BRAZIL: WORLD'S 21ST CENTURY BREADBASKET? Brazil's former President Lula has been awarded the 'World Food Prize' which is just the right indicator of the emerging might of Brazil in the world food market. Lula received the prize because of his commitment to the creation and implementation of policies to alleviate hunger and poverty in Brazil. Meanwhile, Brazil as a nation has traveled a long distance and today has emerged as a key producer of food grains and meat and is all set to emerge as the World's bread basket in the 21st century.

From breakfast food to bread basket

Brazil has for centuries been known as a leading producer and exporter of the world's breakfast foods -- orange juice, coffee, sugar and cocoa. But over the past two and a half decades since the opening of the economy to foreign investment, Latin America's largest economy has also become a leading producer of important grains and meats, through investments in technology and land. Brazilian exports are booming, creating a new generation of tycoons. The country has been expanding its presence in international financial and commodities markets, and is one of a group of four emerging economies called the BRIC countries.

Brazil's main agricultural products and exports are:

exporter and someday, will likely overtake the United States as the leading producer of the oilseed.

ORANGE JUICE: As the world's largest producer and exporter of orange juice, it accounts for roughly one in every two glasses of orange juice consumed in the world today.

BEEF:

SUGAR: As the world's largest producer and exporter of the sweetener, it's expected to produce a record 40.9 million tonnes of sugar from cane this season and dominate half the world's sugar market.

COFFEE: As the world's largest producer and exporter, it produces between 35 mil-

Until recently it has been only a marginal corn exporter but in the past several years, Brazil has exported around 7 to 11 million tonnes a year, making it the No. 3 world exporter of the grain.

TOBACCO: Brazil is the world's largest producer of tobacco, cultivation of which is concentrated in the southern growing states.

COTTON:

Brazil has the world's largest commercial cattle herd of around 200 million head. Although it consumes about 80 percent of its beef at home, Brazil still manages to be the largest exporter of beef. Its beef is best suited for tropical climates and most of the herd is grass-fed.

With a fast expanding grain belt, Brazil has leveraged its corn and soy production to become the world's largest exporter of poultry meat and a fast growing exporter of pork.

With abundant rain, sun and land inside the tropics, Brazil - as with

Brazil was only a marginal producer of cotton but burst into prominence this year jumping into the No. 4 slot of world exporters of the fibre. Brazil produces close to 2 million tonnes of high grade long fibre cotton lint.

ETHANOL: Brazil is typically the world's largest exporter of cane-based ethanol, shipping around 3 billion litres a year. This pales in comparison with the 28 billion litres that it produces annually for the domestic flex-fuel car fleet.

The big picture: Brazil, in the last 12 months, has finally become recognised as a “ justified” BRIC as its economy has recovered easily from the global crisis, something that initially surprised many observers. And the key is, the more time creeps by and the longer Brazil keeps inflation low and stable, the more this young dynamic population will feel comfortable in planning for the future, and develop typical consumption and investment habits. These are new phenomena for Brazil, which from 1970 to 2000 faced 30 years of persistent crisis and turmoil, of which hyper inflation was front and centre. Those days might be behind Brazil, and perhaps the country can finally demonstrate it is a country for today and for the future.

Clegg announces Eight 'drug dealers' £2.5bn Brazil deals die in Rio raid

Business deals with Brazil totaling £2.5 billion have been agreed this year, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced during a visit to Brazil. The Liberal Democrat leader said trade links with the fast-growing economy will provide a “significant boost” to British jobs and growth. Among the deals announced are a £130 million contract for BT to provide data transmission services for the Brazilian post office and the UK Government underwriting a £185 million credit line to steel company Gerdau which should lead to more than £270 million in exports to Brazil from 79 British companies. Mr Clegg, who is heading a trade delegation of ministers and business leaders, also announced enhanced co-operation on science and higher education, including a contract signed by Trimega Labs to test hair samples for the Brazilian police in Manchester. Speaking in Brasilia, Mr Clegg said: “Trade equals jobs, and that is what the people of the UK want, and the people of Brazil too. I'm delighted that, over these two days, we are sealing business links worth over £2.5 billion that will be a significant boost to the UK economy.” Mr Clegg said the upcoming football World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 represent “significant” opportunities for British firms. He opened an Olympic conference to help Brazil learn from London's experience of preparing for the 2012 Games. The Deputy PM also announced schemes by UK Research Councils to boost joint research in the areas of food security, bioenergy and industrial biotechnology.

James Cameron warns of violence over Brazil dam

Oscar-winning movie director James Cameron on last Thursday said tribes in Brazil's Amazon rainforest could turn to violence to block construction of a massive dam. "The Kayapo are going to fight," Cameron said in Washington, where he was named an explorer-in-residence at National Geographic. "They're not going to just shrug and walk away. They're the most aggressive tribe in the area" of the Xingu River basin, where the Brazilian government is forging ahead with plans to build the $11 billion Belo Monte dam, in spite of locals repeatedly lodging protests against the project. "The Brazilian government is not listening to the indigenous community at all," Cameron said. "They're determined to build this dam, which is going to be the third largest and probably the most inefficient dam in the world," said the director of Avatar, which tells the story of how the peaceful Na'Vi people are forced to fight against strip-miners from Earth intent on destroying Na'Vi culture on the planet Pandora, to get their hands on a precious mineral resource, unobtainium. Since he finished working on Avatar, Cameron has made three trips to the region in the Amazon where the dam is to be built. The Brazilian government argues that the dam is necessary to meet Brazil's growing energy needs and to drive strong economic growth, which is raising the standard of living for most Brazilians. "They could easily solve their energy requirements through efficiency initiatives for a fraction of the cost of building the dam, and they wouldn't have to destroy so much rainforest and displace 25,000 indigenous people," Cameron said.

Police in Rio de Janeiro say eight suspected drug traffickers have been killed during a raid in a slum area. The group died in two separate exchanges of gunfire - lasting several hours - in the Engenho da Rainha neighbourhood, military police said. Police said they later discovered rifles, pistols and grenades. The police have targeted a number of slums recently as they attempt to clear high-crime areas ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. The operation started on last Wednesday night, when Rio's Special Operations Battalion (the Bope) entered the Engenho da Rainha favela looking for suspected drug traffickers. An intense firefight ensued between police and alleged gang members, and gunfire shook the neighbourhood until dawn on last Thursday. Police say the first confrontation started on the Guarabu Road just before midnight, when three suspected drug traffickers were killed. According to Rio's military police, a short time later officers were fired on from another part of the favela. Five suspected traffickers were killed in the second exchange. A local resident was also injured when he was caught in the crossfire. Police said they confiscated two rifles, ammunition, three pistols, two grenades, and a quantity of drugs during the operation. Rio de Janeiro has long been considered one of the most violent cities in Brazil, but analysts say that among the country's urban areas it has seen the biggest fall in criminal activity in recent months.

