Brazil is leading a shift in Latin America's oil industry while maintaining investments to increase oil production even as turmoil hits financial markets in Brazil and around the world. By the 2020s, with the potential to alter the geopolitics of energy, Brazil could emerge as the fourthlargest oil producer after Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States. Petrobras's huge offshore oil discoveries in recent years now enable its leaders to contend that it could surpass Exxon Mobil as the world's largest publiclytraded oil company. If Brazil challenges itself enough and pole-vaults all the obstacles in its path, it would be well on-track from being a third world economy to a world economic giant.

Brazil: On the verge of altering the geopolitics of energy In 1954 Petrobras, the newly created national oil company, decided that it needed to go offshore or abroad to meet its oil needs. And then Petrobras grew at its own impressive pace for decades, mixing progress with setbacks as Brazil struggled with drawn-out dependence on foreign oil. But Petrobras's huge offshore oil discoveries in recent years now enable its leaders to contend that it could surpass Exxon Mobil as the world's largest publicly-traded oil company. “Petrobras is engaged in by far the biggest industrial undertaking in Brazil's history,” said Norman Gall, director of the Fernand Braudel Institute of World Economics in São Paulo. Mr. Gall said Petrobras's annual spending, estimated at more than $45 billion through 2020, might surpass NASA's budget in the 1960s, when it was preparing to send a man to the moon. Brazil, which is maintaining investments to increase oil production even as turmoil hits financial markets in Brazil and around the world, is leading a shift in Latin America's oil industry with the potential to alter the geopolitics of energy. By the 2020s, if the stars align in Brazil's favor, the country could emerge as the fourth-largest oil producer after Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States. Brazil's rise as an oil power is part of a broader expansion of the Western Hemisphere's energy output, especially in the United States and Canada. But it also offers a vivid example of the reordering of Latin America's energy hierarchy in which traditional energy exporters like Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia are seeing their sway eclipsed by nations with big discoveries. Emerging exploration technologies like those capable of tapping rock formations by combining horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing explain some of the focus on the region's potential to produce new oil kings. In May, for instance, Argentina announced its biggest oil discovery since the 1980s in a sprawling Patagonian shale deposit, luring new interest from foreign companies like Apache Corporation and Exxon Mobil. Argentina ranks third in the world, after China and the United States, in shale gas reserves with about 22 trillion cubic meters, or 774 trillion cubic feet, according to a report released in April by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Elsewhere in South America, the exodus of Venezuelan petroleum engineers after President Hugo Chávez purged Venezuela's oil industry of dissident employees is lifting the fortunes of neighboring Colombia, where output has roughly doubled in five years to almost one million barrels a day. If Colombia improves security conditions further, officials see production climbing to 1.7 million barrels by 2020. In Brazil alone, output may increase from just above two million barrels a day to more than five million by 2020, about the equivalent of adding another Kuwait to world oil production.

Perhaps no country in the region better illustrates its potential, and its capacity to fall short than Venezuela, which surpassed Saudi Arabia this year as the nation with the largest oil reserves, at 1.19 trillion barrels. Pointing to the influence that Venezuela might possibly wield in global markets, the U.S. Geological Survey said that just one of its hydrocarbon assets, the heavy oil found in an area called the Orinoco Belt, called the Faja in Venezuela, is the largest oil accumulation it ever assessed. But that geological good fortune arguably has not translated into broader energy clout for Venezuela. The country's regional influence has waned in recent years as its national oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, has struggled to raise output while focusing on other objectives like subsidized food distribution. While Venezuela and Brazil maintain warm ties with one another, and have even explored collaborating on a refinery project in northeastern Brazil, one country's loss is effectively another's gain in regional political heft. Brazil's new naval buildup, for instance, would give its military a heavier presence from its deepwater oil fields into South Atlantic sea lanes. Other countries in the region, notably Colombia, have taken note of Brazil's experience in the 1990s of exposing Petrobras to market forces by issuing shares that now trade in São Paulo and New York, while still maintaining state control. Of course, big challenges still await Brazil's energy industry. The devilish complexity of producing oil from its “pre-salt” discoveries off the coasts of the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, located in water 3,000 meters, or 9,800 feet, deep and beneath about 4,000 meters of salt, sand and rock, have some investors questioning whether Petrobras is overextending itself. Just one discovery made in 2007, called Tupi at the time and now renamed Lula, may hold as much as eight billion barrels of oil and natural gas, making it a contender for second-largest field discovered in the past two decades, behind Kazakhstan's Kashagan Field. The logistics of the new offshore fields, located so far into the Atlantic that Petrobras needs entire platforms midway to the coast where workers can sojourn between land and sea, are not the only challenges. Bitter talks between Brasília and regional officials over royalties could delay development of new fields, and portend protracted revenue disputes. Middle East oil remains cheaper to produce, while cost overruns here could limit the ability to meet output targets.Energy historians also warn that the bounty off Brazil's coast could become a resource curse when big inflows from oil exports start streaming in. Brazilian leaders, guiding a highly diversified economy, seem aware of the risks. They have taken the important step of creating a sovereign wealth fund to invest some revenues.

Pakistan's agro sector Energy, food gets boost from Brazil security to dominate Rio+20 Boosting energy efficiency and renewables and providing food for a future world of eight billion will dominate next year's UN Rio+20 conference, the talks' cocoordinator said on last Thursday. The June 46 event in Rio de Janeiro is taking place 20 years after the landmark 1992 Earth Summit that set down UN conventions for protecting biodiversity and tackling climate change. In a meeting with journalists in Paris, envoy Brice Lalonde, a former French ecology minister, said next year's event "will probably confirm the principles of Rio." But, he indicated it would not launch any top-down projects on a similar horizonscanning scale. "1992 was just after the fall of the Berlin Wall, so the geopolitical situation was different compared with today," said Lalonde, saying many countries today fretted about their budgets and prospects for growth. As a result, the focus in Rio will be on the "green economy" and on practical work to spur sustainable development, he said. "At the top of the list is energy, which of course is the key for addressing climate change," Lalonde said. The conference could endorse pledges to provide universal access to energy, halve "energy intensity" and double the share of renewables in the world's energy mix by 2030. Food security would be another target. The world's population is officially set to reach

seven billion on October 31, and is likely to reach eight billion within another two decades. "With a billion more people coming onto the planet by 2030, how do we boost nutritional security but without using more water, land or energy?" said Lalonde. Other likely "concrete" objectives will be cooperation on improving the quality of life in cities, saving the oceans from pollution and over-fishing, and strengthening international help in disasters, a request put forward by Japan, he said. The UN is canvassing governments and non-governmental organisations for their views on what the conference's political document should contain. These opinions will be condensed into a "zero draft" that will then be hammered out in negotiations due to finish in late May, said Lalonde. Apart from the talks at political level, the conference will also host meetings gathering activists, businesses, donors and representatives from regions and cities. "Action starts at the local and national level. Nothing will happen at UN level if nothing happens in individual countries," said Lalonde. Rio+20 has not been designated a summit because heads of state and government have yet to say whether they will attend. The last big environmental summit, in Copenhagen in December 2009, which sought to seal a global pact on a climate change, was a nearfiasco.

Lingerie-clad Gisele ad permitted Brazil's National Advertising Council denied a request last Thursday to ban a television ad featuring lingerie-clad supermodel Gisele Bundchen after a government agency called it sexist. "The stereotypes in this ad campaign are common in society, easily identifiable and do not denigrate women," the council's members said. Brazil's Ministry for Women submitted a request in September to suspend the ad, saying it reinforces the stereotype of women as sex objects. In the commercial for the Brazilian intimates brand Hope, Brazilian-born Bundchen is clad in panties, a bra and high heels, in an effort to distract her husband when she delivers bad news, about damaging the car, exceeding her credit limit and her mother coming to live with them. Some men had called for the ad to be put down because it took them for "idiots." The TV ads send a message "that sensuality can melt any man" and "encourages Brazilian women to use their charms... to minimize the reactions of their husbands," the Ministry for Women had said. The ministry managed to ban a beer ad in 2010 featuring US model Paris Hilton in suggestive poses.

