he roar of the engines undoubtedly thrills the spectators. Even those who are not a fan of the sport are impressed with the high speeds. Celebrating 25 years of races on the streets of Toronto, the Indycar’s ninth stage took place in the city, on July 10th. Edmonton played host to the tenth stage of the race on the 24th of July. During the Toronto GP, the Brazilian race car driver Helio Castroneves, 36, gave an exclusive interview to Wave inside one of the large trucks of Team Penske, a team that he has been on for 11 years. Extremely nice and attentive, Castroneves was amazed when he realized that he would be interviewed by Brazilians and praised this community that gets larger every year. A resident of Fort Lauderdale, in Florida, and originally from São Paulo, Castroneves lives with his wife, Adriana Henao, and his one and a half year old daughter, Mikaella. His parents are always present and his sister, Kati, is his business manager. In 2008, Castroneves was charged with tax evasion in the amount of almost US$ 5 million and if he were convicted, could have received 35 years of prison. “This was the worst moment in my life, I thought it was all over”, he states. Thankfully, he was declared innocent after 6 months of fighting in court.

WAVE – We are celebrating 25 years of the Indy in Toronto. How many times have you raced here? CASTRONEVES – This is the 8th time for me here in Toronto. The first time was in 1996. I won here in ‘97, at the Indy Lights race. WAVE - Have you done any tours around the city? CASTRONEVES – Not this time! It’s funny, but it was easier before, when I was in lesser ranked categories (laughs). But I love Toronto, it is a beautiful, modern city and the restaurants are incredible. I like it a lot. I feel at home here! WAVE – In a few words, describe the Toronto race. CASTRONEVES – It is a very traditional race, I remember watching it on television when I was younger and today, I race on the same track! It is irregular and curvy, with a different and cool layout. The fact that the layout has been the same for so many years makes it a very special race. WAVE – You are the only Brazilian and the sixth race car driver in history to win the most famous race three times: the Indianapolis 500. What is your biggest dream? CASTRONEVES – My dream is to continue racing and breaking barriers. It would be cool to unite all the great drivers: Rick Mears, A.J. Foyt and Al Unser Sr, with four victories! I know that I am in a very special group, but to be near them would be a real honour. WAVE – You won the 5th edition of Dancing with the Stars, on ABC, in 2007, dancing wonderfully with Julianne Hough. Tell us a bit about this experience. CASTRONEVES – It was an adventure! Of course I will never be a professional dancer, but the opportunity came up and I couldn’t resist. I met

one of the directors of the show during a race, and she found it very interesting that I and one of my colleagues were so distinct from one another, because he lived on a farm in Columbus and had a truck, while I lived in a mansion in Miami and had a Ferrari. So this director invited me to participate in the show. At first I thought it was a joke! Then I asked my sponsors if it would be a problem and they all liked the idea! This way, I was able to reconcile the shooting schedule with my profession.

the distress and bad feelings that were inside of me. In the book, I write about my anguish and how I overcame it. Just like me, there are other people who have gone through the same situation and didn’t know what to do. Family unity is very important to overcome any problem. The end of the book is a beginning of a new life, in other words, the birth of my daughter and my partnership with Adriana. When I thought it was all over, life surprised me and I was able to begin again.

WAVE – But you didn’t just participate, you won the show! CASTRONEVES – Yes and it was really cool! My objective was just not to be eliminated at the beginning. I trained for about four hours a day! I felt at ease and every time I heard the audience’s applause, the more I got into it! Of course I had a spectacular partner and we clicked right away. We are friends till today. Nothing happened between Julianne and me, even though a lot of comments were made at the time, but seduction is part of the dance! It was a unique experience, I had a lot of fun, but I prefer to race than to dance (laughs).

WAVE – Who inspired you to become a race car driver? CASTRONEVES – Senna was always my inspiration. Then again, he was the inspiration of my generation. I caught the end of Piquet, but Senna was our hero, a mirror for me. I wanted to drive just like him and break all the records as he did. It was a great loss, especially for us Brazilians.