FIFA worried by Brazil WCup preparations FIFA remains concerned at the slow pace of Brazil's preparations for the 2014 World Cup, saying soccer officials in South America appear to have invested more energy in winning the tournament than organizing it. "We don't have stadiums, we don't have airports," secretary general Jerome Valcke said on last Friday at the Inside World Football forum in Moscow. He added it looked increasingly likely that some facilities, including Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracana, would be ready with only a few weeks to spare. Brazilian lawmakers this month were forced to approve a raft of measures aimed at reducing the paperwork needed to clear various infrastructure projects. The changes reduce the time to conclude the bidding processes on tenders, eliminating some stages and need for approval. Saint-Clair Milesi, a spokesman for the local World Cup organizing committee, said from Brazil that with the exception of Sao Paulo, the construction of new stadiums and renovation of existing ones is "continuing according to schedule." Ricardo Leyser, a top official with Brazil's Sports Ministry, told media that "it is obvious that Brazil will be ready on time to host the World Cup.""We have no doubt that all the work being done to prepare the country to host the games will be concluded on time," Leyser said.

Brazilian gov't websites hacked The websites of the Brazilian government became the latest victims of a string of hacker attacks. Statistics agency IBGE's homepage was replaced by an image file and a warning that this month Brazil would be the target of the worst hacker attacks in its history. The culprit, a group called Fireh4ck3r, claimed the attacks were a form of protest of a nationalist group to make Brazil "a better country." The group said there was no place for groups "without any ideology," such as LulzSec in Brazil, a group that had targeted some governmental websites earlier last week. The series of attacks is unprecedented, and the IBGE and the Cultural Ministry are only the latest in a series of federal websites targeted by several hacker

groups. The attacks started a fortnight ago, when a group called Fatal Error Crew broke into the Brazilian Army website and leaked personal data over 1,000 personnel. The group also made the presidency's website a target in early January. On last Wednesday, hackers from the LulzSecBrasil group targeted the presidency's site, as well as a portal providing general information on Brazil and the Federal Revenues Secretariat page. However, government data processing organ Serpro stated that the attacks were unsuccessful and the hackers did not manage to get access to any data. Later that day, Brazil's statecontrolled oil and gas giant Petrobras was invaded, with LulzSecBrazil claiming responsibility for the attack.

Colombia and Brazil tighten border defense The Colombian and Brazilian governments are working together to beef up security along the Amazon border to prevent drug trafficking, officials said. The defense ministers of Brazil and Colombia announced plans to prevent criminals from operating in the jungle border area. Brazilian Defense Minister Barsil Nelson Jobim said Brazil will increase the number of soldiers stationed on the border in the coming years. "We have a very important natural asset on the border and we must develop a strategy for cooperation among all countries in the subcontinent," said Jobim. Both defense ministers discussed joint strategies to eliminate drug laboratories and cocaine refineries by developing a satellite surveillance system for the border. Jobim said he is hoping for a cooperative policy with other cocaine-producing countries such as Bolivia and Peru.

Queen, Prince in rare visit to PM Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip paid a rare visit last Tuesday to Prime Minister David Cameron's official residence for a lunch to celebrate the prince's 90th birthday. The red carpet was rolled out at Number 10 Downing Street in London, with the Conservative leader and his wife Samantha greeting the royal couple as they arrived for their first visit to the prime ministerial home since 2002. Samantha Cameron, dressed in a white dress with green belt, curtseyed as she shook hands with the queen and Philip. The queen was wearing a green jacket and white gloves. There was a brief moment of confusion over the order they should stand in for the photocall, but the Camerons guided Philip to the end of the line. Cameron led the group into Number 10, where lunch began with starters of Stilton cheese and watercress tart followed by Inverurie beef from Aberdeenshire in northeast Scotland. For dessert they had peaches and nectarines with ice cream. Philip, the longest-serving consort in British history, turned 90 on June 10 and spent his birthday with a typical lack of fuss, hosting a charity reception and chairing a conference for military colonels. On the prince's birthday, Cameron paid tribute to him as "a man who has given his time and effort and passion to so many great causes up and down the country, across the Commonwealth and indeed the world."

Picassos sell for £42 million at London sale

Three works by Pablo Picasso, each depicting a different one of the Spanish artist's lovers, sold at a London auctionfor a total of 42 million pounds, smashing preauction valuations. A 1939 portrait of Dora Maar, who became Picasso's lover and inspiration after long-time muse Marie-Therese Walter, sold for £17,961,250 ($29 million, 20.2 million euros) at Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale. "Femme assise, robe bleue", which was painted shortly after the outbreak of World War II, had been unseen since it was exhibited in Switzerland 1967 and had been expected to realize between £4 million and £8 million. 1935 work "Jeune fille endormie", an intimate portrait of the artist's former lover MarieTherese, fetched £13.5 million, easily surpassing its £9 million valuation. The 45-year-old Picasso met his mistress, who was 17 at the time, when she was leaving the Paris subway in 1927. The painting shows MarieTherese asleep and is celebrated for its use of bold, expressionist colours and brush strokes. It was anonymously donated to the University of Sydney in 2010 and proceeds from the sale will be channelled into the institution's scientific research

programmes. Giovanna Bertazzoni, Director and Head of Impressionist and Modern Art at Christie's London, said: "It is an absolute jewel of painting that has been unseen, hidden in a private collection, for over 60 years. "It has been hugely exciting to exhibit this painting to the public in Hong Kong and London over recent months, where it has attracted great praise, and to see it attract such strong interest from collectors at this evening's auction." Michael Spence, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney said the sale would "change the lives of many people. "We are grateful for their extraordinary generosity and delighted with the outcome of the auction," he added. Thirdly, "Buste de Francoise", a portrait of Francoise Gilot, eventually sold for £10,681,250. The 1946 piece depicts the woman who became Picasso's lover in the 1940s and bore two of his children. However, the piece which held highest expectations going into Tuesday's auction failed to sell. Claude Monet's "Ninfeas" was expected to fetch around £24 million but failed to reach its reserve price, the auction house revealed. Despite the highprofile no-sale, the auction raised £140 million.

Cameron welcomes Teen Brit hacker U.S. troop reduction in 'could face US Afghanistan extradition'‎ British Prime Minister David Cameron on last Thursday welcomed the U.S. decision to withdraw 10,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year. U.S. President Barack Obama announced the withdrawal last Wednesday night, saying a further 23,000 would leave by the end of September 2012. There are currently around 90,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Responding to the announcement, Cameron said: "I have spoken with President Obama and welcome his announcement to draw down the U.S. troop surge from Afghanistan." He said the surge by the U.S. and international partners, supported by an increase in the number of Afghan army and police, had reversed the momentum of the insurgency and created the right conditions to start transfering responsibility for security to the Afghans from July. "We will keep UK force levels in Afghanistan under constant review. I have already said there will be no UK troops in combat roles in Afghanistan by 2015 and, where conditions on the ground allow, it is right that we bring troops home sooner," Cameron said. "We remain side by side with Afghanistan and our international partners to achieve a military and political solution in Afghanistan that will allow the Afghan people take full responsibility for their own sovereignty and national security," he said.