Brazil would provide germplasm exchange, sugarcane and cotton improvement technology to enhance agriculture output as well for development of the sector in the country. A four member Delegation from Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) led by Bruno de Amorim Maciel visited Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) last Thursday and discussed proposed areas of cooperation. Chairman PARC, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad welcomed the Brazilian delegation and reiterated the keen interest of the government to strengthen cooperation between both the countries in agro-research and development. Head of Brazalian delegation Bruno assured their full cooperation in the prosperity of agriculture in Pakistan. The delegation members informed that first both the governments will sign general agreement for Technical Cooperation which would be followed by specific agreements in different fields. Brazilian side has also shown their interest to help Pakistan overcome the dengue virus which is currently a big issue in the Punjab province.

The provincial representative requested the Brazilian delegation to provide literature and other related information to develop dengue management strategy. Pakistan side has shown their interest to coordinate in the acquisition of some latest agricultural machines related to sugarcane and cotton crops for which possibilities of linkage of private sectors of both the countries may be explored. Pakistan side has shown their interest for the capacity building of their institutions to establish model units used for the productivity enhancement of crop and livestock of small scale farmers. Brazilian delegation suggested that Pakistani delegations may visit Brazil in two stages for mutually benefiting in the sugarcane, cotton and exchange of germplasm, rural extension and public policies for small scale farmers. The delegation also visited the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) and appreciated the research activates being carried out at the center.

Minimum bid set for Brazil's airport auction Operators interested in running Brazil's largest airport will be required to make a minimum bid of $1.3 billion, Brazil's aviation authority said on last Thursday. Brazil, which has seen double-digit annual growth in air traffic, is planning to expand and modernize its main airports ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Bidding for the rights to build and operate three airport terminals is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 22, although authorities say the date depends on rulings by government watchdogs. Investors have been closely watching the bidding amid broader uncertainty over Brazil's investment climate. A heavy government hand in several industries has raised concern with some private investors. Earlier this year the government said that Infraero, the stateowned company that currently runs most airports, will maintain a veto right on strategic decisions in

the joint-ventures it will form with winning bidders. Infraero will hold a 49 percent stake in these joint ventures. The winning bidder for Guarulhos, Sao Paulo's main international airport, will be charged 10 percent of gross revenue over a 20-year contract. In addition to airport fees, the operator will earn 804 million reais in revenues by 2032, compared with an estimated 373 million reais in 2012, Secretary of Civil Aviation Wagner Bittencourt said. The estimated return on investment for each of the projects is 6.46 percent, according to Bittencourt's office. Required investments at Guarulhos total 5.2 billion reais. Brazil will also auction off concessions at Viracopos airport, in Sao Paulo state, as well as at the airport in the capital, Brasilia. Bidders for Viracopos, which requires investments of 9.9 billion reais, will have to offer at least 521 million reais and will pay 5 percent of gross revenues over a 30-year

Brazil presidency's blog hacked in protest of corruption

Brazilian presidency's blog suffered a hacking attack on last Thursday and was defaced by a protesting post published by the hacker, local press reported. The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday when the intruder posted on the presidency's home page a photograph of a recent protest against corruption, in which protesters put green and yellow brooms in front of the Congress building. The photograph was accompanied by a message, in which the hacker called for the end to corruption in Brazil and for open voting in the Congress. "Votes are currently secret, not allowing electors to know how the representatives are actually voting. Politicians should be righteous, incorruptible," said the hacker, who signed the message as "@DonR4UL." According to the government, no data was stolen. The presidency's technology department took the page offline and restored it to normality hours later. In June, some 200 Brazilian government websites suffered major hacking attacks, among which are the Internal Revenue Service, Institute of Geography and Statistics and state-controlled oil and gas giant Petrobras. The hackers which invaded the government websites in June also called for an end to government corruption and complained about the high fuel prices in the country.

Rio's open-armed Christ celebrates 80 years Arms wide open above Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer marked its 80th anniversary last Wednesday as the fifth largest statue of Jesus in the world and a symbol of the 2016 Olympic city. Hundreds of worshippers celebrated the anniversary, aong with a vigil, concerts and an eight-meter (26foot) cake, a fitting tribute in Brazil, the biggest Catholic country in the world with 130 million faithful. "The gift to Christ is the world's most beautiful city," Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes told reporters. "Christ, with open arms, this is how we welcome those who come visit us." Celebrations began late last Tuesday with a youth vigil and an air show. Concerts were being held until late Wednesday. Inaugurated on October 12, 1931, the 38-meter (125-foot) statue was built and designed by Brazilian architect Heitor da Silva Costa. But it was a Frenchman of Polish descent who sculpted the Christ statue's head and hands. With its panoramic view of the city from atop the 710-meter (2,330-foot) Corcovado hill in the Tijuca Forest, the site has become a must-see destination for over a million visitors each year. Pope John Paul II was the first pope to bless the city at the Christ statue's feet in 1980. In March, US President Barack Obama made a family trip there during an official visit to Brazil. It was declared a historical monument in 1973 and in 2007, the statue was listed as one of the new seven wonders of the world. "It's the most amazing thing I have ever seen," a child said after visiting the statue with a school group. A Spanish couple posed nearby for a traditional picture in front of the Christ. "I was so emotional that I almost cried when I saw him," said Ana Maria Perez, who was visiting Brazil for the first time with her husband Julian after 45 years of marriage. Her husband was impressed by the "spectacular" statue and its "gaze full of emotion, forgiveness." “We are a little closer to the heavens, on top of this wonderful mountain," said Nurten Bigakli, a 48-year-old who traveled from Turkey. She held the hands of friends Inci and Selma to "pray for our families, our children."

Argentina considers Brazil key partner in global crisis Argentina's Deputy Economy Minister Roberto Feletti last Monday said Brazil is a key partner to face the adverse effects of the economic crisis affecting the United States and Europe. In an interview with a local radio station, Feletti said the relation with Brazil is decisive for Argentina especially in the sectors of industry, exports and political affairs. "Today nobody can have political aspirations without considering a South American integration and a close relation with Brazil," he said. Feletti said Argentina now seems to be in good situation. If the international crisis worsens, the country's economic activities would be shifted toward the domestic market and its trade with Brazil and other countries in the region. So far this year, Argentina's imports from Brazil have risen 31.5 percent, while the exports to the country have grown 18.4 percent compared with 2010. Argentina "has a low level of debt, sufficient reserves, a trade surplus and a prospect of no imminent potential financial risks. This is a year of elections and nevertheless what we see in the streets is that people have confidence in the future," Feletti said.

Explosion hits restaurant in Rio; 3 killed A powerful explosion likely triggered by a gas leak ripped through a restaurant in downtown Rio de Janeiro early last Thursday, leaving three people dead and 17 injured, the Brazilian city's mayor said. Three of those hurt were in serious condition, Mayor Eduardo Paes told reporters at the scene of the explosion, which occurred around 7:30 am (1030 GMT). The blast demolished an eatery located on the ground floor of a building in the center of Rio, destroying much of the lower two floors of the edifice. "Most of the injured were passers-by," said Paes, adding that the number of victims would have been higher if the explosion had taken place later, with more shops open. The building was evacuated, and civil defense workers were studying the structure to see if there was a risk of collapse, the mayor added. Public Security spokesman Colonel Lima Castro said it appeared the blast was the result of a leak from a cooking gas tank that led to an accumulation when the restaurant was closed. "When the cook came and turned on the light, that led to the detonation," he said. The cook was killed along with two passers-by, the official said. The explosion was was so strong that some people were thrown up to 40 meters (130 feet) away, reports said. Tiradentes Square, where the restaurant was located, was covered in broken glass and debris including pieces of furniture and blown out air-conditioner units.

Foxconn mulls Brazil touch screen factories Brazil is in negotiations with Taiwan IT giant Foxconn to open two factories to manufacture touch screens in a multi-billion dollar project, a top Brazilian official said last Thursday. "What is under discussion with Foxconn is a major investment to produce touch screens, which are so far only made in four countries in the world," said Science and Technology Minister Aloizio Mercadante. "And Brazil would be the first Western country to produce them," he said, estimating the project would be worth several billion dollars. He did not give any further details, other than to say there would also be

Brazilian investors and the participation of the state-run Brazilian Development Bank. In return Brazil was asking for "unrestricted technology transfer," he added. Foxconn has been working in Brazil since 2003, and already operates four factories in Latin America's biggest economy. A fifth is being built in Jundiai, in Sao Paulo state. During a visit to China in April, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said Foxconn, which makes iPads and iPhones, was considering investing $12 billion in Brazil to build computer and mobile phone components. She said a working group had been formed to study the proposal.

