' itself, problems arise when we allow fear to influence our decisions. Just because we experience fear doesn't mean that we are not able or good enough to meet challenges, nor is it a sign that we are about to fail dismally. However, fear confuses us and we use avoidance tactics, procrastinate and attempt to control events or others; we settle for a life filled with anxiety, tension and worry. Fear deceives us, it limits us and blocks our capacity to live a free, joyful and fulfilling life. Now, reflect for a moment on your past fears. Would you agree that the majority of the things that you feared happening, never actually did occur? How much of your life have you spent worrying about things that never happened? OK, what about the time that the thing you feared did happen? When it came down to it, was it as bad as you imagined? Was the fear over-hyped? So, take your current fear and ask yourself, 'Is it really true?' Then ask yourself, 'What do I have to gain by facing this fear and becoming free from it?' Create a very clear picture and a determined aim. Know what the reward for facing your fear will be. How would your life be different? What would you be doing? Who would you be? Imagine yourself completely free from fear and fully alive. By repeatedly listening to our fears we have created the habit of acting on them instinctively, without thinking first. Now we need to create a new pattern for ourselves, one of facing our fears. The secret is to take it step by step. Break down your goal into manageable smaller steps, begin with small challenges and build on

ARIES This week it is important to be careful and diplomatic because there is a possibility of having disagreements with people close to you. The retrograde movement of Uranus requires caution and strategy instead of your usual daring and impulsive nature. Remember that taking a step back doesn't mean giving up. Professional changes are on the horizon with the possibility of success, but try to listen more and talk less.

TAURUS Don't be afraid to share your ideas. Believe in your creativity and you will have good results in your professional life. Romance may be about to appear in your life, but you will keep him or her only if they value and like you which is what you deserve. You will be more demanding and selective this week, but it will also be a time of expansion. Take care of your appearance and show the world what you're made of.

GEMINI Your powers of communication may not be so strong this week, so it's better not to have that serious chat with your

mate. Take advantage of this week to use your knowledge to obtain practical results. You will also be more emotionally impressionable. Use this time to express and pamper yourself by listening to romantic tunes, reading poems or watching good films. This week will be useful in recharging your batteries.

CANCER Strength and determination will be the theme of the week. You will be confident and will fight for your rights and challenge figures of authority. Change is knocking at your door and you will tell your partner what's bothering you. It's time to clean up your internal and external life and discards things that don't suit you anymore.

LEO Love is in the air! You will find happiness with your partner, friends and family. Mercury, the planet of communication is in retrograde movement which can make you feel shy in expressing your love with words, but not through gestures. That flirting or crush can turn into a serious relationship or if you are already in a relationship don't be surprised if your partner pops a

marriage proposal. Enjoy your week and smile.

VIRGO This week you will be able to define your role in society without too much of a song and dance. Your innate sense of organisation and attention for detail will also guide you to the right strategy to get by in your professional life. The best thing to do is keep your plans secret until you see some results. Discretion is the best strategy!

LIBRA Staying focused on daily life can be a challenge for you this week as you will be completely lost in your object of passion. A job interview can be a disaster or a meeting with a friend might be forgotten. Take a deep breath and be careful to not be irresponsible in the other areas of your life. Remember that you can't force love and you don't need to make such an effort to get it. Put your attention in what is essential right now.

SCORPIO Your emotions and creativity will walk hand in hand this week, which will help you to get