Call to ban wild animals from Brit circuses Wild animals could be banned from circuses in Britain if a crossparty alliance of MPs succeeds with a call on last Thursday for government action. MPs will vote on a motion brought forward by backbenchers from the three main parties proposing a ban. The campaign to stop the use of animals has gathered momentum, with an open letter by a group of celebrities to the Prime Minister on last Wednesday urging the government to act. The vote on the backbench motion will not be binding on the government, but if passed will put extra pressure on ministers. Agriculture Minister Jim Paice has so far ruled out an outright ban on wild animals in circuses, partly because the government fears being sued by circus owners using human rights laws. The open letter to David Cameron was organised by campaign group Animal Defenders International (ADI) and signed by high-profile names, including actor Brian Blessed, comic Ricky Gervais and Queen guitarist Brian May. It said a system of stricter regulations favoured by ministers would not be effective in protecting circus animals. "The coalition government's decision is completely at odds with public and parliamentary will," it says. "Every legal obstacle that the government has recently put forward has now been knocked down." ADI says it has received legal advice that an outright ban on the use of wild animals would not breach the Human Rights Act or the EU Services Directive. X Factor diva Leona Lewis has also joined the fight, writing a letter to her MP Diane Abbott (Hackney North and Stoke Newington). She said: "I am shocked and outraged that there needs to be a debate about whether it is OK for wild animals to perform tricks in the big top."

British police working with the FBI arrested a 19-year-old man over attacks by a hacker group on businesses and government agencies including the CIA, US Senate and Sony, Scotland Yard said. The man, named in reports as Ryan Cleary, was detained on last Monday at a house in the town of Wickford in Essex, southeast England, in connection with a month-long global rampage by the Lulz Security group. He was being questioned last Tuesday at a central London police station. "Yes, the arrest is in connection with the Lulz Security attacks. We believe this to be a significant arrest," a police source said. But the group played down the arrest in a posting on its official Twitter account. It has announced previous hacking attacks on the same account that turned out to be genuine. “Seems the glorious leader of LulzSec got arrested, it's all over now... wait... we're all still here! Which poor bastard did they take down," said the posting. In a statement, Scotland Yard said its specialist cyber-crime team had arrested the man in a "pre-planned intelligence-led operation". "The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service attacks against a number of international businesses and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group," it said.

Harry Potter set to go digital Author JK Rowling has announced that her seven Potter novels will be sold as e-books starting in October -- ending the boy wizard's status as one of the highestprofile holdouts against digital publishing. The magical stories that conquered the world in print form will be available as audiobooks and e-books in multiple languages through a new website, "Pottermore." Rowling also has written 18,000 words of new Potter material for the interactive site, which promises to immerse users in her world of wizards, combining elements of computer games, social networking and an online store. Rowling says the site includes "information I have been hoarding for years" about the books' characters and settings. "Pottermore" has been the subject of intense speculation among Potter fans since it appeared on the Internet with the words "coming soon." The project unveiled in London lets Potter fans delve into the world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sections let users shop for wands in Diagon Alley, travel to Hogwarts from the imaginary Platform 9 3/4 at London's King's Cross train station and be sorted into Hogwarts school houses by the perceptive Sorting Hat. Along the way are wand fights, games and new information about characters beloved around the world, including Harry's reviled relatives, the Dursleys. The site goes live July 31, when 1 million registered users will

be chosen to help flesh out the online world. It will be open to all users from October, in languages including English, French, German and Spanish. "(It's) a way I can be creative in a medium that didn't exist when I started the books back in 1990," Rowling told reporters, a way to incorporate the thousands of "stories, drawings, ideas, suggestions" she still receives from fans, four years after the last Potter book was published. Harry Potter fans who have been sharing enthusiasm and stories online for years should be delighted by the new digital world. But Rowling said she wanted to keep the emphasis of the site firmly on the written word. “We've had a lot of requests for online games," she said. "I wanted to pull it back to reading." The seven Harry Potter novels have sold more than 450 million copies and made Rowling one of the world's richest women. The last book, " Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," was published in 2007, and Rowling said she still has no plans to write an eighth. But she said Pottermore was a way to reconnect with a character and a universe she loved. "It is exactly like an exboyfriend," Rowling said. "Finishing writing Harry -- I have only ever cried in that way and that much when my mother died. I have never cried for a man the way I cried for Harry Potter." The latest Warner Bros film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," has its world premiere in London on July 7.

Police chief attacks system after Bellfield trial The police chief in charge of the Milly Dowler murder investigation said he was shocked with the justice system that allowed the privacy of the innocent parents to be destroyed. Mark Rowley, the Chief Constable of Surrey Police, criticised the way Milly's family were cross examined and their personal lives were thrown into the spotlight during the trial and said he was "shocked" by the treatment of Bob and Sally Dowler, the parents of 13-yearold school girl Milly Dowler, during the trial of Levi Bellfield for their daughter's murder. He called for changes in the way the justice system treats victims and witnesses during court cases. Chief Constable Rowley were outraged and his comments come after the director of public prosecution said the case had raised "fundamental questions" about how victims were treated. "There were some extraordinarily private details that came out and I don't understand why they have to be public when celebrities can get injunctions to protect their privacy. "They make money out of celebrity, but here is someone who doesn't want celebrity, whose daughter has been killed, but is being vilified and humiliated. It completely incongruous and unnecessary", said the Chief Constable. The victims, the schoolgirl's parents Sally and Bob Dowler said they had paid "too high a price" for the verdict. They said they had suffered a "mentally scarring experience on an unimaginable scale" during his trial, being forced to defend themselves against allegations while Belfield said nothing being even able to refuse to appear in court to hear his sentence. Private details of their lives came out during a hostile cross examination by Bellfield's defence team.

A new chapter for Chris and Rihanna

Chris Brown and Rihanna seemed to have forgotten the 2009 episode of aggression. Recently reunited by Twitter, the artists have been exchanging secret messages. He tweeted: '@Rihanna, you got that pic I sent you”. Then quickly the bad boy deleted the message, but it was too late already. So far no avid follower captured a screen grab of this exchange. Oh no! In the last month, the ex-lovers started to follow each other on Twitter. At the time, Rihanna defended her actions, saying: 'It's Twitter, not the altar! Calm down”. Although, rumors say that Chris Brown would be holding meetings in secret with her at a mutual friend´s home. A source said that Rihanna thinks it a possibility to be with Brown again, but it is prevented by the record label.