To get spouse into UK forces free Italian UK, earn more? ship from

The British government is planning to increase the minimum amount that UK nationals must earn before being allowed to bring a dependent foreign spouse to live in the country, a move that is not likely to go down well with immigrants from countries like India. Families wanting to bring spouses or relatives to the UK also face the prospect of having to pay a bond of thousands of pounds in case they end up claiming benefits , according to media reports on last Monday. The new proposals are being considered by the government as it draws up plans to toughen rules on migrants from outside the EU who wish to settle in the country. But the move is likely to prove controversial with immigrant groups from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh where arranged marriages remain a strong tradition and could be open to challenge in courts for discriminating against couples on low incomes. About 50,000 visas were issued to family members of UK citizens and those with permanent residence in 2010. A sample of 500 found that 70% of UK sponsors earned less than ÂŁ20,000 a year after tax. In 2007 Labour outlined plans for UK families sponsoring relatives visiting from outside EU to pay a ÂŁ1,000 bond to ensure that they returned home and did not work illegally. A similar plan was put forward in 2000. Both were shelved after protests from immigrant communities. The government also intends to look at new measures to crack down on forced marriages making it a specific offence to force someone to marry. A consultation on family visas ended recently and ministers are hoping to introduce tougher conditions in April

Somali pirates

British forces freed an Italian cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in a dramatic rescue on last Tuesday after retrieving a message in a bottle tossed by hostages from a porthole alerting ships nearby the crew was safely sealed inside an armored area. British special forces freed 23 crew members that was hijacked by Somali pirates on last Monday. Italy's foreign ministry expressed "great satisfaction" in the operation to save the D'Alessio Group-owned cargo ship. The ministry said the operation was carried out by two navy ships - one British and one American and coordinated by Italian Adm Gualtiero Mattesi as part of Nato's ocean shield anti-piracy force. The 11 pirates who hijacked the Montecristo have all been arrested, Italian news agency ANSA said quoting sources. The ship had a 23member crew, including six Indians besides those from Italy and Ukraine. The 56,000-tonne bulk carrier 'Montecristo' was

hijacked 620 miles off Somalia on last Monday by five pirates in a small boat. According to the Italian-based firm 'Dalmare Spa' which manages the ship, the vessel was carrying a consignment of iron materials. The Italian defence minister said the crew were doing well. The ship had set off from the port of Liverpool and was understood to be en route to Vietnam. Media reports said that as soon as the Italian ship left the escort of a Japanese naval vessel and entered the Indian Ocean it came under attack from the pirates. Britain's ministry of defence confirmed that the Royal Navy "was involved in a compliant boarding" - in which the pirates indicated they would surrender and sailors boarded the vessel to take them into custody. "The crew used tricks out of a film, throwing a bottle in the sea" with an SOS message inside, Italian defence minister Ignazio La Russa said, adding that they had then barricaded themselves in.

Couple to use Finance protests hit London lottery win to make pals rich A British couple who won £101 million in the EuroMillions lottery said on last Tuesday they would use their winnings to marry and make up to 20 friends and family millionaires. Dave Dawes, a shift supervisor at a food producer, and his partner Angela Dawes, a charity shop volunteer, were the only winners of Britain's third-largest lottery jackpot, worth 116 million euros or $157 million. In a press conference, Dave Dawes, 47, said the couple went into "meltdown" as they watched the draw live on television and realized their numbers had come up. "It was just mad, I couldn't believe my eyes," he said. "We were doing several checks that night: the TV, the website... I looked at (Angela) and said 'My god, we're the only ones!" It was only the third time the couple had played EuroMillions. The number Dave deliberately chose was 18, the date of his oldest son's birthday. The couple had to wait until Monday for their win to be verified, but have already discussed how they will spend some of the money. "My mum and dad live in Portugal so we're going to buy a house over there, we're going to get married next year. We are also going to buy a better ring," Angela Dawes said.

Ex-WSJ publisher to testify in phone hack scandal

Rupert Murdoch's former right-hand man will be questioned by British lawmakers on how much he knew about the phone hacking scandal, lawmakers said last Tuesday. Parliament's media committee, which is investigating the scandal, said that former Wall Street Journal publisher and top Murdoch aide Les Hinton would testify by video link on Oct. 24. The announcement was made in a brief scheduling note emailed to journalists and didn't include any details about what the hearing's agenda would be. But Hinton has emerged as a central figure in the scandal, which has damaged Murdoch's international media empire and convulsed the world of British journalism. Hinton was executive chairman of News International, the U.K. newspaper division of News Corp., while illegal behavior was allegedly rife at the News of the World, the division's flagship Sunday tabloid. Hinton testified in 2007 and 2009 that he had not seen any evidence the hacking had spread beyond one reporter, but documentary evidence and testimony from other former executives have since cast doubt on his claims. Hinton worked with Murdoch for more than half a century before he resigned in the wake of the scandal. His closeness to his former boss — Murdoch said in July that he would trust Hinton "with my life" — means that his appearance will receive particularly close scrutiny. Separately, London's new police commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe told lawmakers that his officers were assisting 30 British investigations into the tabloid phone hacking scandal. Alongside three criminal inquiries led by London police — also known as the Met — Britain has a host of other ongoing reviews, including a judge-led study of media ethics, a probe by the police complaints watchdog, a review of ties between police and the press and various examinations by Parliamentary committees. "I can entirely understand why that is necessary, but what it does mean, in terms of the Met, is that all those different groups expect us to provide information," Hogan-Howe said. Hogan-Howe, appointed after his predecessor and another top officer stepped down amid the scandal, said he hoped to restore standards in the police department. "There will be things to resolve, but we will work our through it and build the trust of the people of London," he told the Home Affairs Select Committee.

Around 800 people rallied in London's financial heart Saturday amid a heavy police presence as part of world protests against corporate greed and budget cutbacks. The demonstrators, some of them masked, were pushed back by police as they tried to march from Saint Paul's Cathedral to the London Stock Exchange, and minor scuffles broke out. The marchers, bearing banners reading "Strike Back", "No Cuts" and "Goldman Sachs Is the Work of the Devil", were ringed by three police cordons while mounted officers and vehicles also stood by. But the protest, to the sound of guitars and drums, was overwhelmingly peaceful and the cathedral remained open to visitors, though the nearby underground station was closed. Organisers in a group calling itself OccupyLSX were hoping for thousands of participants after some 15,000 people expressed support on Facebook and Twitter. Ben Walker, 33, a teacher from Norwich, eastern England, was carrying a rolled-up sleeping bag and said he planned to spend one or two nights in the area. "I'm here today mainly as a sense of solidarity with the movements that are going on around the world," he said. "We're hoping for a kind of justice in the global financial system.” Adam, a London-based student in his twenties from the United States, said he had already taken part in the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York. "I see this as a global movement. The banking systems and economies of the world are all inter-related now," he said. Inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement and Spain's "Indignants", people began taking to the streets across the world on Saturday, targeting 951 cities in 82 countries. It was the biggest show of strength yet by a movement born on May 15 when a rally in Madrid's central square of Puerta del Sol sparked a protest that spread internationally.

Britain has pledged backing for US reprisals against Iran following an apparent assassination plot in Washington. Downing Street said Tehran should be "held accountable" amid allegations that government factions were involved in a plan to kill the Saudi ambassador. The American authorities announced that two Iranian nationals had been charged with offences including conspiracy to murder a foreign official. Manssor Arbabsiar, who is in custody in New York, and his alleged co-conspirator Gholam Shakuri, who is said to be in Iran, are believed to have been targeting a restaurant frequented by ambassador Adel Al-Jubeir. The plot was apparently uncovered by a US agent posing as part of a Mexican drugs cartel, who was enrolled by the suspects to help. US attorney general Eric Holder told a press conference: "The criminal complaint unsealed today exposes a deadly plot directed by factions of the Iranian government to assassinate a foreign ambassador on US soil with explosives. Through the diligent and co-ordinated efforts of our law enforcement and intelligence agencies, we were able to disrupt this plot before anyone was harmed." Secretary of state Hillary Clinton said the US was preparing new penalties against Iran, including finan-

cial sanctions against individuals. A Downing Street spokesman said: "We congratulate the US authorities on the successful operation to disrupt a conspiracy to attack diplomats in the United States. "Indications that this plot was directed by elements of the Iranian regime are shocking. Directing an attack against another country is a flagrant violation of international law which calls for the strongest condemnation. The United Kingdom is in close touch with the US authorities on this case. We will support measures to hold Iran accountable for its actions." Tehran has reportedly dismissed the allegations, with a spokesman for president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad branding them a "fabrication".