WAVE – If you had the opportunity to participate in a reality show, would you do it? CASTRONEVES – I will never say never after having been on Dancing with the Stars! I think it all depends on the opportunity and if it is a good one, why not? WAVE – You published a book, “Victory Road – The Ride of My Life”, where you write about your experiences and obstacles which you overcame and you also have a blog. Is writing a hobby? CASTRONEVES – Yes...the Idea to write the book came about just after the incident with the court in the US, when I felt that I needed an outlet for

WAVE – What is your relationship with Team Penske? CASTRONEVES – I have been on this team for 11 years and I intend to stay for as long as I am doing a good job. My teammates Will Power and Ryan Briscoe are fantastic and super fast. We work together! Each one has their best day and we know how to deal with that. Without a doubt, it is a very good team environment. WAVE - Helio, we thank you for granting us this interview. What is your message to the Brazilian community in Canada? CASTRONEVES – Hey people from Canada, I want to ask for your support, because I am not the only Brazilian who races at the Toronto Indy, there are five other drivers! Celebrando 25 anos de corridas nas ruas de Toronto, a Fómula Indy teve sua nona etapa realizada na cidade, em 10 de Julho. Edmonton recebeu a décima etapa da competição em 24 de Julho.

urante o GP de Toronto, o piloto brasileiro Hélio Castroneves, 36, concedeu uma entrevista exclusiva para a Wave, dentro de um dos grandes caminhões do Team Penske, equipe pela qual corre há 11 anos. Extremamente simpático e atencioso, Castroneves se surpreendeu quando percebeu que seria entrevistado por brasileiros e logo fez um elogio a essa comunidade que cresce a cada ano. Com residência em Fort Lauderdale, na Flórida, o paulistano Castroneves vive com sua

mulher Adriana Henao e sua filhinha de um ano e meio, Mikaella. Os pais estão sempre presentes e a irmã, Kati, atua como gerente de negócios do piloto. Em 2008, Castroneves foi acusado de sonegação fiscal de quase US$ 5 milhões e se fosse condenado, poderia pegar 35 anos de prisão. “Esse foi o pior momento de toda minha vida, achei que estava tudo acabado”, comenta ele. Felizmente, o piloto foi inocentado após quase seis meses de briga na justiça.

WAVE - Estamos comemorando 25 anos da Indy em Toronto. Quantas vezes já correu aqui? CASTRONEVES – Essa é a oitava vez que corro em Toronto. A primeira vez foi em 1996. Fui campeão aqui em 97, correndo na Indy Lights. WAVE - Já fez algum programa turístico na cidade? CASTRONEVES – Não dessa vez! É engraçado, mas antigamente era possível, quando eu estava em categorias menores (risos). Mas eu adoro Toronto, é uma cidade bonita, moderna e os restaurantes são incríveis. Eu gosto muito, me sinto em casa! WAVE - Fale um pouco sobre a corrida de Toronto. CASTRONEVES – É uma corrida muito tradicional, eu me lembro de assistir as provas na televisão

6 | INTERVIEW quando eu era moleque e hoje, eu corro nessa pista! É irregular e ondulada, com layout diferente e bacana. O fato de ser o mesmo layout há tantos anos, faz dela uma corrida muito especial. WAVE - Voce é o único brasileiro e o sexto piloto na história a vencer três vezes a corrida mais famosa do automobilismo: as 500 milhas de Indianápolis. Qual o seu maior sonho? CASTRONEVES – Meu sonho é continuar correndo e quebrando barreiras. Seria muito legal me reunir aos grandes pilotos Rick Mears, A.J. Foyt e Al Unser Sr, com quatro vitórias! Sei que estou num grupo muito especial, mas estar perto deles seria realmente uma honra. WAVE - Você foi campeão da 5a edição do programa Dancing with the Stars, da rede ABC, em 2007, dançando maravilhosamente com Julianne Hough. Conte-nos um pouco sobre essa experiência. CASTRONEVES – Foi uma aventura! É claro que nunca serei dançarino profissional, mas pintou a oportunidade e eu não resisti. Conheci uma das diretoras do programa em uma corrida, ela achou muito interessante o fato de um companheiro de equipe e eu sermos tão distintos um do outro, pois ele morava em uma fazenda em Columbus e tinha um caminhão, enquanto eu morava em uma mansão em Miami e tinha uma Ferrari. Então essa diretora me convidou para participar do programa. A princípio, achei que era piada! Depois perguntei para meus patrocinadores se teria algum problema e todos gostaram da idéia! Assim, consegui conciliar as gravações com minha profissão. WAVE - Mas não foi uma simples participação, você foi o vencendor do show! CASTRONEVES – Sim e foi super legal! O meu objetivo era não ser eliminado logo no início. Eu treinava cerca de quatro horas por dia! Me senti super à vontade e quanto mais ouvia os aplausos do público, mais me empolgava! É claro que minha parceira era espetacular e tivemos um click muito bacana. Somos amigos até hoje. Nunca rolou nada entre a Julianne e eu, apesar dos comentários que fizeram na época, mas a sedução faz parte da dança! Foi uma experiência única, me diverti muito, mas prefiro seguir correndo do que dançando (risos). WAVE - Se pintasse o convite para participar de um reality show, você toparia? CASTRONEVES –Nunca vou dizer nunca depois de ter feito Dancing with the Stars! Acho que tudo depende de oportunidades e se for uma boa, porque não?