AMY WINEHOUSE

booed on stage! Just when we thought Amy Winehouse was making some improvement, she goes on to deliver her worst ever performance and proves us wrong. And this is exactly what happened last week. The concert was in Serbia and the singer was totally disorientated and really aggressive with the public. Videos of this concert are circulating on the YouTube. One of them shows Amy trying to sing Back to Black and one can clearly hear the audience booing her. Then in the minute 3:41 of the video, Amy throws the microphone at the public and tries to get the backing vocals to do the same. Insane! More such videos show Amy struggling to perform. After watching them one cannot help but speculate that drugs still play a part in Amy´s life. The Serbian newspapers are calling this concert “the worst in the local history”. And I agree! And Amy must be upset which is probably why she has canceled all her European tour dates and maybe won´t take to the stage so soon.

NAOMI CAMPBELL

shares fitness secrets Supermodel Naomi Campbell confessed that she doesn´t indulge in crazy diets. The top model told Vogue Italy that she is always careful of what she eats and does not give up on her daily exercises. “I do not drink alcohol, I do not eat red meat and I do exercises for 90 minutes every day”, she said. Naomi also classified her wardrobe as extensive and said that she has not got rid of anything since 1986! WOW! “I have collected and kept all that has been given to me by all the designers that I have worked with, which is a lot!”, she told the magazine. Now it makes sense that she used to beat her housekeepers. This girl has a fashion museum inside her house. [sic]

JENNIFER LOPEZ flashes in Spain

We all know that Jennifer Lopez loves to show a little too much skin. Do you remember her famous Versace green dress at the 2000 Grammys? Its true that she has changed her style quite a bit and appears much more sophisticated now. Anyways, the essence is still there and she provided much fodder to the tabloids in Germany by exposing her breast to thousands of paparazzi. American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez had a big wardrobe malfunction last week while filming for a German television show. The actress made a spectacular entrance in a horse-drawn carriage before taking her seat. But as she tried to arrange the train of her flowing dress to sit down, the garment slipped, exposing her. Lopez was in Palma, Spain shooting a spot for Germany's Wetten Dass...? Meaning "Wanna bet?" when she had a Janet Jackson nipple moment. The 41-year-old skyrocketed as a favorite on Idol but is still uncertain about her coming back for another season on the hit Fox TV show. When asked if she'd return, Lopez said, "You know, this is the question of the hour. I don't know, I don't know."

GERI HALLIWELL caught stripping on yacht Beware, Geri! There is always atleast one paparazzi around. The former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell decided to spend a few days with her family at Cote D'Azur, the coast of France. Thats when she was spotted on a yacht stripping off her bikini and slipped a bit of the nip. I really don´t know what she was trying to do, maybe changing clothes? Has she heard about a changing room? Anyway, at least it helped her be included in this section. Well done, girl!

MARIAH CAREY reusing album cover photo to

launch perfume

What year is this? I was not sure when I saw Mariah Carey using the photo used in 1999 for her album "Rainbow" to release her new perfume line called Lollipop Splash this week. The “new” perfume, in fact, is being called the remix, because it is a kind of "recycle" of a former perfume line launched last year called Lollipop. Everything is kind of recycled, I can say. The fragrances are called "Vision of Love," "Inseparable" and "Never Forget You," all named after Carey's songs. The goal is to give to the fans the ability to connect with the new mama on a more personal level, and use her music as an inspiration to craft scents that are like floral melodies of mango, berries, jasmine flowers and peonies. I feel connected to Mariah´s photoshop obsession. Ha!

LINDSAY films commercials while under house arrest

During her house arrest, Lindsay Lohan has been reading scripts, doing some paintings and receiving friends. And now, she is also doing commercials from the most comfortable jail cell ever, her home. The actress recently appeared in a promotional video released by the site TMZ. Lohan is reported getting US$25,000 for this 18-second ad in which she talks about discovering the site Beezid.com “during some of my time at home.” The artist also received US$10,000 credit to buy on the site. Lindsay Lohan was sentenced last April for 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service for a parole violation for stealing a necklace. She is to be confined to her home until September.

Britney Spears appears chubby again! I don´t know where is that skinny, fit and slender Britney that we saw in rehearsals and on some red carpets. Everybody was so looking forward to her debut, but then we found a voluptuous girl on stage. Nothing against girls curves, but I expected something like Oops! I did it again from Mtv Music Awards in 2000. I´m so nostalgic today! The forever pop princess opened her new tour called Femme Fatale in Sacramento, California. Even not singing live (like always), although some fans told sources that she actually sang Until The World Ends without any playback. But what counts is that she can still rock us with her moves. This mama still knows how to dance, but a little bit slower.

The Brazilian Post

FROM COMPLAINING TO APPRECIATING Do you ever complain? Let's face it – we all do it, and sometimes we don't even realise that we're doing it. We complain about the weather, life, people, things not going as we had planned, etc. Slowly, before we know it, 'complaining' becomes our predominant communication style. When someone asks us about our day, what do we tell them about first? We may even turn complaining into an art form – complaining to create laughter; to find out others' thoughts or to spur us into action. Today see how many people start conversations with you that centre on a complaint and tomorrow see how many times you do the same. Why give up complaining? Well, complaining saps our energy and that of others. Also, when we dwell on what's wrong or what went wrong our clarity diminishes and our unhappiness increases. Complaining just wrecks our mood and motivation. So how can we break the habit? A good place to start is to catch yourself complaining and by straight away rephrasing that complaint. If you're tired and have to go to work instead of saying “I'm tired, I don't want to go to work,” you could rephrase it to “I'm tired but I am still going to get lots done today.” Instead of “I can't believe I have to cook AGAIN!!!” how about “Now is my chance to try out this new recipe.” Notice what a difference rephrasing makes to how you feel. Why not be kind to yourself? It isn't just ourselves either, others will enjoy our company more too. Another method is to challenge yourself to see if you can find solutions for 'justifiable' complaints, and before they get too big and the complaining spiral picks up too much momentum. Instead, be present and focus on what you can do, then and there, to resolve things. Be deter-

ARIES This is a time of fantasy and longing, but also a wonderful time for poetry and the imagination. Not everything you hear and not everything you say will be based on facts. Listen to the analysis of partners. At home there may be some domestic convulsions, perhaps because of a communication problem with siblings or other people in the family environment. Be flexible in the face of ultimatums. By becoming bigger than the situation and occupying the moral and spiritual high-ground, you will automatically be the winner. By the end of the month you should be quite clear as to who is in your corner and what has a chance of materializing.

TAURUS This is a great period for pushing your ideas, especially at work and in connection with inventive methods for investment and financial growth. Listen to your own judgment; as opinions of others will be incorrect. You could take a calculated risk but impulsive moves and emotionally-driven responses could land you in hot water. There is a possibility of ultimatums or threats as someone may feel that their territory is being threatened. Your interests are protected so even if you feel you have burnt your fingers and your bridges, your future happiness is assured. For now, maybe the best choice of all is to stand back and allow the story to unfold.