them. Ask for help if you need it, enrol in a course and keep up the momentum - be determined. Every step we take increases our belief in ourselves. We can handle our fears and overcome them. “To believe in our own triumph is to give ourselves wings to fly." With this belief, we will have the courage to face our obstacles with ease and win over them. When we fear we are imaging the worst happening, instead harness the power of your mind to work for you and not against you. Imagine the best result. Move from focusing consistently on what you don't want to happen, to what you do want. We set ourselves up! What we focus on is what we get, so be very aware of what you are consistently focusing on. Focus on the best in yourself and visualize yourself succeeding. Nurture this true vision of yourself and allow the real you to emerge. Foster a positive outlook for the future. Be hopeful not doubtful and you will succeed. Hope fills our hearts, gives us courage and is always optimistic. Remember, like attracts like. Then, for the times when a fearful thought does arise in your mind try this: visualise a red stop sign and before you take any action, ground yourself. Take a few deep breathes and have some fear busting affirmations on hand, maybe in your pocket. Finally, make sure you acknowledge each accomplishment, especially when 'you felt the fear and did it anyway' (Susan Jeffers). To face any fear is a great achievement so don't let it pass by unacknowledged. Inner Space, Covent Garden www.innerspace.gov.uk

that long-forgotten project back on the road. You will be surrounded by harmony. Your personal and professional lives might be heading towards big results. Enjoy the lightness that surrounds you at the moment and enjoy yourself more.

SAGITTARIUS Practicality is the order of the week. Move on! It is time to turn your thoughts into actions. It may feel that your efforts are in vain, but at the end of the week you will see that it was all worth it. When you empty your mind, you will make space for new ideas. It's time to look at life from a different perspective!

CAPRICORN It seems that Pluto's retrograde in relation to your sign this week is giving you a break from all the changes you have been facing recently. The moon's appearance in Capricorn means that it is a good time to evaluate feelings calmly. You don't need to decide anything now. Don't hesitate to confront your emotional life. It needn't be at the expense of your work. You don't need to choose between one area and another; they can both exist separately and in harmony.

TO ADVERTISE mail us at sales@brazilianpost.co.uk or call Marcelo 078 2816 5812

AQUARIUS You may feel strange and feel as though you might cry at any time. You may even think that something is wrong with you. Neptune is in Aquarius, which makes you more emotional than usual and you will be more in touch with your playful and sensitive side. That's OK, because not everything needs to be based on science. You may bump into someone, who reminds you of old emotions that have been sleeping until now. Don't get involved in any new projects. It's time to deal with your poetic side.

PISCES Chiron is in Pisces this week, which will make you more generous and willing to help others. But before you try healing someone else, ask yourself - which part of you also needs to be healed? You don't need to make sacrifices if it means injuring yourself. Be brave and share your pain. Don't hide behind the role of a martyr, but ask someone close to you for help. World Global markets in turmoil as recession fears spread Financial markets seesawed last Friday, driven by fast-moving events in Europe and a jobs report that soothed immediate concerns about the U.S. economy but did little to ease longer-term worries. It was an extraordinary end to a week that saw the Dow Jones finish the week down nearly 700 points, its largest point decline since the heart of the financial crisis in October 2008. The selloff left the Dow down 10.7% from its high in April of this year. It's in negative territory for 2011, down 1.2%. While markets closed higher last Friday, there was a fresh jolt four hours later: Credit-ratings firm Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. government's triple-A debt rating for the first time ever. The move left investors facing a weekend of uncertainty about how markets will react Monday. On last Friday morning, it seemed that stocks had dodged a bullet. U.S. employers added a betterthan-expected 117,000 jobs and the unemployment rate ticked down to 9.1% from 9.2%. In the minutes after the employment report, investors sold safe-haven assets like U.S. Treasurys. But economists quickly poked holes in the report's positive veneer. The unemployment rate fell not because of stepped-up hiring, but because more discouraged workers gave up their hunt for jobs and dropped out of the work force. At the same time, the pace of job creation, which included 154,000 new private sector jobs, is barely enough to absorb the growth in population. The news out of Italy lifted stocks almost to their high for the day and gave a boost to the euro, which gained 1.3% against the dollar last Friday. Treasury yields finished the day higher, with the 10year note at 2.554%, up from 2.46% last Thursday. Last Friday capped a tumultuous week that began with financial markets roiled by uncertainty over whether the U.S. was going to raise the federal debt ceiling in time to avoid a default. At the same time, conditions were steady worsening in the European bond markets.