WAVE - Você tem um livro publicado, “Victory Road – The Ride of My Life”, onde conta suas experiências e superações e você também tem um blog. Escrever é um hobby? CASTRONEVES – É...a idéia de escrever o livro surgiu logo depois da minha fase com a corte dos EUA, quando eu sentia que precisava colocar para fora toda a aflição e sentimento ruim, que estavam dentro de mim. No livro, eu conto minhas angústias e superação. Assim como eu, tem outras pessoas que passam por situações parecidas e não sabem o que fazer. A união familiar é muito importante para superar qualquer problema. O final do livro é o recomeço de uma vida nova, ou seja, o nascimento da minha filha e a minha parceria com a Adriana. Quando pensei que estava tudo acabado, a vida me surpreendeu e pude recomeçar tudo de novo.

“Meu sonho é continuar correndo e quebrando barreiras” WAVE - Quem foi sua inspiração para se tornar piloto de corridas? CASTRONEVES – Senna sempre foi minha inspiração. Aliás, ele foi a inspiração da minha geração. Eu peguei o finalzinho do Piquet, mas o Senna era nosso herói, um espelho para mim. Eu queria guiar da maneira dele e quebrar todos os recordes como ele quebrou. Foi realmente uma grande perda, especialmente para nós, brasileiros. WAVE – Como é seu relacionamento com a equipe Penske? CASTRONEVES – Estou nessa equipe há 11 anos e pretendo ficar enquanto estiver fazendo um bom trabalho. Os meus companheiros de equipe Will Power e Ryan Briscoe são fantásticos e super rápidos. Nós trabalhamos juntos! Cada um tem seu melhor dia e sabemos lidar com isso. Sem dúvida, é um ambiente de equipe muito bom. WAVE - Helio, agradecemos a sua disponibilidade para essa entrevista. Qual o seu recado para a comunidade brasileira no Canadá? BRASILEIROS INVESTEM NA INDY Combustível, pilotos e investidores brasileiros firmam presença em uma das principais competições automobilísticas do mundo

Fórmula Indy é um dos esportes favoritos dos norte-americanos, assim como o futebol é para os brasileiros. Em média, cerca de 93 mil pessoas comparecem a cada corrida. A prova mais importante da Indy, as 500 Milhas de Indianápolis, é transmitida para mais de 344 milhões de lares em 203 países. Segundo as pesquisas, o perfil do fã da Indy é um cidadão de boa escolaridade e alto nível de renda (US$ 81 mil/ano), com maior lealdade às marcas que o consumidor médio. A Apex-Brasil, uma agência brasileira de promoção de exportações e investimentos, foi pioneira ao identificar a Fórmula Indy como uma oportunidade para promover negócios entre empresas brasileiras e estrangeiras durante as corridas no Brasil, Canadá, Estados Unidos e Japão. Em 2010, a parceria da Apex-Brasil com a Indy rendeu US$ 589 milhões em negócios às empresas brasileiras. A expectativa é de que alcance a cifra dos US$ 700 milhões, em 2011. “Ampliamos nossos contatos durante as corridas, o que seria impossível se não fosse dentro do ambiente da Indy. O projeto foi para nós uma grande oportunidade de reforçar a imagem do café brasileiro no exterior”, diz Nathan Herszkowicz, Diretor Executivo da Associação Brasileira das Indústrias de Café (ABIC). Segundo o Coordenador do Projeto Especial da Apex-Brasil na Indy, Maurício Manfrê, o foco do projeto são empresas que já têm alguma ma-