We spoke to 3 Brazilian girls about the 23rd edition of Europalia, the biggest festival of culture in Europe which paid homage this year to Brazil. “It's a cool way of expressing our culture and to provide more information about our Brazil. It also helps us to deal with being homesick. I love my country and I'm always happy when people from other places have the opportunity to get to know Brazil better.” Leda de Souza. “It's a chance for Europe to get to know our culture. They can learn about our type of music and dance without confusing it with other countries. It's a way for people from here to learn about the good side of Brazil.” Marcelle Fonseca “A festival like this represents the culture of Brazil. We shouldn't just talk about the bad things in Brazil, like the politics. But with enterprise like this we can showcase current Brazilian development, to promote tourism.” Rosana Robeiro Rosa.

The UK is set to push ahead with a new generation of nuclear power plants after a report into the Fukushima disaster found no reason to curtail the use of reactors here. The review by chief nuclear inspector Dr Mike Weightman examined the lessons that could be learned for the UK from the crisis at the Fukushima reactor in Japan when it was hit by a magnitude 9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March. It revealed no "fundamental weaknesses" in the regulatory or safety assessment regimes of the UK nuclear industry, although it did outline 38 areas where improvements could be made. Energy Secretary Chris Huhne said the report showed that reactors could go on supplying homes and businesses with electricity in the UK. "The report makes clear that the UK has one of the best nuclear safety regimes in the world, and that nuclear power can go on powering homes and businesses across the UK, as well as supporting jobs. "We must, however, continue to improve where we can,

not just with operating power stations and new sites, but by dealing with our nuclear legacy in a robust and efficient manner too." In a written statement to MPs, Mr Huhne said the final review confirmed interim findings by Dr Weightman which offered reassurance that new nuclear could be a part of the low-carbon energy mix in the UK. The Government had signalled it would be pushing ahead with new nuclear power plants, which ministers say are necessary to keep the lights on and cut carbon, after the interim findings were published in May. The Government has also confirmed eight sites it believes are suitable for new nuclear plants, all of which are adjacent to existing reactors. The final report was welcomed by engineers, industry and unions, who said nuclear power was an important part of the UK's future energy mix. But Greenpeace, which is pursuing a judicial review over the Government's decision to green-light new reactors before the final study was published, criticised the review for being "rushed".

Hello beloved readers, here's bringing your favourite section full of celebrity news. And this week was all about Beyonce's “fake” baby bump, unbelievable no? Then Hilary starred in 'the most awkward moment' by attending Chechnya's President's birthday party, and we can say that he is not a Dalai Lama type of man. But the real scoop is that our queen is back: Lindsay was kicked out of community service just for being her, a diva. Chew on that, join me for more and send me your love and feedback at: carla@brazilianpost.co.uk

KIM AND KRIS

fight over her spending habits!

Apparently, the dream-marriage is not so heavenly as it seems. According to sources, moving to New York has created unexpected friction between the love birds and the pair just got into a massive fight! "Kris was looking forward to settling into life with Kim," says an insider. "This week it all just exploded.” What's the matter between these two? Kim spends too much money! Our source explained: “One of the biggest issues for Kris is Kim's preoccupation with money. He has started to pay attention to how much she spends, and it's been a major shock. He tried to talk to her about slowing down, but she told him it was none of his business.” Let's be honest here though, with the amount of money Kim makes a year is there such a thing as spending too much? Apparently, Kris, who makes a fraction of the money the Kardashian empire does, thinks there is! Our guy continued: “He makes great money, but it's not close to the amount Kim earns or is used to spending. There is no way she's going to tone down her lifestyle, so they have to keep making a lot of money.” We have a solution: Kris, you knew she loved to shop before you married her, so don't be surprised. Whatever she's buying, we're sure she can afford it. And Kim, as Kris' wife, your actions are his business now!

Hilary Swank regrets attending Chechen bash

Hilary Swank and several other celebrities came under fire this week after it was reported that they attended the birthday party concert for the President of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, a ruthless man accused of torturing and killing many people. However, Hilary maintains that when she accepted the invitation, she had no idea what kind of man Ramzan was accused of being. (What? Has she heard of Google?) She was simply interested in going to the concert. She released a statement explaining: "I deeply regret attending this event. If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone." The interesting part is that Swank gave a speech at the event (you can check it out on Youtube), where she not only offered him a "Happy Birthday," but also told the press, who questioned her knowledge of the President's birthday: "I read … I do my research." Any conclusions?!

Jean Paul Gaultier has made it crystal clear that he's on Team Madonna. The designer expressed himself in an interview with Último Secundo, telling them: "Nobody can be like Madonna. She does things that Madonna has already done. Madonna is also very beautiful. She can be a blonde, a redhead, black-haired. Lady Gaga can't do it." We can't say we're surprised by his statements. JPG owes a large part of his success to Madge for wearing the now iconic conical bra.

Ozzy Osbourne releasing self-help book! What do you do after you've survived a severe alcohol and drug addiction, multiple overdoses, multiple deaths and a super manager like Sharon Osbourne as wife? If you're Ozzy Osbourne, you would write a self-help book! Based on his advice columns appearing in The Sunday Times and Rolling Stone, the rocker is releasing his best work in Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy. While we're sure there will be plenty of sex, drugs, and rock & roll mixed in, expect Ozzy to weigh in on health, family, and personal relationship problems. But don't expect any serious medical advice though. "I don't mind doing the column, it's a bit of fun but anyone who reads it, please don't think you're going to get the cure for the next f**king plague from me because I ain't that kind of doc.", Ozzy explained. So what can we expect? Well, Ozzy says in a recent interview that most of his advice is "basically common sense." If we've learned anything from the internet though, it's that a great deal of people don't have too much of it! Ozzy shares one example of such an occasion, saying: "One of the questions I remember there was a girl having cosmetic surgery and she didn't want the rest of

the people at work to realize she'd had cosmetic surgery. I said, Well don't have the cosmetic surgery if you don't want people to see what you're going to look like.'' Even though his advice can be comical, there is a lot of truth to what he is saying. When asked about advice on drugs, he responded: "If they want to do it, it's their business but all I tell them really is when I was doing all that sh*t, nothing good came of it. When I was doing drugs and alcohol, I thought I'll have a drink and a line of this and I'll smoke this. I didn't go, 'Then I'm going to go out and get drunk, come back strangle my wife and wake up in jail on charges of attempted murder,' but that's what happened. I'm not telling people what to do. If they can enjoy doing it and they get on with it and they can handle it fine, but don't involve me. I'm lucky to be alive; you're playing with Russian roulette." It sounds like anybody with a history of addiction will benefit from the wisdom of Dr. Ozzy, but it also sounds like anybody looking for a fun read can enjoy it too! Keep an eye out for Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy: Advice From Rock's Ultimate Survivor because it hits book shelves on October 11th!

Kate Moss' daughter not into fashion Despite Kate Moss being one of the most recognized models out there, her adorable daughter Lila Grace could care less about fashion and even makeup. Turned out that Lila isn't a fan of her mom wearing too much makeup either. “I always take my make-up off, because otherwise my daughter will come in and say "Mummy, tut-tut". She doesn't like it. She likes the fresh-faced, natural mummy, when I've got my hair in a bun and no make-up on.”, Kate revealed. She goes on to add that Lila is “quite prudish”, saying: “She's got lipsticks but she doesn't do colour. She'll only do a little bit of gloss or something - but she is into nail art. She went to Wah Nails for a friend's birthday and came back with green leopardskin. I'm taking her there for her birthday.” Its always like this, the more you have, the more you take for granted. I wish I had a mom like Kate Moss. Yeah, a bit jealous right now!