Yingluck becomes Thailand's first female PM Yingluck Shinawatra became politically turbulent Thailand's first female Prime Minister on last Friday after parliament endorsed her crushing election victory. Political novice Yingluck, the sister of ousted former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, gained support from 296 members of the lower house out of a potential 500 -- reflecting the majority enjoyed by her party and its allies. "Miss Yingluck gained more than a simple majority of support in this house, therefore Miss Yingluck was elected prime minister," said house speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont. Yingluck's Puea Thai party and its partners command a three-fifths parliamentary majority after a resounding victory in the July 3 election over the pro-establishment Democrats. The country's 28th prime minister can expect royal endorsement within days to formalise her position. She will face the immediate challenge of bringing stability to the kingdom, after five years of political turmoil since her brother Thaksin Shinawatra was thrown out of office in a 2006 army coup backed by Thailand's elites. "We are still in the middle of a very big conflict in the country with very different ideas about what government should be, and what it should be doing," said Thai political analyst Chris Baker. Analysts believe a key test for Yingluck will simply be whether she can hang on to power in a country where the removal of leaders is commonplace. Thailand has seen 18 actual or attempted military coups since it became a constitutional monarchy in 1932 and only one prime minister, Thaksinin, in that time has served a full fouryear term. Yingluck, described by her brother as his "clone", surprised observers with her assured campaign style, helping her party to a crushing win in last month's election. She has since consolidated her parliamentary dominance by forming a six-party coalition that accounts for 300 of the legislature's 500 seats.

China pressurizes Japan, sends navy fleet to N Korea China has put Japan under immense pressure by sending a navy fleet to neighboring North Korea, and accusing Tokyo of issuing misleading statement about Beijing's military threat. The fleet includes a missile frigate " Luoyang", which landed in Wanson in Democratic People's Republic of Korea or North Korea on last Thursday. It also includes a training ship. Tokyo has for long been worried about close military relationship between China and North Korea. The move came immediately after Japan warned that China's naval forces were likely to increase activities around its waters. The two countries have been involved in bickering over ownership of parts of the East China Sea. Tokyo's issued a white paper discussing military threat posed by an increasingly aggressive China. Tokyo is particularly worried because China is close to launching its first aircraft carrier, which might be put afloat in seas close to Japan. The white paper said China's defense budget has shot up nearly 70 per cent over the past five years, while Japan has cut its military outlays by 3 per cent over the same period. The white paper drew a warning from Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu, who said Japan should not to stray from its longstanding defence posture. He also indicated that Beijing continues to be sore about Japan's military occupation of China before and during World War II. "We hope that Japan will use history as a guide, and earnestly reflect on its defence policies, and do more to enhance mutual trust with its neighbours," the spokesman said. The ministry's website, criticized Tokyo for "irresponsible comments" in the white paper.

US gears up to fight home-grown jihadis Rolling out a new strategy for combating radicalization, White House officials on last Wednesday warned that casting broad suspicion on Muslim Americans is counterproductive and could backfire by alienating a religious minority and fueling extremism. The administration also promised to identify accurate educational materials about Islam for law enforcement officers, providing an alternative to biased and ill-informed literature in use in recent years, including by the FBI. Denis R McDonough, president Obama's deputy national security adviser, told reporters that al-Qaida and those it inspired remained the biggest terrorist threat inside the United States. But McDonough said the bombing and shootings in Norway last month, carried out by a right-wing, anti-Muslim extremist, were a reminder that the government could not focus exclusively on any single brand of radicalism. McDonough said that al-Qaida had a "bankrupt ideology," but that accusing the entire Muslim community of complicity in terrorism could "feed the sense of disenchantment and disenfranchisement that may spur violent radicalization." Instead, he said, Muslim Americans should be treated as a crucial ally of the government to combat terrorism. In an introduction to the document, Obama wrote that "communities especially Muslim-American communities whose children, families and neighbors are being targeted for recruitment by al-Qaida - are often best positioned to take the lead" in countering radicalization.