turidade exportadora. “Os participantes podem levar os clientes para eventos de relacionamento; desenvolver ações de imagem e mídia em internet, TV e rádio; promover os produtos por meio de distribuição de brindes e degustação, além de sugerir ações diferenciadas”, comenta ele. “A Apex-Brasil sabe explorar incrivelmente as corridas da Indy e no Grande Prêmio de Toronto, não é diferente. A estrutura é perfeita para reunir exportadores brasileiros e importadores canadenses, de uma variada gama de produtos e serviços”, comenta o Embaixador Afonso Cardoso, Cônsul-Geral do Brasil em Toronto. A presença brasileira na Indy é ainda mais notável quando vemos o ranking da temporada de 2011. Ao todo, seis pilotos brasileiros participam das corridas. Tony Kanaan é o melhor colocado na classificação do campeonato, que até o fechamento desta edição, estava em 4o lugar. Hélio Castroneves, segue em 9 lugar. Vitor Meira em 12o. Ana Beatriz em 22o. Raphael Matos em 28oo e finalmente Bruno Junqueira, em 41o lugar. Além disso, todos os carros são movidos a etanol brasileiro, fornecido pela União da Indústria de Cana-de-Açúcar (Unica), tornando-se a primeira e única corrida 100% movida a energia limpa e renovável. A parceria da Unica com a Indy firmou-se em 2009, através da Apex-Brasil.

Brasil x Canadá A Apex-Brasil já “deu a largada” no mercado canadense. Em 2010, a empresa participou do Brazilian Flavours, no Harbourfront em Toronto, e também de um evento da Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA), para apresentar às empresas brasileiras o grande potencial de investimentos, em diversos setores, na região da Grande Toronto. Em 2011, apoiou a ABVCAP (Associação Brasileira de Venture Capital e Private Equity) em uma conferência da associação de fundos de investimentos canadense, em Vancouver. Segundo dados do Banco Central, o Canadá ja investiu US$504 milhões no Brasil em 2011, o que coloca o país como o 7º maior investidor no Brasil nesse ano. Recentemente, a Talon Metals, por exemplo, adquiriu duas grandes minas de ferro no estado do Pará. Nesse ano, a Petrobras visitou o Canadá para prospectar empresas de equipamentos para exploração de petróleo. No momento, o setor é um dos mais atrativos para investimentos no Brasil, em decorrência da exploração das reservas de petróleo na camada pré-sal do Oceano Atlântico.

he Formula Indy is one of the most favourite sports for North Americans, just like soccer is for Brazilians. On average, around 93,000 people attend each race. The most important of the Indy races, the Indianapolis 500, is transmitted to over 344 million homes in 203 countries. According to research, the profile of the Indy fan is a citizen with a good scholastic level and high income (US$ 81 thousand/year), and with a higher brand loyalty than the average consumer. Apex-Brasil, a Brazilian promotional export and investment agency, was a pioneer in identifying the Formula Indy as an opportunity to promote business between Brazilian and foreign companies during the races in Brazil, Canada, the United States and Japan. In 2010, the partnership between Apex-Brasil and the Indy yielded US$ 589 million in business for Brazilian companies. The expectation is that it will reach a value of US$ 700 million, in 2011. “We have expanded our contacts during the races, which would have been impossible if it were not inside the Indy environment. For us, this project was a great opportunity to reinforce the image of Brazilian coffee abroad”, says Nathan Herszkowicz, Executive Director of the Associação Brasileira das Indústrias de Café (ABIC) / Brazilian Association of Coffee Industries.

According to the Special Project Coordinator for Apex-Brasil at the Indy, Maurício Manfrê, the main focus of the project are companies who already have some maturity in exports. “Participants can take guests to networking events; develop actions for image and media for the Internet, TV and radio; promote products by distributing gifts and sampling, and also suggest different actions”, he states. “Apex-Brasil knows how to incredibly explore the Indy races and the Toronto Grand Prix, is no different. The structure is perfect for uniting Brazilian exporters with Canadian importers, with a wide range of products and services”, comments Ambassador Afonso Cardoso, the Brazilian Consul General in Toronto. The Brazilian presence at the Indy is even more notable when we see the ranking of the 2011 season. In all, six Brazilian drivers participate in the races. Tony Kanaan is in the best position in the championship, which up to the closing of this edition, was in 4th place. Hélio Castroneves, follows in 9th place. Vitor Meira in 12th, Ana Beatriz in 22nd, Raphael Matos in 28th and finally Bruno Junqueira, in 41st place. Besides this, all the cars run on Brazilian ethanol, supplied by the União da Indústria de Cana-deAçúcar (Unica), making it the first and only race

run on 100% clean and renewable energy. The partnership with Unica and the Indy was sealed in 2009, through Apex-Brasil.