Beyonce denies fake baby bump rumours We've heard of celebs doing stranger things. However, we didn't expect such odd behaviour from Beyonce. She's been accused of having a fake baby bump. During an interview with Channel 7's Sunday Night, Beyonce's bump appeared to squash as she sat down to be interviewed by Molly Meldrum. Then, as she realised what had happened, she seemed to have a panicked look on her face. The epic moment has been placed on YouTube and is now being talked about world wide. Rumours have since started spinning round, suggesting that Bey is wearing a prosthetic belly to exaggerate her pregnancy. Some are even saying that maybe she's not pregnant at all and a surrogate mother is carrying Bey's unborn child. The singer, understandably, is denying all such claims. Her spokesperson told the media that any speculation over the authenticity of Bey's bump is "stupid, ridiculous and false". During her interview on the Aussie show, Bey also let slip that her baby, who we've named Bey-Z, is due in February 2012.

Scarlett Johansson's phone hacker apologises

The hacker who stole naked pictures of Scarlett Johansson from her phone has apologised. Christopher Chaney, 35, from Florida, who was arrested last week, admitted to stealing pictures from Scarlett and other celebrities including Mila Kunis and Vanessa Hudgens and posting them on the internet, claiming the hacking had started as a "curiosity" but spiralled out of control when he became addicted to it. He told the media: "I deeply apologise. I know what I did was probably one of the worst invasions of privacy someone could experience." Mr. Chaney has been charged with 26 counts of identity theft, unauthorised access to a protected computer and wiretapping and faces up to 121 years in prison if he's convicted. He is currently out on $10,000 bail after promising that he will not use a computer or access the internet.

CAMDEN TOWN Camden is a unique place. It is an island, a proper territory inside the city. The vigor and vibrancy of the place is as if London presenting all its diversity in one of the biggest bazaars on the planet. Its almost as if one has entered another world packed with shops, restaurants, clothes, souvenirs, music, colours and of course every specimen of the human fauna. Brazil is present here in all its cultural aspects but one in particular makes it all special: our culinary. Spicy feijoada with farofa, peixada, muqueca, and tira-gostos like madioquinha frita, torresminho watered by yummy caipirinhas. You better get used to the names. But don't worry! A friendly Brazilian restaurant here will be pleased to enlighten you with the names and serve you all the country's specialities in food, drink and snacks. The restaurant, at Inverness Street in Camden, is aptly called - Made In Brasil and totally lives up to its name especially the warm and friendly atmosphere. The owner of this beautiful and lively place, Mr. Renato and his beautiful wife, Barbara receive and welcome their clientele at their restaurant. Recently, teams from The Brazilian Post and El Iberico were invited to savour their food. We were all delighted by the spread. For starters, we were served madioquinha frita (fried cassava), torresminho (fried pork skin) and a variety of sushi, sashimi and canapĂŠs accompanied by caipirinha (of course). For main course, we were served feijoada which consists of black beans baked with pork sausages and meat (to simplify since it is much more than that) and peixada, a special dish with fish and sea food. All cooked and served perfectly and with excellent live music! Made in Brasil is also known for its famous Brazilian artists. On an evening at Made in Brasil, Supla and his brother JoĂŁo, famous musicians from Brazil, were inspired after a chat with Renato and the duo then started performing as Brothers of Brazil.

TRUE SELF-ESTEEM Do you feel you know-it-all and that you know best? Does that spill over into a know-it-all attitude when you are with others? Do you find that your conversations become one-sided? You may know a lot, only when it becomes a know-it-all attitude it can alienate others and close you down to new possibilities and discoveries. It also puts a lot of pressure on you, constantly having to prove that you are an authority on every topic, even when you are wrong! In contrast take confident people, they are like magnets and they are not afraid of uncertainty. They are knowledgeable rather than 'know-it-all.' They contribute and share what they know and also welcome and encourage other's contributions. They are also not afraid to admit that they don't know something. Think about it, can anyone ever really know-it-all? Take science, for example, many concepts that were once thought of as set in stone have later been found not to be and the same is happening today. Theories are constantly changing. In fact it can be liberating not to have to know-it-all. Here are some exercises you might like to try out. Maybe test them out first on a set of people you are meeting for the first time and make a note of how you feel afterwards. Number one, choose to keep quiet and let others respond even though you know the answer. Number two, ask questions of others and allow them to answer even though you know the answers. This is, in fact, counted as one of the traits of a good leader. Number three, ask others for their specific contribution, know when to ask “What do you think?" You could then try these out with some people you know. It might be that

Aries This week you might have to confront family issues. You want to make your own decisions and it may cause disagreement with an authoritarian figure. It is time to conquer your space, but remember you can do it in a mature way explaining your reasons and being responsible for your actions.

Taurus You're looking for thrill in your life, but it seems difficult to get now. Maybe you are looking for it miles away and forgetting that it is our state of mind that can feed the soul with this feeling. Being present and in the moment can bring you the emotion that you want. Empty your mind and relax your expectations.

Gemini This week you can relax and put your creativity into practice. Whatever you need to do to finish your duties do it because now is the perfect time. Your mind

will be working in a methodical way to sort out everything that you have been procrastinating, and you'll have fun with it. Over the weekend, call the person you have been thinking about.

Cancer The Moon starts in Cancer this week in good aspects, which means you may feel positive about almost all areas in your life. You will have the strength to deal with any issues that come to you now. From Thursday on you may have to act cautiously, especially, in your job to get the results that you want.

Leo It is time to work hard and you might feel the weight of the world on your back. Try to avoid stress and you'll see that things can be solved sooner than you think. From Thursday the Moon will be in Leo, which brings you the sensation of emotional control and relief.

Virgo This week you may want to

be next to people who can bring you the sensation of protection and affection. It is time to enjoy good memories with friends and family. To promote some changes you could redecorate or repaint your space, even buy new furniture. It can make you feel like you are in a different environment.

Libra You are feeling your physical energy coming back after a period of flu and allergy. This is because you are putting your worries to one side and realising that to live means to take risks. From Thursday on you have to deal with unpleasant news, but remember you have just recovered yourself, try not to get too close to other people's issues.

Scorpio This week you might feel emotionally stressed and think about how to overcome the obstacles in your life. It is normal that you feel a bit weird at this time because its like a rebalance to prepare you for your birthday that is com-

you need to try out these exercises a few times with people you know as they may be expecting you to be 'knowit-all' and make a note of how their responses to you change. Now, moving onto the next set of challenges. Number four, start giving due credit to others, such as, 'it was Julie's idea'. This doesn't minimise your contribution rather it begins to create a more co-operative atmosphere. Number five, genuinely acknowledge the successes and achievements of others, even of those you would consider your competitors. What was their response? Number six, take a genuine interest in others and ask them about their holiday, their plans, their greatest insight or their dreams. Last of all, laugh at yourself and your own eccentricities. Start enjoying life and the richness of fellowship created out of sharing what you know and listening to others. Also, merge true self esteem and confidence. If you feel compelled to know-it-all most likely you have somehow equated your self-worth with knowing-it-all, this is very fragile. Start investigating true self-esteem. It isn't based on what you 'know' but on 'knowing'. The best way to do this is to get to know yourself. Ask yourself, 'What is important to me?' 'What are my values?' 'What are my innate qualities?' – a clue here if you are not sure is to check out, 'What qualities do I admire in others?' as the qualities we admire in others are the ones that are hidden within ourselves. True self-esteem creates a feeling of inner security and lessens the need to prove our worth to others. Be knowledgeable. Inner Space, Covent Garden www.innerspace.gov.uk

ing soon. Start giving yourself what you would like to give people; a little bit of tenderness and patience.

Sagittarius What would you like to do this week? Firstly ask yourself what you want instead of blaming your partner or family for your boring life. What is happening around us is always our responsibility. Re-create your reality in order to address the things you have still not achieved. Start with the resources that you have and you'll see life smiling at you again.

Capricorn Your family needs your help, however, you might feel that its too hard to get involved with the issues around them. But remember that their problems are also yours. Don't run away or hide yourself. Face up to things and give them the reassurance that you want things to become as were before. Don't be afraid to deal with the dirt under the rug.