Lithuania Mayor's shock campaign to fight illegal parking Infuriated with motorists parking their luxury cars illegally around the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, Mayor Arturas Zuokas took the drastic step of driving an armoured vehicle over a Mercedes Sclass, which was parked in a cycle lane. The flamboyant politician decided to take the novel approach of fighting illegally parked cars by destroying them with a camouflaged Russian armoured personnel carrier. "I wanted to send a clear message that people with big and expensive cars can't park wherever they feel like and ignore the rights of pedestrians and bike riders," he was quoted as saying. "It shows a lack of respect and won't be tolerated. Of course, you have to have a sense of humour in my line of work and I thought this would be a way of drawing attention to the fact that the city intends to be proactive in its fight against illegal parking," he added. The shocked 'owner' of the Mercedes was photographed exiting a shop to find his German saloon destroyed by the civic leader, who shakes his hand, tells him not to park his car illegally ever again and merrily cycles off. But not before he's thoughtfully swept up the broken glass on the street. The car was towed away and destroyed. The dramatic scene was actually a set-up by the leader, to underline how keen he is to crush illegal parking. The stunt was filmed for a video released by city officials, which points out that owners of expensive cars such as Ferraris and Rolls Royces regularly park in cycle lanes. "What should the city do about drivers who seem to think they're above the law?" it asks. "It seems that a tank is the best solution." A spokeswoman for the Mayor said that the car was brought in especially for the clip.

Global stock markets tumbled amid fears the U.S. may be heading back into recession and Europe's debt crisis is worsening. The sell-off follows the biggest one-day points decline on Wall Street since the 2008 financial crisis. Oil extended sharp losses to fall below $85 a barrel amid expectations a slowing global economy will undermine demand for crude. In Europe, major markets fell, adding to losses last Thursday. London's FTSE 100 declined 3.5 percent to 5,393.14 and Germany's DAX shed 3.8 percent to 6,172.00. France's CAC-40 lost 2.5 percent to 3,238.80. Wall Street was set for a lower open with Dow futures down 0.8 percent at 11,280 after Thursday's 512.76-point fall, the steepest point decline since Dec. 1, 2008. S&P 500 futures fell 0.6 percent to 1,191.7. Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average slid 3.7 percent to 9,299.88 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dived 4.3 percent to 20,946.14. China's Shanghai Composite Index lost 2.2 percent to 2,626.42. "Losses today have been indiscriminate," said IG Markets strategist Ben Potter in a report. "The big question on everyone's mind is what will happen across European and US markets tonight and will there be any form of emergency policy response?" Investors fretted over the U.S. economic recovery ahead of Friday's

Brazil plans to help industries be more competitive The measures include tax breaks for Brazilian-made products and antidumping measures on cheaper imports mostly from China. Brazil's booming economy has pushed the value of its currency, the real, higher making its exports more expensive. The president said it was "imperative" to protect Brazilian industry and jobs from unfair competition. Brazil's manufacturing industry has been suffering because of a surge in foreign imports, mainly from China, and industrial production has been falling in recent months. This has happened despite the fact that Brazil's economy is one of the world's fastest growing. Brazil has accused the US and China of lowering the value of their currencies, driving up the real, which has gained 6% against the US dollar this year. Called "Bigger Brazil" the long-awaited plans include tax breaks and export incentives for local producers, as well as tougher controls on the importation of foreign goods. Speaking at the unveiling of the plans, Finance Minister Guido Mantega said Brazil was operating on "a predatory, competitive world stage" and promised rigorous regulation of imports. Brazil's government believes that many countries try to bypass import controls by routing goods through a third country. Brazil has already enacted a series of anti-dumping measures aimed at Chinese-made goods.