Brazil x Canada Apex-Brasil has already “taken off” in the Canadian market. In 2010, the company participated in Brazilian Flavours, on the Harbourfront in Toronto, and also at the event, Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA), to show the Brazilian companies the great investment potential, in many sectors, in the Greater Toronto area. In 2011, they supported ABVCAP (Brazilian Association of Venture Capital and Private Equity) at a conference of the Canadian investment fund, in Vancouver. According to data from the Central Bank, Canada has already invested US$504 million in Brazil in 2011, which places the country as the 7th largest investor in Brazil this year. Recently, Talon Metals, for example, acquired two large iron mines in the state of Pará. This year, Petrobras visited Canada to prospect petroleum equipment exploration companies. Right now, this is one of the most attractive sectors for investment in Brazil, as a result of the exploration of oil reserves in the pré-sal in the Atlantic Ocean.

Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses foi construído em 1981, em uma área de 155 mil hectares, nas margens do Rio Preguiças, no nordeste do Estado do Maranhão, a cerca de 260 km da capital, São Luís. O acesso pode ser realizado por via terrestre, através da BR 135; por via marítima, através do canal do Rio Preguiças, em Atins; ou por via fluvial, a partir de Barreirinhas, também através do Rio Preguiças. Com dunas de até 40 metros de altura e lagoas de água doce, esse paraíso já foi palco de filmagens da película Casa de Areia (House of Sand), estrelado por Fernanda Montenegro e Fernanda Torres. O filme brasileiro, com direção de Andrucha Waddington, venceu três prêmios: Sundance Film Festival, Satellite Award e o Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil. Além disso, foi selecionado por diversos festivais entre eles, o Toronto International Film Festival, em 2005. A melhor época para visitar os Lençóis é entre os meses de maio e outubro, quando as lagoas do parque estão cheias. Na estação seca, de novembro a janeiro, as lagoas iniciam o processo de drenagem e diminuem o nível de água. Durante a época das chuvas, de fevereiro a abril, o nível retorna ao normal.

O Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses oferece vários tipos de passeios, tanto pelas lagoas ou praias da região. O ideal é tirar um dia para visitar cada uma delas. A Lagoa Azul é considerada a mais bonita de todas! A cor azul turquesa da água tira o fôlego dos turistas. São duas horas de viagem de jipe – transporte comum por lá, para chegar até a lagoa. Uma boa pedida é fazer o passeio a tarde, para contemplar o pôr do sol, no meio do deserto brasileiro. A Lagoa Bonita, que faz jus ao nome, fica na mesma direção da Lagoa Azul, porém para chegar até lá é preciso escalar um monte de areia de 40 metros – há cordas para auxiliar na subida. Apesar de parecer desafiador e cansativo, o passeio vale a pena! A paisagem do topo da duna é deslumbrante! Além disso, agende uma viagem de barco para as praias Ponta do Mangue, Moitas, Vassouras, Morro do Boi e Barra do Tatu. Em muitas delas, é possível encontrar animais livres, como macacos-prego, que interagem com os visitantes. A praia de Caburé é recomendada especialmente para os mais aventureiros, já que o local não possui energia elétrica e é movido a geradores que funcionam somente durante o dia. lancha de Barreirinhas a Caburé leva em torno de uma hora e meia. O Farol Preguiças, mais conhecido como Farol do Mandacaru, foi erguido em 1940, no povoado de Mandacaru. O ponto turístico fica a uma hora de viagem pelo rio Preguiças. São 160 degraus que levam ao topo da torre, a 35 metros de altura. Lá em cima, a vista panorâmica do rio, o mar e os Lençóis são de tirar o fôlego. O passeio pelo Rio Preguiças é feito em um pequeno barco de alumínio - chamado “voadeira”, que leva os turistas até a área de proteção ambiental dos pequenos Lençóis, passando por Vassouras, seguindo Mandacaru e, finalmente, na península que separa o rio Caburé, onde o rio Preguiças se encontra com o Oceano Atlântico. ençóis Maranhenses National Park was built in 1981, in a space totalling 155,000 hectares, on the edge of the Preguiças River, in the north eastern region of the state of Maranhão; around 260 km from the capital, São Luís. You can get there by land, on BR 135; or by sea, through the canal in the Preguiças river, in Atins; or by water way, at Barreirinhas, which also runs through the Preguiças river. With dunes that reach 40 meters in height and fresh water lagoons, it has already been the backdrop for the film Casa de Areia (House of Sand), starring Fernanda Montenegro and Fernanda Torres. This Brazilian film, directed by Andrucha Waddington, won three awards: Sundance Film Festival, Satellite Award and the Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil. Also, it was selected by many festivals and one was the Toronto International Film Festival, in 2005. The best times to visit the Lençóis are between the months of May and October, when the lagoons in the park are full of water. During the dry season, November to January, the lagoons begin their draining process and the water levels decrease. During the period of rain, February to April, water levels return to normal.