GEMINI This week will probably awaken some financial anxieties and power battles connected with sharing. If you want to feel more secure, eliminate unnecessary expenses and economize drastically. Also, you now have the

courage and drive with which to meet your targets. It may make you a tad more defensive, and it might seem as though conflict is breaking out in rather too many quarters. It will be worth remembering that all is not out in the open, and some people could have deeply hidden agendas. The less impressed you are by appearances, the better. And by the same principle, you can use stealth and artifice to conceal your intentions.

CANCER You emerge from a period of self-imposed obscurity and are ready to take action to improve your position and influence. You take with you a deep sensitivity, spirituality and empathy which guide you in your dealings. Good fortune comes your way by the end of the week, perhaps because of a happy development socially or in your travels, or perhaps because of financial expansion. You will need all the luck coming your way, as disruption and change lie ahead, which will require constant adjustment to restructuring processes in relationships and career. Not for every Cancerian, but there is a general trend for the unexpected and the unusual.

LEO You are inclined to withdraw from the social scene to concentrate on your inner development. This is a great time for spiritual growth, and it is also a time when you may experience good fortune in your career, especially as the week ends. You are entering a period of soul searching which may have som thing to do with work and survival at a time when you are unsettled. Friends may also present difficulties. Some come with unreasonable demands, some with unrealistic dreams. Stick to the ones you know you can trust. Adopt a wait-and-see approach until you have all

the information required or you feel comfortable with your response.

VIRGO You may be a little worn out because of obsessive thoughts or tiring discussions with friends, or conflicts with kids. A determined and hard-working approach will see you through the challenges of this period. Economic restraint is important, especially in your social life. A dynamic period begins in your professional life, but initially you must really take care that you are not led astray by unrealistic ideas. Events come at you suddenly and you could misinterpret what you see and hear. Therefore, go carefully and reserve judgement until you know precisely what is what. In this blurry cosmic astroscape, there's no need to be paranoid, just discriminating.

LIBRA This is a good period in your personal life when you are strongly focused on your goals and when your ability to plan for the future is at a peak. You may have to labor with partners who have their own ideas about how things should be done, and who invariably go down the wrong path or who are simply too unrealistic. Trust your own judgment. The end of the week is an excellent time in your professional life. Competent leadership brings prosperity and expansion. It might be difficult to see the full picture at present so while you should not be unrealistic in your expectations, a positive outlook will not only lift your spirits but it could alter the outcome.

SCORPIO You are likely to encounter a multiplicity of diversions which can seriously lead you astray. In per-

mined to not get into the downward spiral of complaining. We can't control everything – things will happen or not happen – we can, however, always control our thoughts. We can choose to put the brakes on complaining and enjoy the challenge of finding a solution, to take charge of the wheel and make today a no-complaining day. In parallel, take up the appreciation challenge. Start noticing the good things, the things that make you smile, the things that go right - acknowledge and appreciate them. Often we walk right by them. Set yourself the challenge every hour to appreciate at least one thing and notice a difference in how you feel. It could be, the sunshine, a smile, a hot drink, your warm coat, your friend, your child, the sunset, the birds singing or the lunch stop to appreciate. Challenge yourself to see at least one good thing in each person you meet. Allow your appreciation to shine out, and then share these things with others. In this way we lift our spirits, enrich and empower ourselves and others too. So, set your radar to notice the good today. Complaining and appreciating are really just opposite sides of the same coin or like two different sets of glasses, the 'complaining' glasses tint everything grey and the 'appreciative' ones make everything colourful. Challenge yourself to not complain for a day, a week, a month; to flip the coin and start noticing what there is to appreciate. We always have a choice, probably one doesn't consciously make the choice to complain; we can now consciously make the choice to appreciate though. Inner Space, Covent Garden www.innerspace.gov.uk

sonal relationships you have secrets, or you send mixed messages about your intentions. You may create a smokescreen to conceal your activities. Or you may just be confused in matters of intimacy. The important thing is to be honest about dreams and disappointments. Partners tend to be tolerant and understanding, and absolutely willing to talk about sensitive issues. Travel is also beginning to play a more significant role in your life and, although journeys taken this week could involve delays and re-routing, you will gain much from your encounters.

SAGITTARIUS There is a lot of focus on how to make your daily life more satisfying these days, and you have the opportunity to increase quality of life in a variety of areas. This is for example an excellent time for intimacy and sexual enjoyment, because your appreciation of your body and senses is at a peak. At work, colleagues find you helpful and your influence grows, especially as regards transforming the way business is conducted. Beware of partnerships with people who are long on promises but short on details. You should also be a little wary of handling machinery and unfamiliar things; in this climate a moment's lapse of attention could prove costly.

CAPRICORN Stresses and strains in communication, particularly in partnership matters, as the week begins put you somewhat on the defensive. There is a tendency for people to come with emotional ultimatums and it can be quite difficult for you to deal with irrational outbursts. Patience and diplomacy are the way through such issues. The weekend brings good fortune for partners and loved ones, and perhaps

TO ADVERTISE mail us at sales@brazilianpost.co.uk or call Marcelo 078 2816 5812

someone you love has a stroke of luck. At work, you are witness to new people entering the scene with naïve and unrealistic ideas about how to do things. Also, if you sense someone is about to bail out of an arrangement, activate your back-up plan.

AQUARIUS There is a lot of pressure in your working life during the course of the week, but you are determined, and discipline and hard work resolve the knottiest problems. Partnership can be inspiring, especially because partners are going through a creative or spiritually uplifting period, which evokes a very positive atmosphere in the home. If you are single, beware of potential lovers promising the earth but delivery nothing more than a few lines of poetry. There are new trends with children now, but communication is initially way off the mark. People could change their minds at the last moment and unforeseen circumstances could interfere with a perfect plan.

PISCES Confusing clouds obscure clarity in your domestic life, and there can be some disappointments. You will need to watch domestic spending at this time, and avoid being led astray by unrealistic promises. This week finds you at your most intuitive and elusive; likewise, events could prove mysterious. Love and romance take the top spot for many, making this an entirely wonderful period. However, others may feel baffled and confused by someone's behaviour. In a time of uncertainty, it is best to wait-and-watch. The weekend brings inspired communication and great pleasures through entertainment. Professionally too, there is expansion and good fortune.