release of crucial jobs figures for July, which often set the tone in markets for a week or two. Many were also rattled by the lack of agreement in Europe about debt and how to stabilize the euro, said Tom Kaan of Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong. He said they were watching to see if the U.S. Federal Reserve launches a new stimulus effort. “It's a general fear that is clouding the markets at the moment," Kaan said. Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi sank 3.7 percent to 1,943.75 and Taiwan's benchmark skidded 5.6 percent to 7,853.13. Australia's benchmark dropped 4 percent to 4,105.40 and India's Sensex was down 2.8 percent to 17,196.06. In China, state-owned oil producer CNOOC Ltd. plunged 7.7 percent. China Construction Bank Ltd., one of the country's four major stateowned banks, lost 2 percent and Ping An Insurance Ltd. declined 3.9 percent. Investors, already fidgety after protracted political bargaining to raise the U.S. debt limit and worries that Italy and Spain are getting deeply embroiled in Europe's debt crisis, searched for assets considered safer such as gold. "Stocks will continue to dive, especially in Euroland, where profits are disappointing analysts' estimates," said Carl B. Weinberg of High Frequency Economics in a report.

AUGUST 08th - 14th 2011

The Brazilian Post

Highs and lows of outdated equities Many equity investors started 2011 with high hopes. Interest rates were low and set to remain so; corporate profits were strong; and the buoyancy of emerging markets would offset any lingering weaknesses in the developed economies. At Goldman Sachs's global strategy conference in January, an upbeat Jim O'Neill, the boss of the bank's asset-management arm, struggled to imagine what arguments the bears could possibly assemble. Quite a few, as it happens. After the first seven months of the year global stock markets are in effect flat. Despite a lastminute deal on the US debt ceiling, a sharp fall on Wall Street on August 2nd meant that the S&P 500 had lost all its gains for the year. In Europe the mood has turned very sour: the Euro Stoxx 50 index is down by 17% from its February high, and the Italian market has fallen by almost 24%. What has gone wrong? The economic data has been a severe disappointment to the bulls. Revisions published on July 29th show that American economic output is still below its 2007 level. At the start of the year the consensus forecast for American GDP growth was 2.6%, but the annualised increase in the first half was just 0.8%. Bank of America Merrill Lynch has cut its full-year forecast to 1.7% and is predicting 2.3% for 2012, barely in line with trend. Some of this weakness was attributed to the impact of the Japanese earthquake in March, which disrupted output in the world's third-largest economy. But that explanation is wearing thin. Japanese activity is now rebounding but the data in much of the developed world are still deteriorating. The latest source of gloom was the July Institute for Supply Management (ISM) index for American manufacturing. At 50.9, the index was barely above the line that separates expansion from contraction; the new-orders component was below it. David Rosenberg, an economist at Gluskin Sheff, a Canadian asset manager, has consistently raised doubts about the strength of the recovery. He points out that the 9.5-point decline in the ISM index over the past three months is similar to falls that preceded each of the past six American recessions, with only one false signal in 1984. Another problem has been the continued strength of the oil price. This surged in early 2011 on the back of the conflict in Libya. Many analysts expected it to drop back in the following months but Brent crude is still around 25% more expensive than it was at the end of 2010. For consumers the key number is the price of petrol at the pump: in America it has risen by 67 cents a gallon, or 22%, so far this year.

House prices in some parts of Rio up nearly 80% The Paco Real residential area is in a part of the city that was previously only considered a des-res by Rio's criminals and drug lords. But times have changed and a new mood is sweeping the country. Football's World Cup comes to Rio in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. The vast oil reserves off the city's coast will begin pumping crude imminently. Like Brazil as a whole, Rio is booming and the city's new middle class has caught the property owning bug. The house price boom shows no immediate signs of abating. Raids led by armed squads of police are not the traditional route to pulling up property prices, but it's working in Rio. So far, 18 of the city's favela slums have been raided by police in a process known as "pacification". By invading the favelas, the government hopes to force out the local drug dealers and criminals and bring order and economic development for the local residents. "Areas near the pacified favelas used to be places that people avoided living in. Now people are looking to buy there and the prices are rising," according to Mr Netto. Residents are now less concerned about the "stray bullet" premium that used to come as standard with many Rio properties. The contrast between Brazil and Portugal, its old colonial power, could not be starker. Billion-