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park offers many types of tours, either through the lagoons or beaches in the region. The ideal thing to do is to visit one each day. The Lagoa Azul is considered the most beautiful of them all! The turquoise blue water is breathtaking. It is a two hour drive by jeep – the most common form of transport, to get to the lagoon. Try to do this tour in the afternoon, to see the sun set in the middle of the Brazilian desert. The Lagoa Bonita, which does justice to the name, is in the same direction as the Lagoa Azul, but in order to get there you need to climb a 40 meter sand dune– there are ropes to help you up. Even though this may be challenging and tiring, this tour is worth the effort! The view from the top of the dune is amazing! Also, schedule a boat trip to the beaches of Ponta do Mangue, Moitas, Vassouras, Morro do Boi, and Barra do Tatu. On many of them you may find animals in the wild, such as the capuchin monkeys, who interact with the visitors. Caburé beach is recommended for the adventurous types, as this location does not have electrical energy and everything runs on generators that work only during the day. When night falls, gas lanterns are lit and visitors can

The undisputed beauty of its dunes is breathtaking and mesmerizing for the tourists who visit this paradise in the middle of the desert watch the stars in the sky. The trip by speedboat from Barreirinhas to Caburé takes around 1 ½ hours. The Preguiças Lighthouse, more commonly known as the Mandacaru Lighthouse, was erected in 1940, in the town of Mandacaru. This tourist spot is a one hour trip through the Preguiças River. There are 160 steps to the top of the tower; 35 meters high. At the top, you will have a panoramic view of the river, the ocean and the Lençóis - it will leave you speechless. The tour through Rio Preguiças is done in a small aluminum boat – called the “voadeira”, which takes tourists to an environmentally protected area in the small Lençóis, passing by Vassouras, followed by Mandacaru and, finally, in the peninsula that separates the Caburé river, where the Preguiças river meets the Atlantic ocean. Lastly, enjoy the typical maranhense cuisine! The most famous dish is the cuxá rice, made with vinagreira – a common vegetable in the state – sesame seeds, dried shrimp and hot peppers. Ask for this dish with fried fishand your trip will be even more unforgettable!

what is a QR code?

QR codes, or quick response codes, is a type of 2D bar code that may be decoded using your smartphone with a QR code reader. From being a tracking mechanism for auto parts, QR codes have proven to be very useful in marketing and convenience related applications that is more suitable for smartphone users. In the recent months, we have seen QR codes show up on marketing materials such as movie posters, promotional posters for various products, billboards, flyers, among other things. These have also been seen on newspaper ads, business cards, artwork, and other everyday things. There are two main things that you have to have when you deal with QR codes: 1. A mobile phone with a camera and Internet connectivity 2. A QR code reader

Where do I get a QR code reader? Most smartphones coming out nowadays have a QR code reader already installed. For some, you would need to download the reader and install it yourself. Note that you would have to check on the compatibility of these readers with your phones as some readers work only on iPhones or Android phones. There are readers that work on the Symbian OS found on Nokia phones and Java found on lower end smart phones.

How do you scan the QR code? After you have your reader installed, fire up the application and snap a picture of the QR code. Make sure that your hand is steady and that you are able to include the whole code into the picture. There will be some instances when the scan would fail, do not worry, just keep on snapping.

Resolving the link

Depending on your software, it may take some five to thirty seconds for the application to resolve the link for you. That is to say, to decode the information written behind the

code. If it is a URL, the QR code reader will open your browser and let you surf the mobile site the code links to. If it is a VCF card, a file that contains a person’s contact information, it will offer to save the information into your address book.

How do I get my own QR code?

There are many free QR code generators available, and some have different features than others. Here are the basic steps: 1. Type “QR code generator” into a search engine, such as Google or Bing. 2. Select a free generator 3. Select the feature you want and type in the information you want to embed in the code 4. Generate the code 5. Copy the image and paste it into a document 6. Print it out and scan it with a Smartphone!