Aquarius Your partner will be over the moon with your romantic approach. This week can be a great opportunity to show your partner or future partner your intentions about the relationship. Give her/him a surprise that expresses your love. You will not regret it. Let the love express itself!

Pisces Have you ever thought that we sometimes make assumptions that are not real? Sometimes we judge people based on our own perceptions of truth. Does each person have the same truth or react to it the same way? Play this question in your mind and you will find it easier to understand other's point of view. At the weekend give yourself time to laugh and to appreciate simple things in life. RF Coaching refornari@gmail.com www.renatafornari.com

World Quake causes panic, injuries in Bali A powerful earthquake jolted the Indonesian island of Bali on last Thursday, injuring dozens of people and causing panic as hundreds of tourists fled violently shaking buildings. The 6.0-magnitude quake rocked the main tourist district of Kuta for several minutes, said Endro Tjahjono from the Bali office of Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. "There was panic, everyone ran out of the buildings. When we returned to our office building, we saw some cracks on the wall and plaster had come off the walls," he said. Kuta's Sunset Road was hit hard, with hundreds of tourists fleeing from malls, restaurants and supermarkets. "Hundreds of people ran onto the streets. It was chaos. So many people tried to drive off that the traffic came to a standstill," said Reno Permana, who works for a mobile phone service and ran from the third floor of his office building when the quake hit. "Part of the wall on the Carrefour supermarket near my building came down, and tiles from the roof fell and smashed into the parking lot. A lot of the buildings are badly damaged, with windows smashed in." Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and is frequently hit by earthquakes. In October 2010 a powerful earthquake triggered a huge tsunami off the coast of Sumatra, northwest of Bali, that killed at least 300 people.

Bhutan king weds commoner bride

The king of the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan married his commoner bride on last Thursday in an ancient Buddhist ceremony at the country's most sacred monastery fortress. King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, wearing the raven crown, came down from his golden throne in front of a huge statue of Buddha to place a smaller, silk brocade crown upon the head of his bride, Jetsun Pema. Monks chanted in celebration as she took her seat beside him as the new queen of the country. The wedding has captivated the nation, which had grown impatient with their 31-year-old bachelor king's lack of urgency to wed. Children composed poems, flight attendants practiced celebratory dances and posters of the couple were nearly ubiquitous. The celebrations began at 8:20am, a time set by royal astrologers, when the king, wearing the royal yellow sash, walked into the courtyard of the 17th century monastery in the old capital of Punakha and proceeded up the high staircase inside. A few minutes later, his 21year-old bride arrived at the end of a procession of redrobed monks and flag bearers across a wooden footbridge over the

wide, blue river beside the fort and followed him inside. She wore a traditional wraparound skirt with a gold jacket with deep red cuffs. Singers chanted songs of celebration amid the clanging of drums and the drone of long dhung trumpets. Inside, the nation's top cleric, who presided over the wedding, performed a purification ceremony for the couple in front of a massive 100-foot Thongdal tapestry of Bhutan's 17th century founder. The pair then proceeded to the temple for a ceremony broadcast live on national television, save for a few minutes when the king, his father, the former ruler, and the cleric entered the sacred tomb of the founder of Bhutan. The king's father gave the bride an array of five colored scarves representing blessings from the tomb. Hesitantly, she then approached the king's throne with a golden chalice filled with the ambrosia of eternal life. They held it together for several seconds and then he drank. He came down from the throne and placed the crown on her head. After she took her place as queen, the newly married couple was feted by monks playing deep tones on traditional trumpets and pounding drums. Wellwishers gave them offerings representing hopes for long life.

Tripoli celebrates as Gaddafi's son captured Celebratory bursts of gunfire and fireworks lit up the skies over Tripoli early on last Thursday as word spread that Libyan government fighters had captured Muammar Gaddafi's son Mo'tassim in Sirte. The capture of the deposed leader's national security adviser, and the first member of the Gaddafi family, is a big boost to Libya's new rulers whose forces are still battling pro-Gaddafi fighters. National Transitional Council (NTC) officials said that Mo'tassim was captured on last Wednesday after he tried to escape the battle-torn city in a car with a family. "He was arrested today in Sirte," Colonel Abdullah Naker, head of the Tripoli Revolutionary Council, said. Other NTC sources said Mo'tassim was taken to Benghazi where he was held and questioned at the Boatneh military camp. He was uninjured but exhausted. As news of the capture spread, hundreds of people gathered in the capital's old city, singing, waving Libya's new flag and shouting "God is greatest". Ships sounded their whistles in the harbour and car drivers honked horns, many with passengers hanging from the windows. Local reports said that several people injured by celebratory gunfire were taken to the hospital. Gaddafi loyalists have fought for weeks in Sirte, one of two major towns where they still have footholds, two months after rebels seized Tripoli. But NTC fighters have made significant advances in Sirte in recent days. On last Wednesday, they said they were fighting pro-Gaddafi fighters in two small areas.

China against Israel apologises for US bill to Egypt border deaths punish it on currency The Chinese government said on last Wednesday that the US Senate was trying to disrupt the recovery of world economy by passing a bill that will punish China for keeping its currency artificially low. The central bank in Beijing expressed its opposition to the bill by pushing the local currency lower defying Washington's efforts to push the Yuan upwards. This was a reaction to a move by the US Senate passing a bill that would punish countries that subsidize their exports by maintaining an artificially low exchange rate. It is clear China has lost the first round in what became a severe test of its influence over the political and trade fields in the US. Beijing is now trying to make a desperate attempt to get the US House of Representatives and president Barack Obama to block the bill. The bill "will not solve US economic and employment problems and will only disturb efforts to promote world economic recovery," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxuin said. China is expected to use both carrot and stick methods to have its say in Washington, but it is not yet saying what steps will be taken to achieve it. The move has sent the wrong signal in escalating trade protectionism, said Shen Danyang, spokesperson for the Chinese commerce ministry said. The US Senate has reversed world efforts to curb trade protectionism by using domestic legislation that seeks to threaten to punish China for its alleged currency manipulation, he said. The Chinese central bank on Wednesday guided its currency 0.5 percent below its daily reference rate, the maximum devaluation possible in one day. It said the Yuan "is gradually approaching a reasonable and balanced level." The bank has strengthened the yuan by 30 percent since 2005, but this has not prevented the US trade deficit with China from widening, it said.

Train collision in California injures 16 Two passenger trains collided at a station in California, injuring at least 16 people, officials said on last Thursday. One of the trains was stopped and unloading passengers at Amtrak's Oakland station when the second train ran into it at a speed of up to 20 mph late Wednesday, Oakland Fire Department battalion chief Emon Usher said. Usher says most of the injuries were minor, but that several people were taken to local hospitals. Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole described the crash as a "low speed" collision between Amtrak's "San Joaquin", a train that operates between Bakersfield to Oakland, and the Coast Starlight, a train from Los Angeles to Seattle. He said the wheels of each lead engine went off the track. Alton Smith, a passenger on one of the trains, told media sources that he felt "an awful jolt" from the impact. All train traffic was temporarily suspended at the station.

Israel has apologised to Egypt for the border killings of six policemen in August that sparked a diplomatic crisis between the two neighbours, Egypt's foreign ministry said on last Wednesday. The policemen were killed on August 18, as Israeli troops hunted down militants who had carried out deadly attacks near the border with Israel. Their deaths prompted infuriated protesters to storm Israel's embassy in Cairo, forcing the ambassador to leave the country. "Egypt has indeed received an official message from Israel's defence ministry in which Israel apologises and expresses deep remorse," a statement quoted Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr as saying. The statement said that the apology had satisfied an Egyptian demand. Late on last Tuesday, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barack said his government, which had already

expressed regret for the deaths, would be willing to apologise. "Based on the findings of the investigation, Barak decided to apologise to the Egyptians over the death of every Egyptian policeman in the line of duty as the result of Israeli fire," an Israeli statement said. The announcement came as Egypt helped mediate an elusive prisoner swap between Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement that controls Gaza and has held a captured Israeli soldier since 2006. Israel will release more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including militants it had refused to set free, in exchange for the soldier, Gilad Shalit. Egypt, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, has grown more assertive with its neighbour since a popular revolt ousted president Hosni Mubarak in February, leaving the military in control.