aire Eike Batista says Brazil is "living a cycle of growth like the US lived in the 1960s" while one was struggling to finance itself and had to be bailed out by the EU and IMF, the other is struggling to deal with large amounts of money flooding into the economy. While interest rates in the eurozone have only recently crept up to 1.25%, the main rate in Brazil reached 12.25% earlier this month. This has caused a flood of money to flow into Brazil as investors look for a return on their investments in the stock market, as well as in areas like property. In the first three months of this year, Brazil saw a net inflow of $35bn into its economy, more than the whole of 2010. As foreign money has flooded in, natural resources have been going the other way - but not at the rate that many would like to see. “Our ports are Jurassic and our airports are miserable," says Eike Batista, Brazil's richest man and the 8th richest in the world. Mr. Batista started out prospecting for gold in the Amazon in 1980s and has expanded his business to take in iron ore production, shipbuilding and oil production. In fact, fact there are not many areas of business that Mr. Batista does not have an interest in: he's opened a floating restaurant, has plans for a new luxury hotel and has started a real estate business.

Ofcom demands better service for disabled customers

People with disabilities who rely on communication services to make phone calls are set to benefit from new measures being proposed by the communications regulator Ofcom. By law, communication providers must provide text relay services for phone users with hearing and/or speech impairments. The service allows users to type messages into a textphone, which are delivered by a relay assistant to the recipient. The assistant then converts their reply back to text for the user. Ofcom research has shown that users found the current communication services slow, with conversations sometimes failing to flow naturally. Under the current service, users have to say, "go ahead" after each part of a conversation. The new features on the text relay service will include allowing users to interject during a conversation, instead of having to wait until the end of a message. They will also allow the service to be accessed on mainstream consumer electronics devices such as PCs and netbooks, in addition to existing relay equipment, such as textphones. Ofcom's consumer group director, Claudio Pollack, said: "People with disabilities can face barriers when using communications services. Although the wide availability and use of broadband and mobile text services has provided greater opportunities for disabled people to communicate, people with hearing and/or speech impairments continue to meet barriers when using voice telephony. "The proposed measures aim to reduce these barriers by allowing conversations to flow naturally in real time." Ofcom is also proposing the introduction of video relay on a restricted basis for registered British Sign Language users. Under the Communications Act 2003, Ofcom has a duty to cater for the needs of disabled people and the elderly. In May, the regulator introduced an emergency SMS scheme for 14,500 users with hearing and speech impediments to text the details of incidents to the emergency services instead of calling 999.

Progress is being made, with a new set of standards for the sport unfolding before our eyes regardless of whether officialdom wishes to acknowledge it or not. One man has managed to rewrite his own line and one for the new era: Ryan Lochte (USA), on 1:54.00 in the 200m medley at the world championships in Shanghai last month, the first long-course world record since the ban on non-textile suits on January 1, 2010. NBA season at risk

The NBA season may be canceled entirely because de commissioner's negotiating leeway is in danger of being undermined by a group of hard-line owners. NBA owners and players held a formal collective bargaining session for the first high-level negotiations last week but after nearly three hours of discussions the sides emerged as far apart as they were when the day began. Stern said the sides were "at the same place" as they were when the lockout began July 1 just before the old collective bargaining agreement ran out. Owners are seeking significant changes to the league's salary structure, claiming $300 million in losses last season and hundreds of millions more in each year of the previous agreement, which was ratified in 2005. Players have acknowledged the losses but disputed their size, and have balked at the league's push for a hard salary cap and reduction in salaries and maximum contract lengths. The union has encouraged players to find work rather than give in to the owners' economic demands; with the hope that owners would offer better proposals if they see their players have other options. Player Association executive director Bill Hunter recently sent a memo to all players endorsing lockedout players to consider playing overseas.