World Russian passenger jet crash kills 44 Forty four people were killed and eight survived with serious injuries when a Russian passenger plane crashed onto a motorway before landing, leaving bodies strewn over the road, officials said on last Tuesday. The RussAir Tu-134 tried to land just before midnight local time on last Monday on a motorway two km from Petrozavodsk airport in the Karelia region of northern Russia. But the plane, which was carrying out a flight from Moscow's Domodedovo airport, crashed and caught fire before it approached the airport. "On July 20, a Tu-134 plane sustained a hard landing. Contact was lost with the pilot at 23:40. The survivors have been sent to Petrozavodsk hospital," the local branch of the emergencies ministry said in a statement on its website. The spokesman of The Russian investigative committee Vladimir Markin told Russian news agencies that a criminal probe was being opened into neglect of air transport rules. "According to the latest information, 52 people were on board the plane. Forty four were killed and eight were injured," an emergencies ministry official said. The emergencies ministry in Moscow published a list of the passengers on the flight while the local branch of the ministry in Karelia gave a list of the eight people who had survived. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, although aviation sources have been quoted as saying that bad weather in the area at the time could have been a factor. Human error was also not ruled out. The eight survivors were hospitalised, some in serious condition, emergency situations ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said.

Mubarak has stomach cancer, says lawyer Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak, whose trial on charges of ordering the killing of anti-regime protesters is due in August, has stomach cancer, his lawyer Farid al-Dib said on last Monday. Over 5m hit by China floods

More than 5 million people have been displaced or otherwise affected by flooding in eastern China that is also pushing up food prices, state media reported on last Sunday. Torrential rains have left huge areas of Hubei and Zhejiang provinces under water, with more than 1 million acres (432,200 hectares) of farmland inundated. Almost 1,000 businesses have been forced to suspend operations and 5.7 million people have had their lives disrupted reports said. More than 7,000 homes collapsed or were otherwise damaged and direct financial damage was estimated at almost 6 billion yuan ($930 million). The downpour triggered a mudslide that buried houses and killed two people in Zhejiang's Changshan county, while two more were killed and two were left missing by flooding in Hubei. Flooding in eastern and southern China this month has left more than 170 people dead or missing. Roads and railways have been blocked, but aid supplies are arriving.

8-year-old seized in Pak, forced to wear suicide vest

An eight-year-old Pakistani girl was allegedly kidnapped by militants who forced her to wear a suicide vest to attack security forces in the country's northwest, police said. Suhana, a student of Class III, said she was kidnapped from her hometown of Peshawar on by two women and a man on last sunday. "They asked me to come close to them and then they placed a handkerchief on my face and I fell unconscious," she told the media. The girl said her abductors forced her to wear an explosive vest and then took her to a security check post in Balambat area of Lower Dir district. "They asked me to get close to the soldiers and sent me towards the check post to carry out a suicide attack. I ran towards the check post and raised an alarm," Suhana said. Lower Dir district police chief Saleem Marwat said security forces rescued the girl and removed the suicide vest she was wearing. Police are yet to arrest Suhana's abductors, who fled in a car after dropping her near the check post. Pakistan has witnessed scores of suicide attacks over the past four years, with 2010 seeing the most attacks. Hundreds of people have lost their lives in these attacks, most of which were carried out by the Pakistani Taliban.

Japan parents launch nuclear 'emergency petition' Japanese parents living near the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear plant issued an "emergency petition" on last Tuesday, demanding the government do more to protect their children from radiation exposure. A coalition of six citizens' and environmental groups called for the evacuation of children and pregnant women from radiation hotspots, stricter monitoring and the early closure of schools for summer holidays. They voiced concern that authorities had focused on testing for radiation in the environment and not on people's internal exposure through inhaling or ingesting radioactive isotopes through dust, food and drinks. "Since atmospheric radiation levels show no sign of abating, the inhabitants of heavily contaminated areas will continue to endure high radiation doses, both externally and internally," they said in the petition. "To minimise such exposure, residents should be evacuated promptly to areas where radiation is less severe. Top priority must be given to infants, children and expectant mothers -- all highly susceptible to radiation effects." Japan has struggled to bring the Fukushima plant under control since it was hit by a tsunami that knocked out cooling systems, leading to three reactor meltdowns, explosions and radiation leaks into the air, soil and sea. Following the March 11 disaster, Japan has raised the exposure limit for adults and children from one to 20 millisieverts per year, matching the maximum exposure level for nuclear industry workers in many countries. The move has stoked anger and fear among many in Fukushima prefecture towns outside the 20-kilometre (12-mile) evacuation zone around the plant that have been exposed to lower levels of radiation for more than three months. The education ministry has since pledged to keep radiation in schools below one millisievert per year for the current school year from April 1 to March 31. Medical experts agree that high doses of radiation

raise the risk of cancers such as leukaemia and genetic defects, especially for foetuses and children, but they disagree on the risk of lower doses over longer periods of time. On last Tuesday the six protest groups -including local citizens, anti-nuclear activists, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth -launched their "Emergency Petition to Protect the Children of Fukushima" at the Japanese parliament. In a separate petition, one of the groups demanded the sacking of a radiation health risk management adviser to Fukushima prefecture, Nagasaki University Professor Shunichi Yamashita, alleging he had downplayed the threat. One of the organisers, Seiichi Nakate, told a news conference: "As a father of two children, I cannot forgive him for having told us that there is no problem and that we should let our children play outside as usual." "Parents who believed what he said are now feeling guilt towards their children," said Nakate, head of the Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation, adding: "Are we guinea pigs or livestock?" Professor Yamashita's office declined comment on the claims. Meanwhile, Fukushima prefecture said last Tuesday it would test washing walls, garden shrubs and roads in and around three elementary schools with high-pressure hoses to reduce radiation levels, sources said.

Syria prez offers reforms, but won't quit Syria's embattled president said on last Monday his regime would consider political reforms, including ending his Baath Party's monopoly on power, but gave no sign he might step down, a key demand of nationwide protests. The opposition dismissed Bashar Assad's speech, saying it lacked any clear move toward democracy. Activists said thousands of people took to the streets to protest in several cities. Much of Assad's message was not new, including his claim that the unrest is being driven by armed thugs and foreign conspirators. "Saboteurs" were trying to exploit legitimate demands for reform, he said. "What is happening today has nothing to do with reform. It has to do with vandalism," Assad told supporters at Damascus University. "There can be no development without stability, and no reform through vandalism." But he also announced that a "national dialogue'' would start soon and he was forming a committee to study constitutional amendments, including one that would open the way for formation of political parties other than the ruling Baath Party. The vague timetable and few specifics – and lack of any clear move toward ending the Assad family's 40-year rule – left Syrian dissidents deeply dissatisfied. "It did not give a vision about beginning a new period to start a transfer from a dictatorship into a national democratic regime with political pluralism,'' Hassan Abdul-Azim, a prominent opposition figure, said.