Berlusconi wins key confidence vote Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi crowed on Saturday about defeating a "bureaucratic coup" in the form of a confidence vote and said he was sure he would see out his mandate until 2013. "They tried a bureaucratic coup but we remained cohesive and we rebuffed the attack," Berlusconi said in a phone-in on television chat show Studio Aperto on one of the channels owned by his business empire. "This opposition is in disarray and it will take them a long time to become credible," he said, adding: "I am calm and determined. We have the numbers to govern and we will continue until the end of the legislature." Berlusconi's centre-right coalition on last Friday won the confidence vote with 316 votes in favour and 301 against, but commentators said the victory was unlikely to reassure financial markets or put an end to calls for him to resign. The prime minister's popularity is at a record low and he is coming under ever greater pressure from three trials in which he is accused of bribery, tax fraud, abuse of power and having sex for money with a 17year-old girl. There are also growing signs of infighting within the government

Philippine hostage stand-off ends safely Armed robbers in the Philippines who held 8 people hostage at a bank, released all their captives unharmed and surrendered after a stand-off lasting more than two hours, authorities said. Four gunmen were robbing the bank in Bacoor city, just outside the Philippine capital, when responding policemen arrived. The gunmen then seized eight bank workers, national police spokesman Agrimero Cruz said. They initially set free one of the hostages who had a health problem, then released all the others unharmed shortly before 3:00pm (0700 GMT), Bacoor Mayor Strike Revilla said on television. "They have all come out and they have released all their hostages," Revilla said. "We had negotiations and the robbers were OK. They were calm and our negotiations had the right result."

25 killed in blasts in Iraq A slew of bombings targeted Iraqi police in Baghdad on last Wednesday morning, including blasts by two suicide bombers who tried to ram their vehicles through police station gates. Iraqi officials said 25 people died and dozens more were wounded. The blasts were aimed at the police, considered the weakest section of Iraq's security forces, and emphasized that despite security gains, long-term stability in the country is still elusive. US forces are scheduled to leave by the end of 2011. The attack is likely to add to concerns about the ability of Iraqi security forces to effectively secure the city.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in London In Japanese, “jiu”means gentleness, lightness, and “jitsu” means art, technique. Although having its origins in India, the sport is a Japanese martial art, which was once reserved for Japanese emperors and later brought to Brazil where it was refined. A fighting technique that uses the “lever” method, Jiu Jitsu teaches its fighters to immobilise the opponent. To the Contrary to the myth of violence surrounding this sport, the movements are well thought out, defensive and

applied with a “gentle art”. Jiu-jitsu teaches the fighter to immobilise their opponent without the need to come to blows. Working on concentration and self defence plays a fundamental role in bringing balance to the sport. “When someone wants to join a jiu-jitsu gym, they will have this desire to fight. With the work that we do in jiu-jitsu, that mindset begins to change and whoever practises jiu-jitsu ends up becoming much more tolerant and peaceful,” explains Nilton Garcia the master of the BJJ Gracie Garcia Gym in Camden Town and who is a black belt, as well as World Jiu- Jitsu Champion 2005 and South American Jiu-Jitsu Champion 2006. In order to attain a black belt, the final belt, the fighter needs to pass 11 levels. Apart from technique, his behaviour is also evaluated when the athlete is going on to the next belt. “The relationship with his colleagues and his work ethic in the gym are relevant and decisive factors when the teacher evaluates his pupil. The process is different for everyone, each athlete has his own time,” Nilton explains.

Self-defense With the technique of self-defence a prominent part of Jiu-Jitsu, the pupil learns how to defend himself from unanticipated strikes and traumatic situations as well as immobilising the aggressor whilst not hurting them or themselves. Nilton points out that the pupil becomes more balanced and self-confident. Nilton has been practising the sport for over 20 years, and says that there is an intrinsic link between Jiu-Jitsu and life itself. “It's a martial art that is so beautiful, if you get hold of a good instructor, you end up discovering things about life, things that you will only see within JiuJitsu, which is a game of chess. You have to stop in order think and, automatically, even about things pertaining to your life”, he reflects.

Introductory lesson The Brazilian Post participated in a demonstrative lesson at the Grace Garcia Gym. Our sub editor, Ana Toledo, got stuck in and learnt a few self-defence techniques. “I had never taken part in a Jiu-Jitsu class before, and when I heard that size was not important when toppling an opponent I thought that was impossible. When I began the training it consisted of the basics of the sport: warming up, jogging. In self-defence exercises you already know a few basic precautions so as to avoid dangerous situations; how to carry your handbag for example. The defence positions also show that brute force is not a decisive factor. The methods can be executed by anyone and the simulated situations allow you to understand how to act when under attack. You also realise that to use what you have learnt, concentration is a fundamental part of it all and this comes with time and training. It's definitely worth it!

Euro Crisis Beginning or End? cholanda@brazilianpost.co.uk

SPEED NEWS: Google profits, revenue surge in 3rd quarter

The search engine said net income in the third quarter surged 26% to $2.73bn (£1.74bn), up from $2.17bn in the same period last year. Earlier this year, Google launched Google+, a social network to take on Facebook.

Let us rejoice! They get it. Well, some of them get bits of it. It's a start. To judge by European Commission President José Manuel Barroso's speech last Wednesday, preparations for a wholesale recapitalization of Europe's banks look well advanced. After months of drift and paralysis, policy makers appear to be quickening their pace to something more in keeping with events. The likelihood is still, on balance, that this is an exceptional situation that will be remedied by some political and institutional adjustments, not the beginning of the Book of Revelation. Mr. Barroso was right to present bank recapitalization as only part of the solution to Europe's ills. Without a lasting fix for the Greek problem, a properly expanded and functioning lender of last resort, better institutional governance of the euro area and credible policies for growth and budget consolidation at national level, bank recapitalization will achieve next to nothing. But without a recapitalization process, and more help from the European Central Bank to ease bank funding costs, it looks impossible for Europe to avoid recession, a credit crunch and a tipping point beyond which lie economic depression and the disintegration of the single currency, the single market and quite

UK trade deficit cut by higher exports The overall deficit for goods and services was £1.9bn in August, compared with £2.3bn in July. Total exports of goods hit £25.5bn, following a 0.6% rise, while imports of goods declined by 0.7% to £33.3bn. Analysts said the stronger exports may boost the economic growth figures for the July to September quarter. The UK's surplus on trade in services remained at £5.9bn, with both exports and imports rising by 0.3%. The deficit on trade in goods narrowed by £400m to £7.8bn. Economist Alan Clarke of Scotia Capital said: "At face value it does look like very good news. "I guess the health warning with this release, along with a lot of the other ones we've been getting, is the revisions to the historical data. "Even so, it's a decent improvement on the month and may yet help to give us a decent third quarter GDP." Howard Archer, chief UK economist at IHS Global Insight, said the August figures were "appreciably better than expected". "However, severe concerns persist about the prospects for exports in the near term, at least given recent weakened global economic activity and the current worrying growth prospects," he added. The latest trade figures come a week after the Bank of England announced that it would inject a further £75bn of new money into the UK economy through another round of quantitative easing. Barclays Corporate analyst Kah Chye Tan said the move could help exporters by putting downward pressure on the pound. However, he added: "While this is good news for UK exporters, importers will be feeling the brunt of an increase in the cost of raw materials and finished goods."

possibly the European Union itself. So, as I said, let us rejoice. Recapitalization provides the simplest opportunity for Europe to show that it can act decisively and successfully when it finally gets around to it. The other elements of the solution, though far more advanced now than at the start of the year, are still too much a hostage to the political process. What will recapitalization look like? It will start with a stress test, but with crucial differences: first, banks will have to account "prudently" for their sovereign exposure; second, the pass/fail threshold must be far higher than the European Banking Authority's arbitrary threshold of 5% in this year's formal stress tests. Mr. Barroso told the European Parliament banks will have to show "temporary significantly higher ratios of the highest-quality capital after accounting for exposure," using a definition of capital "broadly equivalent" to that enshrined in Basel III. So far, so good, so much more credible, and spoilt only slightly by the blandishment that those that fail should present plans for recapitalization "as swiftly as possible." Obviously, there's no agreement yet on what that means, but the year's grace that the failures got in July looks likely to be sharply curtailed.