Fight for freedom and change is the norm in the world. It doesn't matter where people are, they are tired of being controlled and manipulated but maybe there is a place where changes have a fair way of happening. The Brazilian Football Confederation is maybe the most influential confederation in the world and its president Ricardo Teixeira is one the most known people on the football scene. Ricardo Teixeira has been in charge of the Brazilian Football Confederation for the last 20 years and his word is law in the organization and Brazilian football is totally in his hands. The president is under investigation for corruption, however, he does not show any fear about what can happen to him and is still making his rules. Following harsh criticism and attacks from the media Ricardo Teixeira is threatening to boycott the 2014 World Cup choosing who will have access to matches and interviews. People are unhappy, the players want changes and the Brazilian government needs to clarify the situation so maybe Teixeira's era is close to the end and a new democratic time will appear soon.

Pan American updates

1,500 doping tests, including blood analyses to detect growth hormones, have been done in Guadalajara. The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) Medical Committee President Eduardo Henrique de Rose was joined by 15 other medical experts that the commission was comprised of during the XXIV Pan American Sports Medical Congress in Guadalajara. "The objective is to make a final revision of all medical attention to athletes and managers, to revise the control procedures for the tests that will be implemented during the Games," said the director. The director proceeded to say that together with the Drug Testing Laboratory, they would be establishing the number, dates, and procedures for the 1,500 drug tests to be carried out during the competitions for the Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games, where blood samples will be taken to detect growth hormones for the first time.

COPACABANA: GETTING A FACELIFT

Copacabana, perhaps the most famous of all of Rio’s beach-side neighborhoods, needs little introduction, but since its heyday in the 1930s the glamour has been gradually giving way to a grittier reality, and the glitterati have moved on down the beach to Ipanema. However, the neighborhood is undergoing a quiet metamorphosis in anticipation of the Olympic Games in 2016 that is slowly putting the shine back.

chaotic and the bus drivers still drive far too quickly, but it’s a step in the right direction.” The beach is also receiving a major facelift courtesy of Orla Rio’s project to renovate Copacabana’s beachside kiosks. The new kiosks are made from stainless steel and glass allowing a view from all angles, and they feature subterranean kitchens and public bathrooms. But while all the signs point towards a shiny new future for Copacabana, David Eger from Rio Apartment Rental urges an honest caution to those thinking of investing in property in the neighborhood. “I’d wait to see what happens in the next year, due to the huge increases in real estate values experienced in the past couple years. The bubble might burst. Of course if you find a great deal, go for it, but, buyer beware here….no mortgage insurance.” Indeed, rental prices have gone up by over 100 percent since a last survey in April 2010. Then, a basic one-bedroom apartment started from around R$500 per month. Now the starting price is in the region of R$1,200 per month, not including condo fees and

One of the most significant changes the neighborhood has witnessed in recent years is the pacification of its surrounding favelas. In 2009 the favelas Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira overlooking Copacabana’s eastern-most tip, and PavãoPavãozinho and Cantagalo at the south-western end were amongst the first favelas to be occupied by Police Pacification Force in the city’s South Zone, significantly improving the safety and security in the area. Copacabana resident Priscila Paiva commented, “I used to see a lot more crimes going on in the streets, like people buying and selling drugs in broad daylight. I’m sure it’s still going on to some extent, but it seems a lot less obvious now.” The second major change for Copacabana was the inauguration in February this year of Bus Rapid System – a new system of bus lanes on Copacabana’s main arterial roads, Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana going north, and Ruas Barata Ribeiro and Raul Pompeia going south. Paiva says, “The traffic in • One of Copacabana's Copacabana was notorious. My commute to renovated beach-side kiosks work has definitely improved. It can still be

taxes.Purchase prices have also demonstrated dramatic increases. One-bedroom apartments start at around R$200,000 for just 28 to 30 square meters, and a two-bedroom will set you back upwards of R$400,000 for 60 to 100 square meters – an increase of over R$100,000 on last year’s figures. However, Eger goes on to say, “The population of Copacabana is aging…this may prevail as an opportunity for more affluent and worldly people to purchase, remodel and rebuild this world-famous, beautiful location.”