Ban Ki-moon reelected as UN chief The UN General Assembly has voted unanimously to elect Ban Kimoon for a second five-year term as the world body's Secretary General, lauding him for bolstering the organisation's role and visibility in "trying circumstances." The 192-nation assembly backed the 67-year-old former South Korean foreign minister by acclamation on last Tuesday. Ban's second term will commence from January 1, 2012. With no contenders to throw a challenge for the post, the assembly approved the new term by consensus. Ban declared his candidature two weeks ago and received the formal backing by the powerful 15-member UN Security Council on last Friday. All regional groups at the UN also endorsed him. Ban has termed his re-election as a "very great honour beyond expression." Gabon's UN ambassador Nelson Messone, the current Security Council President who introduced the assembly resolution, said Ban has "remarkably and with all objectivity and independence" worked on every continent, to promote peace, justice and international security, "sometimes in particularly difficult and trying circumstances." After the vote, Ban was escorted to the podium where General Assembly President Joseph Deiss told him, "In a complex, difficult international environment, you have strengthened the role and the visibility of the United Nations by adopting reform measures, launching exciting, innovative initiatives, and calling faithfully and constantly for respect for human rights, the rule of law and the other values rooted in our charter."

Brazil to become a formidable wine player

As the 30th edition of the world's largest wine trade fair comes to a close, the early conclusion is that consumers in Canada, China and Sweden will be seeing more Brazilian wines line store shelves. Consumers in 10 countries around the world including China, Sweden, Belgium and Canada will be able to sample vintages from new Brazilian wineries-the fifth biggest wine producer of the southern hemisphere. Mexico and Venezuela will also be importing Brazilian wines for the first time. Brazilian wines exhibited included many sparkling wines which are characterized as fresh and less alcoholic than their bubbly counterparts. Wines from this area are steadily gaining fans among high-end restaurants, and are represented on wine menus at some of London's fanciest restaurants including Jamie Oliver's establishment Fifteen, The Savoy and Japanese restaurants Zuma and Roka. Vinexpo, held alternate years between Hong Kong and Bordeaux, wrapped up in the French city last Thursday, where organizers say they received 48,000 professionals throughout the five-day trade fair – three percent more than the last expo there in 2009. The most visible turnout, however, was the strong Asian presence with a contingent of representatives from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and India: one in three international visitors was from Asia, surpassing even their own expectations, said Robert Beynat, director general of the expo. China and Hong Kong together make up the world's largest volume importer of Bordeaux wines, buying the equivalent of ₏333 million. In May, auction house Sotheby's also claimed that more than 70 percent of its total wine sales in 2011 came from Hong Kong auctions alone. And champagne mogul Moet Hennessey announced that it would be moving into China to produce high-end sparkling wines. The country is already its largest market for cognac.

45 ports to be prepared for private operations Brazil's government, which has already begun the process of handing over airports to private investment, is now preparing 45 ports to be licensed to operators. Brazil plans to auction first the rights to build and operate a new port terminal in the Amazon city of Manaus, said Tiago Lima, director of Brazilian water transportation agency Antaq. Most of the ports are located in Brazil's industrial and agricultural powerhouse in the south and southeast regions, with only seven of the 45 ports located in the north or northeast. Brazil handed many port services over to private operators in the 1990s, but the ports themselves are administrated by a government organisation. The licenses that the government plans to grant will allow operators full control of the port, under Antaq's supervision. Brazil is seeking to build up its transportation infrastructure to cut down the cost of production and increase its competitiveness with global rivals. Crowded ports often lead to delays in shipping, especially during the country's important harvests, when trucks and ships are backed up at ports such as Santos, which handles more than a fourth of Brazil's international shipping traffic.

Fight for stake in Brazil's largest Supermarket chain Brazil pharma raises £160m from IPO

Brazilian pharmaceutical retailer Brazil Pharma S.A. has raised 414 million Brazilian reais (£160 million) through an initial public offering of shares on the Brazilian Stock Exchange. The company sold 24 million common shares, with each share priced at BRL17.25. The company's share price came in line with its initial estimates of between BRL16.25 and BRL19.25. Brazil Pharma, which is controlled by the local investment bank BTG Pactual, plans to use the proceeds for acquisitions and investment in new stores as well as for the financing of its working capital. The shares will be listed under the Novo Mercado mechanism, which has the most rigorous listing rules on the exchange. To qualify, a company must float a minimum stake of 25%, and 100% of the company's shares must be common rather than preferred stock.

An increasingly bitter row between two giant French retailers for a stake in Brazil's largest chain of supermarkets, Grupo Pão de Açúcar, reached a flashpoint with the revelation that Groupe Casino obtained a court order earlier this month to search the offices of arch-rival Carrefour, which is said to be in talks for a possible partnership with Brazilian billionaire Abilio Diniz, GPA's major shareholder and Casino's current partner. Just last week, Casino increased its holding in Grupo Pão de Açúcar by 3.3% to 37%, paying a sum estimated at $363 million and signaling a warning to both Diniz and Carrefour (the company has an option to increase its stake to 41% next year, a move that would allow it to take voting control). The alleged negotiations have gone since last May without Casino's acknowledgment. As a result, the Saint-Étienne-based company requested a court order

Oil market caught flat-footed The International Energy Agency, the Paris based research arm of 28 industrialised countries, held an emergency press conference to announce that its members would release 60 million barrels onto the market – allocating two million barrels a day for a month. Half of the total will be coming from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It is only the third time the IEA tapped reserves; the first was in 1991 during the Gulf War, then again in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina wiped out some production in the Gulf of Mexico. This move triggered memories of G-7 currency interventions in the mid-1980s, the fabled Plaza and Louvre accords, when collective action by central banks was taken to either raise or lower the U.S. dollar. Some market purists were crying foul since governments decided to play an active role to sway prices. But the energy market, with members of the OPEC cartel controlling about 40 percent of production, certainly is not what one would call a free market. The IEA's emergency move can be linked back to the OPEC meeting in Vienna earlier this month. The 12 members left without agreeing to raise their production quota of 24.84 million barrels a day. In sum, the price hawks – led by Iran and Venezuela – did not agree with OPEC's swing producer Saudi Arabia, along with the UAE and Kuwait, on the need to raise production. On the eve of that OPEC gathering, the IEA said that oil above $100 a barrel would undermine growth in the second half of this year. Last week, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, I asked the IEA's Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka whether that strategy of leaning on OPEC backfired. He said the organization was willing to do its part if others could not raise production; now we know what he was referring to. While this joint strike attack brought prices down about four dollars a barrel, it will be up to those who hold the spare capacity to continue a downward trend in prices. The IEA says OPEC members have just over four million barrels of extra production they could bring to market – three-fourths of that in Saudi Arabia with the balance shared by the UAE and Kuwait. Saudi Arabia, through a leak to the Middle East newspaper Al Hayat last week, said it would add another million barrels of production in July – ignoring OPEC's call to leave production where it is. This is a clever and no doubt coordinated one-two punch from the IEA and U.S. ally Saudi Arabia – but it may not be a knock out punch against those wanting to keep oil above the century mark.

in Nanterre to search Carrefour's offices for evidence that these negotiations have taken place. During the search, bailiffs seized some 150 documents, of which 22 are said to be directly tied to the Carrefour-Diniz discussions and were retained by legal authorities. Last month, Casino also filed for international arbitration against Grupo Pão de Açúcar, arguing that discussions with Carrefour would jeopardize the terms of their partnership with the Brazilian company. An eventual merger of Pão de Açúcar and Carrefour's operations in Brazil (which would result in a combined number of 2,300 stores) could reduce fragmentation in the country's fast-growing $230 billion retail industry, 60% of which is dominated by the top 10 players. It would also give the combined company a 28% market share, more than double that of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Brazil

Mission impossible?