Bank of England injects further £75bn into economy

The Bank has already pumped £200bn into the economy by buying assets such as government bonds, in an attempt to boost lending by commercial banks. But this is the first time it has added to its QE programmed since 2009. There have been recent calls for it to step in again to aid the fragile recovery. The Bank also held interest rates at the record low of 0.5%. On last Wednesday, data showed the UK economy grew by 0.1% between April and June, which was less than previously thought. "In the United Kingdom, the path of output has been affected by a number of temporary factors, but the available indicators suggest that the underlying rate of growth has also moderated," the Bank said in a statement. "The deterioration in the outlook has made it more likely that inflation will undershoot the 2% target in the medium term. "In the light of that shift in the balance of risks, and in order to keep inflation on track to meet the target over the medium term, the committee judged that it was necessary to inject further monetary stimulus into the economy." Sterling fell by almost two cents after the announcement to $1.5280, its lowest since late July 2010. The CBI and the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) business groups welcomed the Bank's move to expand the QE programme to £275bn, but said that on its own, its impact would be limited. "This measure will help support confidence, but we need to recognise that its impact on near term growth prospects is likely to be relatively modest," said Ian McCafferty, the CBI's chief economic adviser. "Only once the turmoil in the eurozone is resolved will confidence be fully restored." David Kern, an economist, said: "Higher QE on its own is not enough and we urge the MPC [Monetary Policy Committee] to look at other radical methods.

More cash machines stock fivers

An increasing number of cash machines are dispensing £5 notes, the body that oversees the UK network has said. Some 3,954 cash machines are loaded with fivers compared with 670 in 2009, the Link network said. However, this remains a small proportion of the 63,000 machines in operation in the country. The Bank of England has been working with operators to increase the frequency of the smallest denomination notes. The 10 largest cash machine operators have committed to increase the frequency of fivers in place of higher denomination notes. About 10% to 15% of their machines are being altered to dispense £5 notes. The Bank of England is trying to improve the quality and availability of £5 notes.

Many £5 notes have become grubby and torn, because they change hands more frequently and do not return for sorting as much as other notes. More than 70% of banknotes initially reach the public via the UK's cash machines, from which £20 notes dominate. "The committee's strong support for the expansion of the number of £5 note dispensing cash machines has helped to deliver an excellent result and help make cash even more convenient to consumers as part of their day-today lives," said Link chairman Ken Andrew. Ron Delnevo, managing director of operator Bank Machine, said: "The UK public knows that the fiver is the most practical of notes and is a handy budgeting tool in good times and bad."

Virgin and IAG in race to buy Lufthansa's BMI Virgin Atlantic is vying with British Airways' IAG in the race to buy their smaller rival BMI, as its parent – the German airline Lufthansa – studies options for the loss-making business. Virgin said it was in discussions with Lufthansa and expressed concern about the possibility of BMI falling in to the hands of IAG, which has also approached the German carrier. " Although loss making, BMI has lucrative assets in the form of flight slots at London's Heathrow; it controls about 10 per cent of the airport's take-off and landing slots, which were estimated to be worth around £400m by Citigroup analysts last month. British Airways is the only airline with a bigger share, controlling around 44 per cent of the slots at Heathrow. With the 1 per cent controlled by its sister carrier Iberia, IAG is the dominant airline group at the airport. Eyeing the potential competition hurdles faced by IAG, Virgin Atlantic, which is majority-owned by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, also confirmed that it was talking to regulators. IAG's chief executive, Willie Walsh, has made no secret of his interest in taking over BMI. Speaking in Dublin earlier in the week, he said that BMI and the Portuguese carrier TAP were "the only two actively interested at this stage".

MESSI - on the way to the top

In a list of the world's best footballers, names like Pelé, Diego Maradona, Franz-Beckenbauer, Zinedine Zidane, Romário, Bobby Charlton and Ronaldo will always figure but should Lionel Messi be on that list? I did not see Pelé showing his magical talent and I've just caught the last moments of Diego Maradona's but I can perfectly remember Romário, Ronaldo and Zidane's perfomances and can say for sure that those three deserve their place in the Hall of Fame; but Lionel Messi, I still don't Know. Messi is an amazing footballer and he is the most talented and consistent player I have seen in the last 15 years. He knows how to pass, to score and how to give a show but even with all these qualities he is not in my Top 10 list although he is very close. So what is missing? The first requirement to be in that list is to win a World Cup and Messi hasn't won one yet but he is only 24 and has at least 3 more chances to reach this objective. The second requirement is to become stronger and I am not talking about physical power here, I am talking about personality because all the best players in my list were not just fantastic players but brought their personalities to the field and sometimes that makes the difference between a star and a normal player. Lionel Messi is very close to making history in football and he has the potential not just to be in the list of the best players ever but to be at the top of that list.

World cup through the years - A flashback The 1950 World Cup in Brazil was the first to include British participants. British teams withdrew from FIFA in 1920, partly out of their unwillingness to play against the countries they had been at war with, and partly as a protest against a foreign influence to football but rejoined in 1946 following FIFA's invitation. However, England's involvement was not to be a success. The English failed to make the final group round in a campaign that included a 1-0 loss to the United States (they would not be in World Cup finals until 1966) though initial news reports, thinking that the 1-0 score was a typing error, said that England won 10-0. The tournament also saw the return of 1930's champions Uruguay, who had boycotted the previous two World Cups. For political reasons, Eastern European countries (such as Hungary, the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia) did not enter. Title-holder Italy did take part, despite the Superga air disaster of 1949 in which the entire Grande Torino team (many who were national team players) were killed. The 1950 World Cup was the only tournament not to stage a final tie, replacing knockout rounds with two group phases. However, the final match of the second group phase was in effect a final, as the group standings meant the winners would be crowned champions. Uruguay was the surprise winner over hosts Brazil and became champions for the second time.

Brazil's Pan-Am dreams

Top world ranked Brazil is fielding its best team with all the intentions of winning the gold medal of the women's tournament of the Pan American Games, the only missing title for the current generation of Brazilian players. Four years ago, while playing at home in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was upset by Cuba in the match for the gold medal and now the Brazilian players are hungry for victory. The eight-team competition begun last Saturday with sides divided into two pools and the pool winners advanced directly to the semifinal phase. “We are here with the best team we have at the moment. The Pan American Games are very important for this generation of players since they will try to win their first Pan Am Games. We will attempt to reach the finals and then will attempt to win the gold medal. The decision will take place on the court. The tournament also serves as preparation for the World Cup which is the first qualifier to the next Olympic Games,” Brazil's Coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes said.

Sonnen declares war against Silva WEC middleweight have warned UFC middleweight champion, Anderson “The Spider” Silva that when the two promotions finally merge he doesn't expect to just make up the numbers and will be coming for one thing, the middleweight title. In an interview with Cage Potato, Sonnen fired the first shot in what he expects to be a war: “I'm not going to the UFC with a white flag. My flag is red, I'm declaring war. It's always like that, all fighters when they grab the microphone say the same thing, they challenge every fighter in the world, except Anderson Silva. A lot of folks don't have what it takes, before even fighting they're already yellow. I'm not going to do that, it would be really disappointing for my fans. I'm the only fighter who wants to fight him, and the only one who has what it takes to beat him. When I get to the UFC and they give me the microphone, his is the name I'll call out. I don't think he's as good as everyone says. He's a really good

fighter, sometimes fantastic, and he really deserves to be a champion. But I can surely beat him, and who knows he might beat me too. Anything can happen. But the risk he runs is the same as I do. I'm trying to find out who the real champion is. I noticed that every time they interviewed Anderson and asked him if he'd fight Paulo Filho, he'd always avoid the subject. And Paulo Filho would do the same. I heard a lot of people say Paulo Filho is a better fighter than Anderson Silva. So let's think about it: if I can beat Paulo Filho, I can surely beat Anderson Silva too.” Sonnen defeated Silva's training partner and close friiend, Paulo Filho at WEC 36 in what was a less than entertaining affair. You have to applaud his attitude towards a possible meeting with the man widely considered as the best fighter in the world, afterall, there's no point in stepping up if you've already convinced yourself you won't win.