Nominated many times for the most important music awards in the world, the GRAMMY Awards, and with over 20 albums and awards in her fantastic career, Eliane Elias mixes elements from Bossa Nova, jazz, classical music and pop, creating music that exceeds a style definition and pleases the most demanding listeners. A pianist, singer and composer, Elias began her career at a young age, at just 17 years old, playing with the icons of Bossa Nova, Vinícius de Moraes, Tom Jobim and Toquinho.

his Brazilian who has lived in New York since 1981, was one of the attractions at the Toronto Jazz Festival this summer and she recently released a new album, “Light My Fire”, with a special performances by Gilberto Gil, the acclaimed American trumpeter Randy Brecker and his daughter, Amanda Brecker, also a singer and composer who sings with Elias and Gil. Wave interviewed the talented singer and confirmed why she has been called by Jazziz magazine, “A citizen of the world” and “an artist beyond category”. WAVE - You began your career as a child, as a classic pianist. Where did you get this love of music from? ELIAS - I began my career when I was young. My mother was a classical pianist, she had a collection of jazz albums so, since I was 10 years old, I was already in love with jazz, to the point where I made transcripts of great pianists and developed a jazz language. At the age of 13 I studied at Zimbo Trio, one of the best music schools in Brazil and, at 15 I began teaching at this school. I gave piano lessons, improvisation and taught other instruments. WAVE - From 17 to 20 years of age you worked with the marvellous poet and composer Vinícius de Moraes, with Toquinho and Antônio Carlos Jobim, how did this influence your career? ELIAS - I began working with Vinícius de Moraes and Toquinho when I was 17 and I had the opportunity to be with them when they were in their creation phase. I then met Tom Jobim and it was fantastic, because I was exposed to, “bebendo na fonte”/ “the source”, which became the expression to say that I was there, with the originals, the ones who created this musical language, the Bossa Nova. I was with to them, I lived this music in a different way then people my age did. WAVE - What is Bossa Nova to Eliane Elias? ELIAS - Bossa Nova is something that is very strong inside me. I grew up studying Bossa Nova, I had the opportunity to work with its creators and to continue this musical language. It is part of my DNA, part of who I am. WAVE - You have lived in New York since 1981, what made you leave Brazil? ELIAS - Since I was small I always said I wanted to go to New York. I was already in love with jazz. The albums I had said they were recorded in NY, so I thought that that was the place to be. So I prepared myself musically and only went when I thought the time was right, that I was ready for an international career and to be received on the jazz circuit, which has always been predominantly American, black and masculine. It was 1981.

WAVE - How did you begin your international career? ELIAS - I first began with Vinícius and Toquinho, when we travelled through South America, doing shows. My solo career began when I went to New York and began to work with a group called Steps Ahead, with great names in the jazz industry and soon after I was hired by Blue Note recording, a record company that has been a big jazz label. I stayed there for many years and released 15 albums. WAVE - You have a singular sound, which combines many musical aspects, making your music pleasing to the most distinct tastes. Which style is closest to your heart? ELIAS - It’s hard to say. What I love is good music. I love harmony, rhythm - I love jazz, I like the improvisational aspects of jazz, of creativity and liberty. Brazilian music is unique in terms of rhythms, melodies; it is a romantic and sexy music. All these musical sides touch me, they are the ones I grew together with, and their aspects touch my heart. WAVE - Tell us a little bit about your new album, “Light My Fire”. ELIAS - “Light my Fire” is a very special album. It was my intention to take aspects that go beyond Bossa Nova; other rhythms, other elements of our music. On the album there are three duets with Gilberto Gil, my compositions and also iconic songs, such as Stevie Wonder’s romantic song, My Cherie Amour and the jazz classic by saxophonist Paul Desmond, Take Five, internationally done with a cool aspect, with sensuality, and elements from Bossa Nova and Brazilian rhythms. I was very pleased with the result. WAVE - How does it feel to sing with your daughter? ELIAS - The feeling is marvellous. Besides, being with her is marvellous. She is a great artist, has a lot of talent and a beautiful voice. I was very pleased that she participated in the CD and especially happy for the fact that she is making her musical career, following a path totally different than my own. She is a composer, sings beautifully and is on her third album, touring in Asia and Brazil. WAVE - Wave is a bilingual magazine, geared towards the Brazilian community that lives in Canada. The Psychologist’s Ethical Code

Do you truly trust your psychologist or do you omit certain aspects of your personality for fear of being judged?