A dream becoming a nightmare: this could represent the situation in Brazil at the moment. With only three years to go to the start of the World Cup, the country is affected by a series of problems regarding the organization of the event. Works delays, uncertainty of which city will open the tournament, public transports not ready to receive so many people, insufficient hotel structures and corruption complaints against the Brazilian Football Confederation, are just some examples of the long journey that Brazil has to complete before 2014. The dream of hosting a World Cup after 60 years seems to be turning into a nightmare, which is making organizers FIFA representatives lose sleep, even if all these difficulties and problems had already been brought forward before Brazil was chosen as the host. Pelé, the biggest sportsman of all times, had already pointed out openly that Brazil wasn't ready to host a World Cup. Pelé said that organizing a World Cup would be a mistake and unfortunately it seems that he was right in saying so. Romario, ex-player and world Brazilian champion, who at the moment is a politician, announced that the organization of the tournament would cost approximately 37 billions pounds to the Brazilian state, some 10 times more of what was expected by President Ricardo Teixeira in 2007 when Brazil was chosen as host for 2014 World Championship. Romario heavily criticized Ricardo Teixeira and the other organizers and seems worried about the future of the 2014 Cup; the ex-player had previously asked for changes in Organization Committee and believes that those changes could save the World Cup.

A stranger in the nest Weak performance results and absence of the Brazilian team from the last three Olympics Games led the coach to take an extreme decision. The coach Rubén Magnano called the North-American point guard Larry James Taylor, 29, to be part of the Brazilian team, even knowing that the player has not completed his naturalization process yet. Ruben believes that Larry James has all the physical, technical and tactical qualities in order to help the group. “I looked at every possibility; He will train with all the other point guards in the team and he will fight for his place. No one is guaranteed” said the national team coach.

NEYMAR:

higher and higher If you ask any trader: What is the best investment in Brazil? Maybe the answer can be Neymar. The boy is only 19 years old but has already beaten all records in contracts and as his career has just started, everybody believes that he will get even better. After winning the Taça Libertadores title and playing in the national team, Neymar is already internationally renowned and is a treasure desired by world's biggest clubs, which even being aware of his release clause to be paid (45 million Euros), are still fighting for this rare talent. Santos, his actual club, dreams of keeping on the player but following his achievements and the titles won, it seems he will move to Europe next season to play with one of the big European clubs which will appreciate his talent even more.

Doping – The new menace

Doping in the Brazilian sport is not a rarity anymore. The high numbers of athletes who make use of prohibited substances have forced the confederations to take extreme measures to tackle this matter. However, the problem has not been solved and new cases keep appearing in papers regularly. Last week, the Brazilian swimmer Fabíola Molina, 36, was suspended, initially for 2 months, after her testing positive. Although the athlete declared at a press release that she took the substance without being aware of it, she was excluded from participating at the World Championship next month. The long list of substances declared prohibited by the Anti-doping Committee truly leaves one baffled but this surely cannot be used as an excuse as every athlete is coached by a professional who should specifically advise them on this and other related topics.

Thomas Dekker to return Dutch rider Thomas Dekker will make his comeback to the sport at the 80th Grote Prijs Stad St. Niklaas, a Belgian kermis, on July 6 following his two-year doping suspension. The 26-year-old made the announcement in Amsterdam, at the signing of his new book Schoon Genoeg (Clean Enough) and the screening of a documentary called Niemand kent mij (Nobody knows me), which will air in Nederlands 3. "He is an example, he's popular and is widely accepted in the peloton," Dekker said of Millar according to Novum. "It will be nice to get back to racing. That's the most important thing - I need competition. I have no idea how other riders in the peloton will react to me when I return."

CREATES MORE JOBS THAN

Brazil's economy is adding over a million jobs this year. Though Brazil's economy cooled a bit from a scorching growth of 7.5% last year, the country created 1.17 million new jobs so far this year. By comparison, the US created 783,000 jobs. In May alone, Brazil registered 252,067 jobs compared to around 54,000 jobs in the US. Over the last 12 months, Brazil created 2.25 million jobs while the US created a little over 454,000, according to government data. The overall number is not an exact, scientific comparison because Brazil includes farm payroll while the US data does not. However, farm jobs in the US are much less than they would be in Brazil due mostly to technical advances and mechanization. Brazil's economy is clearly hiring more than equivalent sectors in the US. Construction hires in Brazil in May were 28,922 compared to 5,529 in the US last month. Professional and business services firms added 71,246 jobs in May, according to Brazil's Labor Ministry. The US added around 44,000 jobs in the same sector in May.

Brazil's unemployment rate fell to record low as wages rise Due to this massive job creation, Brazil's unemployment rate fell to the lowest ever for the month of May as companies in Latin America's biggest economy hire workers to meet growing domestic demand. The jobless rate fell to 6.4 percent in May, from 7.5 percent a year earlier, the national statistics agency said in a report distributed from Rio de Janeiro. Record low unemployment coupled with a “substantial” increase in wages are driving economic growth. Companies ranging from investment banks to fast-food chains plan to expand their businesses in Latin America's biggest economy even as the government raises interest rates and curbs credit expansion to cool the fastest inflation in six years. Quiznos, the closely held Denver-based sandwich chain, plans to open 200 locations in Brazil over the next 7 to 10 years to boost growth. Burger King Holdings Inc. said this month it aims to reach 1,000 restaurants in Brazil in the next five years, up from 108 now. The Bank of New York Mellon Corp's Brazil unit intends to boost its staff by more than 20 percent this year to expand operations in this South American country. Experts predict that with sustain economy growth and two sporting mega events will boost employment further. Fortunately, such promising economic atmosphere is causing positive social trends such as “reverse” brain-drain to Brazil. In turn, Brazil is implementing policies to entice talented and skilled individuals to come back to work in their home country. Brazil's job market is booming as a result of a thriving economy and an appreciation of its local currency, which makes compensation much more attractive when converted to dollars or Euros. Thus, although companies operating in Brazil may have to pay more to recruit and hire new talent, the available pool of talented individuals willing to relocate to Brazil has increased greatly. Companies such as Vale do Rio Doce and Citigroup have stepped-up their recruiting process by recruiting from top MBA and other university programs in the US and around the world.