According to the Federal Psychology Council (RESOLUTION CFP Nº 010/05), the psychologist’s professional ethical code stipulates: Art. 9 –“ It is the duty of the psychologist to respect professional secrecy in order to protect, via confidentiality, the privacy of individuals, groups or organisations, that they come in contact with when exercising their profession.

n Quebec or in any Canadian province, the ethical codes for professionals in psychology equivalently include the terms of confidentiality and secrecy. within the professional practice of psychology, many are not familiar with the meaning of this article and the repercussions regarding the psychologist-client relationship. Through the examples below, I would like to explain how we maintain the confidentiality of our patients. The psychologist may not comment with third parties (including family and friends) about patients. If by chance the psychologist meets the patient in a public place, he should refrain from greeting the patient. However, it is the opposite for the patient: The patient may greet, and speak to the psychologist, if the patient so wishes. Many times it is the patient himself who comments to third parties that he is in psychotherapy with psychologist “John”, for example. The patient may speak about his treatment to whomever he wishes. But the psychologist cannot! And a psychologist also cannot speak to anyone without written consent from the patient. Example: Imagine that the husband of a patient calls the wife’s psychologist and says that he would like to talk about some things that are going on, but that he thinks that his wife had not broached the subject with the psychologist. The correct thing for the psychologist to do is to explain that he cannot speak to him about his patient, unless the patient authorizes him to do so. Canadians give much importance to confidentiality and secrecy rights in psychological treatments. In Quebec for example, this right is applicable to all individuals over the age of 14. One widely used way of including the parents of adolescents over the age of 14 in therapy, is to invite them to one or two joint sessions with their children. But the adolescent must agree with this in order for it to happen. I would like to point out that professional secrecy does not include cases where the patient intends to make an attempt on their own life or the lives of others, or is involved in a crime (robbery, abuse of minors etc...). No entanto, dentro da prática profissional do psicólogo, muitos desconhecem o significado deste artigo e a sua repercussão na relação entre psicólogo e cliente. Quero explicar então, como preservamos o sigilo no tratamento psicológico com alguns exemplos: Ao psicólogo é vetado comentar com terceiros (incluindo família ou amigos) quem são seus clientes. Se por um acaso, o psicólogo encontrar um (a) cliente seu em lugar público, este deve abster-se de cumprimentálo. No entanto, o contrário é permitido ao cliente: Este (a) pode ir saudar conversar com o seu psicólogo, se assim o desejar. Muitas vezes, é o próprio cliente que comenta com terceiros que está fazendo psicoterapia com o psicólogo “Fulano de Tal”, por exemplo. O cliente pode falar de seu tratamento a quem quiser. O seu psicólogo não! E nem mesmo comunicar-se com aqueles sem o consentimento por escrito de seu cliente. Exemplo: Imaginemos que o marido de uma cliente telefona ao psicólogo da esposa e diz que gostaria de conversar sobre algumas coisas que estão se passando, mas que ele acha que provavelmente, sua esposa, não havia comentado nada a respeito. O correto é o psicólogo explicar que não poderá conversar com ele sobre sua cliente, a menos que esta lhe dê uma autorização. O canadense dá uma importância muito grande ao direito de sigilo ou de confidencialidade no tratamento psicológico. Em Québec, por exemplo, este direito se aplica a todos os indivíduos maiores de14 anos. Uma maneira que é bastante utilizada para incluir os pais dos adolescentes maiores de 14 na terapia é convidá-los para uma ou duas sessões conjuntas com seus filhos (a). Mas o adolescente deve estar de acordo. The plan covers consular services and assistance, policies for ex-pat communities, education, social security, work, health, social assistance and human rights, culture and communication, economic themes, and science and technology. The Consul-General of Brazil in Toronto, and Ambassador Afonso Cardoso spoke to Wave: “Because Brazil is a country of emigration, there is an increasing need to modernize consular services. The concern with citizenship and putting it into practice led to the creation of the Citizen’s Council. The Consulates are instrumental in this and the one in Toronto has already held three meetings since we arrived a year ago. Next will be the Brazilians Abroad Conference. This year, in October, we celebrate the fourth one with the participation of people from practically all the Brazilian communities abroad. The Citizen’s Council can be represented by any one of us at the Conference and we can propose and debate any topics of interest for the community that we belong to.”

Once cooked, add broth, sugar and then strain. Add wine. Reduce wine to half the amount and add flour, soaked and well-chopped mushrooms and place browned meat once again in pot. Add nuts, season and finish cooking over low fire. Cut meat in thin slices and serve on dish surrounded by potatoes and carrots and pour sauce over meat. Serves 8.

Quando dourada, retire da panela e, no mesmo óleo, doure a cebola, os pimentões e os tomates. Quando cozidos, junte o caldo de carne e o açúcar e depois coe. Adicione o vinho. Reduza o vinho à metade e junte a farinha, os cogumelos picados e reidratados e coloque a carne novamente na panela. Junte as nozes e continue cozinhando até a carne ficar macia. Corte a carne em rodelas finas e sirva numa travessa junto com batatas e cenouras cozidas. Derrame o molho sobre a carne. Esta receita rende . 8 porções
